The pharmaceutical powder and tableting process is simulated using a combined finite‐discrete element method and contact dynamics for irregular‐shaped particles. The particle‐scale formulation and two‐stage contact detection algorithm which has been developed for the proposed method enhances the overall calculation efficiency for particle interaction characteristics. The irregular particle shapes and random sizes are represented as a pseudo‐particle assembly having a scaled up geometry but based on the variations of real powder particles. Our simulations show that particle size, shapes and material properties have a significant influence on the behaviour of compaction and deformation. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper improves the 16 degrees‐of‐freedom quadrilateral shell element based on pointwise Kirchhoff–Love constraints and introduces a consistent large strain formulation for this element. The model is based on classical shell kinematics combined with continuum constitutive laws. The resulting element is valid for large rotations and displacements. The degrees‐of‐freedom are the displacements at the corner nodes and one rotation at each mid‐side node. The formulation is free of enhancements, it is almost fully integrated and is found to be immune to locking or unstable modes. The patch test is satisfied. In addition, the formulation is simple and amenable to efficient incorporation in large‐scale codes as no internal degrees‐of‐freedom are employed, and the overall calculations are very efficient. Results are presented for linear and non‐linear problems. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A model for fracture and fragmentation of multilayered thin shells has been developed and implemented into the combined finite–discrete element code. The proposed model incorporates an extension of the original combined single and smeared fracture approach to multilayered thin shells; it then combines these with an interaction algorithm that is based on the original distributed potential contact force approach. The developed contact kinematics preserves both energy and momentum balance, whereas the developed fracture model is capable of modelling complex fracture patterns such as fracture of laminated glass under impact. Large‐scale discrete element simulations, the combined finite–discrete element method, DDA as well as a whole range of related methods, involve contact of a large number of separate bodies. In the context of the combined finite–discrete element method, each of these bodies is represented by a single discrete element which is then discretized into finite elements. The combined finite–discrete element method thus also involves algorithms dealing with fracture and fragmentation of individual discrete elements which result in ever changing topology and size of the problem. All these require complex algorithmic procedures and significant computational resources, especially in terms of CPU time. In this context, it is also necessary to have an efficient and robust algorithm for handling mechanical contact. In this work, a contact algorithm based on the penalty function method and incorporating contact kinematics preserving energy balance, is proposed and implemented into the combined finite element code. Large‐scale discrete element simulations, combined finite‐discrete element simulations as well as a whole range of related problems, involve a large number of separate bodies that interact with each other and in general deform and fracture. In this context there is a need for a robust fracture algorithm applicable to simultaneous multiple fracturing of large numbers of bodies. In this work a fracture model for both initiation and propagation of mode I loaded cracks in concrete in the context of the combined finite‐discrete element method is reported. The algorithm is based on accurate approximation of experimental stress–strain curves for concrete in tension. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The Newmark method for the numerical integration of second order equations has been extensively used and studied along the past fifty years for structural dynamics and various fields of mechanical engineering. Easy implementation and nice properties of this method and its derivatives for linear problems are appreciated but the main drawback is the treatment of discontinuities. Zienkiewicz proposed an approach using finite element concept in time, which allows a new look at the Newmark method. The idea of this paper is to propose, thanks to this approach, the use of a time partition of the unity method denoted Time Extended Finite Element Method (TX‐FEM) for improved numerical simulations of time discontinuities. An enriched basis of shape functions in time is used to capture with a good accuracy the non‐polynomial part of the solution. This formulation allows a suitable form of the time‐stepping formulae to study stability and energy conservation. The case of an enrichment with the Heaviside function is developed and can be seen as an alternative approach to time discontinuous Galerkin method (T‐DGM), stability and accuracy properties of which can be derived from those of the TX‐FEM. Then Space and Time X‐FEM (STX‐FEM) are combined to obtain a unified space–time discretization. This combined STX‐FEM appears to be a suitable technique for space–time discontinuous problems like dynamic crack propagation or other applications involving moving discontinuities. A new method to track massless particles in a three‐dimensional flow field is presented. The method is based on an element‐by‐element approach coupled with a predictor–corrector shooting scheme and does not use any time step. By analogy with time‐dependent schemes, the number of shootings is related to an equivalent number of time steps. The method has been implemented in a finite element framework using unstructured tetrahedral finite element meshes. However, it is general enough so that it can be implemented in finite difference and finite volume frameworks as well. It has been tested on a variety of flow systems namely: the Poiseuille flow in an empty circular pipe, the rotating flow in a stirred tank, the shear flow in a square tank and the flow through a static mixer. Accuracy has been found to depend on the accuracy of the velocity computation, the number of points per element and the level of mesh refinement. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

When applying the combined finite‐discrete element method for analysis of dynamic problems, contact is often encountered between the finite elements and discrete elements, and thus an effective contact treatment is essential. In this paper, an accurate and robust contact detection algorithm is proposed to resolve contact problems between spherical particles, which represent rigid discrete elements, and convex quadrilateral mesh facets, which represent finite element boundaries of structural components. Different contact scenarios between particles and mesh facets, or edges, or vertices have been taken into account. For each potential contact pair, the contact search is performed in an hierarchical way starting from mesh facets, possibly going to edges and even further to vertices. The invalid contact pairs can be removed by means of two reasonable priorities defined in terms of geometric primitives and facet identifications. This hierarchical contact searching scheme is effective, and its implementation is straightforward. Numerical examples demonstrated the accuracy and robustness of the proposed algorithm. It is well known that the finite element method (FEM) suffers severely from the volumetric locking problem for incompressible materials in topology optimization owing to its numerical ‘overly stiff’ property. In this article, two typical smoothed FEMs with a certain softened effect, namely the node-based smoothed finite element method (NS-FEM) and the cell-based smoothed finite element method, are formulated to model the compressible and incompressible materials for topology optimization. Numerical examples have demonstrated that the NS-FEM with an ‘overly soft’ property is fairly effective in tackling the volumetric locking problem in topology optimization when both compressible and incompressible materials are involved.  相似文献

In this paper, a two‐dimensional displacement‐based meshfree‐enriched FEM (ME‐FEM) is presented for the linear analysis of compressible and near‐incompressible planar elasticity. The ME‐FEM element is established by injecting a first‐order convex meshfree approximation into a low‐order finite element with an additional node. The convex meshfree approximation is constructed using the generalized meshfree approximation method and it possesses the Kronecker‐delta property on the element boundaries. The gradient matrix of ME‐FEM element satisfies the integration constraint for nodal integration and the resultant ME‐FEM formulation is shown to pass the constant stress test for the compressible media. The ME‐FEM interpolation is an element‐wise meshfree interpolation and is proven to be discrete divergence‐free in the incompressible limit. To prevent possible pressure oscillation in the near‐incompressible problems, an area‐weighted strain smoothing scheme incorporated with the divergence‐free ME‐FEM interpolation is introduced to provide the smoothing on strains and pressure. With this smoothed strain field, the discrete equations are derived based on a modified Hu–Washizu variational principle. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for the compressible and near‐incompressible problems. In the conventional displacement‐based finite element analysis of composite beam–columns that consist of two Euler–Bernoulli beams juxtaposed with a deformable shear connection, the coupling of the transverse and longitudinal displacement fields may cause oscillations in slip field and reduction in optimal convergence rate, known as slip locking. This locking phenomenon is typical of multi‐field problems of this type, and is known to produce erroneous results for the displacement‐based finite element analysis of composite beam–columns based on cubic transverse and linear longitudinal interpolation fields. This paper introduces strategies including the assumed strain method, discrete strain gap method, and kinematic interpolatory technique to alleviate the oscillations in slip and curvature, and improve the convergence performance of the displacement‐based finite element analysis of composite beam–columns. A systematic solution of the differential equations of equilibrium is also provided, and a superconvergent element is developed in this paper. Numerical results presented illustrate the accuracy of the proposed modifications. The solutions based on the superconvergent element provide benchmark results for the performance of these proposed formulations. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new contact search algorithm (InsideOutside Algorithm) for the sheet forming simulation has been developed and implemented in the dynamic explicit FE code: ‘DYNAMIC’. The insideoutside algorithm is derived based on the feature of the inside–outside status of a nodal ‘mesh normal vector’ in respect to a surface segment for the judgment of the contact of FE nodes with the tool surface. This new algorithm includes local search, local track and penetration calculation processes. Almost no additional CPU time is required for the local search process, because the calculations for both global and local search are combined. Moreover, the problems of conventional contact searching algorithms, such as iterations for local search and the deadzone problem, are resolved. Therefore, the quick, robust contact searching and accurate evaluation of penetration have been achieved. The numerical results show that the new contact searching algorithm is more cost effective and robust than conventional ones. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The presence of the pressure and the convection terms in incompressible Navier–Stokes equations makes their numerical simulation a challenging task. The indefinite system as a consequence of the absence of the pressure in continuity equation is ill‐conditioned. This difficulty has been overcome by various splitting techniques, but these techniques incur the ambiguity of numerical boundary conditions for the pressure as well as for the intermediate velocity (whenever introduced). We present a new and straightforward discrete splitting technique which never resorts to numerical boundary conditions. The non‐linear convection term can be treated by four different approaches, and here we present a new linear implicit time scheme. These two new techniques are implemented with a finite element method and numerical verifications are made. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Adaptive algorithms are important tools for efficient finite‐element mesh design. In this paper, an error controlled adaptive mesh‐refining algorithm is proposed for a non‐conforming low‐order finite‐element method for the Reissner–Mindlin plate model. The algorithm is controlled by a reliable and efficient residual‐based a posteriori error estimate, which is robust with respect to the plate's thickness. Numerical evidence for this and the efficiency of the new algorithm is provided in the sense that non‐optimal convergence rates are optimally improved in our numerical experiments. This paper presents a new arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) finite element formulation for finite strain plasticity in non‐linear solid mechanics. We consider the models of finite strain plasticity defined by the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient in an elastic and a plastic part ( F = F e F p), with the stresses given by a hyperelastic relation. In contrast with more classical ALE approaches based on plastic models of the hypoelastic type, the ALE formulation presented herein considers the direct interpolation of the motion of the material with respect to the reference mesh together with the motion of the spatial mesh with respect to this same reference mesh. This aspect is shown to be crucial for a simple treatment of the advection of the plastic internal variables and dynamic variables. In fact, this advection is carried out exactly through a particle tracking in the reference mesh, a calculation that can be accomplished very efficiently with the use of the connectivity graph of the fixed reference mesh. A staggered scheme defined by three steps (the smoothing, the advection and the Lagrangian steps) leads to an efficient method for the solution of the resulting equations. We present several representative numerical simulations that illustrate the performance of the newly proposed methods. Both quasi‐static and dynamic conditions are considered in these model examples. An alternative approach for developing practical large‐strain finite elements has been introduced and used to create a three‐dimensional solid element that exhibits no locking or hourglassing, but which is more easily and reliably derived and implemented than typical reduced‐integration schemes with hourglassing control. Typical large‐strain elements for forming applications rely on reduced integration to remove locking modes that occur with the coarse meshes that are necessary for practical use. This procedure introduces spurious zero‐energy deformation modes that lead to hourglassing, which in turn is controlled by complex implementations that involve lengthy derivations, knowledge of the material model, and/or undetermined parameters. Thus, for a new material or new computer program, implementation of such elements is a daunting task. Wang–Wagoner‐3‐dimensions (WW3D), a mixed, hexahedral, three‐dimensional solid element, was derived from the standard linear brick element by ignoring the strain components corresponding to locking modes while maintaining full integration (8 Gauss points). Thus, WW3D is easily implemented for any material law, with little chance of programming error, starting from programming for a readily available linear brick element. Surprisingly, this approach and resulting element perform similarly or better than standard solid elements in a series of numerical tests appearing in the literature. The element was also tested successfully for an applied sheet‐forming analysis problem. Many variations on the scheme are also possible for deriving special‐purpose elements. This paper reports a numerical method for modelling the elastic wave propagation in plates. The method is based on the partition of unity approach, in which the approximate spectral properties of the infinite dimensional system are embedded within the space of a conventional finite element method through a consistent technique of waveform enrichment. The technique is general, such that it can be applied to the Lagrangian family of finite elements with specific waveform enrichment schemes, depending on the dominant modes of wave propagation in the physical system. A four‐noded element for the Reissner–Mindlin plate is derived in this paper, which is free of shear locking. Such a locking‐free property is achieved by removing the transverse displacement degrees of freedom from the element nodal variables and by recovering the same through a line integral and a weak constraint in the frequency domain. As a result, the frequency‐dependent stiffness matrix and the mass matrix are obtained, which capture the higher frequency response with even coarse meshes, accurately. The steps involved in the numerical implementation of such element are discussed in details. Numerical studies on the performance of the proposed element are reported by considering a number of cases, which show very good accuracy and low computational cost. The equation of state for expansion of detonation gas together with a model for gas flow through fracturing solid is proposed and implemented into the combined finite‐discrete element code. The equation of state proposed enables gas pressure to be obtained in a closed form for both reversible and irreversible adiabatic expansion, while the gas flow model proposed considers only 1D compressible flow through cracks, hence avoiding full 2D or 3D gas flow through the fracturing solid. When coupled with finite‐discrete element algorithms for solid fracture and fragmentation, the model proposed enables gas pressure to be predicted and energy balance to be preserved. We propose a new discrete element method supporting general polyhedral meshes. The method can be understood as a lowest-order discontinuous Galerkin method parametrized by the continuous mechanical parameters (Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio). We consider quasistatic and dynamic elastoplasticity, and in the latter situation, a pseudoenergy conserving time-integration method is employed. The computational cost of the time-stepping method is moderate since it is explicit and used with a naturally diagonal mass matrix. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the robustness and versatility of the method for quasistatic and dynamic elastoplastic evolutions.  相似文献

A general algorithmic framework is established in this paper for numerical simulations of three‐dimensional fluid–particle interaction problems with a large number of moving particles in turbulent flows using a combined lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and discrete element method (DEM). In this approach, the fluid field is solved by the extended three‐dimensional LBM with the incorporation of the Smagorinsky turbulence model, while particle interactions are modelled by the DEM. The hydrodynamic interactions between fluid and particles are realized through the extension of an existing two‐dimensional fluid–particle hydrodynamic interaction scheme. The main computational aspects comprise the lattice Boltzmann formulation for the solution of fluid flows, the incorporation of a large eddy simulation‐based turbulence model within the framework of the three‐dimensional LBM for turbulent flows, the moving boundary condition for hydrodynamic interactions between fluid and moving particles, and the discrete element modelling of particle‐particle interactions. To assess the solution accuracy of the proposed approach, a much simplified laboratory model of vacuum dredging systems for mineral recovery is employed. The numerical results are compared with the experimental data available. It shows that the overall correspondence between numerical results and experimental measurements is good and thus indicates, to a certain extent, the solution accuracy of the proposed methodology.
