Stelmach, Herdman, and McNeil (1994) suggested recently that the perceived duration for attended stimuli is shorter than that for unattended ones. In contrast, the attenuation hypothesis (Thomas & Weaver, 1975) suggests the reverse relation between directed attention and perceived duration. We conducted six experiments to test the validity of the two contradictory hypotheses. In all the experiments, attention was directed to one of two possible stimulus sources. Experiments 1 and 2 employed stimulus durations from 70 to 270 msec. A stimulus appeared in either the visual or the auditory modality. Stimuli in the attended modality were rated as longer than stimuli in the unattended modality. Experiment 3 replicated this finding using a different psychophysical procedure. Experiments 4-6 showed that the finding applies not only to stimuli from different sensory modalities but also to stimuli appearing at different locations within the visual field. The results of all six experiments support the assumption that directed attention prolongs the perceived duration of a stimulus.  相似文献

The effect of directing attention to a particular location in space has been widely examined in the study of human information processing. Current models assume that attention modulates the speed of information flow such that attended signals are transmitted more rapidly through the perceptual system than unattended signals. This assumption that attention modulates the speed of information flow was examined in the present research by having observers judge the temporal order of two visual stimuli while directing their attention towards one of the stimuli or away from both stimuli. In one experiment, attended stimuli were perceived with a shorter latency than unattended stimuli, supporting the assumption that attention influences the speed of information transmission in the visual system. The results of another experiment indicate that attention alters the temporal profile of the visual responses, such that visual responses at the attended location are more sharply tuned than responses at the unattended location. It is concluded that attention has two effects on visual responses: It affects the transmission speed of information in the visual system and it alters the temporal profile of the responses. Many studies have found that stimuli can be discriminated more accurately at attended locations than at unattended locations, and such results have typically been taken as evidence for the hypothesis that attention operates by allocating limited perceptual processing resources to attended locations. An alternative proposal, however, is that attention acts to reduce uncertainty about target location, thereby increasing accuracy by decreasing the number of noise sources. To distinguish between these alternatives, we conducted 6 spatial cuing experiments in which target location uncertainty was eliminated. Despite the absence of uncertainty, target discriminations were more accurate at the attended location, consistent with resource allocation models. These cue validity effects were observed under a broad range of conditions, including central and peripheral cuing, but were absent at very short cue–target delay intervals. In this study, we recorded the event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited by stimuli appearing at attended and unattended locations. The voltage amplitudes and latencies of the P1, N1, P2, N2 and P3 visual components showed statistically significant differences in the attended condition with respect to the unattended one. The power spectral density of the EEG following stimulus onset was calculated. The difference between the spectral densities of the attended and unattended conditions was computed. Statistically significant differences were found in the decrease of alpha (9-11 Hz) and the increase of beta (15-17 Hz) frequencies during the attention condition with respect to the unattended condition. These results suggest that the arrival of a visual stimulus during the attended condition generates a complex reorganization of neuronal activity in both time and frequency domains.  相似文献

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from healthy subjects in response to unilaterally flashed high and low luminance bar stimuli presented randomly to left and right field locations. Their task was to covertly and selectively attend to either the left or right stimulus locations (separate blocks) in order to detect infrequent shorter target bars of either luminance. Independent of attention, higher stimulus luminance resulted in higher ERP amplitudes for the posterior N95 (80-110 ms), occipital P1 (110-140 ms), and parietal N1 (130-180 ms). Brighter stimuli also resulted in shorter peak latency for the occipital N1 component (135-220 ms); this effect was not observed for the N1 components over parietal, central or frontal regions. Significant attention-related amplitude modulations were obtained for the occipital P1, occipital, parietal and central N1, the occipital and parietal P2, and the parietal N2 components; these components were larger to stimuli at the attended location. In contrast to the relatively short latencies of both spatial attention and luminance effects, the first interaction between luminance and spatial attention effects was observed for the P3 component to the target stimuli (350-750 ms). This suggests that interactions of spatial attention and stimulus luminance previously reported for reaction time measures may not reflect the earliest stages of sensory/perceptual processing. Differences in the way in which luminance and attention affected the occipital P1, occipital N1 and parietal N1 components suggest dissociations among these ERPs in the mechanisms of visual and attentional processing they reflect.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A partial report procedure was used to test the ability of observers to split attention over noncontiguous locations. Observers reported the identity of 2 targets that appeared within a 5?×?5 stimulus array, and cues (validity?=?80%) informed them of the 2 most likely target locations. On invalid trials, 1 of the targets appeared directly in between the cued locations. Experiments 1, 1 a, and 2 showed a strong accuracy advantage at cued locations compared with intervening ones. This effect was larger when the cues were arranged horizontally rather than vertically. Experiment 3 suggests that this effect of cue orientation reflects an advantage for processing targets that appear in different hemifields. Experiments 4 and 4a suggest that the primary mechanism supporting the flexible deployment of spatial attention is the suppression of interference from stimuli at unattended locations. We developed and tested a powerful method for identifying and characterizing the effect of attention on performance in visual tasks as due to signal enhancement, distractor exclusion, or internal noise suppression. Based on a noisy Perceptual Template Model (PTM) of a human observer, the method adds increasing amounts of external noise (white gaussian random noise) to the visual stimulus and observes the effect on performance of a perceptual task for attended and unattended stimuli. The three mechanisms of attention yield three "signature" patterns of performance. The general framework for characterizing the mechanisms of attention is used here to investigate the attentional mechanisms in a concurrent location-cued orientation discrimination task. Test stimuli--Gabor patches tilted slightly to the right or left--always appeared on both the left and the right of fixation, and varied independently. Observers were cued on each trial to attend to the left, the right, or evenly to both stimuli, and decide the direction of tilt of both test stimuli. For eight levels of added external noise and three attention conditions (attended, unattended, and equal), subjects' contrast threshold levels were determined. At low levels of external noise, attention affected threshold contrast: threshold contrasts for non-attended stimuli were systematically higher than for equal attention stimuli, which were, in turn, higher than for attended stimuli. Specifically, when the rms contrast of the external noise is below 10%, there is a consistent 17% elevation of contrast threshold from attended to unattended condition across all three subjects. For higher levels of external noise, attention conditions did not affect threshold contrast values at all. These strong results are characteristic of a signal enhancement, or equivalently, an internal additive noise reduction mechanism of attention.  相似文献

Saccadic reaction time (RT) is reduced when a fixation stimulus is extinguished 200 msec before a target appears. An attentional predisengagement theory (APT) may explain this gap effect: When covert attention is engaged (e.g., on fixation), the saccadic system is inhibited and RT is delayed; when the attended stimulus is extinguished, attention is disengaged, the inhibition is removed, and RT is facilitated. In 3 experiments covert attention was endogenously or exogenously cued to an object on the vertical meridian. Onset of a saccadic target on the horizontal meridian could be preceded by the offset of an attended or unattended object. Contrary to APT, RTs were identical after attended and unattended offsets. Results suggest that the gap effect has 2 components, and covert visual attention plays no role. One component is motor system preparation; the other is a fixation offset effect specific to the oculomotor system. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Auditory event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded during auditory and visual selective attention tasks. Auditory stimuli consisted of frequent standard tones (1000 Hz) and infrequent deviant tones (1050 Hz and 1300 Hz) delivered randomly to the left and right ears. Visual stimuli were vertical line gratings randomly presented on a video monitor at mean intervals of 6 s. During auditory attention, the subject attended to the stimuli in a designated ear and responded to the 1300-Hz deviants occurring among the attended tones. During visual attention, the subject responded to the occasional visual stimuli. ERPs for tones delivered to the attended ear were negatively displaced relative to ERPs elicited by tones delivered to the unattended ear and to ERPs elicited by auditory stimuli during visual attention. This attention effect consisted of negative difference waves with early and late components. Mismatch negativities (MMNs) were elicited by 1300-Hz and 1050-Hz deviants irrespective of whether they occurred among attended or unattended tones. MMN amplitudes were unaffected by attention, supporting the proposal that the MMN is generated by an automatic cerebral discrimination process.  相似文献

Five experiments demonstrated that a briefly presented vertical line is judged as longer when it is unattended relative to when it is attended. This effect was obtained in estimating the length of 1 of 5 possible lines (Experiment 1) and in matching the length of a test line to a criterion line (Experiments 3 and 4). The directional effect of attention was eliminated when participants estimated the length difference between 2 simultaneously presented lines (Experiment 2). An additional matching experiment (Experiment 5) demonstrated similar lengthening effects for unattended lines and for unattended distances separated by vertically displaced dots. It is proposed that the metric for unattended stimuli is composed of large attentional receptive fields and that the final output is mediated by rounding up processes, so that the unattended line is systematically perceived as longer than the attended one. In two experiments, large letters H or Z composed of small letters (also H or Z) were presented. Subjects had to make a two-choice motor response (e.g. H--left key, Z--right key). A cue presented 500 ms before the letter indicated which level (global or local) was relevant. In Experiment I, a third letter (T) sometimes appeared either at the cued or the non-cued level; in the former case, subjects had to shift their attention and to respond to stimulus features located at the non-cued level. The interference effect (RT delay in response to incongruent stimuli as compared to congruent ones) was larger when the local, rather than global, level was cued. A slow anterior negativity preceding globally-cued stimuli and shorter N1 and P2 ERP component latencies to these stimuli indicated better preparation for processing of global, as compared to local, stimulus features. The shift from local to global focus yielded a larger increase of RT, error rate, and of the P600 latency than the global-to-local shift. The P600 latency changes were parallel to those of RT. In Experiment II, the attentional shift was provoked by stimulus color red-colored letters meant that the cue was invalid, and thus, subjects had to respond to the non-cued level. Neither the interference nor the attentional shift demonstrated any asymmetry between the global and local levels. ERPs also did not differ substantially after local and global cues. In the condition demanding a shift of focus (invalid cue, incongruent letter), a positive deflection of the lateralized readiness potential indicated the activation of the wrong response channel. The large RT increment in this condition was not accompanied by an increase of the P600 latency. Two possible mechanisms of attentional shift may be proposed, the first related to perceptual processes (e.g. an additional visual search), and the second, to the competition between two response intentions.  相似文献

Event-related potential (ERP) effects of transient and sustained non-spatial visual attention were investigated in an experiment where subjects were instructed to attend to the color or form of visual stimuli in order to detect infrequently presented targets with the relevant feature. The to-be-attended feature was either varied in a trial-by-trial fashion (transient attention) or was kept constant for an entire experimental block (sustained attention). Both transient and sustained attention resulted in a larger negativity for attended as compared to unattended stimuli between 200 and 300 ms post-stimulus. This effect was more pronounced for sustained attention than for transient attention and larger for attention to color than for attention directed to stimulus form. In the sustained, but not in the transient attention condition, color attention resulted in larger positivities for attended stimuli between 150 and 200 ms and in the P3 time range. These effects are interpreted as evidence for the existence of non-spatial attentional selection processes that are more effective under sustained than under transient attention conditions and are different from processes of visual-spatial attention. Moreover, the results indicate a special status for sustained attention to stimulus color.  相似文献

According to D. E. Broadbent's (1958) selective filter theory, people do not process unattended stimuli beyond the analysis of basic physical properties. This theory was later rejected on the basis of numerous findings that people identify irrelevant (and supposedly unattended) stimuli. A careful review of this evidence, however, reveals strong reasons to doubt that these irrelevant stimuli were in fact unattended. This review exposed a clear need for new experiments with tight control over the locus of attention. The authors present 5 such experiments using a priming paradigm. When steps were taken to ensure that irrelevant stimuli were not attended, these stimuli produced no priming effects. Hence, the authors found no evidence that unattended stimuli can be identified. The results support a modern version of Broadbent's selective theory, updated to reflect recent research advances. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Ss made speeded responses to peripheral luminance increments or decrements preceded by informative central precues. In 4 experiments with 48 university students, one of these stimuli was much more likely to occur than the other. In a simple detection task, the likely and unlikely stimuli showed equivalent cuing effects. In a discrimination task (bright/dim), the likely stimuli showed cuing but the unlikely one did not (spotlight failure), and there was a tendency to make the likely response when the unlikely stimulus occurred at the cued location. In Exp 5, the 2 stimuli were equally likely, and a choice was required. Large cuing effects were observed for both stimuli with no evidence of a speed–accuracy trade-off. A logogen-activation framework is described within which criterion and sensitivity adjustments are needed to accommodate the full pattern of results. Endogenous orienting appears to enhance processing of all stimuli at attended (relative to unattended) locations, an effect that may be masked by specific stimulus or response expectancies. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded to trains of rapidly presented auditory and visual stimuli. ERPs in conditions in which subjects attended to different features of visual stimuli were compared with ERPs to the same type of stimuli when subjects attended to different features of auditory stimuli. This design permitted us to study effects of variations in both intramodal and intermodal visual attention on the timing and topography of ERP components in the same experiment. There were no indications that exogenous N110, P140 and N180 components to line gratings of high and low spatial frequencies were modulated by either intra- or intermodal forms of attention. Furthermore, intramodal and intermodal attention effects on ERPs showed similar topographical distributions. These combined findings suggest that the same neural generators in extrastriate occipital areas are involved in both forms of attention. Visual ERPs elicited in the condition in which subjects were engaged in auditory selective attention showed a large positive displacement at the occipital scalp sites relative to ERPs to attended and unattended stimuli in the visual condition. The early onset of this positivity might be associated with a highly confident and early rejection of the irrelevant visual stimuli, when these stimuli are presented among auditory stimuli. In addition, the later onset of selection potentials in the intramodal condition suggests that a more precise stimulus selection is needed when features of visual stimuli are rejected among other features of the same stimulus pattern, than when visual stimuli are rejected among stimuli of another modality.  相似文献

To access the role of attention in visual processing, we have recorded single-unit activity from area V4 of visual cortex in macaque monkeys, and the results of these experiments provide a clear demonstration of the relationship between inter-stimulus competition and attention. Specifically, attended stimuli elicit larger responses than ignored stimuli, and these attention effects are increased when: a) the total number of distracting stimuli is increased; b) both attended and ignored stimuli are located inside the neuron's receptive field; and c) the attended and ignored stimuli are presented simultaneously rather than sequentially. We have also examined the role of inter-stimulus competition in human subjects by recording event-related potentials (ERPs), which are electrophysiological responses that can be recorded noninvasively from the scalp. In these experiments, we have found that the attention-sensitive N2pc wave is present when subjects focus attention onto target stimuli when they are surrounded by competing distractor stimuli, but is absent when the competition is eliminated (e.g. by removing the distractors). Changes between alternating visual displays are difficult to detect when the successive presentations of the displays are separated by a brief temporal interval. To assess whether unattended changes attract attention, observers searched for the location of a change involving either a large or a small number of features, in pairs of displays consisting of 4, 7, 10, 13, or 16 letters (Experiment 1) or digits (Experiments 2 and 3). Each display in a pair of displays was presented for 200 ms, and either a blank screen (Experiments 1 and 2) or a screen of equal luminance to the letters and digits (Experiment 3) was presented for 80 ms between the alternating displays. In all experiments, the search function for locating the larger change was shallower than the search function for locating the smaller change. These results indicate that unattended changes play a functional role in guiding focal attention. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Processing of unattended semantic information was examined in 13 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 23 normal controls (NC) using a selective attention, priming task. Two vertically aligned pictures of objects served as primes, and object names were targets. Participants were instructed to attend to only 1 picture, defined by color, in the prime display. NC participants showed facilitation only for target items that were the name of the attended prime picture, but AD patients showed facilitation from the attended and unattended prime pictures. Two accounts of these data posit a deficit in the initiation of the selection component of selective attentional processing in AD. On the basis of spotlight theories, a 3rd account posits a deficit in AD patients' ability to adjust the scope of the selection "beam." Last, facilitation of attended and unattended information may be due to crosstalk between accurately selected and unselected information. Implications of the activation of irrelevant information to language function in AD are also discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to determine whether attention-related changes in luminance detectability reflect a modulation of early sensory processing. Exps 1 and 2 used peripheral cues to direct attention and found substantial effects of cue validity on target detectability; these effects were consistent with a sensory-level locus of selection but not with certain memory- or decision-level mechanisms. In Exp 3, event-related brain potentials were recorded in a similar paradigm using central cues, and attention was found to produce changes in sensory-evoked brain activity beginning within the 1st 1 msec of stimulus processing. These changes included both an enhancement of sensory responses to attended stimuli and a suppression of sensory responses to unattended stimuli; the enhancement and suppression effects were isolated to different neural responses, indicating that they may arise from independent attentional mechanisms. Transient attention to a visually salient cue enhances processing of a subsequent target in the same spatial location between 50 to 150 ms after cue onset (K. Nakayama & M. Mackeben, 1989). Do stimuli from a categorically defined target set, such as letters or digits, also generate transient attention? Participants reported digit targets among keyboard symbols in a changing array of 8 items. When 1 target preceded a second target in the same location at a stimulus onset asynchrony of 107 ms (but not 213 ms), the second target was reported more often than in a condition in which there was no leading target. When the 2 targets were at different locations, report of the second target was impaired. With both letters and digits as targets, the enhancement effect was shown not to be due to category priming. Critically, the attentional benefit was present whether or not participants reported the leading target. Transient attention, contingent attentional capture, popout, and Lag 1 sparing in the attentional blink may involve a common mechanism for orienting processing resources towards salient and task relevant stimuli.
