A series of well‐defined and property‐controlled polystyrene (PS)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)‐b‐polystyrene (PS) triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom‐transfer radical polymerization, using 2‐bromo‐propionate‐end‐group PEO 2000 as macroinitiatators. The structure of triblock copolymers was confirmed by 1H‐NMR and GPC. The relationship between some properties and molecular weight of copolymers was studied. It was found that glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of copolymers gradually rose and crystallinity of copolymers regularly dropped when molecular weight of copolymers increased. The copolymers showed to be amphiphilic. Stable emulsions could form in water layer of copolymer–toluene–water system and the emulsifying abilities of copolymers slightly decreased when molecular weight of copolymers increased. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) monochloro macroinitiators or PEO telechelic macroinitiators (Cl‐PEO‐Cl) were prepared from monohydroxyfunctional or dihydroxyfunctional PEO and 2‐chloro propionyl chloride. These macroinitiators were applied to the atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene (S). The polymerization was carried out in bulk at 140°C and catalyzed by Copper(I) chloride (CuCl) in the presence of 2,2′‐bipyridine (bipy) ligand (CuCl/bipy). The amphiphilic copolymers were either A‐B diblock or A‐B‐A triblock type, where A block is polystyrene (PS) and B block is PEO. The living nature of the polymerizations leads to block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distribution (1.072 < Mw/Mn < 1.392) for most of the macroinitiators synthesized. The macroinitiator itself and the corresponding block copolymers were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, and SEC analysis. By adjusting the content of the PEO blocks it was possible to prepare water‐soluble/dispersible block copolymers. The obtained block copolymers were used to control paper surface characteristics by surface treatment with small amount of chemicals. The printability of the treated paper was evaluated with polarity factors, liquid absorption measurements, and felt pen tests. The adsorption of such copolymers at the solid/liquid interface is relevant to the wetting and spreading of liquids on hydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces. From our study, it is observed that the chain length of the hydrophilic block and the amount of hydrophobic block play an important role in modification of the paper surface. Among all of block copolymers synthesized, the PS‐b‐PEO‐b‐PS containing 10 wt % PS was found to retard water absorption considerably. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: Until recently, hyperbranched polymers were thought to be ill‐defined materials that were not useful as building blocks for well‐defined complex polymer architectures. It is a current challenge to develop strategies that offer rapid access to well‐defined hyperbranched block copolymers. RESULTS: A convenient three‐step protocol for the synthesis of double‐hydrophilic hyperbranched–linear–hyperbranched ABA‐type triblock copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) is presented. The Bola‐type polymers exhibiting an aliphatic polyether structure were prepared from a linear (lin) linPG‐b‐PEO‐b‐linPG precursor triblock. The materials exhibit low polydispersities (Mw/Mn) in the range 1.19–1.45. The molecular weights of the block copolymers range from 6300 to 26 200 g mol?1, varying in the length of both the linear PEO chain as well as the hbPG segments. Detailed characterization of the thermal properties using differential scanning calorimetry demonstrates nanophase segregation of the blocks. CONCLUSION: The first example of well‐defined ABA hyperbranched–linear–hyperbranched triblock copolymers with PEO middle block and hbPG A‐blocks is presented. The biocompatible nature of the aliphatic polyether blocks renders these materials interesting for biomedical purposes. These new materials are also intriguing with respect to their supramolecular order and biomineralization properties. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Well‐defined polystyrene (PS)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)‐b‐PS triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), using C—X‐end‐group PEO as macroinitiators. The triblock copolymers were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. The experimental results showed that the polymerization was controlled/living. It was found that when the number‐average molecular weight of the macroinititors increased from 2000 to 10,000, the molecular weight distribution of the triblock copolymers decreased roughly from 1.49 to 1.07 and the rate of polymerization became much slower. The possible polymerization mechanism is discussed. According to the Cu content measured with atomic absorption spectrometry, the removal of catalysts, with CHCl3 as the solvent and kaolin as the in situ absorption agent, was effective. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The synthesis of polyacrylonitrile‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PAN‐b‐PEO) diblock copolymers is conducted by sequential initiation and Ce(IV) redox polymerization using amino‐alcohol as the parent compound. In the first step, amino‐alcohol potassium with a protected amine group initiates the polymerization of ethylene oxide (EO) to yield poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with an amine end group (PEO‐NH2), which is used to synthesize a PAN‐b‐PEO diblock copolymer with Ce(IV) that takes place in the redox initiation system. A PAN‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐PAN (PAN‐PEG‐PAN) triblock copolymer is prepared by the same redox system consisting of ceric ions and PEG in an aqueous medium. The structure of the copolymer is characterized in detail by GPC, IR, 1H‐NMR, DSC, and X‐ray diffraction. The propagation of the PAN chain is dependent on the molecular weight and concentration of the PEO prepolymer. The crystallization of the PAN and PEO block is discussed. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 89: 1753–1759, 2003  相似文献

The aim of the work reported was to synthesize a series of double‐hydrophilic poly(methacrylic acid)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PMAA) triblock copolymers and to study their self‐assembly behavior. These copolymeric self‐assembly systems are expected to be potential candidates for applications as carriers of hydrophilic drugs. Bromo‐terminated difunctional PEG macroinitiators were used to synthesize well‐defined triblock copolymers of poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate) via reversible‐deactivation radical polymerization. After the removal of the tert‐butyl group by hydrolysis, double‐hydrophilic PMAA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PMAA triblock copolymers were obtained. pH‐sensitive spherical micelles with a core–corona structure were fabricated by self‐assembly of the double‐hydrophilic PMAA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PMAA triblock copolymers at lower solution pH. Transmission electron microscopy and laser light scattering studies showed the micelles were of nanometric scale with narrow size distribution. Solution pH and micelle concentration strongly influenced the hydrodynamic radius of the spherical micelles (48–310 nm). A possible reason for the formation of the micelles is proposed. In this article, we describe the synthesis and solution properties of PEG‐b‐PTMC star block copolymers via ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) monomer initiated at the hydroxyl end group of the core PEG using HCl Et2O as a monomer activator. The ROP of TMC was performed to synthesize PEG‐b‐PTMC star block copolymers with one, two, four, and eight arms. The PEG‐b‐PTMC star block copolymers with same ratio of between hydrophobic PTMC and hydrophilic PEG segments were obtained in quantitative yield and exhibited monomodal GPC curves. The amphiphilic PEG‐b‐PTMC star block copolymers formed spherical micelles with a core–shell structure in an aqueous phase. The mean hydrodynamic diameters of the micelles increased from 17 to 194 nm with increasing arm number. As arm number increased, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the PEG‐b‐PTMC star block copolymers increased from 3.1 × 10?3 to 21.1 × 10?3 mg/mL but the partition equilibrium constant, which is an indicator of the hydrophobicity of the micelles of the PEG‐b‐PTMC star block copolymers in aqueous media, decreased from 4.44 × 104 to 1.34 × 104. In conclusion, we confirmed that the PEG‐b‐PTMC star block copolymers form micelles and, hence, may be potential hydrophobic drug delivery vehicles. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dually responsive amphiphilic diblock copolymers consisting of hydrophilic poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) [poly(NIPAAm)] and hydrophobic poly(9‐anthracene methyl methacrylate) were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization with 3‐(benzyl sulfanyl thiocarbonyl sulfanyl) propionic acid as a chain‐transfer agent. In the first step, the poly(NIPAAm) chain was grown to make a macro‐RAFT agent, and in the second step, the chain was extended by hydrophobic 9‐anthryl methyl methacrylate to yield amphiphilic poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide‐b‐9‐anthracene methyl methacrylate) block copolymers. The formation of copolymers with three different hydrophobic block lengths and a fixed hydrophilic block was confirmed from their molecular weights. The self‐assembly of these copolymers was studied through the determination of the lower critical solution temperature and critical micelle concentration of the copolymers in aqueous solution. The self‐assembled block copolymers displayed vesicular morphology in the case of the small hydrophobic chain, but the morphology gradually turned into a micellar type when the hydrophobic chain length was increased. The variations in the length and chemical composition of the blocks allowed the tuning of the block copolymer responsiveness toward both the pH and temperature. The resulting self‐assembled structures underwent thermally induced and pH‐induced morphological transitions from vesicles to micelles and vice versa in aqueous solution. These dually responsive amphiphilic diblock copolymers have potential applications in the encapsulation of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic drug molecules, as evidenced from the dye encapsulation studies. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel amphiphilic ABA‐type poly(D ‐gluconamidoethyl methacrylate)‐b‐polyurethane‐b‐poly(D ‐gluconamidoethyl methacrylate) (PGAMA‐b‐PU‐b‐PGAMA) tri‐block copolymers were successfully synthesized via the combination of the step‐growth and copper‐catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Dihydroxy polyurethane (HO‐PU‐OH) was synthesized by the step‐growth polymerization of hexamethylene diisocyanate with poly(tetramethylene glycol). PGAMA‐b‐PU‐b‐PGAMA block copolymers were synthesized via copper‐catalyzed ATRP of GAMA in N, N‐dimethyl formamide at 20°C in the presence of 2, 2′‐bipyridyl using Br‐PU‐Br as macroinitiator and characterized by 1H‐NMR spectroscopy and GPC. The resulting block copolymer forms spherical micelles in water as observed in TEM study, and also supported by 1H NMR spectroscopy and light scattering. Miceller size increases with increase in hydrophilic PGAMA chain length as revealed by DLS study. The critical micellar concentration values of the resulting block copolymers increased with the increase of the chain length of the PGAMA block. Thermal properties of these block copolymers were studied by thermo‐gravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetric study. Spherical Ag‐nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using these block copolymers as stabilizer. The dimension of Ag nanoparticle was tailored by altering the chain length of the hydrophilic block of the copolymer. A mechanism has been proposed for the formation of stable and regulated Ag nanoparticle using various chain length of hydrophilic PGAMA block of the tri‐block copolymer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two series of poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) triblock copolymers were prepared by the ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) and dibutylmagnesium in 1,4‐dioxane solution at 70°C. The triblock structure and molecular weight of the copolymers were analyzed and confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography. The crystallization and thermal properties of the copolymers were investigated by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results illustrated that the crystallization and melting behaviors of the copolymers were depended on the copolymer composition and the relative length of each block in copolymers. Crystallization exothermal peaks (Tc) and melting endothermic peaks (Tm) of PEG block were significantly influenced by the relative length of PCL blocks, due to the hindrance of the lateral PCL blocks. With increasing of the length of PCL blocks, the diffraction and the melting peak of PEG block disappeared gradually in the WAXD patterns and DSC curves, respectively. In contrast, the crystallization of PCL blocks was not suppressed by the middle PEG block. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

A series of amphiphilic graft copolymers, PE‐graft‐PEO, containing hydrophobic polyethylene (PE) as the backbone and hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as the side‐chain, have been synthesized by a novel route. The graft structure and the molecular weight, as well as the molecular weight distribution of the graft copolymer can easily be controlled. The molecular weight of the side‐chain PEO is proportional to the reaction time and the monomer concentration, which indicates the ‘living’ character of the anionic polymerization of ethylene oxide. The produced copolymers PE‐graft‐PEO were characterized by 1H NMR and DSC measurements. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The synthesis of triblock copolymer poly(octadecyl acrylate‐b‐styrene‐b‐octadecyl acrylate), using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), is reported. The copolymers were prepared in two steps. First, polystyrene was synthesized by ATRP using α,α′‐dichloro‐p‐xylene/CuBr/bpy as the initiating system; Second, polystyrene was further used as macroinitiator for the ATRP of octadecyl acrylate to prepare ABA triblock copolymers in the presence of FeCl2·4H2O/PPh3 in toluene. Polymers with controlled molecular weight (Mn = 17,000–23,400) and low polydispersity index value (1.33–1.44) were obtained. The relationship between molecular weight versus conversion showed a straight line. The effect of reaction temperature on polymerization was also investigated, showing a faster polymerization rate under higher temperature. The copolymers were characterized by FTIR, 1H‐NMR, DSC, and GPC and the crystallization behavior of the copolymers was also studied. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) was developed for the controlled preparation of polystyrene (PS)/poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (P4VP) triblock copolymers. First, PS and P4VP homopolymers were prepared using dibenzyl trithiocarbonate as the chain transfer agent (CTA). Then, PS‐b‐P4VP‐b‐PS and P4VP‐b‐PS‐b‐P4VP triblock copolymers were synthesized using as macro‐CTA the obtained homopolymers PS and P4VP, respectively. The synthesized polymers had relatively narrower molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.25), and the polymerization was controlled/living. Furthermore, the polymerization rate appeared to be lower when styrene was polymerized using P4VP as the macro‐CTA, compared with polymerizing 4‐vinylpyridine using PS as the macro‐CTA. This was attributed to the different transfer constants of the P4VP and PS macro‐CTAs to the styrene and the 4‐vinylpyridine, respectively. The aggregates of the triblock copolymers with different compositions and chain architectures in water also were investigated, and the results are presented. Reducing the P4VP block length and keeping the PS block constant favored the formation of rod aggregates. Moreover, the chain architecture in which the P4VP block was in the middle of the copolymer chain was rather favorable to the rod assembly because of the entropic penalty associated with the looping of the middle‐block P4VP to form the aggregate corona and tailing of the end‐block PS into the core of the aggregates. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The AB type diblock PS‐b‐PEO and ABA type triblock PS‐b‐PEO‐b‐PS copolymers containing the same proportions of polystyrene (PS) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) but different connection sequence were synthesized and investigated. Using the sequential living anionic polymerization and ring‐opening polymerization mechanisms, diblock PS‐b‐PEO copolymers with one hydroxyl group at the PEO end were obtained. Then, using the classic and efficient Williamson reaction (realized in a ‘click’ style), triblock PS‐b‐PEO‐b‐PS copolymers were achieved by a coupling reaction between hydroxyl groups at the PEO end of PS‐b‐PEO. The PS‐b‐PEO and PS‐b‐PEO‐b‐PS copolymers were well characterized by 1H NMR spectra and SEC measurements. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and thermal behaviors were also investigated by steady‐state fluorescence spectra and DSC, respectively. The results showed that, because the PEO segment in triblock PS‐b‐PEO‐b‐PS was more restricted than that in diblock PS‐b‐PEO copolymer, the former PS‐b‐PEO‐b‐PS copolymer always gave higher CMC values and lower crystallization temperature (Tc), melting temperature (Tm) and degree of crystallinity (Xc) parameters. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The crystallization behavior of two molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide)s (PEO) and their blends with the block copolymer poly(2‐vinyl pyridine)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (P2VP‐b‐PEO) was investigated by polarized optical microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A sharp decreasing of the spherulite growth rate was observed with the increasing of the copolymer content in the blend. The addition of P2VP‐b‐PEO to PEO increases the degradation temperature becoming the thermal stability of the blend very similar to that of the block copolymer P2VP‐b‐PEO. Glass transition temperatures, Tg, for PEO/P2VP‐b‐PEO blends were intermediate between those of the pure components and the value increased as the content of PEO homopolymer decreased in the blend. AFM images showed spherulites with lamellar crystal morphology for the homopolymer PEO. Lamellar crystal morphology with sheaf‐like lamellar arrangement was observed for 80 wt% PEO(200M) and a lamellar crystal morphology with grain aggregation was observed for 50 and 20 wt% blends. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of PEO was progressively retarded as the copolymer content in the blend increased, since the copolymer hinders the molecular mobility in the miscible amorphous phase. Biodegradable ABA triblock copolymers with poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(glycolic acid‐valine) blocks were synthesized via ring‐opening polymerization of cyclo(glycolic acid‐valine) using Ca‐alcoholates of hydroxytelechelic PEO as the initiator. The L‐valine residue racemized during copolymerization of cyclo(glycolic acid‐valine). The crystallization of the block copolymers decreases with decreasing PEO content in the triblock copolymers and with increasing length of the poly(glycolic acid‐valine) block. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polystyrene‐b‐poly(dimethylsiloxane)‐b‐polystyrene (Pst‐b‐PDMS‐b‐PSt) triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Commercially available difunctional PDMS containing vinylsilyl terminal species was reacted with hydrogen bromide, resulting in the PDMS macroinitiators for the ATRP of styrene (St). The latter procedure was carried out at 130°C in a phenyl ether solution with CuCl and 4, 4′‐di (5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine (dNbpy) as the catalyzing system. By using this technique, triblock copolymers consisting of a PDMS center block and polystyrene terminal blocks were synthesized. The polymerization was controllable; ATRP of St from those macroinitiators showed linear increases in Mn with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR and 1H‐NMR. The effects of molecular weight of macroinitiators, macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP are reported. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 3764–3770, 2004  相似文献

A series of new amphiphilic poly[methyl(3,3,3‐trifluoropropyl) siloxane]‐b‐poly(ethyleneoxide) (PMTFPS‐b‐PEO) diblock copolymers with different ratio of hydrophobic segment to hydrophilic segment were prepared by coupling reactions of end‐functional PMTFPS and PEO homopolymers. PMTFPS‐b‐PEO diblock copolymers synthesized were shown to be well defined and narrow molecular weight distributed by characterizations such as NMR, GPC, and FTIR. Additionally, the solution properties of these diblock copolymers were investigated using tensiometry and transmission electron microscopy. Interestingly, the critical micellization concentration increases with increasing length of hydrophobic chain. Transmission electron microscopy studies showed that PMTFPS‐b‐PEO diblock copolymers in water preferentially aggregated into vesicles. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

The micellization of three tailor‐made triblock copolymers, such as PB100–P2VP100–PEO104, PB185–P2VP108–PEO154, and PB37–P2VP115–PEO241, having similar total molecular weights and constant poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (P2VP) sequence lengths, was investigated as a function of pH and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) concentration. At pH 7 the formation of intermicellar aggregates was observed, especially for copolymers of low poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) content. A pH decrease from 7 to 3 leads to a particle size increase due to the electrostatic repulsion of the protonated P2VP chains. The influence of the PEO sequence length was also observed for zeta potential values. At pH 3, in the absence of SDS, core–shell–corona micelles are formed whereas in the presence of small amount of SDS (degree of neutralization DN = 0%–50%), a complex is formed between SDS and the protonated P2VP which leads to the shrinkage of the shell and thus to a decrease of the micellar sizes. For higher DN values, the micellar sizes increase due to the formation of large agglomerates and a transition occurs from a monomodal to a bimodal size distribution. Furthermore, it turned out that secondary aggregation, such as intermicellar aggregation, can completely be avoided if the degree of polymerization (DPn) of the water‐soluble block is significantly higher than the DPn of the water‐insoluble sequence. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
