A single‐pot atom transfer radical polymerization was used for the first time to successfully synthesize polyacrylonitrile with a molecular weight higher than 80,000 and a narrow polydispersity as low as 1.18. This was achieved with CuBr/isophthalic acid as the catalyst, 2‐bromopropionitrile as the initiator, and N,N‐dimethylformamide as the solvent. The effects of the solvent on the polymerization of acrylonitrile were also investigated. The induction period was shorter in N,N‐dimethylformamide than in propylene carbonate and toluene, and the rate of the polymerization in N,N‐dimethylformamide was fastest. The molecular weight of polyacrylonitrile agreed reasonably well with the theoretical molecular weight in N,N‐dimethylformamide. When chlorine was used in either the initiator or the catalyst, the rate of polymerization showed a trend of decreasing, and the molecular weight deviated from the theoretical predication significantly. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. FeCl3 coordinated by succinic acid was used as the catalyst for the first time in azobisisobutyronitrile‐initiated reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN). N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) was used as a solvent to improve the solubility of the ligand. A FeCl3 to succinic acid ratio of 0.5 not only gives the best control of molecular weight and its distribution but also provides rather rapid reaction rate. Effects of different solvents on polymerization of AN were also investigated. The rate of the polymerization in DMF is faster than that in propylene carbonate and toluene. The molecular weight of polyacrylonitrile agrees reasonably well with the theoretical molecular weight in DMF. The rate of polymerization increases with increasing the polymerization temperature, and the apparent activation energy was calculated to be 64.8 kJ mol?1. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reverse atom transfer radical polymerization was first used to successfully synthesize polyacrylonitrile under microwave irradiation. FeCl3, coordinated by isophthalic acid, was used as the catalyst, and 2,2′‐azobisisoheptonitrilewas used as the initiator. N,N‐Dimethylformamide was used as the solvent to improve the solubility of the ligand. Under the same experimental conditions, the apparent rate constant under microwave irradiation was higher than that under conventional heating. The polymerization not only showed the best control of the molecular weight and its distribution but also provided a rather rapid reaction rate with the [acrylonitrile]/[2,2′‐azobisisoheptonitrile]/[FeCl3]/[isophthalic acid] ratio of 300 : 1 : 1 : 2. The polymers obtained were used as macroinitiators to initiate the chain extension and successfully synthesize acrylonitrile polymers with a molecular weight higher than 50,000 and a narrow polydispersity as low as 1.30. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate was investigated in different solvents: xylene, N,N‐dimethylformamide, and pyridine. The polymerizations were uncontrolled, using 2,2′‐bipyridine as a ligand in xylene and pyridine because the catalyst (CuBr2/2,2′‐bipyridine complex) had poor solubility in the xylene system. In the pyridine system, the solubility of the catalyst increased, but the solvent could complex with CuBr2, which influenced the control of the polymerization. In the N,N‐dimethylformamide system, the catalyst could be dissolved in the solvent completely, but the ? N(CH3)2 group in N,N‐dimethylformamide could also complex with CuBr2, so the polymerization could not be well controlled. The ligand of 4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine was also investigated in xylene; the introduction of the ? CH(C4H9)2 group enabled the CuBr2/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine complex to easily dissolve in xylene, and the polymerizations were well controlled. The number‐average molecular weight increased linearly with the monomer conversion from 4280 to 14,700. During the whole polymerization, the polydispersities were quite low (1.07–1.10). © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2007  相似文献

Iron(II) chloride coordinated by succinic acid was first used as the catalyst in 2‐chloropropionitrile‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of acrylonitrile. The molecular weight of polyacrylonitrile agrees reasonably well with the theoretical molecular weight of N,N‐dimethylformamide. The rate of polymerization increases and the induction period becomes shorter with increasing polymerization temperature, and the apparent activation energy was calculated to be 56.5 kJ mol?1. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Pentaerythritol (PT) was converted into four‐arm initiator pentaerythritol tetrakis(2‐chloropropionyl) (PT‐Cl) via reaction with 2‐chloropropionyl chloride. Uniform (monodisperse) star‐polystyrene nanoparticles were prepared by emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene, using PT‐Cl/CuCl/bpy (bpy is 2,2′‐dipyridyl) as the initiating system. The structures of PT‐Cl and polymer were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. The morphology, size and size distribution of the star‐polystyrene nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and photon correlation spectroscopy. It was found that the average diameters of star‐polystyrene nanoparticles were smaller than 100 nm (30–90 nm) and monodisperse; moreover, the particle size could be controlled by the monomer/initiator ratio and the surfactant concentration. The average hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) of the nanoparticles increased gradually on increasing the ratio of styrene to PT‐Cl and decreased on enhancing the surfactant concentration or increasing the catalyst concentration. The controllability of the atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the polar solvent N,N‐dimethylformamide and the nonpolar solvent xylene with 4‐(chloromethyl)phenyltrimethoxysilane as an initiator and with CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine and CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine as catalyst systems was studied. Gel permeation chromatography analysis established that in the nonpolar solvent xylene, much better control of the molecular weight and polydispersity of poly(methyl methacrylate) was achieved with the CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine catalyst system than with the CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine as catalyst system. In the polar solvent N,N‐dimethylformamide, unlike in xylene, the polymerization was more controllable with the CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine catalyst system than with the CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine catalyst system. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Commercial brominated poly(isobutylene‐co‐isoprene) (BIIR) rubber has been directly used for the initiation of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) by utilizing the allylic bromine atoms on the macromolecular chains of BIIR. The graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) from the backbone of BIIR which was used as a macroinitiator was carried out in xylene at 85 °C with CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as a catalytic complex. The polymerization conditions were optimized by adjusting the catalyst and monomer concentration to reach a higher monomer conversion and meanwhile suppress macroscopic gelation during the polymerization process. This copolymerization followed a first‐order kinetic behavior with respect to the monomer concentration, and the number‐average molecular weight of the grafted poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) increased with reaction time. The resultant BIIR‐graft‐PMMA copolymers showed phase separation morphology as characterized by atomic force microscopy, and the presence of PMMA phase increased the polarity of the BIIR copolymers. This study demonstrated the feasibility of using commercial BIIR polymer directly as a macromolecular initiator for ATRP reactions, which opens more possibilities for BIIR modifications for wider applications. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of n‐butyl methacrylate (BMA) in waterborne media using Cu(II) complexes with azo initiators (i.e., reverse ATRP) was conducted. The influence of several factors, such as surfactant, catalyst, and reaction time, on the stability of the emulsion, the particle size, the morphology of the emulsion particles, and the control of the polymerization was investigated. The results showed great differences between ATRP and conventional emulsion polymerization, especially the nucleation mechanism and the kinetics. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) (PBMA)‐b‐polystyrene (PSt) diblock copolymers were synthesized by emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). PBMA macroinitiators that contained alkyl bromide end groups were obtained by the emulsion ATRP of n‐butyl methacrylate with BrCH3CHCOOC2H5 as the initiator; these were used to initiate the ATRP of styrene (St). The latter procedure was carried out at 85°C with CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine as the catalyst and polyoxyethylene(23) lauryl ether as the surfactant. With this technique, PBMA‐b‐PSt diblock copolymers were synthesized. The polymerization was nearly controlled; the ATRP of St from the macroinitiators showed linear increases in number‐average molecular weight with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR spectroscopy, 1H‐NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry. The effects of the molecular weight of the macroinitiators, macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, surfactant concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP are also reported. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 2123–2129, 2005  相似文献

Reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of n‐butyl methacrylate (BMA) was conducted in an aqueous dispersed system. The influence of the surfactant, catalyst, reaction time and temperature on the colloidal stability and the control of polymerization was investigated. As a result, using an azo initiator (AIBN), a non‐ionic surfactant (Brij 35) and a hydrophobic ligand (dNbpy) to complex a copper halide, polymers with predetermined molecular weight and low polydispersity were obtained as stable latexes. FeCl3 coordinated by triphenylphosphine was first used as the catalyst in the 1,1,2,2‐tetraphenyl‐1,2‐ethanediol‐initiated reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of acrylonitrile. A FeCl3/triphenylphosphine ratio of 0.5 not only gave the best control of the molecular weight and its distribution but also provided a rather rapid reaction rate. The rate of polymerization increased with increasing polymerization temperature, and the apparent activation energy was calculated to be 62.4 kJ/mol. When FeCl3 was replaced with CuCl2, the reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of acrylonitrile did not show prominent living characteristics. To demonstrate the active nature of the polymer chain end, the polymers were used as macroinitiators to advance the chain‐extension polymerization in the presence of a CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine catalyst system via a conventional atom transfer radical polymerization process. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The kinetics of methyl methacrylate (MMA) homopolymerization performed by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is investigated in detail using ethyl‐2‐bromopropionate (EPN‐Br) as initiator, CuBr as catalyst, and pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as ligand in ionic liquids (ILs) and acetonitrile. ILs in this research covered two different substitutional imidazolium cations and anions including halogen and halogen‐free ones. The typical cations include 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium, 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium and the typical anions include bromide, tetrafluoroborate. The effects of solvents, temperature, and reaction ingredients ratios on the polymerization kinetics are all investigated in this article and the apparent energy of activation (ΔE) calculated for the ATRP of MMA in 1‐butyl‐3‐methyl‐imidazolium tetrafluoroborate is 6.95 KJ/mol. The number‐average molecular weights (Mn) increase linearly with conversion but are much higher than the theoretical values. It is probably due to the low concentration of deactivator at the early stage of polymerization and the lower bond energy of C‐Br in PMMA‐Br than that in EPN‐Br. Moreover, the catalyst is easily separated from the polymer and the regenerated catalyst is reused for more than three times. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Well‐defined poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with an α‐isobutyronitrile group and an ω‐bromine atom as the end groups was synthesized by the microemulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) at 70°C with a 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile/CuBr2/2,2′‐bipyridine system. The conversion of the polymerization reached 81.9%. The viscosity‐average molecular weight of PMMA was high (380,000), and the polydispersity index was 1.58. The polymerization of MMA exhibited some controlled radical polymerization characteristics. The mechanism of controlled polymerization was studied. The presence of hydrogen and bromine atoms as end groups of the obtained PMMA was determined by 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The shape and size of the final polymer particles were analyzed by scanning probe microscopy, and the diameters of the obtained particles were usually in the range of 60–100 nm. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is a transition metal complex‐catalyzed controlled/‘living’ radical process. Recently, there has been a lot of interest focused on decreasing the catalyst loading and reducing the cost of post‐polymerization purification for ATRP. In this work, urotropine was found to significantly enhance the ATRP of methyl acrylate (MA), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) catalyzed by CuBr/N,N,N′,N′,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) and CuBr/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethylamine) (Me6TREN). With the addition of 25 times the amount of urotropine relative to CuBr, well‐controlled polymerizations of MA, MMA and St were obtained at catalyst‐to‐initiator ratios of 0.01, 0.05 and 0.05, respectively, producing the corresponding polymers with molecular weights close to theoretical values and low polydispersities. The catalyst concentration could even be reduced to ppm level at a catalyst‐to‐initiator ratio as low as 0.001 in the polymerization of MA. These results indicate that urotropine is a very effective and versatile promoter for both CuBr/PMDETA and CuBr/Me6TREN. In the presence of urotropine, the catalyst loading could be reduced by as much as 1000 times. As PMDETA is one of the cheapest ATRP ligands, the combination of urotropine with CuBr/PMDETA could substantially reduce the catalyst loading and the cost of post‐polymerization purification at the industrial scale and thus is promising for potential industrial applications. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐polyurethane‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) tri‐block copolymers have been synthesized successfully through atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate using telechelic bromo‐terminated polyurethane/CuBr/N,N,N,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine initiating system. As the time increases, the number‐average molecular weight increases linearly from 6400 to 37,000. This shows that the poly methyl methacrylate blocks were attached to polyurethane block. As the polymerization time increases, both conversion and molecular weight increased and the molecular weight increases linearly with increasing conversion. These results indicate that the formation of the tri‐block copolymers was through atom transfer radical polymerization mechanism. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectral results of the triblock copolymers show that the molar ratio between polyurethane and poly (methyl methacrylate) blocks is in the range of 1 : 16.3 to 1 : 449.4. Differential scanning calorimetry results show Tg of the soft segment at ?35°C and Tg of the hard segment at 75°C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献
