BACKGROUND: The influence of farming systems on fruit quality remains controversial and the different aspects associated with each agricultural management system need to be studied separately to elucidate any specific effect on fruit quality. To this end, a greenhouse experiment was conducted to examine the effect of the usual fertilisation guidelines for pepper cultivation on the nutritional quality of fruits (sugars, vitamin C, total phenolic compounds, chlorophylls, total carotenoids and antioxidant activities in the hydrophilic (HAA) and lipophilic (LAA) fractions). Treatments included manure amendment combined with synthetic fertiliser applied at the rates recommended for organic (T1), low‐input (T2) and conventional (T3) practices. RESULTS: Pepper composition was not affected by increasing mineral fertilisation. In addition, treatment had no significant effect on HAA or LAA. The antioxidant activity of both the hydrophilic and lipophilic fractions increased from the green to the red stage of ripening. HAA contributed about 80% of the total antioxidant activity. CONCLUSION: Pepper response to mineral fertilisation seems to be less pronounced than that of other fruits, since antioxidant concentrations did not increase with increasing fertiliser application. Antioxidant activity in pepper was mainly linked to hydrophilic compounds (vitamin C and phenolic compounds). Ripening was the most important factor determining the fruit antioxidant composition. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of the cropping system (organic or conventional) and the growth medium (soil or soilless) on the antioxidant content of peppers from Almuden and Quito cultivars. This cultivation study complements a previous farm study. For both cultivars, organic cultivation led to higher fruit lipophilic antioxidant content than conventional management but differences in the hydrophilic fraction were not observed. The effect of the growth medium on pepper composition depended on the studied cultivar. In Almuden, neither the hydrophilic nor the lipophilic fractions were affected by the growth medium, while in Quito most compounds showed higher values in soil-grown plants. Taking into account the results from the present and the previous farm study we conclude that the effect of organic vs. conventional cultivation on pepper quality can be attributed to the different nutritional regimes and other factors associated with the agricultural system. However, both aspects are not necessarily different in organic and conventional commercial crops. The effect of the growth medium (soil or soilless) on pepper quality depended on the cultivar: Almuden was not affected by the growth medium and Quito was seen to be less suitable for soilless cultivation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: A challenge in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) breeding for organic farming is to provide high‐yielding cultivars with appropriate baking qualities under the limiting conditions of organic fertiliser input and without the use of pesticides. Cultivars are usually tested on organic and conventional farms. However, field properties may differ owing to spatial variations of soils and microclimate heterogeneity. In this study, old, organically bred and conventionally bred cultivars were tested in organic and conventional farming systems of the DOK long‐term system comparison trial. RESULTS: Effects of cultivars and systems on yield and quality parameters were statistically significant. Genotype × system interactions were generally not observed. Grain yield across all cultivars increased from 4.2 Mg ha?1 under organic conditions up to 6.8 Mg ha?1 under conventional conditions, with protein contents of 90 and 117 g kg?1 respectively. Conventionally bred cultivars yielded significantly more under conventional conditions than organically bred cultivars, whereas neither organically nor conventionally bred cultivars performed better under organic conditions. CONCLUSION: Breeding for yield was successful, but only under high‐input conditions, where these successes were accompanied by rising inputs of external resources. The results of this study suggest that cultivar testing in long‐term system comparisons can complement standard on‐farm testing. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Fruits of processing and nonprocessing tomato cultivars harvested at the “breaker” stage of maturity were evaluated for changes in physical, chemical and sensory quality characteristics during storage at 20C and 30C after 7, 14 and 21 days. Percentage marketable fruits after 21 days at 20C and 30C were 61.9% and 56.6% for processing cultivars and 65.9% and 50.9% for nonprocessing cultivars. Fruits of the processing cultivars ripened earlier, remained firmer and were less prone to physical injuries than fruits of nonprocessing cultivars. Nonprocessing fruits had a higher mean fruit weight of 17.0 g, fruit diameter of 1.10 mm and locule number of 13 compared with fruits of the processing cultivars. Nonprocessing fruit cultivars had higher sugar/acid ratios and vitamin C contents as well as lower pH and total titratable acidity than processing fruit cultivars. Accordingly, nonprocessing cultivars on the whole, but specifically Walters, Floradel, Carnival, Calypso, Star Pak, Floradade and Early Set were most suitable as fresh-market fruits. Excellent processing quality attributes were obtained for Donore, Peto 94C, Rio Grande and Advantage. Among processing cultivars Caraibe, Cascade, Dorado and Neema 1401 gave good dual purpose fruits.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) are widely consumed and well known for their health benefits, many of which have been associated with the high levels of antioxidants present in tomatoes. With a growing interest in local and organic foods, it would be helpful to determine whether farmers could naturally improve the quality and antioxidant content of tomatoes for sale in local markets. This study evaluated antioxidant properties, quality attributes, and yield for 10 tomato cultivars grown for 2 years using certified organic and conventional practices. RESULTS: Cultivar and year effects impacted (P < 0.05) all tests conducted, while growing method influenced (P < 0.05) yield, soluble solids content, ascorbic acid, and antioxidant radical scavenging capacity. Even when accounting for year‐to‐year variability, cultivars in the highest groups had 1.35‐ to 1.67‐fold higher antioxidant levels than cultivars in the lowest groups. ‘New Girl’, ‘Jet Star’, ‘Fantastic’, and ‘First Lady’ were always in the highest groups, while ‘Roma’ and ‘Early Girl’ consistently had the lowest antioxidant content. CONCLUSION: Compared to production practices and environmental effects of years that are generally beyond the control of small‐scale producers, choice of cultivar provides the simplest and most effective means of increasing antioxidant properties. Knowledge of tomato cultivars with naturally higher antioxidant levels could assist smaller‐scale producers to grow fruit that may provide a competitive advantage and the opportunity to capitalize on the increasing popularity of locally grown, high‐quality fresh produce. BACKGROUND: The impact of organic and conventional production systems on quality and nutritional parameters of fruits and vegetables is still under discussion. The objective of this study is to determine whether the production system has a significant effect on the quality and nutritional content of one variety of processing tomatoes grown on a commercial scale by comparing three different growers for two production years. RESULTS: Conventional tomatoes appeared to be more mature at time of harvest as determined by visual inspection of color. Total and soluble solids were significantly higher and consistency was greater in organic tomatoes. Differences in nutrient content were not statistically significant between production systems. Glutamate, glutamine, and tyrosine levels were significantly higher in conventional tomatoes, as were total nitrogen and ammonium concentrations. CONCLUSION: Results from this study show that nutritional and quality parameters vary greatly by grower, production system, and year for the same tomato cultivar. Significantly higher average soluble solids content and consistency in organic tomatoes are especially important to the processing tomato industry. The apparent slower development of organic tomatoes may be responsible for many of the significant findings in this study and may explain some of the conflicting reports in previous literature. BACKGROUND: The use of organic cultivation with manures does not avoid the risk of high nitrate concentrations if nutrient management is inefficient. So we studied the influence of three organic manures combined or not with additional chemical fertilisers on growth and yield of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), and on the soil and plant N concentrations. RESULTS: After 3 years of organic cultivation, poultry manure caused the highest soil pollution. The evolution of nitrate and organic matter in soil showed a pattern close to that of plant growth. The addition of mineral fertiliser increased vegetative growth and yield, and a cumulative season effect was observed. In treatments with no additional mineral fertiliser N translocation from leaves to fruits happened. A cumulative effect of seasons on fruit quality and a reduction near to 30% was observed in the first fruit quality category after 3 years. The fruit vitamin C content was reduced by increasing N fertilisation. CONCLUSION: The effects of organic fertiliser on soil and plant growth and yield depended on the type of manure used, its rate, and consecutive crop seasons. Horse manure gave the best combination of agricultural and environmental characteristics and could be used without additional fertigation. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The objective of this work was to study the influence of irrigation and organic fertilisation on quality attributes of tomato fruit (cv. Nautilus) grown for the canning industry. The assay was carried out during two consecutive years (2006 and 2007) in agricultural soil. Nine treatments resulting from the combination of three fertilisation types (sheep manure, a mixture of sheep manure and peat and an inorganic fertiliser (control)) with three levels of drip irrigation (3.30, 5.00 and 6.70 mm day?1) under black polyethylene mulch were applied (n = 3). RESULTS: For the chromatic attributes L*, H*, C* and S* the highest values corresponded to the treatments with organic matter. However, the a*/b* ratio and colour index value were higher for the control treatment. In all cases the estimated optimal ripening time was the same, and on this date a decline in the ratios was observed. The values of the physical properties increased with increasing irrigation, higher values always being obtained in the treatments with organic fertilisers. The highest production for all irrigation levels corresponded to the treatment with mixed sheep manure and peat fertiliser. CONCLUSION: Cultivation involving fertilisation with the manure/peat mixture and an irrigation level slightly above 5.00 mm day?1 can be recommended as optimal, since it gave the most satisfactory values with respect to the quality attributes of tomato fruit grown for the canning industry. Enriching the micronutrients, selenium (Se) and lithium (Li), in grapes to improve their nutraceutical properties were implemented by foliar application of organic fertiliser rich in Se and Li onto five grape cultivars. The effects of this biofortification on vine vigour, fruit quality, overall micronutrients and phenolic compounds also were investigated. Agronomic biofortification was found greatly increased the Se and Li content in the whole grape by multiple times, meanwhile it did not significantly affect the vine vigour and fruit quality of grapes. However, the biofortification did impact the Ionome (including all the mineral nutrients and trace elements) and phenolic compounds in grapes and this varied among cultivars. This study demonstrated foliar spray of organic Se/Li fertiliser was a very effective strategy to biofortify these micronutrients in grape berries, particularly in the skin, and therefore might be a promising strategy to increase the consumption and awareness of these grapes.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Two different tomato scions, cv. Elazig and cv. Sweet (cherry) (Solanum lycopersicum L.) were self‐grafted and grafted onto tobacco root stock (Nicotiana tobacum L.). Then, grafted tomato plants were evaluated in terms of flower and fruit yield. Tobacco‐grafted tomato plant fruits were also evaluated for nicotine content. RESULTS: Tobacco grafting had a positive effect on the tomato plant cultivation performance; the onset of flowering was almost 15 days earlier and the tomato flower and fruit yields increased in both tomato cultivars. Tobacco grafting resulted in 5.0% and 30.1% increase in total fruit weight for cv. Sweet and cv. Elazig, respectively. Because the level of nicotine was within acceptable ranges, tobacco‐grafted tomato fruits were considered to be safe for consumption. Self‐grafted tomato cultivars also had flowering time onsets almost 11 days earlier. However, self‐grafting caused 6.0% and 7.6% less total fruit yield per cv. Sweet and cv. Elazig, respectively. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, our results show that tomato–tobacco grafting is a novel and promising technique for improvement of not only tomato plant performance and yield, but also that it can be employed to various tomato varieties. BACKGROUND: Two important quality attributes of processing tomatoes are pH and titratable acidity. These and other quality attributes can be affected by tomato fruit maturity and over‐maturity. We have determined the magnitude of these maturity effects in four processing tomato cultivars commonly grown in California. RESULTS: Allowing tomatoes to remain on the vine for up to 4 weeks after ripening resulted in an increase in fruit pH of between 0.01 and 0.02 unit per day for the four cultivars examined. The increase in pH was paralleled by a decrease in titratable acidity, due to a loss of citric acid. Glucose and fructose concentrations also declined with increasing maturity after ripening. Other quality parameters (color, lycopene, total pectin, pectin solubility, and Bostwick consistency) all showed little change. CONCLUSION: Vine holding of ripe fruit adversely affects quality, especially pH and titratable acidity. Recent problems with high tomato juice pH encountered by tomato processors in California could be the result of increased average fruit maturity at harvest. Fruit of four eastern tomato cultivars (cvs) were peeled using either high pressure steam or a lye bath under commercial conditions. Percent yield of whole fruit and finished product quality were determined. Yield of 5 sec steam-peeled fruit was 4.1% greater than lye-peeled fruit; no cvs differences were detected. Quantity of blossom-end peel was not affected by peel treatment, but differences among cvs were shown. Steam-peeled tomatoes averaged 6.2 cm2 and lye-peeled < 1 cm2 total peel/can. There were no differences among treatments or cvs in sensory color scores. Differences in surface bL/a values among cvs at the equator region of fruit were found. Although recovery was greater for steam-peeled than for lye-peeled fruit, canned product quality was better for lye-peeled fruit.  相似文献

The fruit quality parameters of several Japanese plum cultivars (Prunus salicina Lindl) were studied in two experimental orchards under organic and conventional management. The study was performed during 2008–2010 in the province of Seville (SW Spain). Colour, weight, size, firmness, soluble solid concentration and acidity were measured for fruit quality evaluation. Yield was also determined. In general, the organic fruit was of smaller size and weight. There was little difference in the colour of most of the varieties, but some varieties such as ‘Friar’ and ‘Black Amber’ were more colourful in the organic orchard. The soluble solid concentration and acidity were similar in the fruit from both orchards. The organic plums showed firmness equal to or slightly greater than conventional ones. Dry matter and nitrites were analysed in 2010, and no significant differences were observed in most of the varieties. The accumulated fruit yield was significantly superior in the conventionally managed orchard.  相似文献

Three strawberry cultivars (Dover, Campineiro, and Oso Grande), grown in the same commercial plantation, were harvested at the ripe stage and stored at 6, 16 and 25 °C, for 6 days. During this period, chemical composition and antioxidant activity were evaluated. Results showed an increase in total soluble sugars, anthocyanin and vitamin C contents, indicating that a new biosynthesis had taken place during storage. Low temperature negatively affected anthocyanin and vitamin C accumulation, and positively affected soluble sugars, while flavonols, ellagic acid and total phenolic contents remained almost the same or even decreased at all temperatures. Despite differences in anthocyanin content between varieties and its increase during storage (higher with increasing temperature), there was no difference in the antioxidant activity between cultivars, which decreased after harvesting, independently of the temperature of storage. Variations in the proportion dehydroascorbic acid/ascorbic acid (DHA/AA) showed that there were differences between cultivars concerning adaptation of the fruit to low temperatures. The data obtained here indicate that cold storage is an effective way to maintain strawberry quality, but a compromise between sensorial and nutritional values can be achieved at 16 °C, for all the cultivars.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the effects of fruit ripening stage on the physico-chemical properties and nutritional contents of three greenhouse grown tomato cultivars (‘Monika’, ‘Isabella’ and ‘Cherry’). Significant changes (p?≤?0.05) occurred in fruit colour, total soluble solids, protein, fibre, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and lycopene content at different stages of ripening. ‘Cherry’ tomato contained significantly (p?≤?0.05) higher total soluble sugar and several nutrients including fibre. However, the plum-type tomato cultivars (‘Monika’ and ‘Isabella’) contained higher vitamin C and lycopene than ‘Cherry’ tomato. In all tomato cultivars, it was found that up to 50% of final lycopene content occurred during the final phase (from red to deep red colour) of fruit ripening.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The potato can make a significant contribution of antioxidants to the human diet. In this study, antioxidant levels in tubers of 14 specialty potato clones grown at four production sites (two conventional, two organic), both fresh and stored, were examined across 2 years. RESULTS: Antioxidant activity of fresh tubers at all locations was higher in 2006 than in 2005. Cooler late‐season temperatures in 2006 may have been responsible for the increased levels of antioxidants. Stored tubers had higher levels of antioxidant activity than fresh tubers, with a larger storage effect in 2005, when antioxidant levels in fresh tubers were lower. There was no consistent effect of production system (organic versus conventional) on antioxidant activity in tubers. CONCLUSION: For the specialty potato clones we evaluated, antioxidant levels were generally highest in potatoes grown in high‐yielding production environments, and they increased during storage. Therefore, potatoes with high nutritional value, in terms of antioxidant activity, can be produced using conventional production and storage systems. The present study aims to compare the phenolic and hydrophilic antioxidant profiles of organically and conventionally produced tomato juices. Comparisons of analyses of archived samples from conventional and organic production systems demonstrated statistically higher levels (P < 0.05) of phenolic compounds in organic tomato juices. This increase corresponds not only with increasing amounts of soil organic matter accumulating in organic plots but also with reduced manure application rates once soils in the organic systems had reached equilibrium levels of organic matter. Using principal component analysis, results show that phenolic compounds and hydrophilic antioxidant capacity were responsible for the differentiation between organic and conventional tomato juices. Thus, there appear to be genuine differences in the bioactive components of organic and conventional tomato juices not previously reported.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:  Consumers of organically grown fruits and vegetables often believe that these products taste better than conventional produce. However, comparison of produce from supermarket shelves does not permit adequate assessment of this consumer perception, given potentially confounding cultivar and environmental effects. We used replicated side-by-side plots to produce organic and conventional vegetables for consumer sensory studies. In one test, red loose leaf lettuce, spinach, arugula, and mustard greens, grown organically and conventionally, were evaluated for overall liking as well as for intensity of flavor and bitterness. Another consumer test was conducted comparing organically and conventionally grown tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions. Overall, organically and conventionally grown vegetables did not show significant differences in consumer liking or consumer-perceived sensory quality. The only exception was in tomatoes where the conventionally produced tomato was rated as having significantly stronger flavor than the organically produced tomato. However, overall liking was the same for both organic and conventional samples. As conventional tomatoes also were scored marginally significantly higher in ripeness and a positive correlation was found between ratings of flavor intensity and ripeness, the flavor difference observed could not be simply ascribed to the contrasting growing conditions. Consumer panelists in both tests considered organic produce to be healthier (72%) and more environmentally friendly (51%) than conventional produce, while 28% considered organic produce to have better taste. Covariance analysis indicated that consumer demographics affected sensory comparisons of organic and conventional lettuce and cucumbers. Future study is needed to substantiate the influence of segmentation of consumers on their preference for organic food.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Cherry tomato fruits cv. Micro‐Tom, a model plant for tomato genetics, were analysed in order to determine the main structural and chemical changes under optimal and chilling storage conditions. The comparison of Micro‐Tom to standard tomato cultivars will give an insight into suitability of this dwarf cultivar as a model for studying the influence of low‐temperature conditions on tomato fruits. RESULTS: During chilling, fruit tissue was progressively destroyed due to the collapse of the deep layers of the pericarp. Chilling lowered the typical tomato kinetics of ripening in sugars (glucose, fructose, sucrose), organic acids (tartaric, malic, citric, ascorbic and succinic) and the antioxidants phenol and lycopene, while carotenoid synthesis seemed to be blocked. Glutathione level was elevated and the activity of ROS scavenging enzymes was altered. Essentially, Micro‐Tom fruits showed a quality evolution that was similar to that described for standard tomato cultivars. CONCLUSION: The cherry tomato cultivar Micro‐Tom could be used as a model for studying the influence of low temperature on biochemical and structural changes taking place during chilling injury conditions.
