Posture, discomfort and performance in a VDT task   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Liao MH  Drury CG 《Ergonomics》2000,43(3):345-359
Improvements in workplace, working posture, and discomfort need to be justified in terms of improvements in performance. Previously, a visual inspection task has been investigated. The objective of the current study was to demonstrate the interactions between workplace, work duration, discomfort, working posture, as well as performance in a 2-h typing task. Three levels of keyboard heights were used to change working posture (e.g. joint angles and postural shifts), and thus presumably discomfort (e.g. rating of perceived discomfort and body part discomfort), and performance (e.g. typing speed, error rate and error correction rate). The results indicated that the hypothesized posture-comfort-performance interrelationships were partially supported. Keyboard height had effects on working posture adopted. As in previous studies, the rate of postural shift was a good indication of discomfort in a VDT task. Discomfort and postural shift rate had adverse effects on performance (e.g. error rate). However, these effects on error rate may not be strong.  相似文献

In a field study an adjustable VDT workstation was given to each of the 68 operators for one week. The preferred settings, the body postures and subjective evaluations were assessed during normal working activities of the operators. The preferred ranges disclose the following figures: keyboard height (home row above floor) 71-87 cm, screen height (centre above floor) 92-116 cm, viewing angles (eye to screen centre) + 2 to -26 degrees, visual distance (eye to screen) 61-93 cm. There was practically no correlation between preferred settings and anthropometric data of body length or eye levels above floor. The study of body postures revealed that the great majority of operators tend to lean backwards with trunk inclinations between 97 degrees and 121 degrees (95% confidence interval). Some of the preferred settings strongly differ from those recommended in many brochures and standards. The physical complaints in the neck-shoulder and back area are diminished with the preferred settings.  相似文献

The relationship of key force and keystroke rate with right-arm musculoskeletal discomfort and fatigue was explored in a video-display-terminal (VDT) data-entry task. Forty-three data transcribers entered bogus data from tax forms at a VDT for one workday with their right hand. Peak key force and keystroke rate were monitored on a continuous basis. Self-ratings of right-arm discomfort and fatigue were assessed at periodic intervals. Stepwise regression analyses indicated that both lower key forces and lower keystroke rates were associated with higher ratings of right-elbow discomfort. In addition, lower key forces were associated with higher ratings of right-hand discomfort and lower keystroke rates were associated with higher ratings of right-shoulder discomfort and fatigue. The amount of variance accounted for by these models ranged from 7 to 24%. These results appear to be contrary to conventional biomechanical models that postulate a positive association between key force, keystroke rate and musculoskeletal discomfort in VDT work. Further laboratory and field research under controlled conditions is needed to clarify the direction and extent of the cause-and-effect relationship between biomechanical factors and musculoskeletal discomfort in VDT data-entry work.  相似文献

This study evaluated the working postures, working conditions and musculoskeletal outcomes among different agricultural workers in Iran. Data were collected using questionnaires and direct observations of posture (using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment [RULA] method) from 377 farmers including 150 rice farmers, 122 vegetable growers, and 105 greenhouse workers. The overall prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms, particularly in the low back (75.1%), knees (62.1%), upper back (61.55%), and neck (59.9%) was very high, and 72.6% of farmers experienced more than three locations of pain/discomfort. The mean RULA grand score of 6.7 highlighted that most farmers needed immediate investigation and changes in their working postures. Being female (neck pain), occupation (rice farmers – low back pain), number of years worked as an agricultural worker (neck and knee pain), prolonged daily working hours (upper back pain), job satisfaction (neck and low back pain), fast working (upper back pain), and working postures (neck, upper back, low back and knee pain) were independently associated with the presence of musculoskeletal symptoms. These findings emphasise the need for multiple component interventions to improve the working conditions of this population.  相似文献

Microbreak length, performance, and stress in a data entry task   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effects of brief rest pauses on performance and well-being were evaluated for a highly repetitive, data entry task. Experienced data entry operators (N = 20) performed the task in a two-day experiment in a simulated office environment. Each day was divided into six, 40-min work periods. Subjects took a brief rest pause at the workstation (microbreak) in the middle of each work period. Subjects were instructed to terminate this microbreak when ready to resume work. Keystroke rate, error rate, correction rate, heart rate and heart rate variability were scored for each half of the work period. In addition, mood states before and during the work period were assessed. Microbreaks were found to average 27.4 s in duration. High ratings of fatigue and boredom during the work period were associated with longer microbreaks, suggesting that the break period was self-adjusted relative to mood state. In addition, correction rate and heart rate were lower following long microbreaks, implying that the degree of recovery was linked to the length of the microbreak. Comparison of keystroke output and correction rate before and after the microbreak, however, revealed that performance worsened after the microbreak, suggesting that subjects terminated microbreaks before complete recovery could occur.  相似文献

A cross-sectional study of task demands and musculoskeletal discomfort among a sample of 100 wait staff in ten casual dining restaurants was conducted. In addition to answering a questionnaire about musculoskeletal discomfort and symptoms experienced in the past 12 months and attributed to work, subjects were asked about various aspects of their jobs, such as shift length, number of shifts per week and safety training. The managers of the restaurants were also interviewed to gather basic information on factors such as work hours, alternative duty availability and safety practices. When asked to rank the three most important causes of injuries, the responses of both managers and wait staff were congruent with Bureau of Labor Statistics (USA) data for 1999 on the nature of injuries and attributed exposures, with slips and falls, musculoskeletal disorders and acute injuries (e.g. burns, cuts) highlighted. Of the 100 subjects, 42% reported experiencing musculoskeletal symptoms in the past year, with the lower back area (18%) and shoulder (11%) with the most frequent symptoms reported in the responses. Although many of the materials handling tasks were not excessive, the heavier tray lifts and carries are a cause for concern. There are also slip and fall issues that influence the risks of these tasks. Future research needs, including addressing the mismatch between more common materials handling assessment tools and the nature of food serving tasks, are discussed.  相似文献

The relationship between ergonomic demands and visual system complaints was investigated among video-display-terminal (VDT( operators at two state agencies. Ergonomic factors suspected of posing visual demands were objectively assessed at 40 data-entry workstations. A questionnaire survey was also administered to gather information on somatic discomfort, demographic and personal characteristics, and extent of VDT use for operators at these workstations, and for several hundred additional operators in the two agencies. Regression analyses indicated that personal factors such as age and use of corrective eyewear accounted for relatively little of the variance in measures of visual system complaints. However, regression models that incorporated viewing distance and illumination measures accounted for 38%-49% of the variance in these measures. The present investigation is one of the few attempts to assess objectively an array of physical workplace factors and to examine, within a multivariate framework, their influence on visual system complaints.  相似文献

Consideration of the literature survey indicates that video display terminal (VDT) operators tend to have a high incidence of musculoskeletal problems, visual fatigue, and job stress. Although a number of ergonomic improvements in workstation design and work environment can help to reduce these problems, a proper work-rest schedule deserves consideration since it is easily applicable and inexpensive. The objective of this study was to compare the work-rest schedules for VDT operators considering data entry and mental arithmetic tasks. An experiment was conducted with 10 male college students as participants. The methodology included a discomfort questionnaire and performance measures. The independent variables were the work-rest schedule (60-minute work/10-minute rest, 30-minute work/5-minute rest, and 15-minute work/micro breaks) and the type of task (data entry and a mental arithmetic task). The results were analysed using multiple analysis of variance followed by separate analyses. The 15/micro schedule resulted in significantly lower discomfort in the neck, lower back, and chest than the other schedules for data entry task. The 30/5 schedule followed by 15/micro schedule resulted in the lowest eyestrain and blurred vision. Discomfort in the elbow and arm was the lowest with the 15/micro schedule for the mental arithmetic task. The 15/micro schedule resulted in the highest speed, accuracy, and performance for both of the tasks, compared with the 60/10 and 30/5 schedules. The data entry task resulted in significantly increased speed, accuracy, and performance, and lower shoulder and chest discomfort than the mental arithmetic task.  相似文献

While using their smartphone, users tend to adopt awkward neck and shoulder postures for an extended duration. Such postures impose the risk of MSDs on those body parts. Numerous studies have been undertaken to examine neck posture; however, few studies have investigated shoulder postures. This study examined various shoulder postures during smartphone use and their effect on neck and shoulder kinematics, muscle loading, and neck/shoulder discomfort. Thirty-two asymptomatic young adult smartphone users randomly performed texting tasks for 3 min at four different shoulder flexion angles (15°, 30°, 45°, and 60°), while maintained a neck posture in the neutral position (0° neck flexion angle). Measures were taken of neck and shoulder muscle activity of the cervical erector spinae (CES), anterior deltoid (AD), upper trapezius (UT) and lower trapezius (LT), and kinematic data (angle, distance and gravitational moment). Results showed AD and LT muscle activity significantly increased when the shoulder flexion angle increased with an opposite effect on CES and UT. A recommended shoulder posture was identified as 30° flexion, as this yielded the best compromise between activation levels of the four muscles studied. This angle also induced the lowest neck/shoulder discomfort score. The findings suggest smartphone users hold their device at approximately 30° shoulder flexion angle with their neck in a neutral posture to reduce the risk of shoulder and neck musculoskeletal disorders when smartphone texting.Relevance to industrySmartphone use in the manufacturing and service industries is an integral part of work and useful means of communication tool. Awkward postures during extensive smartphone use impose an increased risk of both neck and shoulder musculoskeletal disorders. Shoulder flexion angles need consideration when making recommendations about safe work postures during smartphone use.  相似文献

Thirty trained female typists performed several consecutive l0min typing tasks on an adjustable VDT workstation. The experiments were conducted with preferred as well as with imposed settings. The body postures were determined during the typing tasks and the subjects filled out questionnaires at the end of the tasks.

The study discloses that the preferred workstation dimensions are associated with mainly 'relaxed' sensations, while imposed dimensions—even if they are similar to the mean values of preferred settings—cause an increased incidence of static load symptoms in the sense of increased tension or impairments in the neck-shoulder-arm-hand area. The preferred keyboard levels are mainly distinctly higher than those recommended in standards and brochures. A chair with a high backrest and a proper support to rest forearms and wrists are preconditions for the preferred postures at VDT workstations.  相似文献

Abstract

Subjective discomfort was recorded in a semi-paced laboratory experiment, where ten female subjects assembled (strenuous task) and disassembled (less strenuous task) pieces of water tubes. It was recorded five times during each session which lasted between 69 and 151 min and during five consecutive sessions. The subjects rated both the general discomfort and localization of the discomfort. The time course of the general discomfort showed an ascending trend and there were only minor differences between the strenuous and less strenuous task. The localization of the discomfort centralized to neck and shoulders and there was some inconsistency between the localization and the kinesiological analysis of the muscle activity. The results imply that the general discomfort rating is easily biased. The local discomfort rating seems to be more reliable for ergonomic purposes.  相似文献

At a VDU workstation professional touch-typing operators worked at eight different combined adjustments of visual target height and chair backrest inclination. Working posture, workers' perceptions and work performance were measured. Two conclusions were drawn. First, in order to minimize the load on the musculoskeletal system for touch-typing VDU operators, the gaze inclination to a visual target (screen, document) should be 6-9 degrees (range 0-15 degrees ) below the horizontal and, second, the gaze inclination recommended is independent of sitting posture (that is with the backrest between upright and 15 degrees inclined backwards).  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted to evaluate physical risk factors associated with the use of touchscreen in a desktop personal computer (PC) setting. Subjective rating of visual/body discomfort, shoulder and neck muscle activity, elbow movement and user-preferred positions of the workstation were quantified from 24 participants during a standardised computer use task with a standard keyboard and a mouse (traditional setting), with a touchscreen and the standard keyboard (mixed-use condition) and with the touchscreen only. The use of a touchscreen was associated with a significant increase of subjective discomfort on the shoulder, neck and fingers, myoelectric activity of shoulder and neck muscles and percentage of task duration that arms were in the air. Participants placed the touchscreen closer and lower when using touch interfaces compared with the traditional setting. Results suggest that users would need more frequent breaks and proper armrests to reduce physical risks associated with the use of a touchscreen in desktop PC settings.

Statement of Relevance: In this study, subjective discomfort, work posture and muscle activity of touchscreendesktop PC users were quantitatively evaluated. The findings of this study can be used to understand potential risksfrom the use of a touchscreen desktop PC and to suggest design recommendations for computer workstations with the touchscreen.  相似文献
