Recording the olfactory receptor activity of marine fishes presents problems due to the shunting of the electrical signals by the highly conductive sea water, which results in significant signal loss. By recording the large signal-to-noise ratio D. C. potentials using the underwater electro-olfactogram (EOG), we were able to study olfactory receptor properties of freshwater and marine fishes in a comparable manner.  相似文献

Species are the units used to measure ecological diversity and alleles are the units of genetic diversity. Genetic variation within and among species has been documented most extensively using allozyme electrophoresis. This reveals wide differences in genetic variability within, and genetic distances among, species, demonstrating that species are not equivalent units of diversity. The extent to which the pattern observed for allozymes can be used to infer patterns of genetic variation in quantitative traits depends on the forces generating and maintaining variability. Allozyme variation is probably not strictly neutral but, nevertheless, heterozygosity is expected to be influenced by population size and genetic distance will be affected by time since divergence. The same is true for quantitative traits influenced by many genes and under weak stabilizing selection. However, the limited data available suggest that allozyme variability is a poor predictor of genetic variation in quantitative traits within populations. It is a better predictor of general phenotypic divergence and of postzygotic isolation between populations or species, but is only weakly correlated with prezygotic isolation. Studies of grasshopper and planthopper mating signal variation and assortative mating illustrate how these characters evolve independently of general genetic and morphological variation. The role of such traits in prezygotic isolation, and hence speciation, means that they will contribute significantly to the diversity of levels of genetic variation within and among species.  相似文献

We examined mitochondrial DNA polymorphisms via the analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphisms in three closely related species of pines from western North America: knobcone (Pinus attenuata Lemm.), Monterey (P. radiata D. Don), and bishop (P. muricata D. Don). A total of 343 trees derived from 13 populations were analyzed using 13 homologous mitochondrial gene probes amplified from three species by polymerase chain reaction. Twenty-eight distinct mitochondrial DNA haplotypes were detected and no common haplotypes were found among the species. All three species showed limited variability within populations, but strong differentiation among populations. Based on haplotype frequencies, genetic diversity within populations (HS) averaged 0.22, and population differentiation (GST and theta) exceeded 0.78. Analysis of molecular variance also revealed that >90% of the variation resided among populations. For the purposes of genetic conservation and breeding programs, species and populations could be readily distinguished by unique haplotypes, often using the combination of only a few probes. Neighbor-joining phenograms, however, strongly disagreed with those based on allozymes, chloroplast DNA, and morphological traits. Thus, despite its diagnostic haplotypes, the genome appears to evolve via the rearrangement of multiple, convergent subgenomic domains.  相似文献

Hexamitid flagellates from the rectum of the freshwater gadid burbot, from the river Glomma in southeastern Norway, were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The surface morphology of the flagellates was consistent with that of Spironucleus torosa, previously only found in the cod, haddock, and saithe, all marine gadids. Posteriolateral depressions with central protrusions were present in the flagellates, a feature reported from S. torosa only. Further, the microtubular cytoskeleton of the present species had the same general arrangement as in S. torosa, clearly different from what is described for other Spironucleus spp. It is therefore concluded that the present flagellate from burbot is this species. Any recent exchange of parasites between the marine hosts and burbot is believed to be only theoretically possible. The burbot became established in Norwegian rivers and lakes after the last ice age, some 7,000-8,000 yr ago, by following water courses across Sweden from the Baltic Sea. In the Baltic Sea there were, and still are, sympatric populations of burbot and cod, and the burbot is believed to have been infected before migrating westward.  相似文献

Embryos of grayling (Thymallus thymallus) were exposed to different concentrations of methylmercury (0.16, 0.8, 4.0 and 20 micrograms Hg l-1) during the first 10 days of development. The exposure resulted in body concentrations in the newly hatched fry of 0.09, 0.27, 0.63 and 3.80 micrograms Hg g-1 wet wt., respectively. A control group had a body concentration of 0.01 microgram Hg g-1. Morphological disturbances were only found in the highest exposure group. Three years later, at a size of 13.8 +/- 0.8 cm, the different groups were tested for sublethal toxicant effects on foraging behavior. In the first series of experiments we tested the foraging efficiency of the fish when kept alone for 5 min in small flow-through aquariums. In the second series of experiments we tested the competitive ability of eight individuals from an exposed group vs. eight individuals from a control group when kept together for 30 min in a 300-1 aquarium. In both experiments live Dapnia magna were used as prey. We found impaired feeding efficiencies and reduced competitive abilities in grayling from the exposed groups which as yolk-fry had Hg concentrations of 0.27 microgram g-1 or more. In the foraging efficiency experiments these groups were 15-24% less efficient as compared to the control group. In the competitive ability experiments the control group caught two to six times as many preys as these exposed groups. Such harmful body concentrations of Hg (> 0.27 microgram g-1) may be found in eggs from piscivorous fishes in lakes receiving diffuse atmospheric depositions of mercury. We suggest such concentrations may have ecological consequences by reducing the fitness of the affected populations.  相似文献

Two major theories of the evolution of senescence (mutation accumulation and antagonistic pleiotropy) make different predictions about the relationships between age, inbreeding effects, and the magnitude of genetic variance components of life-history components. We show that, under mutation accumulation, inbreeding decline and three major components of genetic variance are expected to increase with age in randomly mating populations. Under the simplest version of the antagonistic pleiotropy model, no changes in the severity of inbreeding decline, dominance variance, or the genetic variance of chromosomal homozygotes are expected, but additive genetic variance may increase with age. Age-specific survival rates and mating success were measured on virgin males, using lines extracted from a population of Drosophila melanogaster. For both traits, inbreeding decline and several components of genetic variance increase with age. The results are consistent with the mutation accumulation model, but can only be explained by antagonistic pleiotropy if there is a general tendency for an increase with age in the size of allelic effects on these life-history traits.  相似文献

Geographic variation at an Mhc class I A1 exon was surveyed in 14 populations of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and 15 populations of chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) inhabiting rivers of British Columbia, Canada. A total of 2,504 fish were sampled using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), which distinguished 17 alleles in coho salmon and 20 alleles in chinook salmon. Heterozygosity at the A1 locus was moderately high for both coho (0.7) and chinook (0.6) salmon, but sequence divergence was low, with mean inter- and intraspecific nucleotide similarities of approximately 0.96. In a maximum parsimony tree, all of the observed alleles clustered into two trans-specific lineages. Within each lineage, coho and chinook alleles tended to fall into species-specific subclusters. Much of the intraspecific allelic variation within each lineage could be accounted for by nonsynonymous point mutation, indicative of balancing selection. The FST values for both coho (0.11) and chinook (0.13) salmon indicated that much of the allelic diversity was partitioned among populations. Neighbor-joining analyses of A1 allelic frequencies among coho and chinook salmon populations showed strong patterns of geographic differentiation similar to those based on neutral genetic markers such as microsatellite loci. Both natural selection and the salmonid zoogeographic history of frequent population bottlenecks have shaped the patterns of diversity observed at this and other Mhc exons in Pacific salmonids.  相似文献

Samples of fish from freshwater sources of rivers, lakes and ponds all over the state of South Carolina were collected during the Summer of 1974 and 1975. The fish collected were Bass, Bluegill, Redbreast, Catfish, Shad, Carp, Crappie, Mudfish and Pike. Samples were analyzed using the flameless atomic absorption procedure outlined by Hatch and Ott, and Uthe et al as modified for use with Perkin-Elmer, Coleman MAS-50 mercury analyzer. Triplicate samples of fish tissue were analyzed by wet digestion method. The mean mercury levels in ppb were determined for baseline mercury levels. A significant finding of this report is that those species for which fish of widely differing weights were analyzed, larger fish had higher mercury levels. Mercury levels exceeding the U.S. Food and Drug Administration guideline of 500 ppb for fish tissues have been found in the Mudfish from Edisto River and Pike fish from Lake Murray. Higher levels of mercury occurred in the highly vascularized blood tissues of liver and kidney than in muscle. Carnivorous and bottom-feeding fishes are the most reliable indicators of mercury pollution.  相似文献

Least squares means, genetic (sigma g) and phenotypic (sigma p) standard deviations, and phenotypic coefficients of variation (CV) were estimated for growth traits of intact males from 12 breed groups combined, for nine purebreds combined, and for the F1, F2, F3, and F4 generations of three composite populations to which the nine purebreds contributed. Heritabilities (h2) and genetic (rg) and phenotypic (rp) correlations were estimated for growth traits, calving difficulty of calves with dams of different ages, and gestation length. Coefficients of variation and sigma g generally were similar for composites and contributing purebreds. Generally, estimates of h2 were similar for all breed groups combined, contributing purebreds combined, and composites combined. Estimates of h2 for calving difficulty were higher for calves with 2-yr-old dams than for calves with dams > or = 3 yr old and were sufficiently high (.27 and .31) to be a useful selection criterion for reducing calving difficulty. Mean h2 pooled within all breed groups ranged from .35 for 200-d weight and 368-d weight to .48 for 368-d height. Estimates of h2 for subjective scores of anatomical traits were only slightly lower than those for growth and size traits. The h2 of scrotal circumference (.43) was similar to those for growth and size traits. Genetic correlations between birth weight and calving difficulty were similar for 1) calves with dams of all ages, 2) calves with 2-yr-old dams, and 3) calves with dams > or = 3 yr old.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Personality traits are a major class of behavioral variation often observed within populations of animals. However, little is known of the integration between personality and an individual's underlying biology. To address this, the authors measured personality traits in squid (Euprymna tasmanica) in 2 contexts while also describing trait correlates with biological parameters. Four traits (shy avoidance- bold aggression, activity, bury persistence, and reactivity) were reliably measured; however, trait expression between contexts was not correlated and thus was context-specific. Trait variation was not a function of gender or of somatic or reproductive condition but was explained partially by a squid's sexual maturity and its size. Results are discussed in terms of the interplay between personality variation and resulting life history strategies in animals. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The effects of terrestrial habitat islands on gene flow and genetic diversity in animal populations have been predicted and discussed in theoretical terms, but empirical data are needed to test these predictions and provide an understanding of the relationships of life-history characteristics to genetics of insular species. We studied saxicolous mice (Phyllotis xanthopygus) in Patagonia to explore genetic structure, phylogeography, and gene flow in a species inhabiting natural habitat islands. Phylogeographic analyses based on mtDNA sequences revealed two haplotype clades, which presumably reflect early Pleistocene factors that temporarily separated the mice into two geographically isolated groups. The Río Chubut, which lies within a glacial drainage basin bisecting northern Patagonia, might have affected gene flow in the species. Although we anticipated isolation by distance and founder phenomena associated with habitat islands, in some habitat patches we found evidence of high local genetic diversity. The amount of divergence in the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (approximately 3.4%) in animals at a single locality could best be explained through a combination of historical factors and metapopulation source-sink theory. Demographic shifts, dispersal, and episodic recolonization are important in the life history and genetic population structure of P. xanthopygus.  相似文献

Four species of exotic monogeneans are reported from five species of exotic freshwater fish in Australia: Gytrodactylus bullatarudis from Poecilia reticulata and Xiphophorus helleri in Queensland; Gyrodactylus macracanthus from Misgurnus anguillicaudatus in the Australian Capital Territory; Dactylogyrus extensus from Cyprinus carpio in the Australian Capital Territory; and Dactylogyrus anchoratus from Carassius auratus in the Australian Capital Territory. This is the first published record of described species of monogeneans of the genus Dactylogyrus or Gyrodactylus from Australia and the first report of parasites of M. anguillicaudatus in Australia. The establishment of exotic monogenean populations on Australian native fishes via host-switching is considered less likely than for other parasitic groups due to the generally high host-specificity of monogeneans, combined with the phylogenetic dissimilarity of native and exotic fishes. Similar establishments have occurred elsewhere, however, and the risk of these events increases with each new fish species introduction.  相似文献

The threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus is an important model in evolutionary and ethologic studies. Its utility would greatly be increased by the availability of molecular markers distinguishing individuals and populations. Such markers can be provided by the major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) genes, which are well known for their extensive polymorphism. In the present study, both class I and class II B Mhc genes have been identified and sequenced. Fifteen distinct class I exon 2 and exon 3 sequences were obtained and assigned to 12 loci on the basis of intron 2 length differences. Some of the loci appear to be related to class I loci identified previously in cichlid fish. The intron 2 sequences and insertions/deletions in exon 2 group the loci into three families (with one family divided further into two subfamilies) derived from different ancestral genes. The ancestors presumably diverged from one another before the divergence of Gasterosteiformes from Perciformes. The 12 distinct class II B sequences may be derived from six loci, which are, however, closely related to one another in both exonic and intronic parts and may have diverged from a single common ancestor after the divergence of Gasterosteiformes from Perciformes. The intron 2 of some of the class I genes contains two microsatellites that can be used as markers, in addition to the polymorphism of the Mhc genes in their exonic regions.  相似文献

Changes in pelvic shape in human ontogeny and hominid phylogeny suggest that the heterochronic processes involved differ greatly from the neotenic process traditionally described in the evolution of the skull. The morphology of 150 juvenile and adult pelves of African apes, 60 juvenile and adult pelves of modern humans, two adult pelves and a juvenile hip bone of australopithecines (Sts 14, AL 288, MLD 7) was studied. Multivariate results, ontogenetic allometries, and growth curves confirm that the pelvic growth pattern in humans differs markedly from those of the African apes. The results permit the following conclusions. First, the appearance of a new feature (acetabulo-cristal buttress and cristal tubercle) at the time of human birth allows the addition of traits, such as the attainment of a proportionally narrower pelvis, with more sagittally positioned iliac blades. Pelvic proportions and orientation change progressively in early childhood as bipedalism is practiced. Other changes in pelvic proportions occur later with the adolescent growth spurt. Second, comparison of juvenile and adult australopithecines to modern humans indicates that 1) some pelvic traits of adult Australopithecus resemble those of neonate Homo; 2) the pelvic growth of Australopithecus was probably closer to that of apes, than to that of humans; and 3) prolonged growth in length of hindlimb and pelvis after sexual maturity seems to be a unique feature of Homo. The position of the acetabulo-cristal buttress and of the cristal tubercle on the ilium are similar in adult Australopithecus and neonate Homo suggesting that this feature may have been displaced later during hominid evolution. Progressive displacement of the acetabulo-cristal buttress on the ilium occurs both during hominid evolution (from Australopithecus to Homo sapiens) and human growth (from neonate to adult). This suggests peramorphic evolution of the pelvic morphology of hominids combining three processes of recapitulation (pre-displacement, acceleration and time hypermorphosis). The results lend credence to the hypothesis that no single heterochronic process accounts for all human evolutionary change; rather this reflects a combination of relative changes in growth rhythm and duration, including other perturbations, such as the appearance of new morphological features.  相似文献

If genetic variation for fitness traits in natural populations ("standing" variation) is maintained by recurrent mutation, then quantitative-genetic properties of standing variation should resemble those of newly arisen mutations. One well-known property of standing variation for fitness traits is inbreeding depression, with its converse of heterosis or hybrid vigor. We measured heterosis for three fitness traits, pre-adult viability, female fecundity, and male fertility, among a set of inbred Drosophilia melanogaster lines recently derived from the wild, and also among a set of lines that had been allowed to accumulate spontaneous mutations for over 200 generations. The inbred lines but not the mutation-accumulation (MA) lines showed heterosis for pre-adult viability. Both sets of lines showed heterosis for female fecundity, but heterosis for male fertility was weak or absent. Crosses among a subset of the MA lines showed that they were strongly differentiated for male fertility, with the differences inherited in autosomal fashion; the absence of heterosis for male fertility among the MA lines was therefore not caused by an absence of mutations affecting this trait. Crosses among the inbred lines also gave some, albeit equivocal, evidence for male fertility variation. The contrast between the results for female fecundity and those for male fertility suggests that mutations affecting different fitness traits may differ in their average dominance properties, and that such differences may be reflected in properties of standing variation. The strong differentiation among the MA lines in male fertility further suggests that mutations affecting this trait occur at a high rate.  相似文献

A new species of Acanthobothrium in Dasyatis longus from Chamela Bay, Jalisco, Mexico, is a member of a presumed clade of species diagnosed by being anapolytic or nearly so, having more than 100 testes per proglottis, with immature and mature proglottides wider than long to square, aspinose scolex, muscular bothridia fused to the scolex at their posterior ends, H- to V -shaped ovaries, relatively short symmetrical to asymmetrical ovarian arms that extend anteriorly to, or nearly to, the cirrus sac, and vitellaria arranged in fields rather than a single row of follicles. The new species most closely resembles Acanthobothrium terezae from the freshwater stingray Potamotrygon motoro in the following characters: bothridial hooks longer than 200 microns with inner hooks having bent asymmetrical prongs, an average of 130-140 testes per proglottis, and shallow genital atria located posterior to midline of proglottis. The new species differs from A. terezae by having outer hooks approximately the same size and shape as the inner hooks, inner hooks averaging 230 microns rather than 313 microns in total length, and cirrus sacs averaging 255 microns rather than 450 microns in length. The new species is unique among all described species of Acanthobothrium by having a cleft in the posterior margin of each apical bothridial pad. The apparent close relationship of the new species to one inhabiting a Neotropical freshwater stingray provides support for the hypothesized Pacific marine ancestry of Neotropical freshwater stingrays and raises the possibility that the Neotropical freshwater stingrays may not be monophyletic.  相似文献

Mapping quantitative trait loci for immune capacity in the pig   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Immune capacity traits show considerable genetic variation in outbred populations. To identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for immune capacity in the pig, various measures of immune function (total and differential leukocyte counts, neutrophil phagocytosis, mitogen-induced proliferation, IL-2 production, and virus induced IFN-alpha production in whole blood cultures, and Ab responses to two Escherichia coli antigens) were determined in 200 F2 animals from a wild pig-Swedish Yorkshire intercross. The pedigree has been typed for 236 genetic markers covering all autosomes, the X chromosome and the X/Y pseudoautosomal region. Through interval mapping using a least-squares method, four QTLs with significant effects were identified; one for total leukocyte counts, one for mitogen-induced proliferation, one for prevaccination levels of Abs to E. coli Ag K88, and one for Ab response to the O149 Ag. In addition, several putative QTLs were indicated. The results from the present study conclusively show that it is possible to identify QTLs for immune capacity traits in outbred pig populations by genome analysis.  相似文献

Effect of high larval density in Drosophila melanogaster cultures on the phenotypic and genetic variation of morphological traits (thorax length, wing length, and number of stempoleural bristles) and on the stability of development (estimated as the fluctuating asymmetry of bilateral traits) was studied. The fluctuating asymmetry of both bilateral traits was higher at high than at low larval density. An increase in phenotypic variation at a high as compared to low density was demonstrated. However, no increase in genetic variation at a high density was revealed.  相似文献

Global studies of within-group genetic variation have revealed a tendency for some traits, but not all, to show higher heterozygosity in sub-Saharan African populations. Although excess African diversity has been interpreted as reflecting a greater "age" of sub-Saharan African populations, more recent research has shown that this excess is more likely a consequence of a larger African long-term effective population size. The observation that certain traits, particularly classic genetic markers and RFLPs, do not show this pattern has been interpreted as ascertainment bias. Here, I examine another possible factor: that excess African heterozygosity is in part a function of mutation rate. Simple equilibrium and nonequilibrium models of absolute excess heterozygosity are examined. The results indicate that there is little excess African heterozygosity for traits with low mutation rates and greater excess heterozygosity for traits with moderate to high aggregate mutation rates. Observed data are consistent with these models. Also, depending on population size and time depth, traits with high levels of mutation might show less excess heterozygosity than those with moderate to high mutation rates. Another measure of diversity, mean sequence divergence, shows an increase in excess diversity for traits with high mutation rates.  相似文献
