Though enterprise resource planning (ERP) has gained some prominence in the information systems (IS) literature over the past few years and is a significant phenomenon in practice, through (a) historical analysis, (b) meta-analysis of representative IS literature, and (c) a survey of academic experts, we reveal dissenting views on the phenomenon. Given this diversity of perspectives, it is unlikely that at this stage a broadly agreed definition of ERP can be achieved. We thus seek to increase awareness of the issues and stimulate further discussion, with the ultimate aim being to: (1) aid communication amongst researchers and between researchers and practitioners; (2) inform development of teaching materials on ERP and related concepts in university curricula and in commercial education and training; and (3) aid communication amongst clients, consultants and vendors. Increased transparency of the ERP-concept within IS may also benefit other aligned fields of knowledge. 相似文献

Implementing Enterprise Resource Planning Systems: The Role of Learning from Failure 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
ERP implementations remain problematic despite the fact that many of the issues are by now quite well known. In this paper, we take a different perspective from the critical success factors and risks approaches that are common in the information systems discipline to explain why ERP implementations fail. Specifically, we adapt Sitkin's theory of intelligent failure to ERP implementations resulting in a theory that we call learning from failure. We then examine from the viewpoint of this theory the details of two SAP R/3 implementations, one of which failed while the other succeeded. Although it is impossible to state, unequivocally, that the implementation that failed did so because it did not use the approach that was derived from the theory, the analysis reveals that the company that followed many of the tenets of the theory succeeded while the other did not. 相似文献

To assist decentralised planning, the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has taken the initiative to develop a computer-based spatial information system for planning and management of the natural resources at the district and sub-district level. At present ten district level database centres called Natural Resources Data Management System (NRDMS) have been functioning in different geo-environments in India.
The present paper discusses the experience of the Centre for Applied Systems Analysis in Development (CASAD). CASAD is involved in managing the NRDMS database centre at Bankura district and was associated with the development of DSS models in Kheda district. Managers and researchers would benefit from an understanding of the organizational practices that result in more featured e-commerce sites and of the particular features that contribute to firm performance. In a Web-based survey of 458 business-to-consumer e-commerce managers, CEO commitment and planning resulted in more featured sites whereas business process redesign did not. Four features, namely publishing applications, catalog applications, interactivity, and interfaces, predicted firm performance at a statistically significant level, while transaction applications and server performance did not. The research contributes by demonstrating the general importance of the organizational practices and site features, while raising questions about business process redesign, transaction applications, and server performance. 相似文献

Building their companies into successful e-businesses has become an important objective for today's enterprises. Conceptually, it embodies the enabling of the business with such capabilities as global networking, streamlining business processes, sharing information, agility in responding to the market, and intelligent decision making. But how can these concepts be implemented in actual enterprises? Why do these desirable attributes of business systems suddenly become the definition of competency of companies large and small? This paper describes the framework for building an e-business from the enterprise information systems' perspective. Increasingly enterprise systems have extended beyond the traditional business functions and include such new features as supply-chain management, customer relationship management and electronic commerce. The shifting focus is driven by the adoption of the Web as a new channel for product distribution, marketing, and interacting with customers. The integration of the traditional as well as the Web-oriented functions is the cornerstone for a successful e-business. This paper presents a framework for e-businesses that on one hand build on the enterprise systems but on the other hand encompasses the new e-business dimensions. 相似文献

Abstract: Information systems have been applied to human resource management (HRM) for decades. However, the way of using information systems and the way of processing information for HRM have evolved and dramatically improved over the last decade. More and more HRM systems today are being changed to e-HRM systems. This is mainly due to the advent of Internet technology and the emerging concept of business intelligence. Our study shows the evolution of information systems and information processing in the HRM domain and provides an implementation case in a large Chinese state-run factory. The organization in this study used all versions of IMS, from IMS 1 through IMS VS 1.01, over the period 1970–1975. During this period, the number of messages processed steadily increased from 6000 in October 1970 to a maximum in excess of 150,000 in September 1974. This volume enhancement was achieved by solving a sequence of problems concerning IMS software, data base design, or program coding. Perhaps the most important factors supporting the increase were two improvements in IMS software: one was the data base buffer pool introduced with IMS 2; the other the feature introduced with IMS VS that, unlike the previous versions, enabled the simultaneous updating of different data base segments belonging to the same type. 相似文献

Business rules represent policies, procedures and constraints regarding how an enterprise conducts its business. To get the full benefits of modeling business rules requires an approach to managing them through their full lifecycle, from acquisition through deployment and evolution. The research reported in this paper is aimed at determining what infrastructure capabilities are needed to provide this lifecycle support. The solution embodies a modeling framework that captures the structure of the enterprise, in terms of which the business rules can be expressed, and decision-support capabilities for reasoning about and deriving business rules. The paper demonstrates the possibility of automatic support of the business rules lifecycle by automatically generating business rules from the captured information, along with data representing domain assumptions in a case study (the London Ambulance System). A system was implemented to illustrate the methodology and to demonstrate the feasibility of the approach. The methodology also gives guidance on how to deal with pragmatically important situations such as rules that involve both automated and human tasks, nondeterministic rules, and goal-oriented versus operational rules. 相似文献
