Urban stormwater runoff is the primary source of many pollutants to Santa Monica Bay, but its monitoring and modeling is inherently difficult and often requires land use information as an intermediate process. Many approaches have been developed to estimate stormwater pollutant loading from land use. This research investigates an alternative approach, which estimates stormwater pollutant loadings directly from satellite imagery. We proposed a Bayesian network approach to classify a Landsat ETM(+) image of the Marina del Rey area in the Santa Monica Bay watershed. Eight water quality parameters were examined, including: total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, nutrients, heavy metals, and oil and grease. The pollutant loads for each parameter were classified into six levels: very low, low, medium low, medium high, high, and very high. The results provided spatial estimates of each pollutant load as thematic maps from which the greatest pollutant loading areas were identified. These results may be useful in developing best management strategies for stormwater pollution at regional and global scales and in establishing total maximum daily loads in the watershed. The approach can also be used for areas without ground-survey land use data.  相似文献

The PCB contamination in lower Fox River sediments was investigated in order to identify possible PCB sources, contributions, and transformations, using two receptor models. Congener specific sediment PCB data from sites immediately upstream of DePere dam to Green Bay that had been gathered for the Green Bay/Fox River Mass Balance Study, were used in this analysis. The first receptor model is a self training factor analysis (FA) model with non-negative constraints that was applied to identify the PCB sources and significant congener patterns. The second is a chemical mass balance model (CMB) in which published Aroclor sources, inferred from our FA model, were used to apportion these Aroclors to each sample. The FA model indicated two significant factors, the major one being Aroclor 1242 and the other, a profile dominated by low chlorinated congeners, indicating a possible PCB alteration profile. This profile had significant contributions to samples at or around sites with total PCB concentrations higher than 50 ppm, indicating a potential anaerobic dechlorination activity. It was also deduced from the FA model that very small contributions of more highly chlorinated Aroclors may be present in the system. The results from the CMB model confirmed that the system is dominated by Aroclor 1242. Its average contribution was 95%, with small amounts of Aroclor 1254 (2%) and 1260 (1%). Two of the samples, located in the vicinity of point sources, showed high contributions of Aroclor 1016 by the CMB model. This is interpreted as an altered Aroclor profile resembling the less chlorinated Aroclor 1016. Contributions obtained form the CMB and FA models show similar patterns.  相似文献

A benefit of wetland preservation and restoration is the ecosystem service of improving water quality, typically assessed based on bacterial loading. The Ballona Wetlands, a degraded salt marsh of approximately 100 ac located on the southern border of Marina Del Rey (Los Angeles County, California, USA) are currently the focus of publicly funded restoration planning. The wetlands receive tidal water, usually contaminated with fecal indicator bacteria (FIB: total and fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli, enterococci) from the adjacent Ballona Creek and Estuary. During the summer of 2007, two 24-h studies were conducted to determine FIB tidal dynamics within the wetland. Measurements of water flow and mean FIB concentrations (n = 3) were measured every 1.5 h to determine total FIB load estimates. FIB loading rates (MPN/s) were greatest during flood tides as water entered the wetlands, and then again during spring tide conditions when sediments were resuspended during swifter spring ebb flows. During daylight hours, the wetland acted as a sink for these bacteria as loads diminished, presumably by sunlight and other processes. Conversely, during late afternoon and night, the wetlands shifted to being a source as excess FIB departed on ebb flows. Therefore, the wetlands act as both a source and sink for FIB depending on tidal conditions and exposure to sunlight. Future restoration actions would result in a tradeoff - increased tidal channels offer a greater surface area for FIB inactivation, but also would result in a greater volume of FIB-contaminated resuspended sediments carried out of the wetlands on stronger ebb flows. As levels of FIB in Ballona Creek and Estuary diminish through recently established regulatory actions, the wetlands could shift into a greater sink for FIB.  相似文献

Analysis of single marker substances in serum could provide cost-effective assessment of human exposure to complex mixtures of organochlorines. We studied the serum concentrations of 10 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and 11 chlorinated pesticides and some of their metabolites in samples collected from 120 Swedish men (mean age 63 years, range 40-74 years) from the general Swedish population. The median concentrations of individual PCB congeners increased in the order PCB 52 < PCB 101 < or = PCB28 < PCB 105 < PCB 167 < PCB 156 < PCB 118 < PCB 138 < PCB 180 < PCB 153. The concentrations of o,p'-DDT, o,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD, alpha-HCH and gamma-HCH were in most cases below the quantification limit (2-4 ng/g lipid). Among the other chlorinated pesticides the median concentration increased in the order oxychlordane (12 ng/g lipid) < p,p'-DDT < trans-nonachlor < beta-HCH < HCB < p,p'-DDE (586 ng/g lipid). The observed concentrations of PCB and chlorinated pesticides were in the same range as those found in similar groups of men from Sweden and Norway, but lower than those found in male populations with recent occupational exposure or high environmental exposure. Strong relationships were found between the concentrations of single mono- and di-ortho PCB congeners and groups of PCB congeners in serum. In our group of men PCB 153 was a good marker substance for the concentration of sigma PCB and sigma di-ortho PCB concentrations in serum. Moreover, among the mono-ortho PCB congeners analyzed, PCB 156 could be used as a marker for the sigma mono-ortho PCB TEQ concentrations in serum in the studied group. No useful marker substances were found among DDT compounds and other chlorinated pesticides and metabolites, except for trans-nonachlor which predicted the concentration of the metabolite oxychlordane fairly well.  相似文献

The content of chlorinated persistent organic pollutants was determined in a total of 44 egg samples from 8 different raptor species collected throughout Norway in the period 1991-1997. The content of 8 chlorinated bornanes, 9 chlorinated pesticides, and 15 polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCB) were determined. The highest average concentrations for PCB were found for eggs from White-tailed Sea Eagle and Peregrine Falcon (average sum PCB concentration: 8.9 and 9.1 microg/g wet weight (w.w.), respectively). Merlin and Sparrowhawk eggs were the highest contaminated with chlorinated pesticides (average sum pesticide concentration: 3.0 and 4.3 microg/g w.w.). For the first time, the content of chlorobornanes was determined in Norwegian birds of prey eggs. However, only minor contamination compared to PCBs and conventional chlorinated pesticides was found. The highest sum concentration was determined for White-tailed Sea Eagle eggs (0.09 microg/g w.w.). No chlorobornane contamination was found in Osprey and Merlin eggs. No spatial and regional specific trends or pattern distribution were found for organochlorine contamination in the egg samples analysed. In order to gain information about enantiomer specific bioaccumulation and biotransformation capacity of the organism, enantioselective analyses was performed for the chiral contaminants trans-chlordane, oxy-chlordane and the chlorobornane B9-1679 (Parlar #50). Indications for species-dependent deviation from the racemic distribution (enantiomeric ratio = 1) were found. Peregrine Falcon and Merlin eggs were characterised with an extremely high enantiomeric excess of the (-)-trans-chlordane (enantiomeric ratio (ER) <0.01). For Golden Eagle, Goshawk and Sparrowhawk eggs, the ERs were between 0.1 and 0.22 demonstrating also here that the (-)-trans-chlordane was the most abundant enantiomer. For the distribution of oxy-chlordane and B9-1679 enantiomers no species-dependent differences were found. For all species the ER values between 0.3 and 0.8 were determined. Thus, also for oxy-chlordane and B9-1679, the (-)-enantiomers are the most dominating stereoisomers in the birds of prey eggs analysed.  相似文献

Selected polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were measured in Desmarestia sp., an abundant algae in the Antarctica Peninsula and South Shetlands. Samples were collected from various points of Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctic Peninsula, during the 1993-1994 austral summer. Total PCB concentrations ranged from 0.46 to 3.86 ng g(-1) (dry weight). Predominant PCB congeners were 52, 101, 110, 138 and 153. The low levels of PCBs found on all samples and the predominance of low molecular weight congeners indicate that there are no significant local PCBs sources in the area of study.  相似文献

Concentrations and loads of total mercury and methylmercury were measured in streams draining abandoned mercury mines and in the proximity of geothermal discharge in the Cache Creek watershed of California during a 17-month period from January 2000 through May 2001. Rainfall and runoff were lower than long-term averages during the study period. The greatest loading of mercury and methylmercury from upstream sources to downstream receiving waters, such as San Francisco Bay, generally occurred during or after winter rainfall events. During the study period, loads of mercury and methylmercury from geothermal sources tended to be greater than those from abandoned mining areas, a pattern attributable to the lack of large precipitation events capable of mobilizing significant amounts of either mercury-laden sediment or dissolved mercury and methylmercury from mine waste. Streambed sediments of Cache Creek are a significant source of mercury and methylmercury to downstream receiving bodies of water. Much of the mercury in these sediments is the result of deposition over the last 100-150 years by either storm-water runoff, from abandoned mines, or continuous discharges from geothermal areas. Several geochemical constituents were useful as natural tracers for mining and geothermal areas, including the aqueous concentrations of boron, chloride, lithium and sulfate, and the stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen in water. Stable isotopes of water in areas draining geothermal discharges showed a distinct trend toward enrichment of (18)O compared with meteoric waters, whereas much of the runoff from abandoned mines indicated a stable isotopic pattern more consistent with local meteoric water.  相似文献

Globally, accelerated urbanization has wrapped more and more mountain landscapes into metropolitan areas as water sources or residential and recreational spaces. Such mountain landscapes are usually governed by multiple agencies, which means that its sustainable development largely depends on the effectiveness of the collective actions among these agencies. This paper examines the case of the Santa Monica Mountains in California, the United States by analyzing relevant oral histories, acts and ordinances, study reports, planning documents, and GIS data to depict the whole picture of the evolution of its cooperative planning and management. It is found that the polycentric governance in the Santa Monica Mountains emerged as a response to the deterioration of natural resource and the increasing outdoor recreation needs against the backdrop of urbanization. The California State government developed coastal zone protection guidelines and established conservancies, while the federal government cooperated with local governments and communities by forming a national recreation area. These methods helped the governing agencies tactically cope with the real estate development, changing political climate, shrinking financial allocation, rising land prices, and conceptual shifts in environmental protection. This polycentric governance mode was also applied to other mountain areas in the vicinity to form a regionalscale resilient landscape. The authors argue that the case of the Santa Monica Mountains reveals how the polycentric governance works on strengthening landscape resilience, which shows an important reference for contemporary China.  相似文献

Polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides were analysed in sediments collected during the summer monsoon period (rainy season) in order to assess the contamination of Manila Bay. Results were compared with previous determinations made during the winter monsoon period (dry season) in order to evaluate seasonal fluctuation of contaminant levels in the Bay. In both seasons, PCBs were present in concentrations higher than chlorinated pesticides. In the rainy season the median concentration of ΣPCB was 0.256 ng g?1 dry weight (range 0.08–1.173 ng g?1), followed by ΣDDT with 0.229 ng g?1 dry weight (range 0.133–0.926 ng g?1) and Σchlordane with 0.049 ng g?1 dry weight (range 0.024–0.175 ng g?1). Concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbons in sediments were relatively low and, when concentrations determined in the rainy season and in the dry season were compared, in general, they did not show seasonal fluctuation with the exception of DDTs. Round the year, levels of these toxic, persistent and bioaccumulative contaminants in Manila Bay sediments were below threshold effect levels for marine biota.  相似文献

Surface sediment samples from the Guba Penchenga and adjacent areas: Varangerfjord, Guba Malaya Volokovaya and Guba Bol'shaya Volokovaya (south-western Barents Sea) collected in March-April 1997 were analysed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), chlorinated pesticides: p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD, alpha- and gamma-HCH, and hexachlorobenzene (HCB). Mean summation operator PAH (sum of the two- to six-ring PAHs) concentration in sediments from the Guba Pechenga (1481 ng/g dry wt.) was significantly higher than in sediments from adjacent areas (252 ng/g dry wt.), where PAH contamination levels were similar to reported for unpolluted sediments of the northern Norway fjords and open parts of the Barents Sea. Differences between HCB levels as well as summation operator HCH (sum of alpha- and gamma-HCH) levels found in Guba Pechenga sediments and adjacent area sediments were not significant. Concentrations of these contaminants varied in ranges 0.28-1.76 and 0.05-0.68 ng/g dry wt., respectively, and were consistent with literature data on PAH levels in sediments from the northern Norway harbours, Kola Bay (Russia) and south-eastern part of the Barents Sea. Average total DDT concentration in Guba Pechenga sediments (10.5 ng/g dry wt.) was one and 2-3 orders higher than those found in sediments from the Pechora Sea and from the seas of eastern Arctic, respectively, however, it was comparable with DDT levels reported for harbours of northern Norway and Kola Bay. Significant difference between total DDT levels in Guba Pechenga and in the adjacent areas (mean 1.8 ng/g) was found. Among compounds of DDT family, p,p'-DDT isomer prevailed in all sediment samples indicating a possible local 'fresh' DDT source. Mean summation operator PCB (sum of PCB-28, 31, 52, 101, 118, 105, 153, 138, 156, 180, 209) concentration in the Guba Pechenga sediments (12.8 ng/g dry wt.) was significantly higher than in sediments of adjacent areas (2.1 ng/g dry wt.), but it was lower in comparison with summation operator PCB levels reported for the northern Norway harbours and Kola Bay sediments. The highest levels of contaminants were found in sediments collected close to the Liinakhamari harbour. The origin of both PAHs and OCs in the Guba Pechenga sediments is a combination of local sources and long-range transport from lower latitudes.  相似文献

Persistent organochlorine compounds and mercury (Hg) have been detected in numerous coastal organisms of the Aleutian archipelago of Alaska, yet sources of these contaminants are unclear. We collected glaucous-winged gulls, northern fulmars, and tufted puffins along a natural longitudinal gradient across the western and central Aleutian Islands (Buldir, Kiska, Amchitka, Adak), and an additional 8 seabird species representing different foraging and migratory guilds from Buldir Island to evaluate: 1) point source input from former military installations, 2) westward increases in contaminant concentrations suggestive of distant source input, and 3) effects of trophic status (delta15N) and carbon source (delta13C) on contaminant accumulation. Concentrations of Sigma polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and most chlorinated pesticides in glaucous-winged gulls consistently exhibited a 'U'-shaped pattern of high levels at Buldir and the east side of Adak and low levels at Kiska and Amchitka. In contrast, concentrations of Sigma PCBs and chlorinated pesticides in northern fulmars and tufted puffins did not differ among islands. Hg concentrations increased westward in glaucous-winged gulls and were highest in northern fulmars from Buldir. Among species collected only at Buldir, Hg was notably elevated in pelagic cormorants, and relatively high Sigma PCBs were detected in black-legged kittiwakes. Concentrations of Sigma PCBs, dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p' DDE), and Hg were positively correlated with delta15N across all seabird species, indicating biomagnification across trophic levels. The east side of Adak Island (a former military installation) was a likely point source of Sigma PCBs and p,p' DDE, particularly in glaucous-winged gulls. In contrast, elevated levels of these contaminants and Hg, along with PCB congener and chlorinated pesticide compositional patterns detected at Buldir Island indicated exposure from distant sources influenced by a combination of atmospheric-oceanic processes and the migratory movements of seabirds.  相似文献

Soil PCB contamination has been delineated at 18 of 21 Distant Early Warning Line (DEW-line) stations being cleaned up by the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND). As a result, detailed surface soil delineation data has been reported for contamination exceeding 1 microg/g (dw total Aroclor), which is the remedial criteria for PCB contaminated soil under the DEW-line cleanup project. The results of this delineation work has allowed us to estimate the mass of PCB contained in surface soil at these sites and to quantify the DEW-line as a source of PCBs to both local and Arctic wide contamination. Our analysis of DEW-line cleanup delineation reports suggests that pre-cleanup surface soils (top 10 cm) with over 1 microg/g PCB constituted a source of PCBs that ranged from 0.8 to 43 kg with a mean of 18 kg. The total mass of PCB at all 18 sites was 119 kg. Previous studies have described a "halo-effect" that surrounds DEW-line sites, whereby PCB signatures in soil and plants up to 10 km from source areas were attributed to the local source. At Cambridge Bay (CAM-M), Nunavut, our inventory of PCB sources and redistribution suggests that up to 3.4 kg of PCB were exported from the site to the surrounding tundra prior to cleanup. The primary mechanism of transportation appears to be wind borne particulate. Potential vapour phase emissions of PCB from contaminated soil at DEW-line sites appears to have been negligible.  相似文献

Recent laboratory studies with a marine sediment from a tidal mudflat in San Francisco Bay demonstrated that a low dose of activated carbon enhances the sequestration of PCBs and PAHs under well-mixed conditions. Here we compare activated carbon treatment for a freshwater sediment from a rural site, using PCB-contaminated sediment from Lake Hartwell, SC. An activated carbon dose of 2% of the dry sediment mass lowered total aqueous PCB concentrations by more than 95% after 1 month of treatment and more than 98% after 6 months. Aqueous PCB concentrations remained below detection limits following 18 months of sediment-carbon contact in slowly mixed systems. Uptake of PCBs into semipermeable membrane devices was reduced by 78%, 91% and 97% over 1, 6 and 18 months, respectively. These tests show that PCB sequestration with activated carbon improves with contact time and is not diminished by prolonged mixing with sediment. Desorption studies confirmed the sequestration, in which 74% of the total PCB mass could be desorbed from untreated Lake Hartwell sediment within 30 days as compared to only 7% after activated carbon treatment for 6 months. We compare these observations with marine sediment from San Francisco Bay and propose a conceptual model to rationalize how sediment properties relate to the reduction in aqueous PCB concentrations during activated carbon treatment.  相似文献

Excess nutrients and agrochemicals from non-point sources contribute to water quality impairment in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and their loading rates are related to land use, agricultural practices, hydrology, and pollutant fate and transport processes. In this study, monthly baseflow stream samples from 15 agricultural subwatersheds of the Choptank River in Maryland USA (2005 to 2007) were characterized for nutrients, herbicides, and herbicide transformation products. High-resolution digital maps of land use and forested wetlands were derived from remote sensing imagery. Examination of landscape metrics and water quality data, partitioned according to hydrogeomorphic class, provided insight into the fate, delivery, and transport mechanisms associated with agricultural pollutants. Mean Nitrate-N concentrations (4.9 mg/L) were correlated positively with percent agriculture (R2 = 0.56) and negatively with percent forest (R2 = 0.60). Concentrations were greater (p = 0.0001) in the well-drained upland (WDU) hydrogeomorphic region than in poorly drained upland (PDU), reflecting increased denitrification and reduced agricultural land use intensity in the PDU landscape due to the prevalence of hydric soils. Atrazine and metolachlor concentrations (mean 0.29 μg/L and 0.19 μg/L) were also greater (p = 0.0001) in WDU subwatersheds than in PDU subwatersheds. Springtime herbicide concentrations exhibited a strong, positive correlation (R2 = 0.90) with percent forest in the WDU subwatersheds but not in the PDU subwatersheds. In addition, forested riparian stream buffers in the WDU were more prevalent than in the PDU where forested patches are typically not located near streams, suggesting an alternative delivery mechanism whereby volatilized herbicides are captured by the riparian forest canopy and subsequently washed off during rainfall. Orthophosphate, CIAT (6-chloro-N-(1-methylethyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine), CEAT (6-chloro-N-ethyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine), and MESA (2-[(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl) (2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)amino]-2-oxoethanesulfonic acid) were also analyzed. These findings will assist efforts in targeting implementation of conservation practices to the most environmentally-critical areas within watersheds to achieve water quality improvements in a cost-effective manner.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Different PCB congeners and different mixtures of congeners have been demonstrated to have different biological actions. More complete characterization of congener profiles in exposure sources may assist in predicting health outcomes. METHODS: Thirty-six (36) polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were measured by gas chromatography isotope-dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) in 314 serum samples from Native Americans in Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota. Five dietary groups were established based on the quantity and species of fish consumed and the waters from which the fish were caught. Multivariate statistical methods were able to resolve gender and dietary differences in PCB homologue and PCB congener patterns. RESULTS: Females had higher proportions of lower chlorinated homologues, including a consistently higher proportion of pentaCB 118. The relative presence of the very labile and volatile PCB 18, above 1% of the total PCB in females from the minimal fish consumption and "other" groups, suggests possible exposure to PCBs in the atmosphere. The dietary group consuming predatory fishes from Lakes Michigan and Superior had the highest serum concentrations of total PCB (mean of 3.1 ng/ml) and the most distinct congener profile. The two dietary groups least dependent on fishing or fishing mostly from inland lakes (non-Great Lakes) had the lowest total PCB concentrations, both with means of 1.4 ng/ml. CONCLUSIONS: These serum PCB concentrations were less than those found in earlier studies of fish consumers in the Great Lakes region and may reflect the decrease in PCBs in these lakes.  相似文献

Monitoring of environmental contaminants in Canadian Arctic polar bears (Ursus maritimus) typically has used superficial adipose tissue samples collected as part of controlled native subsistence hunts. However, little attention has been paid to the compositional difference in contaminants that may exist among the major adipose depots that are routinely collected. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the profiles and concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminants (CHCs), including major polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and organochlorine (OC) pesticides and metabolites, in six major adipose depots (i.e. superficial, inter-muscular and intra-abdominal regions) obtained from adult male polar bears in the vicinity of Resolute Bay, Canadian high Arctic. Concentrations and congener patterns of PCBs (20 congeners) and OCs (14 compounds; chlordanes and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes and metabolites, chlorinated benzenes, hexachlorocyclohexane isomers, octachlorostyrene and dieldrin) were found to be relatively uniform throughout the adipose tissue of male polar bears. The only exception was the inter-muscular adipose depot from the cervical region, which was characterized, compared to other major depots routinely sampled, by lower proportions of higher-chlorinated and recalcitrant congeners such as CB170/190, 180, 194 and 206, and higher contribution of the lower-chlorinated PCBs, CB47, 74 and 99. No difference in the OC makeup and concentrations was found among the adipose depots investigated. In view of this, we conclude that the determination of CHCs in adipose tissue of polar bears from any major depots, with the potential exception of the fat under the neck muscles, would give a representative picture of the overall CHC composition and concentrations in polar bear fat for purpose of trend monitoring.  相似文献

Monitoring programs for urban runoff have not been assessed for effectiveness or efficiency in estimating mass emissions. In order to determine appropriate designs for stormwater, total suspended solids (TSS) and flow information from the Santa Ana River was collected nearly every 15 min for every storm of the 1998 water year. All samples were used to calculate the "true load" and then three within-storm sampling designs (flow-interval, time-interval, and simple random) and five among-storm sampling designs (stratified by size, stratified by season, simple random, simple random of medium and large storms, and the first m storms of the season) were simulated. Using these designs, we evaluated three estimators for storm mass emissions (mean, volume-weighted, and ratio) and three estimators for annual mass emissions (median, ratio, and regular). Designs and estimators were evaluated with respect to accuracy and precision. The optimal strategy was used to determine the appropriate number of storms to sample annually based upon confidence interval width for estimates of annual mass emissions and concentration. The amount of detectable trend in mass emissions and concentration was determined for sample sizes 3 and 7. Single storms were most efficiently characterized (small bias and standard error) by taking 12 samples following a flow-interval schedule and using a volume-weighted estimator of mass emissions. The ratio estimator, when coupled with the simple random sample of medium and large storms within a season, most accurately estimated concentration and mass emissions; and had low bias over all of the designs. Sampling seven storms is the most efficient method for attaining small confidence interval width for annual concentration. Sampling three storms per year allows a 20% trend to be detected in mass emissions or concentration over five years. These results are decreased by 10% by sampling seven storms per year.  相似文献

Thirty three PCB congeners were analyzed in three size classes of seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), from a semi-intensive fish farm, in food and in abiotic compartment. Water and suspended particulated matter (SPM) showed higher concentrations of lower chlorinated PCBs, whereas fish tissues and food showed higher concentrations of CB153 and CB138. In order to examine the influence of different inputs to seabass contamination, bioaccumulation factors (BAF), biota-suspended particulate matter bioaccumulation factors (BSMAF) and biomagnification factors (BMF) were calculated. In general, the log BAF and log BSMAF showed good correlations with log K(ow), for congeners with log K(ow)>6.1. In three fish size classes, PCB congeners with log K(ow)<6.1 were found at concentrations higher than what was expected based on the BAF calculated for the more hydrophobic congeners, suggesting a different contribution of sources. The application of a mass balance model for accumulation of some congeners in seabass estimated concentrations in fish 3- to 38-fold higher than the measured values, probably by overestimating gill absorption. The model was applied with other scenarios in order to maximize uptake from food, which may have a significant influence in accumulation, and not only from diet pellets. Its contribution to fish contamination for highly chlorinated PCBs may reach a maximum of 54-64%, and for lower chlorinated PCBs its contribution is lower than 20%. In this work it was proved that to reduce fish contamination the quality of the water should be controlled.  相似文献
