The effect of geometry change of the bearing surfaces owing to wear on the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) of metal-on-metal (MOM) hip bearings has been investigated theoretically in the present study. A particular MOM Metasul bearing (Zimmer GmbH) was considered, and was tested in a hip simulator using diluted bovine serum. The geometry of the worn bearing surface was measured using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and was modelled theoretically on the assumption of spherical geometries determined from the maximum linear wear depth and the angle of the worn region. Both the CMM measurement and the theoretical calculation were directly incorporated into the elastohydrodynamic lubrication analysis. It was found that the geometry of the original machined bearing surfaces, particularly of the femoral head with its out-of-roundness, could lead to a large reduction in the predicted lubricant film thickness and an increase in pressure. However, these non-spherical deviations can be expected to be smoothed out quickly during the initial running-in period. For a given worn bearing surface, the predicted lubricant film thickness and pressure distribution, based on CMM measurement, were found to be in good overall agreement with those obtained with the theoretical model based on the maximum linear wear depth and the angle of the worn region. The gradual increase in linear wear during the running-in period resulted in an improvement in the conformity and consequently an increase in the predicted lubricant film thickness and a decrease in the pressure. For the Metasul bearing tested in an AMTI hip simulator, a maximum total linear wear depth of approximately 13 microm was measured after 1 million cycles and remained unchanged up to 5 million cycles. This resulted in a threefold increase in the predicted average lubricant film thickness. Consequently, it was possible for the Metasul bearing to achieve a fluid film lubrication regime during this period, and this was consistent with the minimal wear observed between 1 and 5 million cycles. However, under adverse in vivo conditions associated with start-up and stopping and depleted lubrication, wear of the bearing surfaces can still occur. An increase in the wear depth beyond a certain limit was shown to lead to the constriction of the lubricant film around the edge of the contact conjunction and consequently to a decrease in the lubricant film thickness. Continuous cycles of a running-in wear period followed by a steady state wear period may be inevitable in MOM hip implants. This highlights the importance of minimizing the wear in these devices during the initial running-in period, particularly from design and manufacturing points of view.  相似文献

A theoretical model is developed to study the potential use of laser surface texturing (LST) in the form of spherical micro-dimples for soft elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication (SEHL). The model consists of mutual smooth elastomeric and LST rigid surfaces moving relatively to each other in the presence of viscous lubricant. The pressure distribution in the fluid film and the elastic deformations of the elastomer are obtained from a simultaneous solution of the Reynolds equation and the equation of elasticity for the elastomer. An extensive parametric investigation is performed to identify the main important parameters of the problem, which are the aspect ratio and area density of the dimples. The parametric analysis provides optimum parameters of the surface texturing and shows that LST effectively increases load capacity and reduces friction in SEHL.  相似文献

The behaviour of surface texturing based on shallow micro-dents was observed within mixed lubricated non-conformal contacts and compared with results obtained under thin film elastohydrodynamic conditions. Thin film colorimetric interferometry was used to observe the changes in lubrication film thickness. It was found that lubricant emitted by micro-dents could effectively lift off the real roughness features that provided an increase in average but also the local minimum film thicknesses. On the contrary to smooth contact conditions no film thickness reduction is obvious either downstream or upstream the micro-dent. The possible beneficial effect of surface texturing on mixed lubricated contact was checked through the qualitative wear test. It confirmed that an array of shallow micro-dents reduced asperity interactions of rubbing surfaces. Moreover, the effect of micro-dents on rolling contact fatigue was also considered in this study. It has been shown that individual dents would have to be much deeper compared to those used in surface texturing experiments to cause reduction in contact fatigue life. It can be suggested from the obtained results that properly designed surface texturing could help to increase the separation of rubbing surfaces under mixed lubrication conditions.  相似文献

A full fluid ball-in-socket elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) analysis of an artificial hip joint made of a metallic femoral head and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular cup was considered. Since artificial hips operate in a mixed lubrication mode, wear occurs and wear particles lead to reduced hip lifetimes. This study involves simulating these particles within the lubrication regime. Hip deformation was compared to models employing finite element analysis and the spherical fast-Fourier transform technique. Particle modeling results were compared to suspension modeling experiments by other researchers. Results show a strong influence of lubricant fluid velocity on that of the wear particles.  相似文献

The rolling contact fatigue (RCF) life of highly loaded machine components is significantly influenced by the surface roughness features so that there is a continuous effort to design the topography of rubbing surfaces to enhance lubrication efficiency and prolong the operation of machine components. It can be suggested from the recent experimental results that lubricant emitted from shallow micro-dents could effectively lift off the real roughness features and reduce the asperities interactions within rolling/sliding mixed lubricated contacts. Thereby the additional supply of lubricant from surface features could help to reduce the risk of surface damage through the reduction of the interaction of rubbing surfaces during start-up or starvation. However, the introduction of such roughness features into the rubbing surfaces of highly loaded non-conformal contacts should consider not only the effects on lubrication film thickness but also on RCF.That is why this study is focused on the effects of surface texturing on RCF within non-conformal rolling/sliding contacts operated under mixed lubrication conditions. The principal task has been whether possible beneficial effect on film thickness is not accompanied by the reduction in RCF life. Textures with various sizes of micro-dents and their arrangement within the contacts have been considered. It has been found that results obtained with textured surfaces have exhibited no obvious reduction in RCF. Conversely, some increase in RCF using textured surfaces was observed that could be attributed to the positive contribution of micro-dents working as lubricant micro-reservoirs that reduce asperities interactions. Nevertheless, further experiments are necessary to confirm this possible beneficial contribution of surface texturing on RCF.  相似文献

Surface texturing has been successfully used for conformal contacts in many tribological applications in an effort to diminish friction and wear. However, the use of such a surface modifications are still in nascent as far as highly loaded contacts between non-conformal surfaces are concerned. It is mainly caused by the fact that the presence of such micro-features within these contacts can significantly influence the pressure distribution within the contact. Nevertheless, it has been shown in recent studies that the surface texturing can also have beneficial tribological effects if the depth of micro-features is properly designed. This paper is devoted to the experimental study of the effect of the micro-dents of various depths on thin lubrication films to find an experimental evidence of the micro-feature depth threshold for surface texturing applications in highly loaded non-conformal surfaces. The behaviour of an array of micro-dents within thin EHD contacts has been studied by thin film colorimetric interferometry. The influence of surface texturing on lubricant film formation has been observed under sliding/rolling conditions. The significant effect of micro-dents depth on lubricant film thickness is observed for positive slide-to-roll ratio when the disc is moving faster than the micro-textured ball. The presence of deep micro-dents within lubricated contact results in film thickness reduction downstream. As the depth of micro-dents is reduced, this effect diminishes and beneficial effect of micro-dents on film thickness formation has been observed. No significant influence of micro-dents depth on lubricant film shape has been observed in case of negative slide-to-roll conditions when micro-dents do not cause film thickness reduction regardless of their depths.  相似文献

A numerical solution to the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) problem of two coated elastic bodies in line contact is introduced. The non‐Newtonian behavior of the lubricant is incorporated into EHL analysis using Eyring's nonlinear viscous model. The surface elastic deformations are computed from full elasticity analysis of layered elastic half‐space. The iterative Newton–Raphson technique is used in the numerical solution. Subsurface stresses are calculated using two different techniques, the numerical integral scheme based on Fourier transformation and the finite element method. Effective lubrication performance of metal-on-metal hip implants only requires optimum conformity within the main loaded area, while it is advantageous to increase the clearance in the equatorial region. Such a varying clearance can be achieved by using non-spherical bearing surfaces for either acetabular or femoral components. An elastohydrodynamic lubrication model of a novel metal-on-metal hip prosthesis using a non-spherical femoral bearing surface against a spherical cup was solved under loading and motion conditions specified by ISO standard. A full numerical methodology of considering the geometric variation in the rotating non-spherical head in elastohydrodynamic lubrication solution was presented, which is applicable to all non-spherical head designs. The lubrication performance of a hip prosthesis using a specific non-spherical femoral head, Alpharabola, was analysed and compared with those of spherical bearing surfaces and a non-spherical Alpharabola cup investigated in previous studies. The sensitivity of the lubrication performance to the anteversion angle of the Alpharabola head was also investigated. Results showed that the non-spherical head introduced a large squeeze-film action and also led to a large variation in clearance within the loaded area. With the same equatorial clearance, the lubrication performance of the metal-on-metal hip prosthesis using an Alpharabola head was better than that of the conventional spherical bearings but worse than that of the metal-on-metal hip prosthesis using an Alpharabola cup. The reduction in the lubrication performance caused by the initial anteversion angle of the non-spherical head was small, compared with the improvement resulted from the non-spherical geometry.  相似文献

In this paper, a computer program was developed to generate non-Gaussian surfaces with specified standard deviation, autocorrelation function, skewness and kurtosis, based on digital FIR technique. A thermal model of mixed lubrication in point contacts is proposed, and used to study the roughness effect. The area ratio, load ratio, maximum pressure, maximum surface temperature and average film thickness as a function of skewness and kurtosis are studied at different value of rms. Numerical examples show that skewness and kurtosis have a great effect on the contact parameters of mixed lubrication.  相似文献

Water lubrication is one of the candidates of the tribo-system with low negative environmental impact. It is well known that some kinds of ceramics show excellent tribological properties under lubrication with water. The characteristic improvement was attempted by giving texturing to Si3N4 so that the water lubrication might spread as a representative of the ecotribology system. The surface laser texturing showed the friction reducing effect under the sliding condition of the low bearing characteristic number. The mechanism of the triblogical property improvement by the laser surface texturing was discussed based on the experiment results and the surface analytical results.  相似文献

The Spacer Layer Imaging (SLIM) method has been used to investigate the influence of transverse roughness on the thickness and shape of elastohydrodynamic (EHD) films. The effects of entrainment speed and lubricant viscosity on film distribution are shown for three distinct asperity heights over a wide range of lambda ratio (ratio of lubricant film thickness, separating two contacting surfaces, to their combined RMS roughnesses). Subsequently, the behaviour of film distribution for a range of mixed rolling–sliding conditions is also studied for both thin and thick film conditions. This study provides an estimate of how and when transverse asperities decompress and an indication of conditions under which these asperities cease to affect lubricant film formation.  相似文献

Laser surface texturing (LST) technique was utilised on a cylinder liner in a diesel engine. In order to analyse the effect of LST micro‐dimples on the lubrication and friction properties of cylinder liner–piston ring (CL–PR), we developed a new mixed lubrication model on the basis of the average Reynolds equation and asperity contacts equation. The model can consider the coupling effects between the surface roughness of non‐texturing regions and micro‐dimples and the synergistic effects of multi‐micro‐dimples. The results show that cylinder liner surface by LST can form effective hydrodynamic lubrication effect in most regions of the strokes, only near the dead points, the friction pair is in mixed lubrication state, asperity contact plays a major role in balancing the external load and the asperity friction force is obvious. The micro‐dimple parameters were optimised to obtain a better lubrication effect with the following optimised results: rp = 30–60 µm, Sp = 0.2–0.4 and e = 0.03–0.1. The aim of the present research work was to investigate the effectiveness of grooved surface texturing with a rhombic geometry under different lubrication regimes. Tribological investigation under unidirectional sliding was focused on the effect of texturing parameters including pattern area density on the coefficient of friction under different lubrication regimes, achieved by varying sliding speed and lubricant viscosity. Grooved patterns with different textured area densities were produced on steel samples by electrical discharge machining. Results of this investigation showed that under boundary lubrication, textures resist sliding thus resulting in increased friction. The largest improvement of friction reduction was observed under hydrodynamic lubrication, for low‐viscosity oil when using the textured disc with 21% pattern area density. The reduction of the coefficient of friction if compared with the untextured surface was of approximately 24%. Examination of the sliding surfaces has not shown any quantifiable wear for the contact conditions studied.  相似文献

In many applications (e.g. roller, barrel or needle bearings) surface features exhibit longitudinal alignment to the direction of motion. These features are produced by surface finishing techniques in the circumferential direction and are associated with line or very wide elliptical contact geometries. In such a case, the contact length in the direction of motion is considerably shorter comparing its width and the effect of a longitudinal roughness could significantly influence the lubrication film formation. Recent experimental studies have indicated less severe effect of a longitudinal roughness on lubrication film formation in the comparisons with that observed with transversely orientated roughness caused by the inlet perturbation. Nevertheless, these experimental studies have been focused on the behaviour of artificially produced asperities within a circular contact. The quantitative experimental study of longitudinal real surface roughness within a line contact has not been realized yet. That is why, in this study, the line contact formed between a steel tapered roller and glass disc is observed within an optical test rig and the effects of real surface roughness on lubrication film formation are studied. Experiments carried out under pure rolling conditions have shown that the depth is the key parameter that influences the effect on the film thickness. If the roughness features are shallow, the lubrication film shape within the contact follows the shape of the surface closely. However, the groove having only about 800 nm in depth divided the line contact into two parts that behave as two separate line contacts. Such an effect can increase the risk of the wear of rubbing surfaces as the lubrication film thickness between the real machine components can be significantly lower than expected.  相似文献

Laser surface texturing (LST) is an emerging effective method for improving the tribological performance of friction units lubricated with oil. In LST technology, a pulsating laser beam is used to create thousands of arranged microdimples on a surface by a material ablation process. These dimples generate hydrodynamic pressure between oil-lubricated parallel sliding surfaces. The impact of LST on lubricating-regime transitions was investigated in this study. Tribological experiments were conducted with a pin-on-disk apparatus at sliding speeds in the range of 0.015–0.75 m/s and nominal contact pressures that ranged from 0.16 to 1.6 MPa. Two oils with different viscosities (54.8 and 124.7 cSt at 40 °C) were used as lubricants. The test results showed that laser texturing expanded the contact parameters in terms of load and speed for hydrodynamic lubrication, as indicated by friction transitions on the Stribeck curve. The beneficial effects of laser surface texturing are more pronounced at higher speeds and loads and with higher viscosity oil.  相似文献

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the tribological performance of different laser surface texture patterns, with unpolished material bulges around the dimples, under realistic operating conditions of starved lubrication, for use in air-conditioning and refrigeration compressors. Compared to untextured gray cast iron surfaces, the texture patterns showed significant tribological improvements. Long durability tests also highlighted the long term usefulness of surface texturing. The dominant wear mode of the texture patterns was found to be mechanical polishing and the tribological behavior was found to be largely independent of the type of lubricant or refrigerant.  相似文献

Metal-on-metal (MOM) hip joint bearings are currently under discussion as alternatives to metal-on-polymer (MOP) bearings. Some criteria under scrutiny are the wear resistance, the influence of wear particles on the surrounding tissue, as well as the frictional torque. In order to understand and control the wear behavior of such a bearing a close correlation between the microstructures of the alloys used and the acting wear mechanisms has to be found. Thus, commercially available CoCrMo-balls were tested against self mating concave pins in a physiological fluid at 37°C under reciprocating sliding wear (1 Hz). The compressive load was 750 N (body weight). For 2×106 cycles tests were carried out continuously and with periodically occurring resting periods. On the basis of the observed wear appearances the acting wear mechanisms are defined and evaluated as to their contribution to the wear behavior. Due to the high local contact stresses surface fatigue prevails initially. Cr– and Mo–carbides are fractured and torn off the surfaces bringing about additional surface fatigue by indentations and initiating abrasion. The weight loss can be predominately attributed to these mechanically dominated wear mechanisms. In a parallel occurring tribochemical reaction layers are generated from denatured proteins. These adhere rigidly to the surfaces and cover parts of the contacting surfaces avoiding adhesion. Thus, the wear behavior is mainly influenced by the alternating balance between surface fatigue and abrasion on the one side and by tribochemical reactions on the other side.  相似文献

The tribological property of aluminium alloy is critical for its reliable operation in practical applications. In this paper, the tribological performance of laser‐textured 2024 aluminium alloy is studied in unidirectional sliding tests under boundary lubrication. The dimples were produced on the aluminium alloy surface by using a pulse Nd : YAG laser. The topographical microstructures of these laser‐induced textures were characterised by optical and scanning electron microscopy. In comparison with untextured surfaces, a significant improvement in friction behaviour was observed for the textured surfaces. The influences of dimples density on the tribological properties were investigated. Two types of oil with different viscosities were evaluated as lubricants. It was found that the beneficial effects of laser surface texturing are more pronounced at higher speed and load with higher viscosity oil. The optimum dimples density of 8.5% was found to have a lower friction coefficient. On basis of the experimental results, the mechanism of friction reduction and anti‐wear is proposed. Grease thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) problems of line contacts are analysed numerically. The effects of temperature and rheological parameters on grease TEHL are investigated using the Herschel-Bulkley model as a rheological model of greases. The pressure distribution, the shape of grease film, mean film temperature and surface temperature of solid wall in line contacts are obtained. It is found that thermal effects on the minimum film thickness become remarkable at high rolling speeds. The effect of yield stress of the Herschel-Bulkley model on minimum film thickness is negligible, while the flow index and viscosity parameter have significant effects on minimum film thickness.  相似文献

The main design features of metal-on-metal (MOM) hip resurfacing prostheses in promoting elastohydrodynamic lubrication were investigated in the present study, including the femoral head diameter, the clearance, and the cup wall thickness. Simplified conceptual models were developed, based on equivalent uniform wall thicknesses for both the cup and the head as well as the support materials representing bone and cement, and subsequently used for elastohydrodynamic lubrication analysis. Both typical first- and second-generation MOM hip resurfacing prostheses with different clearances and cup wall thicknesses were considered with a fixed large bearing diameter of 50 mm, as well as a 28 mm diameter MOM total hip replacement bearing for the purpose of comparison. The importance of the head diameter and the clearance in promoting elastohydrodynamic lubrication was confirmed. Furthermore, it was also predicted that a relatively thin acetabular cup in the more recently introduced second-generation MOM hip resurfacing prostheses would be capable of improving elastohydrodynamic lubrication even further.  相似文献
