A novel vinyl ether-type RAFT agent, benzyl 2-(vinyloxy)ethyl carbonotrithioate (BVCT) was synthesized for various block copolymers via the combination of living cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers and reversible addition−fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The novel BVCT–trifluoroacetic acid adduct play an important role to produce well-defined block copolymers, which is both as a cationogen under EtAlCl2 initiation system in the presence of ethyl acetate for living cationic polymerization and a RAFT agent for blocks by RAFT polymerization. The resulting polymer, poly(vinyl ether)s, by living cationic polymerization had a high number average α-end functionality (≥0.9) as determined by both 1H NMR and MALDI-TOF-MS spectrometry. In addition, this poly(vinyl ether)s worked well as a macromolecular chain transfer agent for RAFT polymerization. The RAFT polymerization of radically polymerizable monomers was conducted in toluene using 2,2′-azobis(isobutyronitrile) at 70 °C. For example, a double thermoresponsive block copolymer (MOVE61-b-NIPAM150) consisting of 2-methoxyethyl vinyl ether (MOVE) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) was prepared via the combination of living cationic polymerization and RAFT polymerization. The block copolymer reversibly formed and deformed micellar assemblies above the phase separation temperature (Tps) of poly(NIPAM) block in water. This BVCT is not only functioned as an initiator, but also acted as a monomer. When BVCT was copolymerized with MOVE by living cationic polymerization, followed by graft copolymerization with NIPAM via RAFT polymerization, well-defined graft copolymers (MOVEn-co-BVCTm)-g-NIPAMx (n = 62–73, m = 1–9, x = 19–214) were successfully obtained. However, no micelle formed in water above Tps of poly(NIPAM) graft chain unlike the case of block copolymers.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl acetate) combs have been prepared via macromolecular design via interchange of xanthate (MADIX)/reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization using xanthate functionalized polymer cores. The comb backbones were prepared using well-defined poly(vinyl alcohol) PVA polymers with a degree of polymerization of 20, 100 and 170, respectively. Functionalization with xanthates via R-group or a Z-group approach resulted in the formation of macromolecular MADIX agents. While Z group designed macromolecular xanthate agents appeared to inhibit the polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc), R group designed macromolecular xanthate agents achieved to mediate efficiently the bulk polymerization of VAc affording PVAc combs. However, the growth of the combs was accompanied at low conversions by the formation of linear polymer chains as a result of the constant initiation (AIBN) and shoulders, which can be attributed to intermolecular coupling reactions. The proportions of single chains and termination products were observed to increase with the degree of polymerization of the macromolecular MADIX agents broadening the molecular weight distribution. As a result of a stable ester link between the branches and the PVA backbone, the branched PVAc architectures were finally hydrolyzed to afford poly(vinyl alcohol) combs.  相似文献

Living free radical polymerization technology (macromolecular design via the interchange of xanthates (MADIX)) was applied to give accesses to chain length and conversion dependent termination rate coefficients of vinyl acetate (VAc) at 80 °C using the MADIX agent 2-ethoxythiocarbonylsulfanyl-propionic acid methyl ester (EPAME). The kinetic data were verified and probed by simulations using the PREDICI® modelling package. The reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT) chain length dependent termination (CLD-T) methodology can be applied using a monomer reaction order of unity, since VAc displays significantly lower monomer reaction orders than those observed in acrylate systems (ω(VAc, 80 °C)=1.17±0.05). The observed monomer reaction order for VAc is assigned to chain length dependent termination and a low presence of transfer reactions. The α value for the chain length regime of log(i)=1.25−3.25 (in the often employed expression ) reads 0.09±0.05 at low monomer to polymer conversion (10%) and increases significantly towards larger conversions (α=0.55±0.05 at 80%). Concomitantly with a lesser amount of midchain radicals, the chain length dependence of kt is significantly less pronounced in the VAc system than in the corresponding acrylate systems under identical reaction conditions. The RAFT(MADIX)-CLD-T technique also allows for mapping of kt as a function of conversion at constant chain lengths. Similar to observations made earlier with methyl acrylate, the decrease of kt with conversion is more pronounced at increased chain lengths, with a strong decrease in kt exceeding two logarithmic units from 10 to 80% conversion at chain lengths exceeding 1800.  相似文献

Two highly supercritical CO2-soluble, poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc)-based macro-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents were synthesized. The RAFT agents were used for the first time in RAFT/macromolecular design via the interchange of xanthates (MADIX) and polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) and vinyl pivalate (VPi) in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). A homopolymer PVAc and a block copolymer PVAc-b-PVPi made by RAFT/MADIX polymerization were characterized, and the effects of time and RAFT agents on polymerization were examined. For the 8.4 wt% RAFT agent in VAc, the molecular mass (M n ) of homopolymer PVAc was 26,000 g mol?1 and PDI was 1.35. For the copolymerization of VPi using 9.8 wt% PVAc-RAFT agent in VPi for 24 h, the M n and PDI of PVAc-b-PVPi reached 32,400 g mol?1 and 1.42, respectively. These results suggest that the polydispersity can be controlled during the clean production of PVAc and PVPi by RAFT/MADIX polymerization in scCO2.  相似文献

Reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of less‐activated monomers in a controlled fashion is challenging due to the high reactivity and instability of the propagating radicals. We have designed dithiocarbamate‐based RAFT agents with morpholine as activating ‘Z’ group and benzyl, ethyl(1‐ethanoate)yl, ethyl(2‐propanoate)yl and cyanomethyl as ‘R’ leaving groups and investigated them for the reversible deactivation radical polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) and N‐vinylimidazole (N‐VIm). RAFT polymerization of VAc and N‐VIm at 70 °C using azobisisobutyronitrile as a free radical initiator proceeded in a controlled fashion as demonstrated by a linear increase in molar mass with conversion. Interestingly, the polymerization of VAc followed fast kinetics (approx. 60 min) with good to moderate control affording high‐molar‐mass poly(VAc) polymers. Furthermore, the synthesized chain transfer agents were able to polymerize N‐VIm under controlled conditions. The morpholine RAFT agents bearing cyanomethyl and ethyl(2‐propanoate)yl leaving groups showed better control of the polymerization of VAc and N‐VIm compared to the others. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Comb-shaped graft copolymers with poly(methyl acrylate) as a handle were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and ring-opening polymerization (ROP) techniques in three steps. First, copolymers of poly(styrene-co-chloromethyl styrene), poly(St-co-CMS), were prepared by RAFT copolymerization of St and CMS using 1-(ethoxycarbonyl)prop-1-yl dithiobenzoate (EPDTB) as RAFT agent. Second, the polymerization of MA using poly(St-co-CMS)-SC(S)Ph as macromolecular chain transfer agent produced block copolymer poly(St-co-CMS)-b-PMA. Third, cationic ring-opening polymerization of THF was performed using poly(St-co-CMS)-b-PMA/AgClO4 as initiating system to produce comb-shaped copolymers. The structures of the poly(St-co-CMS), poly(St-co-CMS)-b-PMA and final comb-shaped copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC).  相似文献

Here, we described a strategy for preparing well-defined block copolymers, poly(styrene)-b-poly(vinyl acetate) (PS-b-PVAc), containing middle azobenzene moiety via the combination of the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and “click” chemistry. Firstly, a novel RAFT agent containing α-alkyne and azobenzene chromophore in R group, 2-(3-ethynylphenylazophenoxycarbonyl)prop-2-yl-9H-carbazole-9-carbodithioate (EACDT), was synthesized and used to mediate the RAFT polymerization of styrene (St). Well-defined α-alkyne end-functionalized poly(styrene) (PS) was obtained. Secondly, the RAFT polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) was conducted using functionalized RAFT reagent with ω-azide structure in Z group, O-(2-azidoethyl) S-benzyl dithiocarbonate (AEBDC). Well-defined ω-azide end-functionalized poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) was obtained. Afterwards, the resulting α-alkyne terminated PS was coupled by “click” chemistry with the azide terminated PVAc. The block copolymer, PS-b-PVAc, was obtained with tailored structures. The products from each step were characterized and confirmed by GPC, 1H NMR, IR and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) examination. Kinetics of the trans-cis-trans isomerization from azobenzene chromophore in PS-b-PVAc and PS were investigated in CHCl3 solutions.  相似文献

In this work, the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) was successfully performed at room temperature using 60Co γ-irradiation as the initiation source. Under the dose rate of 10 Gy/min irradiation, the polymerization proceeded smoothly and converted approximately 90% of the monomer within 7 h. The molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) remained narrow (Mw/Mn < 1.35) up to 90% conversion. Compared to AIBN-initiated RAFT polymerization at 60 °C, 60Co γ-irradiation-initiated RAFT polymerization is a technique that can better control the molecular weight, especially at high conversion. The 1H NMR spectra and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry confirmed that most of the chain ends of poly(VAc) (PVAc) from γ-irradiated RAFT polymerization were living and can be reactivated for chain-extension reactions. The microstructures of PVAc from 60Co γ-irradiated RAFT polymerization (almost head-to-tail addition) and AIBN-initiated RAFT polymerization (5% tail-to-tail addition) were different, as revealed by the 13C NMR spectra. For the first time, 60Co γ-irradiation was used as an initiation source for RAFT polymerization of VAc at room temperature.  相似文献

Dispersion polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) has been successfully performed in supercritical carbon dioxide at P=370 bar and T=65 °C with azobis(isobutyronitrile) as initiator and a hydrophilic/CO2-philic poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(1,1,2,2-tetrahydroperfluorodecyl acrylate) (PEO-b-PFDA) block copolymer as steric stabilizer. The PEO-b-PFDA (2K/21K) block copolymer was synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Spherical particles of poly(HEMA) were obtained in the range of 200-400 nm diameter size with a narrow particle size distribution (Dw/Dn<1.1). The effect of the stabilizer concentration on the dispersion polymerization was investigated from 20 w/w% down to 3.5 w/w% versus HEMA. Precipitation polymerization in the absence of stabilizer lead to the formation of large aggregates of partially coalesced particles whereas discrete spherical particles of poly(HEMA) were obtained by dispersion polymerization even at low concentration of PEO-b-PFDA (3.5 w/w% versus HEMA).  相似文献

(S)-2-(Ethyl propionate)-(O-ethyl xanthate) (X1) and (S)-2-(Ethyl isobutyrate)-(O-ethyl xanthate) (X2) were used as the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents for the radical polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc). The former showed the better chain transfer ability in the polymerization at 60°C. Kinetic study with both RAFT agents showed pseudo-first order kinetics up to around 85% monomer conversion. Molecular weight of the resulting polymer increased linearly with increase in the monomer conversion up to around 85%. The observed molecular weights calculated from 1H-NMR spectrum [Mn(NMR)] are close to the corresponding theoretical molecular weights [Mn(theor)]. The corresponding polydispersity index (PDI) of the resulting polymers remained almost constant at around 1.2 up to ∼ 65% monomer conversion and then increased gradually with the further increase in the monomer conversion. Chain-end analysis of the resulting polymers by 1H-NMR showed clearly that polymerization started with the radical forming out of the xanthate mediator. The negligible homo-chain extension and the hetero-chain extension involving synthesis of poly(VAc)-b-poly(NVP) diblock copolymer were occurred.

Biocompatible poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PCL-b-PVA), poly(δ-valerolactone)-b-PVA, and poly(trimethylene carbonate)-b-PVA block copolymers were synthesized at 30 °C using a hydroxyl-functionalized xanthate reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent, 2-hydroxyethyl 2-(ethoxycarbonothioylthio)propanoate, as a dual initiator for ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and RAFT polymerization in a one-pot procedure. The ROP of ε-caprolactone, δ-valerolactone, and trimethylene carbonate was first performed using diphenyl phosphate as the ROP catalyst followed by the RAFT polymerization of vinyl chloroacetate after quenching the ROP with 4-dimethyamino pyridine. The resulting block copolymers were aminolyzed directly to the PVA-based biocompatible block copolymers by adding hexylamine to the reaction mixture. To the best of our knowledge, this is the most convenient method for synthesizing PVA-based biocompatible block copolymers.  相似文献

Star polymers based on styrene/divinyl benzene (St/DVB) and PSt-b-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (NIPAAM)/DVB have been successively prepared by ‘arm-first’ method via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The linear macro RAFT agent PSt-SC(S)Ph was prepared by RAFT polymerization of St using benzyl dithiobenzoate and AIBN as RAFT agent and initiator. Successive RAFT polymerization of NIPAAM with PSt-SC(S)Ph as macro RAFT agent to afford diblock copolymer, PSt-b-PNIPAAM-SC(S)Ph. The coupling reactions of PSt-SC(S)Ph or PSt-b-PNIPAAM-SC(S)Ph in the presence of DVB produced the star copolymers, C(PSt)n or C(PSt-b-PNIPAAM)n. The molar ratio of DVB/PSt-SC(S)Ph and polymerization time influenced the yields, molecular weight and distribution of the star-shaped polymers, which was characterized by 1H NMR and IR spectra, GPC measurements as well as DLS.  相似文献

A new amphiphilic AB2 star copolymer was synthesized by the combination of ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Two different routes (methods A and B) were employed firstly to prepare the poly(oxanorbornene)-based monotelechelic polymers as the hydrophobic arm bearing dibromo-ended group via ROMP in the presence of two different terminating agents catalyzed by first generation Grubbs catalyst. The values of capping efficiency (CE) of the polymers were determined by NMR, which were 94% and 67% for methods A and B, respectively. Then, the dibromo-ended ROMP polymers were used as the macroinitiators for ATRP of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) to produce two hydrophilic arms. The prepared amphiphilic AB2 star copolymers poly(7-oxanorborn-5-ene-exo,exo-2,3-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester)-block-bis[poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)] (PONBDMn-b-(PDMAEMAm)2) with a fixed chain length of hydrophobic PONBDM and various hydrophilic PDMAEMA chain lengths can self-assemble spontaneously in water to form polymeric micelles, which were characterized by dynamic light scattering, atom force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy measurements.  相似文献

To prepare high molecular weight (HMW) poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) with high yield and high linearity as a precursor of HMW poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), vinyl acetate (VAc) was emulsion polymerized using, azo initiator, 2,2′‐azobis(2‐amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH). This was compared with the polymerization using potassium peroxodisulfate (KPS) as an initiator at various polymerization conditions. PVA, having a maximum number average degree of polymerization (Pn) of 3500 was obtained by the saponification of PVAc with Pn of 13,000–14,000, degree of branching (DB) for the acetyl group of about 3.4–3.5, and a maximum conversion of VAc into PVAc of 95%, which was polymerized by AAPH. These numerical values were superior compared with 14,500–15,000 of Pn of PVAc, obtained by KPS, and 3100 of maximum Pn of resulting PVA, DB of about 3.7–3.8, and maximum conversion of 90%. From the foregoing experimental results, we found that AAPH was a more efficient initiator than KPS in increasing both conversion of PVAc and molecular weight of PVA. In addition, PVAc microspheres, obtained by these emulsion polymerizations, can be converted to PVA / PVAc shell / core microspheres through a series of surface‐saponifications, maintaining their spherical morphology. Various surface morphologies, such as flat or wrinkled and swellable or nonswellable ones formed by the various molecular parameters and saponification conditions, were examined. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reversible-addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization enabled the synthesis of novel, stimuli-responsive, AB and ABA block copolymers. The B block contained oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEG) and was permanently hydrophilic in the conditions examined. The A block consisted of diethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate (DEG) and [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (TMA). The A block displayed both salt- and temperature-response with lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) dependent on the molar content of TMA and the presence of salt. Higher TMA content in the AB diblock copolymers increased the critical micelle temperatures (CMT) in HPLC-grade water due to an increased hydrophilicity of the A block. Upon addition of 0.9 wt% NaCl, the CMTs of poly(OEG-b-DEG95TMA5) decreased from 50 °C to 36 °C due to screening of electrostatic repulsion between the TMA units. ABA triblock copolymers displayed excellent hydrogel properties with salt- and temperature-dependent gel points. TMA incorporation in the A block increased the gel points for all triblock copolymers, and salt-response increased with higher TMA composition in the A block. For example, poly(DEG98TMA2-b-OEG-b-DEG98TMA2) formed a hydrogel at 40 °C in HPLC-grade water and 26 °C in 0.9 wt% NaCl aqueous solution. These salt- and temperature-responsive AB diblock and ABA triblock copolymers find applications as drug delivery vehicles, adhesives, and hydrogels.  相似文献

The dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) has been carried out using polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) copolymer [P(S-b-4VP)], which was prepared by a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) method, as a steric stabilizer in an alcohol media. The stable polymer particles were obtained when the block copolymer concentrations increased from 1 to 10 wt% relative to the monomer and the average particle sizes decreased from 5.3 to 3.4 μm with the increasing concentration of the block copolymer. In particular, the incorporation of 2 wt% polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) produced 4.3 μm of monodisperse PMMA particles with 2.14% of Cv. Thus, the P(S-b-4VP) block copolymer prepared by the RAFT method is working not only as a steric stabilizer, but also in providing monodisperse micron-sized PMMA particles.  相似文献

Vinyl acetate (VAc) was solution‐polymerized in tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) and in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) having low chain transfer constant at 30, 40, and 50°C, using a low temperature initiator, 2,2′‐azobis(2,4‐dimethylvaleronitrile) (ADMVN). The effects of polymerization temperature and initiator concentration were investigated in terms of polymerization behavior and molecular structures of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and corresponding poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) obtained by saponification with sodium hydroxide. The polymerization rates of VAc in TBA and in DMSO were proportional to the 0.49 and 0.72 powers of ADMVN concentration, respectively. For the same polymerization conditions, TBA was absolutely superior to DMSO in increasing the molecular weight of PVA. In contrast, TBA was inferior to DMSO in causing conversion to polymer, indicating that the initiation rate of VAc in TBA was lower than that in DMSO. These effects could be explained by a kinetic order of ADMVN concentration calculated using initial rate method and by an activation energy difference of polymerization obtained from the Arrhenius plot. Low‐temperature solution polymerization of VAc in TBA or DMSO by adopting ADMVN proved successful in obtaining PVA of high molecular weight (number–average degree of polymerization (Pn): 4100–6100) and of high yield (ultimate conversion of VAc into PVAc: 55–80%) with diminishing heat generated during polymerization. In the case of bulk polymerization of VAc at the same conditions, maximum Pn and conversion of 5200–6200 and 20–30% was obtained, respectively. The Pn and lightness were higher, and the degree of branching was lower with PVA prepared from PVAc polymerized at lower temperatures in TBA. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. High-molecular weight (HMW) poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was prepared via an emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) using a redox initiation system in low temperatures, and the subsequent saponification with potassium hydroxide in methanol. The effect of the polymerization conditions on the conversion, molecular weight, and branching degree was investigated. PVA with maximum viscosity-average degree of polymerization (DP) of 8270 could be prepared by saponification of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc), with DP of 10,660 obtained at temperature of 10°C, monomer concentration of 30%, potassium persulfate molar ratio to monomer of 1/2000, agitation speed of 160 rpm. The conversion was above 90%. From the emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization of VAc in low temperature, PVAc with HMW and high linearity was effectively prepared, which might be useful for the preparation of high-strength and high-modulus PVA fiber. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The novel trifunctional reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent, tris(1-phenylethyl) 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl trithiocarbonate (TTA), was synthesized and used to prepare the three-armed polystyrene (PS3) via RAFT polymerization of styrene (St) in bulk with thermal initiation. The polymerization kinetic plot was first order and the molecular weights of polymers increased with the monomer conversions with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.23). The number of arms of the star PS was analyzed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) and fluorescence spectra. Furthermore, poly(styrene-b-N-isopropylacrylamide)3 (PS-b-PNIPAAM)3, the three-armed amphiphilic thermosensitive block copolymer, with controlled molecular weight and well-defined structure was also successfully prepared via RAFT chain extension method using the three-armed PS obtained as the macro-RAFT agent and N-isopropylacrylamide as the second monomer. The copolymers obtained were characterized by GPC and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. The self-assembly behaviors of the three-armed amphiphilic block copolymers (PS-b-PNIPAAM)3 in mixed solution (DMF/CH3OH) were also investigated by high performance particle sizer (HPPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Interestingly, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of aqueous solutions of the three-armed amphiphilic block copolymers (PS-b-PNIPAAM)3 decreased with the increase of relative length of PS in the block copolymers.  相似文献
