Surface of chitosan (CS) functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was modified by using 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) monomers and the composites were synthesized under microwave irradiation. In this approach, multiwalled carbon nanotubes were functionalized with HEMA and CS in two steps. Firstly, CS was grafted onto the surface and side wall of carbon nanotubes by using microwave irradiation. At the second step, HEMA monomers were grafted onto the polymeric matrix surface. The modified surface of CS functionalized multi‐walled carbon nanotube composites are confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Moreover, Transmission electron microscopic and scanning electron microscopic images show the morphological changes of the carbon nanotubes. Thermal gravimetric analysis shows content of HEMA–CS functionalized MWCNTs in the composites. Dispersibility of pristine MWCNTs was compared with dispersibility of resultant composites in aqueous phase as well. Results show that composites have higher dispersibility in aqueous phase. Considering the biomedical importance of HEMA monomers and CS polymer, in future, these materials are expected to be useful in the pharmaceutical industry as novel biomaterials composites with potential applications in drug delivery. Poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) composites containing multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared using a melt‐blending process and used to examine the effects on the composite structure and properties of replacing PBT with acrylic acid‐grafted PBT (PBT‐g‐AA). PBT‐g‐AA and multihydroxyl‐functionalized MWCNTs (MWCNTs‐OH) were used to improve the compatibility and dispersibility of the MWCNTs within the PBT matrix. The composites were characterized morphologically using transmission electron microscopy, and chemically using Fourier transform infrared, solid‐state 13C NMR and UV‐visible absorption spectroscopy. The antibacterial and electrical conductivity properties of the composites were also evaluated. MWCNTs or MWCNTs‐OH enhanced the antibacterial activity and electrical conductivity of the PBT/MWCNT or PBT‐g‐AA/MWCNTs‐OH composites. The functionalized PBT‐g‐AA/MWCNTs‐OH composites showed markedly enhanced antibacterial properties and electrical conductivity due to the formation of ester bonds from the condensation of the carboxylic acid groups of PBT‐g‐AA with the hydroxyl groups of MWCNTs‐OH. The optimal proportion of MWCNTs‐OH in the composites was 1 wt%; in excess of this amount, the compatibility between the organic and inorganic phases was compromised. The ultrasonically assisted preparation and characterization of poly(amide‐imide) (PAI) composites containing functionalized multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are reported. To improve the dispersion in and compatibility with the polymer matrix, the MWCNTs were surface‐modified with p‐aminophenol (p‐AP) under microwave irradiation. The process is fast, one‐pot, easy and results in a high degree of functionalization as well as dispersibility in organic solvents. The p‐AP‐functionalized MWCNTs (MWCNTs‐AP) were analysed by means of field emission and transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results consistently confirm the formation of p‐AP functionalities on MWCNTs which are able to undergo additional reactions, while the structure of the MWCNTs remains relatively intact. MWCNTs‐AP/PAI hybrid films were prepared with various MWCNTs‐AP contents (5–15 wt%) using a solution‐casting technique. Microscopic observations show that the dispersion of the MWCNTs‐AP is improved as a result of the organic groups on the MWCNT surface and functional groups in the PAI structure. The properties of the obtained composites were characterized extensively using the aforementioned techniques. TGA results show that the hybrid films exhibit a good thermal stability. Tensile mechanical testing was performed for the prepared composites, the results of which indicate an increase in the elastic modulus and tensile strength with increasing MWCNTs‐AP content. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The effect of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified by a hydrophilic ionic liquids (ILs), including 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bromide and 1‐hexyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bromide, was studied. The obtained water‐suspensible carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were still homogeneously distributed in water a month after sonication. The microstructural development of filler networks and the uniform dispersion of MWCNTs in the presence of IL were analyzed by TEM. The apparent physical (cation–π/π–π) interaction between the MWCNTs and the IL was characterized by Raman spectroscopy, DSC, and TGA. Furthermore, high‐performance composites of natural rubber latex (NRL) and CNTs modified with IL were obtained by the liquid latex blending method. The CNTs were homogeneously distributed in the matrix and CNT–ILs improved the fatigue resistance and mechanical properties of the NRL/CNT–IL composites. This study demonstrates a simple and eco‐friendly approach to develop multifunctional advanced materials based on IL‐modified MWCNT elastomer composites. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. A non‐covalent approach is used to modify multi‐wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) via a block polymer that can be synthesized in aqueous solvent through reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The block polymer consists of oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate and acrylic acid. The hydrophobic backbone is significantly adsorbed on hydrophobic MWCNT surfaces, which is verified using transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The coated block polymer can prevent the aggregation of MWCNTs and improve their dispersibility in water. The MWCNTs after modification are stable in water even after standing in a long‐term test. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Introduction of hydrogen bonding sites onto multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) included carboxylic acid, amide‐amine, and novel amide‐urea MWCNTs for the formation of homogenous polyurethane composites. Acid oxidation and subsequent derivatization introduced hydrogen bonding functionality onto MWCNTs to reveal the effect of surface functionalization on mechanical properties in a 45 wt% hard segment polyurethane matrix. Raman spectroscopy showed an increase in the D/G peak ratio, which indicated successful oxidation, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy also revealed elemental compositions that supported each step of the functionalization strategy. Thermogravimetric analysis supported functionalization with an increase in percent weight loss for each functionalization, and the MWCNT surface functionalization determined pH‐dependent dispersibility. The nonfunctionalized MWCNT composites showed poor dispersion with transmission electron microscopy, and in sharp contrast, the functionalized composites displayed homogenous dispersions. Tensile testing revealed improved stress at break in the functionalized MWCNT composites at low loadings due to homogenous dispersion. POLYM. Composites of two hot melt adhesives based on co‐polyamides, one high viscosity (coPA_A), the other low viscosity (coPA_B), and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared using twin‐screw extrusion via dilution of masterbatches. Examination of these composites across the length scales confirmed that the MWCNTs were uniformly dispersed and distributed in the polymer matrices, although some micron size agglomerations were also observed. A rheological percolation was determined from oscillatory rheology measurements at a mass fraction of MWCNTs below 0.01 for coPA_B and, between 0.01 and 0.02 for coPA_A. Significant increases in complex viscosity and storage modulus confirmed the “pseudo‐solid” like behavior of the composite materials. Electrical percolation, determined from dielectric spectroscopy was, found to be at 0.03 and 0.01 MWCNT mass fraction for coPA_A and coPA_B based composites, respectively. Addition of MWCNTs resulted in heterogeneous nucleation and altered the crystallization kinetics of both copolymers. Indirect evidence from contact angle measurements and surface energy calculations confirmed that MWCNT addition enhanced the adhesive properties of coPA_B to a level similar to coPA_A. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, flexible three phase composite films were prepared with surface functionalized multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (f‐MWCNTs) and bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3;BFO) particles embedded into the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix via solution casting technique. The properties and the microstructure of prepared composites were investigated using an impedance analyzer and field emission scanning electron microscope. The micro‐structural study showed that the f‐MWCNTs and BFO particles were dispersed homogeneously within the PVDF matrix, nicely seated on the floor of the f‐MWCNTs separately. The dielectric measurement result shows that the resultant composites with excellent dielectric constant (≈96) and relatively lower dielectric loss (<0.23 at 100 Hz). Furthermore, the percolation theory is explored to explain the dielectric properties of the resultant composites. It says that the percolation threshold of fMWCNTs = 0.9 wt % and the enhancement of the dielectric constant of the composite was also discussed. In addition, the remnant polarization of the un‐poled PVDF‐BFO‐f‐MWCNTs composites (2Pr ~1.34 µC/cm2 for 1.1 wt % of f‐MWCNTs) is also improved. These three phase composites provide a new insight to fabricate flexible and enhanced dielectric properties as a promising application in modern electrical and electronic devices. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An ultraviolet light initiated “graft from” polymerization method to fabricate polymer‐functionalized single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with pendant pH‐ and temperature‐responsive polymer chains is utilized. The attached polymer chains, formed from methacrylic acid and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate monomers, are well established for its pH‐responsive swelling/deswelling behavior. This special property was utilized here to control the aqueous dispersibility of the carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide), a temperature‐responsive polymer, was utilized in the fabrication of SWNTs whose dispersibility was dependent on solution temperature. The morphology of the polymer‐functionalized carbon nanotubes was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) before and after functionalization. Environmental SEM was used to further characterize the morphology of the functionalized SWNTs. In addition, covalent bonding of the polymer to the carbon nanotube surface was established using Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic techniques. The physical and chemical properties of the functionalized nanotubes were further characterized by energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 58: 2980–2986, 2012  相似文献

Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) composites containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared using a melt-blending process. This study presents a novel and simple modification of cladding multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using organic polymer and inorganic nanoparticles to synthesize a product, which has a double‐cladding coaxial structure and can be applied as filler in the dielectric field. The first layer of MWCNTs was coated with polyaniline (PANI) through the oxidation–reduction reaction mechanism using Ce(NH4)2(NO3)6 as oxidizing agent and metal precursor of cerium oxide. Cerium ions on the second cladding layer of MWCNTs were directly deposited from the solution to the surface of the PANI layer forming the double‐cladding hybrid (CeO2/PANI@MWCNTs). The external inorganic layer provides an insulating shell, which can prevent the contact between the conductive particles and hinder the migration of electrons between the MWCNTs. The intermediate layer of PANI provides the bonding between CeO2 and the conductive core of MWCNTs, which also shows lower conductivity than carbon nanotubes. The CeO2/PANI@MWCNTs were compounded with epoxy (EP) resin and formed a dielectric material with the advantage of reducing dielectric loss while ensuring high dielectric constant. The dielectric constant of the coated MWCNTs/EP composites was 194.90 at 103 Hz with the content of fillers reaching 30 wt %, which is 28 times that of the pure EP. Accordingly, the dielectric loss of 30 wt % coated MWCNTs/EP composites was only 0.09 at 103 Hz, which is only 2.25 times that of the pure EP. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The novel thermosensitive and visible‐light responsible composites composed of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐maleic anhydride modified β‐cyclodextrin) hydrogels (poly(NIPAM‐co‐MAH‐β‐CD)) and TiO2 doped with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (TiO2‐MWCNTs) were prepared by an aqueous solution polymerization method with N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as crosslinker, potassium persulfate as initiator, NIPAM and MAH‐β‐CD as monomers, and TiO2‐MWCNTs as functional filler. The structure and properties of the as‐prepared thermosensitive composites were characterized with FTIR, XRD, XPS, TEM, BET, and UV‐vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The thermoresponsive property of the composites prepared under various synthesis conditions was investigated using equilibrium swelling ratio measurements at temperatures ranging from 20 to 45°C. The swelling mechanism and kinetics of the composites were determined by analyzing the rate of swelling. The photocatalytic behavior of the thermosensitive composites was evaluated from the extent of removal of methyl orange (MO) from solutions under solar light irradiation. It was found that the thermosensitive composites have better removal efficiency of MO than pure TiO2. The thermosensitive composites exhibited easy separation and less deactivation after several runs. The advantages of the thermosensitive composites revealed its great practical potential in wastewater treatment. POLYM. COMPOS., 2013. © 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are capable of traversing cellular membranes by endocytosis and are therefore promising materials for use in imaging and drug delivery. Unfortunately, pristine CNTs are practically insoluble and tend to accumulate inside cells, organs and tissues. To overcome the poor dispersibility and toxicity of pristine CNTs, hydrophilic functionalization of CNTs has been intensively investigated. Water‐soluble multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by in situ polymerization of acrylic acid in a poor solvent for poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The solvent type influenced the grafted density and chain length of PAA. MWCNTs with a high grafted density of PAA (22 wt%) could be well dispersed in water, NaCl aqueous solution (0.9 wt%) and cell culture media. The in vitro cytotoxicity of these MWCNTs for endothelial cells is reasonably low even at high concentration of PAA‐g‐MWCNT (70 µg mL?1). The experimental results show that the biocompatibility of these MWCNTs is sufficient for biological applications. PAA‐g‐MWCNTs were successfully utilized for lymph node tracing. Experimental results suggest that PAA‐g‐MWCNTs have potential to be used as a vital staining dye, which may simplify the identification of lymph nodes during surgery. To obtain advanced materials with a high thermal dissipation, the addition of multiwalled carbon nanotubes containing diverse functionality groups, that is, as‐received multiwalled carbon nanotubes (AS‐MWCNTs) and diaminobenzoyl multiwalled carbon nanotubes (DA‐MWCNTs), to epoxy–anhydride composites was accomplished. According to nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry analysis, the reactive functional groups present on the surfaces of the AS‐MWCNTs and DA‐MWCNTs accelerated the nucleophilic addition reaction of epoxy composites. Because of the difference in the reactivities of these functional groups toward epoxy groups, the distinction of fractional conversion and the reaction rate of the curing process were remarkably evident at the early stage. A suitable kinetic model was effectively elucidated with the Málek approach. The curing kinetics could best be described by a two‐parameter autocatalytic model as a truncated ?esták–Berggren model. The DA‐MWCNTs achieved effective load transfer and active heat conductive pathways; this resulted in good dynamic mechanical and thermal properties. As a result, the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A/DA‐MWCNTs constituted an effective system with enhanced heat dissipation of materials for electronic applications. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. A series of polyphenylene sulfones were synthesized with pyrene groups in the main chain. Using a traditional Suzuki coupling reaction followed by a reduction, the pyrene-containing monomer was synthesized as the diphenol. A series of copolymers were synthesized using this new monomer, a biphenyldiphenol, and 4,4′-difluorodiphenylsulfone. These polymers were characterized using 1HNMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The introduction of rigid pyrene groups provided these new polymers with good thermal stability and mechanical strength. In this work, these polymers are shown to functionalize and disperse multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The associations of our copolymers to the MWCNTs appear to operate through pi stacking interactions between the pyrene group and the sidewalls of the MWCNTs, referred to in this article as f-MWCNTs. The dispersibility of f-MWCNTs in solvents and polymer matrixes was systematically studied by preparation of f-MWCNTs/polyphenylene sulfone (PPSU) composites with various f-MWCNTs content. Improvements in the dispersability of f-MWCNTs in PPSU resin result in enhancement of the mechanical and thermal properties of f-MWCNTs/PPSU composites. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The polypropylene‐grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PP‐MWCNTs) were produced from the reaction of PP containing the hydroxyl groups and MWCNTs having 2‐bromoisobutyryl groups. The PP‐MWCNTs had a significantly rougher surface than the original MWCNTs. PP‐MWCNTs had PP layers of thickness 10–15 nm on the outer walls of the MWCNTs. PP/PP‐MWCNT composites and PP/MWCNT composites were prepared by solution mixing in o‐xylene. Unlike PP/MWCNT composites, PP‐MWCNTs were homogeneously dispersed in the PP matrix. As a consequence, the thermal stability and conductivity of PP/PP‐MWCNT composites were dramatically improved even if only 1 wt % of PP‐MWNTs was added to the PP matrix. The good miscibility of PP and PP‐MWCNTs plays a critical role in the formation of the homogeneous composites and leads the high thermal stability and conductivity. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study investigates the effect of the thiol‐ene click reaction on thermal conductivity and shear strength of the epoxy composites reinforced by various silane‐functionalized hybrids of sulfhydryl‐grafted multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (SH‐MWCNTs) and vinyl‐grafted MWCNTs (CC‐MWCNTs). The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that the sulfhydryl groups and vinyl groups are successfully grafted onto the surface of MWCNTs, after treatment of MWCNT with triethoxyvinylsilane and 3‐mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), HotDisk thermal constant analyzer (HotDisk), optical microscope, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are used to characterize the resultant composites. It is demonstrated that the hybrid of 75 wt % SH‐MWCNTs and 25 wt % CC‐MWCNTs has better dispersion and stability in epoxy matrix, and shows a stronger synergistic effect in improving the thermal conductivity of epoxy composite via the thiol‐ene click reaction with 2,2′‐azobis(2‐methylpropionitrile) as thermal initiator. Furthermore, the tensile shear strength results of MWCNT/epoxy composites and the optical microscopy photographs of shear failure section indicate that the composite with the hybrid MWCNTs has higher shear strength than that with raw MWCNTs. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel noncovalent and inorganic method was used to disperse multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in aqueous solutions through alumina-coated silica (ACS) nanoparticle halos. MWCNTs were directly dispersed into a highly charged ACS nanoparticle aqueous solution without functionalization of their surfaces. The dispersed MWCNTs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Raman spectroscopy of MWCNTs prepared from dispersion in the ACS solution revealed reduced bundling compared to the corresponding untreated MWCNTs. The characteristic Raman peak at about 1570 cm−1, corresponding to the G band, shifted to a higher wavenumber with a narrower peak. It was possible to disperse up to 20 mg/mL of MWCNTs in a 1 wt% ACS nanoparticle aqueous solution at pH 2. This homogeneous MWCNT-ACS aqueous solution was stable for weeks after ultrasonication.  相似文献

In this article, copper (Cu) crystallites were successfully prepared via low temperature molten salt method, and the possible formation mechanisms were proposed. The conductive fillers of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and as‐prepared Cu particles were designed and introduced into acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) blend to prepare different conductive composites. The dispersion states of conductive fillers and the morphologies of the composites were characterized using a field emission scanning electron microscope. The electrical resistivity of different composites was measured. The results showed that Cu and MWCNTs exhibited a synergistic effect in decreasing the electrical resistivity of the Cu/MWCNTs/ABS composites, because Cu that could locate between MWCNTs chain segments provides a better charge transport in the conductive pathways. Compared with pure ABS, the tensile strength, elastic modulus and thermal stability of the Cu/MWCNTs/ABS composites were significantly improved with the incorporation of Cu and MWCNTs. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
