Terrestrial or Handheld Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-T/H) and Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) are two popular broadcasting standards that enable digital television transmissions to handheld receivers. This paper presents a comprehensive performance comparison between the physical layers of DVB-T/H and T-DMB when employed for mobile communications. By exploiting a recently proposed fast simulation model, we assess the BER of the two coded OFDM systems in several realistic scenarios, taking into account Rayleigh and Rice channels, different mobile speeds, inner and outer channel coding, channel estimation, and one or two receive antennas. Our comparison shows that the DVB-T/H physical layer performance highly depends on the delay spread of the channel, whereas T-DMB is less sensitive to the frequency selectivity of the channel. As a result, DVB-T/H yields better performance than T-DMB in typical Rayleigh channels with significant delay spread. On the contrary, at high SNR, T-DMB outperforms DVB-T/H in Rice channels with low delay spread. As a side result, we show the performance improvement of DVB-H produced by MPE-FEC at the data link layer.   相似文献

In contrast to mobile television standards such as DVB-H and MediaFLO, the use of existing free-to-air broadcast television in mobile devices is an intriguing concept that has so far garnered little attention. Standards such as DVB-T and analog television broadcast are pervasive worldwide, and their use in mobile applications circumvents many of the deployment challenges facing DVB-H and the like. However, there are severe technical challenges in doing so: mobility, power consumption, antenna performance, and mixer harmonic rejection are just a few of the issues facing the use of free-to-air broadcast in mobile devices. DVB-H trial activities worldwide reveal the industry’s belief in broadcast mobile television as ‘the next big thing’. To date however, these trials are mostly technology-driven and tend to overlook the user. As the past has innumerably proven, end-user acceptance and success of new media innovations are highly dependent on content, as the end-user can be considered as rather technology-agnostic. Handover in Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhelds (DVB-H) aims to provide continuous mobile broadcasting services when a user is traveling through cell boundaries. A good handover control can improve the power efficiency and gain much better reception quality. This letter provides a novel approach for DVB-H handover based on DVB-H/Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) hybrid network, which moves the main handover function from the terminals to the networks, so that it reduces the operation complexity of the terminals and increases the power saving. When the terminal can not receive the DVB-H signal in the transmission shadow areas or because of some other reasons, the UMTS networks may offer the same service to users to make the service continuous. As the UMTS networks have the topology of the DVB-H networks, by communicating with the terminals, the UMTS networks can help the terminals to predict the handover, and avoid unnecessary handover.  相似文献

Television is likely to start being broadcast to PDAs and mobile phones soon, with the help of shrinking screen technologies. With 3G take-up going far slower than operators hoped and the pioneering service in the UK struggling to achieve initial sales targets, stakeholders from network operators to content providers are looking at more reliable ways of generating money in a saturated handset market. Adding broadcast television functionality to mobile devices, whether they are phones or personal digital assistants, could be the answer. Getting a 100 second video clip to a million mobile subscribers at 100 kbps could occupy an entire 3G network for up to 15 minutes, while the same content could be delivered by the broadcast route using only around 0.1% of capacity. A new standard, DVB-H, will address issues like power saving. Impatient broadcasters may use existing platforms to deliver services rather than waiting for DVB-H. This raises the prospect of a digital audio standard, like DAB, being used to deliver television to a mobile phone. The article outlines some of the research being carried out.  相似文献
