Compared the presenting concerns of 3,050 counseling center clients (undergraduate and graduate students) as those concerns varied by ethnicity, gender, and previous counseling experience. Asian-American clients were much more likely to perceive themselves as having educational or vocational concerns, whereas White clients were disproportionately more likely to admit to personal or emotional concerns. The comparison among 7 different Asian-American groups revealed that Filipino-American and Asian-American/White mixed clients were more likely to endorse personal or emotional concerns than other Asian-American groups. Gender and previous counseling experience were found to be related to the presenting concern, but the effects were the same in each ethnic comparison. Results are interpreted with respect to (1) what counselors should be aware of in interacting with Asian-American clients and (2) how they differ both from White clients and among themselves. Used a 3?×?2?×?2 factorial design to study the effects of S acculturation (low, medium, or high), counselor ethnicity (Anglo-American or Mexican-American), and counseling style (directive or nondirective) on Mexican-American Ss' perceptions of and willingness to see a counselor. Within acculturation levels, Ss were randomly assigned to view stimulus materials (in which the counselor's ethnicity was varied) and to listen to tape recordings of a simulated counseling session (in which the counseling style was varied). No evidence was found of an acculturation effect for any dependent variable. However, Ss gave higher credibility ratings and were more willing to see a counselor who was Mexican American for personal, academic, and vocational concerns. Tested the hypothesis that previous ratings of programs in psychology reflect both an experimental psychology and general institutional halo bias. A questionnaire similar to one used in an earlier study of graduate programs by H. D. Roose and C. J. Andersen (1970) was used to survey the responses of 598 professionals in the field of counseling psychology. Respondents were furnished with a listing of 70 doctoral programs in counseling psychology and other closely related programs and were asked to rate each of the programs. It was found that applied programs in counseling psychology received ratings that differed from overall ratings of psychology in general. Programs ranked as strong, good, and adequate are listed. Ratings were related to institutional halo, program age, rater knowledge of program, geographic location, and approved status by the American Psychological Association. Implications for program evaluation are discussed, and users of reputational ratings are cautioned about the need for supplemental information. Examined associations among working alliance, session evaluations over the course of brief counseling, and counseling outcome. At a training clinic, 61 clients and student counselors from 41 dyads completed ratings of session depth, smoothness, positivity, and arousal after their 1st 12 sessions. Alliance ratings were completed after the 4th session and at termination. Clients and counselors also provided 5 measures of counseling outcome. Results indicated that session evaluations were significantly related to later alliance ratings, and positive alliance ratings predicted subsequent session evaluations. Both linear and curvilinear session effects were suggested. Associations for client ratings were generally stronger than for counselor ratings. Both alliance and session evaluations were significant unique predictors of client-related outcome, but only alliance predicted counselor-rated outcome. Asian Americans drop out of mental health treatment at a high rate. This problem could be addressed by enhancing therapists' multicultural competence and by examining clients' cultural attitudes that may affect the counseling process. In the present study, we used a video analogue design with a sample of 113 Asian American college students to examine these possibilities. The result from a t test showed that the session containing therapist multicultural competencies received higher ratings than the session without therapist multicultural competence. In addition, correlational analyses showed that participant values acculturation was positively associated with participant ratings of counseling process, while the value of emotional self-control was negatively correlated. The results of a hierarchical multiple regression analysis did not support any interaction effects among the independent variables on counseling process. All of these findings could contribute to the field of multicultural competence research and have implications for therapist practices and training. Examined differences in potential-client preference and believed effectiveness for counseling approaches based on behavioral, client-centered, and psychoanalytic theory using 57 college students. Analyses of S responses to randomly ordered same-client, same-problem demonstration tapes of each approach indicated that the behavioral approach was significantly more highly preferred and believed more effective than either the client-centered or psychoanalytic approach. No significant differences were found between ratings of client-centered and psychoanalytic approaches. While the preference for behavioral counseling merits further theoretical and empirical investigation, more importantly, preference and believed-effectiveness differences suggest that counseling outcomes should be investigated as a function of the acceptability to the client of actual counseling behaviors. The Client Behavior System was used to evaluate the therapeutic process with 27 sexually abused 7–17-yr-old girls enrolled in psychoeducationally based individual counseling. Based on ratings collected for the session in which the topic of sexual abuse was formally introduced, it was found that girls were more likely to provide abuse-related answers in response to questions pertaining to child sexual abuse, regardless of whether they were treated by a male or female counselor. These findings provide reason to reconsider previous recommendations that sexually abused girls are best treated by female counselors. Studied 3,053 Asian-American and non-Asian students in the 1966 freshman class of a large state university over a 4-yr period to determine usage of mental health services. Asian-Americans underutilized the campus psychiatric service but significantly overutilized the counseling center. Possible reasons related to the Asian-Americans' subcultural values explain these findings. Nearly 50% of Chinese-American females utilized mental health services of some kind. Reports an error in the original article by R. W. Thoreson et al (Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1975[Sep], Vol 22[5], 446-450). On page 448, an error appears in Table 1. George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tennessee, is incorrectly listed as George Peabody University. It should also have an asterisk to indicate that the program was an APA-approved program in counseling psychology at the time the data for the study were collected. Peabody continues to have an accredited program under a new category called "Programs in Combined Scientific-Professional Psychology," which is characterized by a combination of "clinical, counseling, and school psychology." 84 17–66 yr old homosexual men identified as holding either an activist or a nonactivist stance on gay advocacy rated the counselor's credibility and attractiveness on the Counselor Rating Form after listening to an audiotape-recorded segment of a counseling interview between a male counselor and a male client expressing sexual preference concerns. Ss heard the same counseling interaction except for counselor responses to 2 client questions, one related to counselor sexual preference and one related to counselor stance on gay advocacy. The counselor was rated more Expert, Trustworthy, and Attractive when he stated a sexual preference for men than when he stated a sexual preference for women or refrained from stating a sexual preference. Attractiveness ratings were a function of attitude similarity between the counselor portrayed on the tape recording and Ss in the study. Using transcribed intake sessions of 52 counselor–client dyads, this study explored the relative contributions of (a) counselor and client race or ethnicity, (b) counselor–client racial or ethnic match, (c) previous academic training in multicultural counseling, and (d) self-reported multicultural counseling competence to observer ratings of trainees' multicultural counseling competence. Results revealed that (a) Black American and Latino American counselor trainees were rated as more multiculturally competent than their White American peers, and (b) prior multicultural training was positively predictive of observer-rated multicultural counseling competence. Used microcounseling procedures to assess differences between intended counseling behavior and actual practice among 43 graduate students in counselor education. A paradigm developed by D. H. Frey was used to divide counseling behavior into 4 types: rational-insight counseling, affective-insight counseling, affective-action counseling, and rational-action counseling. Ss met with 1 of 2 distinctly different coached clients in a 4-min videotaped microcounseling interview in which both self- and peer ratings were obtained. No significant differences were found between intended and actual behavior as perceived by the counselors themselves, but their intended behavior was significantly different from peer perceptions of interview behavior. Client type had no effect. Results indicate that beginning counselors have a need to see their counseling as being theoretically consistent, even when peer ratings indicate a gap between the beginning theoretical stance and actual practice. This study examined the mediating effects of the self-stigma associated with seeking counseling and attitudes toward seeking counseling on the link between perceived public stigma and willingness to seek counseling for psychological and interpersonal concerns. Structural equation modeling of data from 676 undergraduates indicated that the link between perceived public stigma and willingness to seek counseling was fully mediated by self-stigma and attitudes. Perceptions of public stigma contributed to the experience of self-stigma, which, in turn, influenced help-seeking attitudes and eventually help-seeking willingness. Furthermore, 57% of the variance in attitudes toward counseling and 34% of the variance in willingness to seek counseling for psychological and interpersonal concerns were accounted for in the proposed model. The academic records of 562 students who had requested counseling for personal concerns during a l-year period were examined after a 2-year interval to determine academic outcome. Analyses showed that students receiving counseling enjoyed a retention advantage relative to noncounseled students. Results of a probit analysis showed a positive, negatively accelerating dose–response relationship between number of counseling sessions and student retention. Estimated rates of childhood sexual abuse vary depending on the population studied, the definition used, and the researchers' methodology. A major issue concerns whether it is necessary to query persons, such as therapy clients, regarding prior sexual abuse or whether disclosure of such information will occur spontaneously in therapy. The present research focused on reported rates of childhood sexual abuse in 300 clients seeking help at a university counseling center, obtained through direct interview questioning, pencil-and-paper questioning, and client records. The results indicated significant differences in prevalence rates between clients who were directly queried and clients from whom information was expected to arise during the course of treatment. Data from a community-based multicenter study of motivational enhancement therapy (MET) and counseling as usual (CAU) for outpatient substance users were used to examine questions about the role of the alliance in MET and CAU. Most (94%) of the sample met diagnostic criteria for abuse or dependence (primarily alcohol and/or cocaine). Sixteen therapists for CAU and 14 for MET participated. No reliable differences in patient ratings (n = 319) on the Helping Alliance Questionnaire–II (HAq-II) were evident for MET compared to CAU, but significant differences between therapists were found within each condition in mean patient-rated HAq-II scores. Overall, average levels of alliance were high. The between-therapists component of the alliance, but not the within-therapist component, was significantly associated with self-reported days of primary substance use during the follow-up period from Week 4 to Week 16 (Cohen’s d = 0 .39; n = 257). Therapists with either low or very high alliances had relatively poorer average outcomes (quadratic effect, d = 0.44). For therapists in both MET and CAU, increased use of MET fundamental techniques and MET advanced techniques during treatment sessions was associated with higher levels of alliance. It was hypothesized that level of acculturation and counseling style would affect Hispanic students' perceptions of certain counselor attributes and willingness to see a counselor. Pretesting on an acculturation scale placed 94 Hispanic undergraduate college students in one of three types, Hispanic acculturated, bicultural, or Anglo acculturated. The participants viewed a counseling videotape of one of two White female counselors portraying either a directive or a nondirective counseling style and rated her on two scales. Results indicated that acculturation had a significant effect on ratings of trustworthiness and counselor understanding. Counseling style had a significant effect on the students' perception of counselor knowledge of psychology, counselor willingness to help, and on their own willingness to see a counselor. Assessed the impact of school-based social competence training on skills, social adjustment, and self-reported substance use of 282 6th and 7th graders. Training emphasized broad-based competence promotion in conjunction with domain-specific application to substance abuse prevention. The 20-session program comprised 6 units: stress management, self-esteem, problem solving, substances and health information, assertiveness, and social networks. Findings indicated positive training effects on Ss' skills in handling interpersonal problems and coping with anxiety. Teacher ratings revealed improvements in Ss' constructive conflict resolution with peers, impulse control, and popularity. Self-report ratings indicated gains in problem-solving efficacy. Results suggest some preventive impact on self-reported substance use intentions and excessive alcohol use. Considers that many counseling authorities are convinced that the clergyman's religious beliefs and values make him more dogmatic toward and less accepting of the client than are secular counselors. To test this contention, 90 secular counseling students and 58 pastoral counseling students were administered the Inventory of Religious Belief, the Rokeach Dogmatism Scale, and the Test of Counselor Attitudes. Group responses were analyzed with t tests and Mann-Whitney U statistics. Although pastoral counseling students had stronger Christian religious beliefs and less nondogmatic openness and flexibility of belief, they responded at a higher level of client acceptance than secular counseling students.
