The only analytical method so far proposed for establishing determinacy in a model for parallel computation is due to Karp and Miller. It involves growing a tree of every machine state, which is typically very large and needs much computation. The letter describes a very much simpler method suitable for nonpipelined hardware.

Effect of settlement on dense slurry flow in a horizontal channel

A shear viscosity model for the underfill flow is proposed based on slug flow, which is appropriate in the case of neutrally buoyant particles. However, the filling particles used in practice are often heavier than the liquid carriers. The effect of non-neutrally buoyant particles is investigated in this work. The flow of dense slurry in which the filling particles are heavier than the liquid carrier is analyzed by considering the particle-particle and particle-wall interactions, which are derived from fluid film lubrication theory. The effect of settlement causes the flow behavior to depart from that of slug flow. Nevertheless, steady flow is still found possible, and, for a few representative packing patterns considered, somewhat modified flow patterns exist.

The role of failure analysis in establishing design rules for reliable plastic products

Plastic products can fail in a large variety of modes because of errors in the design, processing and application. The designer must take into account these errors in order to prevent these errors rather than notice them.Without having knowledge of the complex mechanical behaviour of plastics and the structure related properties, adequate design of reliable products is impossible. The designer must also be aware of the specific failure modes, failure causes and failure mechanisms and he can achieve this by failure analysis. Important information from analyses of failed products is the handling of users in ways not foreseen by him. A classification of failed plastic products based on failure causes and failure mechanisms is presented and should be used in carrying out Failure Modes and Effects Analysis.
