Used data from a questionnaire to compare the need fulfillment and dissatisfaction perceived by 675 commissioned officers at 3 levels of military grade who were serving in command, and 5 different types of staff assignments. Findings show that commanders at all grades were more fulfilled and less dissatisfied than officers in most types of staff assignment. However, the tendency for mean dissatisfaction to decrease with higher organizational rank noted in earlier studies was not found in all staff groups. Used data from a 1977 survey to investigate the relationship of salary to professional activities and to vocational satisfactions of 642 medical school psychologists. Results show the following: (1) current and potential salaries correlated with items involving seniority and rank, and with beliefs of appropriate skill utilization and advantages accruing in the setting. (2) Salaries are negatively related to time spent in diagnostic and therapeutic work. (3) Only salary expectations are significantly related to personal satisfactions and comparative occupational freedoms. This study examined the job satisfactions of 143 rehabilitation counselors from 6 state agencies. A Job Satisfaction Inventory (JSI) incorporating satisfactions with 8 dimensions was used to investigate counselor job satisfactions and their relationships with immediate-intermediate performance criteria. The job satisfaction of male and female counselors was found to be essentially similar although the effects of satisfaction with performance criteria was felt to be different—dependent to some extent on the sex of the counselor. For women counselors, greater job satisfaction with pay and security appeared related to bigger case loads, more "12" closures and fewer "13" closures. In the case of men, there were relatively few instances of significant relationships and these might have occurred by chance. (16 ref.) Related 5 bases of supervisory power (coercive, expert, legitimate, referent, and reward), proposed by J. R. French and B. Raven, to 5 areas of subordinate satisfaction: (a) company, (b) job, (c) supervision, (d) climate for growth in performance reviews, and (e) climate for growth in day-to-day interactions with supervisor. Ss were 323 employees of a large public utility company who answered a questionnaire survey. Expert power was the most common, followed by legitimate, coercive, referent, and reward. Generally, referent and expert powers were associated with greatest satisfaction; legitimate power was intermediate; reward and coercive powers were associated with least satisfaction. The 2 clear-cut reversals were meaningful when the unique aspects of satisfaction were considered. Also, the most (and least) effective bases of power were perceived as being used together. Comparison with other published research reveals few population differences in prevalence of various types of power. Administered an 18-item adaptation of L. Porter's (see PA, Vol. 36:2LI01P) needs satisfaction questionnaire during individual interviews with 228 workers in 5 geographically isolated mining camps in the Canadian sub-Arctic, where turnover is high and apparent satisfaction low. Response analysis indicates that (a) a consistent hierarchy of need importance existed across camps; (b) fulfillment and dissatisfaction of lower needs varied with actual camp conditions; (c) high social fulfillment and low dissatisfaction were universal; (d) different autonomy perceptions might discriminate between managers and rank-and-file workers; and (e) low fulfillment and high dissatisfaction in the higher order needs of esteem and self-actualization formed consistent patterns in each camp, contributing to high turnover in northern mines. Compared the perceptions of need satisfactions of (1) American managers currently working in overseas locations as a function of their position in the organizational hierarchy, and (2) the overseas American managers and their domestic counterparts. A need satisfaction questionnaire (see L. W. Porter, 36:2), previously employed in numerous studies to test the Maslow need-hierarchy concept, was used to collect the data from 127 overseas Americans. The domestic manager data used for comparisons were collected in a study by L. W. Porter (see 38:4). Findings indicate that no matter how Ss were classified, job level or domestic and overseas, the autonomy and self-actualization need categories are the least fulfilled. Compares the need satisfactions of managers in field work with those of similar managers in central office work with a government agency. There was greater satisfaction among those in field work especially with respect to certain higher-level needs. Also, a comparison was made of the need satisfactions of all respondents in the government agency with those of a similar group from private industry. The satisfaction of the government managers was less across all need items than the satisfaction of the private industry managers. A perceptual halo effect created by the insecure conditions existing in the government agency at the time the study was conducted may explain this finding. Contends that although US psychology at present occupies a major position in world psychology, the field is growing more rapidly in many other countries. How do management perceptions of need satisfaction and importance vary by level of management? 139 supervisors and middle management individuals in 3 companies were sent a questionnaire constructed to measure needs in a hierarchy compared to one described by Maslow. Middle managers fulfilled, more often than did bottom managers, needs for esteem, security, and autonomy. Community psychology has become an increasingly active speciality with promise of providing a relevant link to current social issues. It's province and dimensions are not yet clear, however. A traditional antipathy toward field and community studies has fostered prejudice and misinformation about the nature of inquiry. The logic of research suggests a need for naturalistic studies, with an ecological orientation as an effective framework. The community is seen as a productive domain for the study of psychology. Counseling psychology can make a contribution to the newly emerging fields of health-related behavioral science, but the nature of that contribution will depend on counseling psychology's willingness to develop new perspectives and practices. The present authors compare 2 of these health orientations, behavioral medicine and health psychology, in an effort to establish counseling psychology's relationship with either of these approaches. Three areas of training and application are surveyed, which the current research suggests will offer opportunities for meaningful participation by counseling psychologists. Such opportunities for important work in these health-related areas will call on counseling psychology's traditional psychoeducational strategies and creative new methodologies and perspectives. Historically, sport psychology has been identified with physical education; however, recent developments in the field toward applied issues have substantially expanded psychologists' interests and opportunities. Unfortunately, little is known about professional psychologists' involvement in sport psychology practice, research, and training. Therefore, a national survey of 500 male and 500 female psychologists (American Psychological Association Division 12 members) was conducted. Based on 489 responses, results indicated that psychologists (a) were uninvolved in sport psychology research and teaching and (b) had received minimal training or supervision in the field. Despite this absence of sport science training, many had consulted with (22%) or provided individual therapy to (48%) athletes or sport teams. A 1972 follow-up of the L. M. Terman study of gifted men, when the Ss' average age was 62, permitted measurement of 4 target variables for which antecedents could be sought: life-cycle satisfaction with occupation, satisfaction with family life, degree of work persistence into their 60's, and unbroken marriage vs a history of divorce. The recorded events and expressions of feelings obtained at decade intervals since 1922 were searched for predictors. Both occupational satisfaction and work persistence were best predicted by feelings of satisfaction, ambition, and good health expressed as early as age 30. Family-life satisfaction and success in marriage were predicted by good childhood social adjustment, good mental health in later years, retrospective (age 40) positive attitudes toward parents, and best of all, by the Terman Marital Happiness Test (taken at age 30).
