Composites (50 wt% fiber) of jute fiber reinforced polyvinyl chloride (PVC) matrix and E-glass fiber reinforced PVC matrix were prepared by compression molding. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength (TS), tensile modulus (TM), bending strength (BS), bending modulus (BM) and impact strength (IS) of both types of composites was evaluated and compared. Values of TS, TM, BS, BM and IS of jute fiber/PVC composites were found to be 45 MPa, 802 MPa, 46 MPa, 850 MPa and 24 kJ/m2, respectively. It was observed that TS, TM, BS, BM and IS of E-glass fiber/PVC composites were found to increase by 44, 80, 47, 92 and 37.5%, respectively. Thermal properties of the composites were also carried out, which revealed that thermal stability of E-glass fiber/PVC system was higher. The interfacial adhesion between the fibers (jute and E-glass) and matrix was studied by means of critical fiber length and interfacial shear strength that were measured by single fiber fragmentation test. Fracture sides after flexural testing of both types of the composites were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy.  相似文献

Jute fabrics/gelatin biocomposites were fabricated using compression molding. The fiber content in the composite varied from 20–60 wt%. Composites were subjected to mechanical, thermal, water uptake and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis. Composite contained 50 wt% jute showed the best mechanical properties. Tensile strength, tensile modulus, bending strength, bending modulus and impact strength of the 50% jute content composites were found to be 85 MPa, 1.25 GPa, 140 MPa and 9 GPa and 9.5 kJ/m2, respectively. Water uptake properties at room temperature were evaluated and found that the composites had lower water uptake compared to virgin matrix.  相似文献

Jute fabrics such as reinforced polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), and a mixture of PVC and PP matrices-based composites (50 wt% fiber) were prepared by compression molding. Tensile strength (TS), bending strength (BS), tensile modulus (TM), and vbending modulus (BM) of jute fabrics' reinforced PVC composite (50 wt% fiber) were found to be 45 MPa, 52 MPa, 0.8 GPa, and 1.1 GPa, respectively. The effect of incorporation of PP on the mechanical properties of jute fabrics' reinforced PVC composites was studied. It was found that the mixture of 60% PP and 40% PVC matrices based composite showed the best performance. TS, BS, TM, and BM for this composite were found to be 65 MPa, 70 MPa, 1.42 GPa, and 1.8 GPa, respectively. Degradation tests of the composites for up to six months were performed in a soil medium. Thermo-mechanical properties of the composites were also studied.  相似文献

Jute fabric-reinforced poly(caprolactone) biocomposites (30–70% jute) were fabricated by compression molding. Tensile strength, tensile modulus, bending strength, bending modulus and impact strength of the non-irradiated composites (50% jute) were found to be 65 MPa, 0.75 GPa, 75 MPa, 4.2 GPa and 6.8 kJ/m2, respectively. The composites were irradiated with gamma radiation at different doses (50–1000 krad) at a dose rate of 232 krad/hr and mechanical properties were investigated. The irradiated composites containing 50% jute showed improved physico-mechanical properties. The degradation properties of the composites were observed. The morphology was evaluated by scanning electron microscope.  相似文献

There is a growing interest in the use of composite materials. Silk fiber/gelatin biocomposites were fabricated using compression molding. The fiber content in the composite varied from 10–30 wt%. Composite containing 30 wt% silk showed the best mechanical properties. Tensile strength, tensile modulus, bending strength, bending modulus and impact strength, hardness of the 30% silk content composites were found 54 MPa, 0.95 GPa, 75 MPa and 0.43 GPa and 5.4 kJ/m2, 95.5 Shore A, respectively. Water uptake properties at room temperature, accelerated weathering aging, irradiation, thermomechanical analysis, and degradation in soil were carried out in this experiment.  相似文献

Calcium alginate fibers were prepared from sodium alginate by extruding aqueous sodium alginate solution (4% by weight) into a calcium chloride (2% by weight) bath. Water uptake and mechanical properties of the calcium alginate fiber were investigated. Water uptake tests of calcium alginate showed that it absorbed 50% of water within a minute and indicated strong hydrophilic nature. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based calcium alginate fiber reinforced unidirectional composites (10% fiber by weight) were fabricated by compression molding. Tensile strength (TS), tensile modulus (TM), bending strength (BS), bending modulus (BM) and impact strength (IS) of the PVA matrix and the composite were evaluated. TS, BS, TM, and BM of the PVA matrix were found 10, 18, 320 and 532 MPa, respectively. TS and BS of the PVA based composite were found to be 16 and 27 MPa, respectively, which were 60 and 50% higher than that of the PVA matrix. TM and BM of the composite were found to be 620 and 1056 MPa, respectively, which were improved by 94 and 98% over the matrix material. Degradation tests of the composites were performed for up to 2 months in soil medium and found that composites lost almost 50% of its original mechanical properties. The interfacial properties of the composite were also investigated by using the single fiber fragmentation test (SFFT).  相似文献

Jute fabric (hessian cloth) reinforced low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) composites (40 wt%) and solid natural rubber-(NR) based composites (40 wt%) were fabricated by compression molding. Tensile strength (TS), tensile modulus (TM) and percentage elongation at break (Eb) of jute/LLDPE composites were found to be 29, 680 MPa and 20%, and for jute/NR-based composites were also found to be 15, 122 MPa and 94%, respectively. Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the jute/LLDPE and jute/NR systems was investigated by using the single fiber fragmentation test (SFFT). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and aqueous degradation tests were also performed.  相似文献

The processing of 3D carbon fiber reinforced SiCN ceramic matrix composites prepared by polymer impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP) route was improved, and factors that determined the mechanical performance of the resulting composites were discussed. 3D Cf/SiCN composites with a relative density of ∼81% and uniform microstructure were obtained after 6 PIP cycles. The optimum bending strength, Young's modulus and fracture toughness of the composites were 75.2 MPa, 66.3 GPa and 1.65 MPa m1/2, respectively. The residual strength retention rate of the as-pyrolyzed composites was 93.3% after thermal shock test at ΔT = 780 °C. It further degraded to 14.6% when the thermal shock temperature difference reached to 1180 °C. The bending strength of the composites was 35.6 MPa after annealing at 1000 °C in static air. The deterioration of the bending strength should be attributed to the strength degradation of carbon fibers and decomposition of interfacial structure.  相似文献

Hessian cloth (jute fabrics) reinforced poly(propylene) (PP) composites (45 wt% fiber) were prepared by compression molding and the mechanical properties were evaluated. Jute fabrics and PP sheets were treated with UV radiation at different intensities and then composites were fabricated. It was found that mechanical properties of the irradiated jute and irradiated PP-based composites were found to increase significantly compared to that of the untreated counterparts. Irradiated jute fabrics were also treated with aqueous starch solution (1–5%, w/w) for 2–10 min. Composites made of 3% starch-treated jute fabrics (5 min soaking time) and irradiated PP showed the best mechanical properties. Tensile strength, bending strength, tensile modulus, bending modulus and impact strength of the composites were found to improve 31, 41, 42, 46 and 84% higher over untreated composites. Water uptake, thermal degradation and dielectric properties of the resulting composites were also performed.  相似文献

The present study investigates the thermal, mechanical and microscopic properties of polyphenylene sulphide/carbon fiber (PPS/CF) composites by incremental number of fiber layers. The composites were prepared by hand lay-up technique followed by compression molding. A superior matrix-reinforcement adhesion was attained without the use of coupling agent and mechanical stability of the composites improved with increasing fiber layers. Transverse rupture strength and bending modulus were improved by 59.84 and 125.21 %, respectively, without loss in toughness. Impact strength and hardness values were enhanced while storage modulus, loss modulus and damping factor were dropped by increases in fiber layers. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated a gradual rise in thermal stability (16.84 %) of the composite as compared to pure matrix. Surface morphology and crack propagation were studied by optical microscopy. It was found that crack was propagated in a linear plane by applying load. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) illustrated steady alignment of fibers and uniform distribution of the matrix around reinforcement. Based on the obtained results, fiber layers showed great potential for enhancement of thermal and mechanical properties of the composites.  相似文献

Paper mill sludge (PMS) is a waste material from pulping. In this article it was used to replace part of a wood fiber (WF) filler to reinforce high‐density polyethylene (HDPE). The properties of the PMS/WF/HDPE composites were investigated. When half of WF was replaced with PMS, the bending strength and modulus of WF/HDPE composites decreased by 16.08% and 29.91%, respectively, but their impact strength increased by 11.31%. Dynamic mechanical analysis demonstrated that with PMS addition, the storage modulus decreased and the loss tangent increased. Although the flexural properties of the PMS/WF/HDPE composites decreased compared to WF/HDPE composite, they still had satisfactorily high strengths. The 30:30:36 PMS/WF/HDPE composite presented bending and impact strengths of 61.00 MPa and 12.11 kJ m−2, respectively. The 50:20:26 PMS/WF/HDPE composite presented bending and impact strengths of 55.02 MPa and 10.37 kJ m−2, respectively. Rheological test proved that substituting part of WF with PMS would not affectmanufacture processing. This study indicated that paper mill sludge could be used in wood plastic composites, which would reduce pollution from paper manufacturing. POLYM. Two highly functionalized resins were synthesized by the phase transfer reaction of indene with propargyl bromide or allyl chloride in the presence of strong base. The resins consisted of a mixture of tri- and tetrafunctional indenes with 60–80% of the product being tetrafunctional. The allylated (AL) and propargylated (PL) indene resins were thermally cured without added catalysts. Both resins exhibited a broad, highly exothermic cure with a peak energy at 320°C for AL resin and 282°C for PL resin. Thermal degradation of cured AL resin was found to begin at approximately 400°C with a carbon yield of 20% of its initial weight at 1000°C. Carbon yields for cured PL resin were excellent, with 68% retention of weight at 1000°C. Unidirectional, carbon fiber composites were fabricated from the substituted indene resins. AL–carbon fiber composites gave modulus values of 126 GPa and strength values of 967 MPa, while PL–carbon fiber composites gave modulus values of 116 GPa and strength values of 935 MPa in three-point bending tests. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Jute (Hessian cloth) reinforced polymer composites were prepared with a mixture of 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and aliphatic urethane diacrylate oligomer (EB-204), and then cured under gamma radiation. Thick pure polymer films (2 mm thickness) were prepared by using the same monomer and oligomer at different weight ratios, and 500 krad of total gamma radiation dose at 600 krad/hr was selected for the curing of all composites. Total radiation dose, jute content, and monomer concentration were optimized with the extent of mechanical properties. Among all resulting composites, the composite of 38% jute content at monomer:oligomer = 50:50 (w/w) ratios showed the better mechanical properties, such as 108% increase in tensile strength (TS), 58% increase in bending strength (BS), 138% increase in tensile modulus (TM), and 211% increase in bending modulus (BM) relative to pure polymer film. The gel content values were also found to increase with the increase of jute content in the composite. But the elongation at break (Eb) for both tensile and bending was found to decrease with increasing jute content. The best mechanical properties were obtained when jute fibers were pre-irradiated with UV radiation, such as 150% increase in TS, 90% increase in BS relative to polymer film, 19% increase in TS, and 15% increase in BS relative to untreated jute-based composites. A water uptake behavior investigation of the resulting composites was also performed and composites based on UV-treated jute showed the minimum water uptake value.  相似文献

Industrial hemp fibers were treated with a 5 wt % NaOH, 2 wt % Na2SO3 solution at 120°C for 60 min to remove noncellulosic fiber components. Analysis of fibers by lignin analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), zeta potential, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXRD) and differential thermal/thermogravimetric analysis (DTA/TGA), supported that alkali treatment had (i) removed lignin, (ii) separated fibers from their fiber bundles, (iii) exposed cellulose hydroxyl groups, (iv) made the fiber surface cleaner, and (v) enhanced thermal stability of the fibers by increasing cellulose crystallinity through better packing of cellulose chains. Untreated and alkali treated short (random and aligned) and long (aligned) hemp fiber/epoxy composites were produced with fiber contents between 40 and 65 wt %. Although alkali treatment generally improved composite strength, better strength at high fiber contents for long fiber composites was achieved with untreated fiber, which appeared to be due to less fiber/fiber contact between alkali treated fibers. Composites with 65 wt % untreated, long aligned fiber were the strongest with a tensile strength (TS) of 165 MPa, Young's modulus (YM) of 17 GPa, flexural strength of 180 MPa, flexural modulus of 9 GPa, impact energy (IE) of 14.5 kJ/m2, and fracture toughness (KIc) of 5 MPa m1/2. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A facile route was adopted to blend the matrix. The PMMA/PEG blend was reinforced with three types of nanofillers, i.e., pristine MWCNT (P-CNT), amine functionalized MWCNT (PDA-EA-CNT) and nanobifiller i.e. nanodiamond functional MWCNT (PDA-EA-CNT-ND) to yield three different types of nanocomposites i.e. PMMA/PEG/P-CNT, PMMA/PEG/PDA-EA-CNT and PMMA/PEG/PDA-EA-CNT-ND. These nanocomposites were reinforced with nanofiller loading (1 wt. %, 3 wt. %, 5 wt. %, 10 wt. %, 30 wt. % and 50 wt. %) by solution casting method. Structure of composite and nanofillers was confirmed by FTIR. FESEM imaging revealed that nanocomposites have micro porous morphology. At high magnification, distribution of functionalized CNT/ND appears to be protruding out of the polymeric matrix. The TGA result suggests that the thermal stability of the nanocomposites was enhanced in comparison to PMMA due to grafting of filler molecules with PMMA/PEG macromolecules. The DTG results showed that the bifiller nanocomposites (PMMA/PEG/PDA-EA-CNT-ND) exhibited improved thermal stability with Tmax (431°C) as compared to P-CNT and amine functionalized CNT (PMMA/PEG/PDA-EA-CNT) with Tmax of 395°C and 418°C respectively. XRD results showed fine interaction between filler and the polymeric matrix. As the filler loading was increased the composites showed pronounced XRD peak at 25.9°, corresponding to (002) reflection of nanotubes. Significant improvement in the mechanical properties of composites was recorded with the reinforcement of fillers as compared to the neat matrix. The most significant improvement in tensile strength and elastic modulus was observed for the bifiller nanocomposites with 5 wt. % PDA-EA-CNT-ND. They showed a tensile strength and elastic modulus of 29.9 MPa and 1474.31 MPa respectively as compared to amine functionalized CNT with tensile strength (25.7) and elastic modulus (1466.99 MPa)and P-CNT with tensile strength(25 MPa) and elastic modulus (1155.75 MPa).  相似文献

The Nextel? 440 fiber reinforced nitride matrix (N440/Nitride) composites were fabricated by precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) route. The results demonstrated that the original N440 fiber had a phase composition of amorphous SiO2 and γ-Al2O3. Its single filament tensile strength was 3.03 GPa (at room temperature), while it dropped to 72.6% and 35.1% at 1200 °C and 1400 °C, respectively. The phase content of N440/Ntride composites was mainly γ-Al2O3 and amorphous BN, as well as mullite phase (formed at > 1100 °C). The composites owned a flexural strength up to 76.0 MPa at room temperature. The stair-stepping decrease in the load-displacement curve and fiber pull-outs in the fracture surface indicated a good fiber/matrix interface and toughness. By heating at 1400 °C, the composites still possessed 67.4% of original bending strength. It was found that the high temperatures caused strong fiber-matrix bonding and severe fiber degradation. The specific heat, CTE and thermal conductivity of the composites were 0.325–0.586 J g?1 K?1, (3.2–4.0) × 10?6 K?1 and 0.78–3.47 W m?1 K?1, respectively. The composites possessed a dielectric constant of 4.25–4.35 and loss tangent of 0.004–0.01 at 8–12 GHz. The good overall performances enabled the N440/Nitride composites advanced high-temperature wave-transparent applications.  相似文献

Wheat straw fiber‐polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared to investigate the effects of wheat straw fiber content (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 wt %), fiber size (9, 28, and 35 mesh), and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) concentration (1, 2, 5, and 10 wt %) on the static and dynamic mechanical properties of the wheat straw fiber‐PP composites in this study. The tensile modulus and strength of the composites increased linearly with increasing wheat straw fiber content up to 40%, whereas the elongation at break decreased dramatically to 3.78%. Compared with the composites made of the longer wheat straw fiber, the composites made of the fines (>35 mesh) had a slightly higher tensile strength of 31.2 MPa and tensile elongation of 5.39% at break. With increasing MAPP concentration, the composites showed an increase in tensile strength, and the highest tensile strength of 34.0 MPa occurred when the MAPP concentration reached 10 wt %. As wheat straw fiber content increased from 0 to 40%, the flexural modulus of the composites increased gradually from 1335 to 3437 MPa. The MAPP concentration and wheat straw fiber size distribution had no appreciable effect on the static flexural modulus of the composites. The storage flexural modulus of the composites increased with increasing wheat straw fiber content. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation on the fracture surface of the composites indicated that a high wheat straw fiber content (>30 wt %) resulted in fiber agglomeration and a reduction in interfacial bonding strength. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BN-nanoparticle-containing SiC-matrix-based composites comprising SiC fibers and lacking a fiber/matrix interface (SiC/BN + SiC composites) were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1800°C for 10 min under 50 MPa in Ar. The content of added BN nanoparticles was varied from 0 to 50 vol.%. The mechanical properties of the SiC/BN + SiC composites were investigated thoroughly. The SiC/BN + SiC composites with a BN nanoparticle content of 50 vol.%, which had a bulk density of 2.73 g/cm3 and an open porosity of 5.8%, exhibited quasiductile fracture behavior, as indicated by a short nonlinear region and significantly shorter fiber pullouts owing to the relatively high modulus. The composites also exhibited high strength as well as bending, proportional limit stress, and ultimate tensile strength values of 496 ± 13, 251 ± 30, and 301 MPa ± 56 MPa, respectively, under ambient conditions. The SiC fibers with contents of BN nanoparticles above 30 vol.% were not severely damaged during SPS and adhered to the matrix to form a relatively weak fiber/matrix interface.  相似文献
