The challenging conditions to China’s steel industry currently are:insufficiency of natural resources, namely iron ore and coking coal,overcapacity of existing facilities,overconsumption of energy and heavy impact on global environment.The healthy development of China’s steel industry depends on how we could deal with these challenges.     

Enhancing mergers and acquisition quality,accelerating technological innovation and achieving the second leap of China’s steel industry

Over the past 10 years,China’s steel industry has made a substantial development in terms of scale,and has finally become a steel giant in the world.In the upcoming 10 years,fundamental changes will be made with the economic growth in China.Against this background,China’s steel industry will shift from a rapid development to a slow but sound development.In order to fulfill the second leap of China’s steel industry,based on its current developing status and characteristics,and from the perspective of both national and corporate development,mergers and acquisition are both effective ways to raise the quality of the existing stock of asset in the steel industry,while technological innovation is the solid foundation for its second leap.

Suggestions have been put forward speeding up the development of high-level tool steel and mold steel in China based on the analysis of products and development status of special steel home and abroad.Feasibility and necessity to produce high-level tool steel and mold steel by applying the spray forming method in future have been put forward.

Development of Water Quality Indexes to Identify Pollutants in Vietnam’s Surface Water

This study presents the first water quality indexes developed to evaluate surface water in Vietnam. The basic water quality index (WQIB) can be effectively used to evaluate the spatial and temporal variations of surface water quality as well as to identify water pollutants. The overall water quality index (WQIO) can provide additional information, particularly on toxic substances contributing to water pollution. The water quality indexes developed for this paper were applied to the national surface-water quality monitoring data taken from 1999 to 2007. Water pollutants were classified into three subcategories: organic and nutrients, particulates, and bacteria. Surface water in northern and central Vietnam was poor in quality and contained organic matter, nutrients, and bacteria. Water in the southern part was mainly polluted by bacteria. Trend analysis results reveal a deterioration in water quality in those provinces under pressure from rapid population growth, urbanization, and industrialization. Vietnam has established an official policy to ensure comprehensive nationwide water quality monitoring by 2020. The implementation of water quality indexes may provide the guiding data for sustainable water-resources management in Vietnam.
