A material model based on the Puck phenomenological failure criteria for fibre and inter-fibre failure of glass-fibre and carbon-fibre reinforced polymer composites is presented. The model is applied through a user-defined material subroutine for 3D shell elements. Sub-modelling is used for detailed analysis of the highest stressed regions in the blades. The material model is incorporated into a methodology for the design and analysis of composite tidal current turbine blades. The methodology employs an iterative design process with respect to a number of failure criteria to ensure optimal structural and material performance of the blade. The methodology is automated using the Python programming language to enable efficient variation of model parameters for various design conditions. The forces acting on the blades are determined from blade element momentum theory for a number of turbine operating conditions. The results of a design case study for a typical horizontal axis device are presented to demonstrate the methodology.  相似文献

An investigation is performed on the implementation of bending-torsion coupling of a composite wind turbine rotor blade to provide passive pitch-control. Limited passive torsion deformation is realised with a structural coupling between flapwise bending and elastic twist of a constant speed rotor-blade. The blade and skin laminate configuration are analysed with a FEM program, in which a complete blade with spar webs is modelled. This conventional blade configuration has some disadvantages. Therefore alternative design concepts are reviewed, where the coupling plies are restricted to a load-bearing spar, while a softer skin provides for the aerodynamic shape. From additional analysis, it is found that, while for the two alternative design concepts the stress concentrations at the leading edge joint are bypassed, the bending-torsion coupling response is lower. An experiment was performed to validate the calculation methods. The experimental results show good correlation with theoretical predictions. It is recommended to investigate further the fatigue life properties of a glass/carbon hybrid FRP with off-axis fibre orientations.  相似文献

As wind turbines continue to grow in size, it becomes increasingly important to ensure that they are as structurally efficient as possible to ensure that wind energy can be a cost‐effective source of power generation. A way to achieve this is through weight reductions in the blades of the wind turbine. In this study, topology optimization is used to find alternative structural configurations for a 45 m blade from a 3 MW wind turbine. The result of the topology optimization is a layout that varies along the blade length, transitioning from a structure with trailing edge reinforcement to one with offset spar caps. Sizing optimization was then performed on a section with the trailing edge reinforcement and was shown to offer potential weight savings of 13.8% when compared with a more conventional design. These findings indicate that the conventional structural layout of a wind turbine blade is sub‐optimal under the static load conditions that were applied, suggesting an opportunity to reduce blade weight and cost. The hydrodynamic forces imparted on a tidal turbine rotor, whilst causing it to rotate and hence generate power, will also cause the blades to deform. This deformation will affect the turbine's performance if not included in the early design phase and could lead to a decrease in power output and a reduction in operational life. Conversely, designing blades to allow them to deform slightly may reduce localised stress and therefore prolong the life of the blades and allow the blades to deform in to their optimum operational state. The aim of this paper is to better understand the kinetic energy extraction by varying the material modulus of a turbine blade. Shaft torque/power, blade tip displacement, and axial thrust results are presented for 2, 3 and 4 bladed rotor configurations at peak power extraction. For the rotor design studied the FSI model data show that there is a low sensitivity to blade deformation for the 2, 3 and 4 bladed rotors. However, the results reveal that the 3 bladed rotor displayed maximum hydrodynamic performance as a rigid structure which then decreased as the blade deformed. The 2 and 4 bladed rotor configurations elucidated a slight increase in hydrodynamic performance with deflection.  相似文献

Large wind turbine blades are being developed at lengths of 75–100 m, in order to improve energy capture and reduce the cost of wind energy. Bending loads in the inboard region of the blade make large blade development challenging. The “biplane blade” design was proposed to use a biplane inboard region to improve the design of the inboard region and improve overall performance of large blades. This paper focuses on the design of the internal “biplane spar” structure for 100-m biplane blades. Several spars were designed to approximate the Sandia SNL100-00 blade (“monoplane spar”) and the biplane blade (“biplane spar”). Analytical and computational models are developed to analyze these spars. The analytical model used the method of minimum total potential energy; the computational model used beam finite elements with cross-sectional analysis. Simple load cases were applied to each spar and their deflections, bending moments, axial forces, and stresses were compared. Similar performance trends are identified with both the analytical and computational models. An approximate buckling analysis shows that compressive loads in the inboard biplane region do not exceed buckling loads. A parametric analysis shows biplane spar configurations have 25–35% smaller tip deflections and 75% smaller maximum root bending moments than monoplane spars of the same length and mass per unit span. Root bending moments in the biplane spar are largely relieved by axial forces in the biplane region, which are not significant in the monoplane spar. The benefits for the inboard region could lead to weight reductions in wind turbine blades. Innovations that create lighter blades can make large blades a reality, suggesting that the biplane blade may be an attractive design for large (100-m) blades.  相似文献

This paper proposes a model considering the wave‐current interactions in dynamic analyses of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) and investigates the interaction effects on the FOWT responses. Waves when traveling on current are affected by the current, leading to frequency shift and shape modification. To include such interactions in FOWT analysis, which has not been considered by the researchers till date, a nonlinear hydrodynamic model for multicable mooring systems is presented that is able to consider the cable geometric nonlinearity, seabed contact, and the current effect. The mooring model is then coupled with a spar‐type FOWT model that handles the structural dynamics of turbine blades and tower, aerodynamics of the wind‐blade interaction, and wave‐current effects on the spar. The analytical wave‐current interaction model based on Airy theory considering the current effect is used in the computation of flow velocity and acceleration. Numerical studies are then carried out based on the NREL offshore 5‐MW baseline wind turbine supported on top of the OC3‐Hywind spar buoy. Two cases, (1) when the currents are favorable and (2) when the currents are adverse, are examined. Differences of up to 15% have been observed by comparing the cable fairlead tension obtained excluding and including the wave‐current interactions. In particular, when irregular waves interact with adverse current, a simple superposition treatment of the wave and the current effects seems to underestimate the spar motion and the cable fairlead tension. This indicates that the wave‐current interaction is an important aspect and is needed to be considered in FOWT analysis.  相似文献

Froude scaling is a generally reliable way to design models of floating wind turbines for wave basin testing. However, the resulting rotor thrust of the model is far lower than the Froude-scaled value of a full-size turbine, because the reduction in Reynolds number decreases the lift coefficients and increases the drag coefficients (the Reynolds number scaling effect). A 1/50th scale model wind turbine based on a NREL-5MW reference turbine is examined here. To mitigate the Reynolds number scaling effect in the model, the original aerofoils of the reference turbine (DU series and NACA 64-618) were replaced by an aerofoil at a low Reynolds number (NACA 4412). Such a model with aerofoil-adjusted blades was used in the mathematical optimization of rotor thrust. The design objective was to guarantee that while the rotor thrust of the model equalled the Froude-scaled rotor thrust of the reference, the smallest chord lengths were achieved, considering the weight control in building the model blade. The distribution of chord lengths fitted a fourth-order polynomial curve, and the distribution of twist angles along the blade fitted a second-order polynomial curve. The eight coefficients of the two curves were chosen as optimization variables, and pattern search method was used to solve the optimization model. The model blade was designed at zero pitch angle and further tested in FAST, a fully coupled simulation tool. A model test was conducted using the optimized blade geometry in the State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering in Shanghai, China, and the thrusts were compared with the predicted values.  相似文献

The study concentrates on the shape design and numerical analysis of a 1 MW horizontal axis tidal current turbine (HATCT), which can be applied near the southwest regions of Korea. On the basis of actual tidal current conditions of south-western region of Korea, configuration design of 1 MW class turbine rotor blade is carried out by blade element momentum theory (BEMT). The hydrodynamic performance including the lift and drag forces, is conducted with the variation of the angle of attack using an open source code of X-Foil. The optimized blade geometry is used for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis with hexahedral numerical grids. This study focuses on developing a new hydrofoil and designing a blade with relatively shorter chord length in contrast to a typical TCT blade. Therefore, after a thorough study of two common hydrofoils, (S814 and DU-91-W2-250, which show good performance for rough conditions), a new hydrofoil, MNU26, is developed. The new hydrofoil has a 26% thickness that can be applied throughout the blade length, giving good structural strength. Power coefficient, pressure and velocity distributions are investigated according to Tip Speed Ratio by CFD analysis. As cavitation analysis is also an important part of the study, it is investigated for all the three hydrofoils. Due to the shorter chord length of the new turbine blade in contrast to a typical TCT blade design, a Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis is also done. Concrete conclusions have been made after comparing the three hydrofoils, considering their performance, efficiency, occurrence of cavitation and structural feasibility.  相似文献

Wind turbine design codes for calculating blade loads are usually based on a blade element momentum (BEM) approach. Since wind turbine rotors often operate in off‐design conditions, such as yawed flow, several engineering methods have been developed to take into account such conditions. An essential feature of a BEM code is the coupling of local blade element loads with an external (induced) velocity field determined with momentum theory through the angle of attack. Local blade loads follow directly from blade pressure measurements as performed in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) phase IV campaign, but corresponding angles of attack cannot (on principle) be measured. By developing a free wake vortex method using measured local blade loads, time‐dependent angle of attack and induced velocity distributions are reconstructed. In a previous paper, a method was described for deriving such distributions in conjunction with blade pressure measurements for the NREL phase VI wind turbine in axial (non‐yawed) conditions. In this paper, the same method is applied to investigate yawed conditions on the same turbine. The study considered different operating conditions in yaw in both attached and separated flows over the blades. The derived free wake geometry solutions are used to determine induced velocity distributions at the rotor blade. These are then used to determine the local (azimuth time dependent) angle of attack, as well as the corresponding lift and drag for each blade section. The derived results are helpful to develop better engineering models for wind turbine design codes. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The behaviour of Tidal Stream Turbines (TST) in the dynamic flow field caused by waves and rotor misalignment to the incoming flow (yaw) is currently unclear. The dynamic loading applied to the turbine could drive the structural design of the power capture and support subsystems, device size and its proximity to the water surface and sea bed. In addition, the strongly bi-directional nature of the flow encountered at many tidal energy sites may lead to devices omitting yaw drives; accepting the additional dynamic loading associated with rotor misalignment and reduced power production in return for a reduction in device capital cost. Therefore it is imperative to quantify potential unsteady rotor loads so that the TST device design accommodates the inflow conditions and avoids an unacceptable increase in maintenance action or, more seriously, suffers sudden structural failure. The experiments presented in this paper were conducted using a 1:20th scale 3-bladed horizontal axis TST at a large towing tank facility. The turbine had the capability to measure rotor thrust and torque whilst one blade was instrumented to acquire blade root strain, azimuthal position and rotational speed all at high frequency. The maximum out-of-plane bending moment was found to be as much as 9.5 times the in-plane bending moment. A maximum loading range of 175% of the median out-of-plane bending moment and 100% of the median in-plane bending moment was observed for a turbine test case with zero rotor yaw, scaled wave height of 2 m and intrinsic wave period of 12.8 s.A new tidal turbine-specific Blade-Element Momentum (BEM) numerical model has been developed to account for wave motion and yawed flow effects. This model includes a new dynamic inflow correction which is shown to be in close agreement with the measured experimental loads. The gravitational component was significant to the experimental in-plane blade bending moment and was also included in the BEM model. Steady loading on an individual blade at positive yaw angles was found to be negligible in comparison to wave loading (for the range of experiments conducted), but becomes important for the turbine rotor as a whole, reducing power capture and rotor thrust. The inclusion of steady yaw effects (using the often-applied skewed axial inflow correction) in a BEM model should be neglected when waves are present or will result in poor load prediction reflected by increased loading amplitude in the 1P (once per revolution) phase.  相似文献

This paper deals with numerical modeling of the hydraulic blade pitch actuator and its effect on the dynamic responses of a floating spar‐type wind turbine under valve fault conditions. A spar‐type floating wind turbine concept is modeled and simulated using an aero‐hydro‐servo‐elastic simulation tool (Simo‐Riflex [SR]). Because the blade pitch system has the highest failure rate, a numerical model of the hydraulic blade pitch actuator with/without valve faults is developed and linked to SR to study the effects of faults on global responses of the spar‐type floating wind turbine for different faults, fault magnitudes, and environmental conditions. The consequence of valve faults in the pitch actuator is that the blade cannot be pitched to the desired angle, so there may be a delay in the response due to excessive friction and the wrong voltage, or slit lock may cause runaway blade pitch. A short circuit may cause the blade to get stuck at a particular pitch angle. These faults contribute to rotor imbalance, which result in different effects on the turbine structure and the platform motions. The proposed method for combining global and hydraulic actuator models is demonstrated in case studies with stochastic wind and wave conditions and different types of valve faults.  相似文献

A modeling framework is proposed and validated to simulate turbine wakes and associated power losses in wind farms. It combines the large-eddy simulation (LES) technique with blade element theory and a turbine-model-specific relationship between shaft torque and rotational speed. In the LES, the turbulent subgrid-scale stresses are parameterized with a tuning-free Lagrangian scale-dependent dynamic model. The turbine-induced forces and turbine-generated power are modeled using a recently developed actuator-disk model with rotation (ADM-R), which adopts blade element theory to calculate the lift and drag forces (that produce thrust, rotor shaft torque and power) based on the local simulated flow and the blade characteristics. In order to predict simultaneously the turbine angular velocity and the turbine-induced forces (and thus the power output), a new iterative dynamic procedure is developed to couple the ADM-R turbine model with a relationship between shaft torque and rotational speed. This relationship, which is unique for a given turbine model and independent of the inflow condition, is derived from simulations of a stand-alone wind turbine in conditions for which the thrust coefficient can be validated. Comparison with observed power data from the Horns Rev wind farm shows that better power predictions are obtained with the dynamic ADM-R than with the standard ADM, which assumes a uniform thrust distribution and ignores the torque effect on the turbine wakes and rotor power. The results are also compared with the power predictions obtained using two commercial wind-farm design tools (WindSim and WAsP). These models are found to underestimate the power output compared with the results from the proposed LES framework.  相似文献

This paper presents a model for the evaluation of aerodynamic and inertial contributions to a vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) blade deformation. Through the use of a specially designed coupling code, a solid modeling software, capable of generating the desired blade geometry depending on the design geometric parameters, is linked to a finite volume Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) code for the calculation of rotor performance and to a Finite Element Method (FEM) code for the structural design analysis of rotor blades. After describing the computational model and the relative validation procedure, a full RANS unsteady calculation is presented for a three-bladed rotor architecture, characterized by a NACA 0012 profile. Flow field characteristics are investigated for a constant unperturbed free-stream wind velocity of 9 m/s, determining the torque coefficient generated from the three blades as a function of rotor azimuthal coordinate. The emphasis is subsequently placed on obtaining an estimate for both pressure/tangential forces and centrifugal ones to blade structural loadings, thus assessing the influence of aerodynamic and inertial contributions to blade stresses and deformations.  相似文献

Incident flows on wind turbines are often highly turbulent, because these devices operate in the atmospheric boundary layer and often in the wake of other wind turbines. This article presents experimental investigations of the effects of a high turbulence level on wind turbine aerodynamics. Power and thrust are measured on a horizontal axis wind turbine model in the ‘Lucien Malavard’ wind tunnel. A grid is used to generate three turbulence levels (4·4%, 9% and 12%) with integral length scale of the order of magnitude of the chord length. Experiments show little effect of turbulence on the wind turbine model power and thrust. This can be justified by analysis of the aerodynamic loads along the blade. The main objective of this paper is to categorize practical families of horizontal-axis wind turbine rotors, which are optimized to produce the largest possible power output. Refined blade geometry is obtained from the best approximation of the calculated theoretical optimum chord and twist distributions of the rotating blade. The mathematical formulation is based on dimensionless quantities so as to make the aerodynamic analysis valid for any arbitrary turbine models having different rotor sizes and operating at different wind regimes. The selected design parameters include the number of blades, type of airfoil section and the blade root offset from hub center. The effects of wind shear as well as tower shadow are also examined. A computer program has been developed to automate the overall analysis procedures, and several numerical examples are given showing the variation of the power and thrust coefficients with the design tip speed ratio for various rotor configurations.  相似文献
