BACKGROUND: For organic farming, cultivars are required with high nutrient use efficiency under nutrient limited conditions. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are known to contribute to nutrient uptake under low input conditions. We compared nutrient use efficiency (NUE) of old and modern organically and conventionally bred cultivars in organic and conventional systems and assessed AMF‐root colonisation (AMF‐RC) in relation to nutrient concentrations. RESULTS: Cultivars and systems had a statistically significant effect on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations and NUE parameters, whereas no genotype × environment interactions appeared. In contrast to N and P uptake, the NUE parameters were higher under organic than under conventional conditions. NUE for N increased with the year of release of cultivars. In the organic systems, the organically bred cultivars could not outperform the conventionally bred cultivars in grain yield and NUE parameters. AMF‐RC was higher in the organic than in the conventional system, but did not differ among cultivars. CONCLUSION: Cultivars achieving high NUE in the organic systems were found among modern cultivars, irrespective of the breeding programme. Nutrient conditions during the breeding programme did not affect AMF‐RC. BACKGROUND: Lactuca sativa L. ssp. acephala L., cv. Batavia red Mohican plants were cultivated under intensive conventional, organic and biodynamic farming and were analyzed for their polyphenol content and antiradical activity in order to demonstrate the influence of farming on yield, polyphenol content and antiradical activity. RESULTS: The yield of plants from conventional farming was the highest (2.89 kg m?2), while polyphenol content, measured by spectrophotometry, of these plants was lower at P < 0.05 (1.36 mg g?1) than the content of plants from organic and biodynamic farming (1.74 and 1.85 mg g?1, respectively). The antiradical activity, measured by DPPH · assay, was positively correlated to flavonoid and hydroxycinnamic acid contents. CONCLUSION: Flavonoid, hydroxycinnamic acid and anthocyan patterns were not affected by the type of cultivation, while quantitative differences were demonstrated and some differences were found between conventional farming and organic or biodynamic farming. BACKGROUND: Nitrate leaching and the resulting groundwater contamination from intensive cereal production has become a major concern for long‐term farmland efficiency and environmental sustainability in northern China. The aim of this study was to evaluate a water‐saving super‐absorbent polymer (SAP) for minimising NO3? leaching from soil and optimising corn growth and yield. Thirty‐six undisturbed soil lysimeters were installed in a field lysimeter facility in drought‐affected northern China to study the growth and yield characteristics of summer corn (Zea mays L.) as well as the amount of NO3–leaching losses under different fertiliser (standard, medium or 75% and low, or 50% of conventional fertilisation rate) and SAP (control, 0; level‐1, 15 kg ha?1 and level‐2, 30 kg ha?1) treatments. RESULTS: Corn yield fell by 19.7% under medium and 37.7% under low fertilisation; the application of SAP increased yield significantly by 44.4% on level‐1 and 80.3% on level‐2. Similarly, plant height, leaf area, number of grains as well as protein, soluble sugar and starch contents in the grain also increased with SAP treatment. Application of SAP at 30 kg ha?1 plus half of conventional fertilisation can reduce maximum (64.1%) nitrate leaching losses from soil. CONCLUSIONS: Application of SAP at 30 kg ha?1 plus only half the amount of conventional fertiliser rate (150 kg urea, and 50 kg each of superphosphate and potassium sulfate) would be a more appropriate practice both for minimising nitrate leaching and sustainable corn production under the arid and semiarid conditions of northern China. Polyphenols content and antioxidant capacity of eggplant pulp   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The influence of organic and conventional farming practices on the phenolic content in eggplant samples belonging to two cultivars, Blackbell (American eggplant) and Millionaire (Japanese eggplant) grown under similar environmental conditions was evaluated. Phytochemical investigation of the eggplant extracts showed that N-caffeoylputrescine, 5-caffeoylquinic acid, and 3-acetyl-5-caffeoylquinic acid made up the bulk of total eggplant phenolics. In addition, this is the first report on identification of trace quantities of three additional flavonols, namely, quercetin-3-glucoside, quercetin-3-rhamnoside, and myricetin-3-galactoside in freeze-dried eggplant pulp. The phenolic content of the conventionally grown Blackbell variety was marginally higher or equal to those grown organically. However, the phenolic content of the Millionaire organic variety was much greater than the conventionally grown samples. Eggplant extract inhibition of cupric-ion mediated oxidation of low-density lipoproteins was highly correlated with the content of 5-caffeolquinic acid (R2 = 0.9124), the most abundant phenolic acid identified.  相似文献

Evaluation of quality characteristics of wheat provides significant feedback to breeders for selection/evolution of the most suitable varieties. Seven advanced wheat cultivars and two commercial varieties were studied for 11 physicochemical characteristics. These cultivars showed significant differences for all parameters except ash content, which showed no significant variation. Test weight ranged between 75.6 kg hl?1 (NRL‐2005) and 80.5 kg hl?1 (NRL‐2017). Kernel weight and volume were highest (4.0 g and 3.2 ml) for NRL‐9822 and lowest (3.3 g and 2.6 ml) for NRL‐2005. Biological yield was highest (14 040 kg ha?1) for NRL‐9822 and lowest (12 380 kg ha?1) for Takbeer variety. Grain yield varied between 4717 kg ha?1 (NRL‐01‐7) and 4042 kg ha?1 (NRL‐9736), non‐grain biomass between 9708 and 8083 kg ha?1, protein yield between 614.3 and 480.8 kg ha?1 and harvest index between 34.8 and 30.8%. Moisture content ranged from 7.46 to 9.07%. Gluten and protein contents were highest (39.69 and 13.81%) in NRL‐9736 and lowest (29.78 and 12.70%) in NRL‐9822. Test weight was positively correlated with kernel weight and volume and negatively associated with moisture, protein and gluten contents. Protein and gluten contents had a negative association with kernel weight and volume. Gluten content had a highly positive correlation with protein content. Grain yield was positively correlated with biological yield. Protein yield had a positive relationship with biological and grain yields and a negative association with harvest index. BACKGROUND: In this study, differences in contents of phenolic compounds and fatty acids in pecan kernels of organically versus conventionally grown pecan cultivars (Cheyenne, Desirable, and Wichita) were evaluated. RESULTS: Although nine phenolic compounds (gallic acid, catechol, catechin, epicatechin, m‐coumaric acid, chlorogenic acid, ellagic acid, caffeic acid and an ellagic acid derivative) were identified in the methanol extract (80% methanol) of defatted kernels, only three compounds (gallic acid, catechin and ellagic acid) existed in sufficient amounts to accurately quantify levels in different cultivars and to study differences in organic versus conventional cultivation. Levels of ellagic acid and catechin found in organically grown ‘Desirable’ were fourfold and twofold higher than in conventional samples, respectively. Furthermore, significant differences in these two compounds were also observed when comparing values between cultivars. Oil content was also significantly greater only in organically grown ‘Desirable’. Oleic acid was the major fatty acid present and its content was significantly higher in organically versus conventionally grown ‘Desirable’ pecans, while there was no difference in levels of oleic acid in ‘Wichita’ and ‘Cheyenne’. On the other hand, linoleic acid content was significantly less in organically versus conventionally grown ‘Desirable’ pecans. CONCLUSION: Overall, these results showed that the effects of cultural differences (i.e. organic versus conventional cultivation) on kernel composition largely depend on the type of pecan cultivar. A comparative cohort study of reproductive performance in organic and conventional dairy husbandry was conducted using longitudinal data from the Norwegian National Board of Animal Production Recording from January 1, 1994 to December 31, 1996. The present study is the first study comparing reproductive efficiency in organic and conventional husbandry in which characteristics such as herd size, breeding season, milk yield, parity, breed, use of artificial insemination (AI), and geographical distribution were taken into account. The organically managed cohort comprised 998 lactation periods, and the conventionally managed cohort comprised 3016 lactation periods. Both groups were similar in herd size and geographical distribution. The following reproduction variables were studied: days open, calving interval, calving to first AI interval, calving to last AI interval, and AI per cow. No consistent difference in reproductive performance was found between the cohorts before adjustments were made for milk yield, breeding season, service, and parity. After inclusion of these independent variables in the repeated measures, mixed-model analyses, reproductive efficiency of organically managed dairy cows was impaired compared with those under conventional management. In organic dairy farming, breeding efficiency was difficult to maintain in cows bred during winter. Organic husbandry proved more efficient than did conventional husbandry in converting roughage into milk. Furthermore, the average multiparity percentage was higher in organically managed cows.  相似文献

Organic food is associated by the general public with improved nutritional properties, and this has led to increasing demand for organic vegetables. The objective of this study was to investigate whether there were any differences in the micronutrient contents in organic and conventional tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Two tomato cultivars ‘Lladó’ and ‘Antillas’ grown organically and conventionally were compared regarding their micronutrient in terms of K, Ca, Na, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, lycopene, ß‐carotene, ascorbic, malic and citric acids, and total phenolic compound content. Cultivar ‘Lladó’ had the highest concentration of the nutrient lycopene, ß‐carotene, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu. Where cultivation method affected the concentration of ascorbic acid and Mn, only one cultivar was affected. For all nutrients examined, cultivar differences were greater than differences because of cultivation method. This study confirms that the most important variable in the micronutrient content of tomatoes is cultivar; organically grown tomato is no more nutritious than conventionally grown tomato when soil fertility is well managed.  相似文献

Total aliphatic, indolic and aromatic glucosinolates were evaluated in the edible portions of fresh harvested inflorescences of five commercial and three experimental broccoli (Brassica oleracea L var italica) cultivars grown under various climatic and agronomic conditions, ie early (winter) or late (spring) season with poor (15 kg ha?1) or rich (150 kg ha?1) sulphur fertilisation, in an attempt to identify differences due to genetic and agronomic factors. The predominant glucosinolates in all broccoli cultivars were 4‐methylsulphinylbutyl‐glucosinolate (glucoraphanin), 3‐indolylmethyl‐glucosinolate (glucobrassicin) and 1‐methoxy‐3‐indolylmethyl‐glucosinolate (neoglucobrassicin). The results showed no significance differences in total glucosinolates between rich and poor fertilisation, whereas total glucosinolates were detected more significantly in the late than in the early season. All broccoli cultivars showed a higher content of indolic glucosinolates than aliphatic glucosinolates. Clear advantages were detected in the analysed commercial cultivars, as the experimental cultivars yielded lower concentrations of these compounds. © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Consumer awareness, pesticide and fertiliser contaminations, and environmental concerns have resulted in significant demand for organically grown farm products. The present study evaluates the influence that organic and conventional farming practices exert on the total phenolic content in eggplant samples from two cultivars, Blackbell (American eggplant) and Millionaire (Japanese eggplant), grown by conventional and organic farming practices with similar climatic conditions. In addition, plant-to-plant variation in phenolic content was determined from eight eggplant samples collected from different plants grown at various field positions. Samples were separately assayed for phenolic content by the two independent procedures, HPLC/LC–MS and Folin–Ciocalteu assay. The results of the HPLC analysis showed significant plant-to-plant variation (% RSD ranged from 22% to 48%) in 5-caffeoylqunic acid content (the most abundant phenolic acid) in eight eggplant samples collected from eight different plants belonging to the same cultivar and grown under similar conditions. The cv. Millionaire showed a higher total phenolic content compared to the Blackbell cultivar. We did not observe significant consistent trend in the phenolic content of eggplant samples grown with organic and conventional farming practices with both eggplant cultivars. We, however, observed a strong correlation (R2 = 0.87) between total phenolic content as assayed by Folin–Ciocalteu assay and 5-caffeoylqunic acid, a major phenolic acid in eggplant extract. This study concludes that multiple repetitive analyses of plant products collected from different plants grown over various time periods (seasons) at different locations should always be carried to unambiguously prove the impact of growing conditions on phenolic content or antioxidant activity.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted with tea cultivar UPASI‐9 over a period of 9 years to evaluate the long‐term effects of nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) fertilizers on yield, biochemical parameters, soil and leaf nutrient status. The yield increase was as high as 66% over the control for N application of 450 kg ha?1 year?1. Polyphenol and amino acid contents increased with increase in K application rate. Positive and significant correlation was found between nitrate reductase activity and the amino acid content of the tea shoots. While ammoniacal nitrogen in the soil was not affected by the application of fertilizer, ammonium acetate extractable K increased. The failure to apply fertilizer resulted in depletion of the organic matter status of the soil. Although increased rate of nitrogen application increased the overall yield of made tea (kg ha?1 year?1), the specific yield (kg kg?1 N) declined. The soil tended to become acidic from frequent application of high doses of nitrogenous fertilizer. The leaf NK status was significantly influenced by the various treatments. Plantain is an important staple in West and Central Africa, where it is predominantly grown by smallholder farmers. On-farm data are rare but yields are considered to be low. We collated actual yields in the region, reviewed regional plantain research published from 1976 to 2013, then estimated what yields would be attainable on smallholder farms if the proven, best-fit innovations were adopted. Mean actual yields reported ranged from 2.9 to 8.9 Mg ha?1 with a mean of 5.7 Mg ha?1 for False horn plantain and 4.5 to 10.2 Mg ha?1 with a mean of 7.8 Mg ha?1 for French plantain. Experiments found dealt with: cultural practices, particularly intercropping; abiotic factors such as fertiliser, mulch application and irrigation; biotic factors, predominantly sucker sanitation methods, but including three controlled yield loss studies on nematodes and black sigatoka; landrace comparisons and the introduction of improved cultivars, predominantly those exhibiting black sigatoka-tolerance. We conclude that intercropping should be retained according to farmer preference as there was no evidence of yield reductions for plantain. Boiling water treatment of suckers should be universally recommended. Inputs, whether mulch or K fertiliser up to 300 kg ha?1, should be applied as both reduced plant losses and increased bunch mass. With the highest yielding local landrace type, on-farm yields could be increased from 7.8 Mg ha?1 to 35.5 Mg ha?1 with purchased inputs or to 23.7 Mg ha?1 without purchased inputs.  相似文献

The effect of cultivation system on phenolic profile, antioxidant capacity and antiproliferation activity in black and red currants was evaluated. Results from this study showed that Ribes fruit grown in organic system posses significantly higher total phenolics, especially anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity (DPPH and FRAP) than fruit grown in conventional system. Phenolic compounds were systematically identified and characterised by UPLC/MS Q‐TOF. The mean value of total polyphenol content in organically grown currants was similar but statistically higher compared with the conventional cultivation (11831.0 and 1543.0 mg/kg of d.m., respectively). The total values of the anthocyanins in ‘Ben Hope’, ‘Ben Alder’, ‘Titania’ and ‘Rondom’ from organic and conventional farms were 1044.5 vs. 1012.4; 1568.3 vs. 1260.4; 1417.2 vs. 1382.2; and 51.8 vs. 57.9 mg kg?1 of d.m., respectively. Conventionally grown red currant had higher anthocyanin content than organically grown red currant (11.8%) but, however, organic fruits of red currant had 2.7 times higher content of oligomeric procyanidins than fruits coming from conventional cultivation. DPPH radical scavenging activity of currant varied from 28.29 to 37.08 mmol Trolox kg?1 (mean 31.20) for organic fruits and from 12.67 to 31.18 mmol Trolox kg?1 (mean 25.76) for conventional fruits. Moreover, all currants from organic cultivation possess higher ferric reducing capacity than conventionally grown fruits. It appeared that extracts of red Ribes cv. ‘Rondom’ coming from organic cultivation revealed stronger antiproliferative effect in comparison with conventional cultivation. However, a similar profile of activity was observed for ‘Ben Hope’, ‘Ben Alder’ and ‘Titania’ independently of the type of cultivation. These results indicate that the cultivation technique had important effect on the ranking of the cultivar systems.  相似文献

Consumers have become more aware of healthy and safe food produced with low environmental impact. Organic agriculture is of particular interest in this respect, as manifested by 5.768 million hectares managed pursuant to Council Regulation (EEC) 2092/91 in Europe. However, there can be a considerable risk that the avoidance of chemical inputs in organic farming will result in poor food quality. Here the results of a study on the quality of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in a 21 year agrosystem comparison between organic and conventional farming in central Europe are reported. Wheat was grown in a ley (grass/clover) rotation. The 71% lower addition of plant‐available nitrogen and the reduced input of other means of production to the organic field plots led to 14% lower wheat yields. However, nutritional value (protein content, amino acid composition and mineral and trace element contents) and baking quality were not affected by the farming systems. Despite exclusion of fungicides from the organic production systems, the quantities of mycotoxins detected in wheat grains were low in all systems and did not differ. In food preference tests, as an integrative method, rats significantly preferred organically over conventionally produced wheat. The findings indicate that high wheat quality in organic farming is achievable by lower inputs, thereby safeguarding natural resources. Copyright © 2007 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The quality of potatoes from organic and conventional farming was investigated in this study. Tubers of eight potato varieties, organically and conventionally produced at one or two geographical sites in controlled field trials, were collected in four consecutive harvests from 1996-1999. The parameters analysed included nitrate, trace elements (As, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Zn), vitamin C, potato glycoalkaloids, as well as chlorogenic acid, polyphenol oxidase and rate of tuber enzymic browning. The results indicated lower nitrate content and higher vitamin C and chlorogenic acid content to be the parameters most consistently differentiating organically from conventionally produced potatoes. Elevated concentrations of glycoalkaloids were also observed throughout the experiments in some potato varieties grown in organic farming systems. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the analytical and other data using three PCs confirmed a good separation between the organically and conventionally produced potatoes when studied in single crop years. However, score-plots (objects) and loading-plots (variables) of pooled results from the consecutive harvests showed that between the years' changes and also variety as well as geographical variations are equally or more important factors determining the quality of potatoes than the farming system. Further studies of various marker compounds of potato quality related to the organic or conventional farming systems should be performed before unbiased information can be given to the consumers.  相似文献

The effects of incremental amounts of nitrogen fertiliser in the range 0–200 kg ha?1 on yield ha?1, tuber dry matter (DM), DM ha?1and flouriness were evaluated in five potato cultivars over three seasons. In general, yield increased with the use of up to 100–150 kg N ha?1and remained constant thereafter; % DM of tubers was significantly diminished by amounts of nitrogen > 150 kg ha?1. In a single poor growing season, yields were small and both yield and% DM were less affected by nitrogen. The mean flouriness score of cooked tubers was highly correlated with specific gravity (SG) class (r = 0.94); tubers with SG > 1.08 were scored floury to very floury. Moderate nitrogen fertiliser use (? 100 kg ha?1) had little effect on weight per cent of crop > SG 1.08; large amounts of N (200 kg ha?1) resulted in a substantial decline in the size of this fraction; the effects of intermediate amounts varied with season and cultivar.  相似文献

Identification of parameters discriminating organic and conventional produce should help prevent misconduct and could provide a firm basis for comparative assessment of the two types of produce. In this report, we compare for selected markers organically versus conventionally grown tubers in four separate field trials. Within each field trial, organic and conventional tubers were subjected to the same pedoclimatic conditions as they were grown in adjacent plots. In all sites and in both cultivars tested, irrespective of environment, organic tubers exhibited a significant enrichment in 15N‰ when compared to their conventional counterparts. Also, the sum of all samples from the four sites (organic versus conventional) showed higher δ15N‰ (7.17 ± 48% versus 3.36 ± 38%; means ± CV%; n = 39; P < 0.001); furthermore, setting as threshold value for assignment in the organic group the lowest δ15N observed for organic samples (i.e. + 4.3‰), only 15% of conventional tubers were misclassified. On the other hand, further parameters selected on the basis of reports of alterations as a consequence of agricultural technique—ascorbic acid, protein content and dry matter—did not show consistent trends of variation throughout the four field trials. Common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) is a pseudocereal that is cultivated for its achenes that possess a high level of flavonoids. Some scientific studies have found that the growing conditions can significantly affect the flavonoid content in conventional and organic food products. Hence, the present study compared conventionally and organically produced common buckwheat with respect to the content of selected flavonoids, thousand achenes weight and achene yield. Three buckwheat varieties were grown with organic and conventional crop management under the same environmental conditions. The thousand achenes weight and achene yield were not significantly influenced by way of crop management. The level of rutin, epicatechin, catechin, and epicatechin gallate in buckwheat groats (hulled achenes) were quantified with high pressure liquid chromatography. Only rutin and epicatechin gallate reached significantly higher level in organic groats. However, the differences were influenced by environmental conditions in the given year and variety.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The effect of different fertilisation (broadcast solid NPK application and fertigation with water‐soluble fertiliser) and irrigation practices (sprinkler and drip irrigation) on yield, the nitrate content in cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.) and the cabbage N uptake was detected, in order to assess the potential risk for N losses, by cultivation on sandy–loam soil. The N rate applied on the plots was 200 kg N ha?1. RESULTS: The highest yield (93 t ha?1) and nitrate content (1256 mg kg?1 DW) were found with treatments using broadcast fertilisation and sprinkler irrigation. On those plots the negative N balance (?30 kg N ha?1) was recorded, which comes mainly from the highest crop N uptake (234 kg N ha?1) indicating the lowest potential for N losses. CONCLUSION: In terms of yield quality and the potential risk for N losses, broadcast fertilisation combined with sprinkler irrigation proved to be the most effective combination among the tested practices under the given experimental conditions. The importance of adequate irrigation is also evident, namely in plots on which 50% drip irrigation was applied, the lowest yield was detected and according to the positive N balance, a higher potential for N losses is expected. BACKGROUND: Given the interest in the development of cultivation systems with low agronomic input and environmental impact, the aim of this study was to determine the influence of tillage system (conventional tillage (CT), two‐layer tillage (TT), surface tillage (ST) and minimum tillage (MT)) and nitrogen (N) fertilisation rate (0, 50 and 100 kg ha?1) on triticale grain and protein yields, chemical composition and nutritive value. RESULTS: There were no significant differences among tillage treatments in grain and protein yields. ST resulted in significantly higher crude protein (CP) and true soluble protein (TSP) contents as well as in vitro crude protein digestibility (CPD). Neutral detergent fibre concentration was significantly higher with ST than with MT, and this led to a small reduction (2 g kg?1 dry matter (DM)) in in vitro true DM digestibility (IVTDMD). N fertilisation significantly increased grain and protein yields as well as CP, non‐protein nitrogen and TSP contents and CPD. IVTDMD was significantly lower with 0 kg N ha?1 than with 50 and 100 kg N ha?1. CONCLUSION: Reducing tillage intensity improved the CP content and CPD of triticale grain.
