Mapping communication and collaboration in heterogeneous research networks   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The aim of this mainly methodological paper is to present an approach for researching the triple helix of university-industry-government relations as a heterogeneous and multi-layered communication network. The layers included are: the formal scholarly communication in academic journals, the communication network based on project collaborations, and finally the communication of information over the 'virtual' network of web links. The approach is applied on typical 'Mode 2' fields such as biotechnology, while using a variety of data sources. We present some of the initial findings, which indicate the different structures and functions of the three layers of communication.  相似文献

Science is a societal process, designed on widely accepted general rules which facilitate its development. Productive researchers are viewed from the perspective of a social network of their interpersonal relations. In this paper we address performance of Slovenian research community using bibliographic networks between the years 1970 and 2015 from various aspects which determine prolific science. We focus on basic determinants of research performance including productivity, collaboration, internationality, and interdisciplinarity. For each of the determinants, we select a set of statistics and network measures to investigate the state of each in every year of the analyzed period. The analysis is based on high quality data from manually curated information systems. We interpret the results by relating them to important historical events impacting Slovenia and to domestic expenditure for research and development. Our results clearly demonstrate causal relations between the performance of research community and changes in wider society. Political and financial stability together with concise measuring of scientific productivity established soon after Slovenia won independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 had positive influence on all determinants. They were further leveraged by foundation of Slovenian research agency and joining EU and NATO. Publish and perish phenomenon, negative impacts of financial crisis in 2008–2014 and reshaping the domestic expenditure for research and development after 2008 have also clear response in scientific community. In the paper, we also study the researcher’s career productivity cycles and present the analysis of the career productivity for all registered researchers in Slovenia.  相似文献

This article, which began as an effort to gauge trends in and contributions to the broad field of “entrepreneur/entrepreneurship,” reviews 5,476 academic articles on entrepreneurship that were published in 522 Social Sciences Citation Index and Science Citation Index journals from 1996 to June 2012. This survey identifies keywords and conducts a review to search for and identify related articles in the Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science database. We then present our findings, including the number of publications by year, categorization of article types, main academic journals, authors, and most-cited articles. The citation counts for authors, journals, and articles are also analyzed. This study indicates that the number of articles related to the keyword entrepreneur increased from 1996 to the end of 2011, which is a sign of an upward trend in the influence of entrepreneurs. Entrepreneur research fascinated numerous scholars during the study period covering 16.5 years. In particular, researchers from the USA, England, Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands have made the most contributions to this field. This literature review provides evidence that the concept of entrepreneur attracted academic researchers, resulting in significant contributions to the field of entrepreneur research.  相似文献

The long-term influence and contribution of research can be evaluated relatively reliably by bibliometric citation analysis. Previously, productivity of nations has been estimated by using either the number of published articles or journal impact factors and/or citation data. These studies show certain trends, but detailed analysis is not possible due to the assumption that all articles in a journal were equally cited. Here we describe the first comprehensive, longterm, nationwide analysis of scientific performance. We studied the lifetime research output of 748 Finnish principal investigators in biomedicine during the years 1966–2000, analysed national trends, and made a comparison with international research production. Our results indicate that analyses of the scientific contribution of persons, disciplines, or nations should be based on actual publication and citation counts rather than on derived information like impact factors. 51% of the principal investigators have published altogether 75% of the articles; however, the whole scientific community has contributed to the growth of biomedical research in Finland since the Second World War.  相似文献

The scholars in the research domains of innovation and strategic management concerned about the appropriability for about 30 years or more. They focused on appropriability research and constantly evolving. In this paper, we analyze 30 years (1986–2016) literature on appropriability studies from Web of Science Core Collection database. A cited reference clustering map of different periods and terms co-occurrence map have been generated using bibliometric analysis and content analysis. Based on this, we study the evolutionary trajectory, mechanisms and theoretical architecture of appropriability research and explore further research directions. The results indicate that the essence of the appropriability research evolution is the perception changes in opening and sharing, value creation and value growth, and future research is focusing on role of appropriability in the platform governance, generative appropriability and the evolution of the problem-solving mechanisms.  相似文献

Adaptive networks appear in many biological applications. They combine topological evolution of the network with dynamics in the network nodes. Recently, the dynamics of adaptive networks has been investigated in a number of parallel studies from different fields, ranging from genomics to game theory. Here we review these recent developments and show that they can be viewed from a unique angle. We demonstrate that all these studies are characterized by common themes, most prominently: complex dynamics and robust topological self-organization based on simple local rules.  相似文献

The structure of many biological, social and technological systems can usefully be described in terms of complex networks. Although often portrayed as fixed in time, such networks are inherently dynamic, as the edges that join nodes are cut and rewired, and nodes themselves update their states. Understanding the structure of these networks requires us to understand the dynamic processes that create, maintain and modify them. Here, we build upon existing models of coevolving networks to characterize how dynamic behaviour at the level of individual nodes generates stable aggregate behaviours. We focus particularly on the dynamics of groups of nodes formed endogenously by nodes that share similar properties (represented as node state) and demonstrate that, under certain conditions, network modularity based on state compares well with network modularity based on topology. We show that if nodes rewire their edges based on fixed node states, the network modularity reaches a stable equilibrium which we quantify analytically. Furthermore, if node state is not fixed, but can be adopted from neighbouring nodes, the distribution of group sizes reaches a dynamic equilibrium, which remains stable even as the composition and identity of the groups change. These results show that dynamic networks can maintain the stable community structure that has been observed in many social and biological systems.  相似文献

Over the past several years, a significant amount of research has been conducted in the areas of optical packet switching (OPS) and optical burst switching (OBS). This research has been motivated by the need for techniques that are capable of supporting the demanding requirements of emerging dynamic high-bandwidth network applications in a flexible and efficient manner. Although optical packet and burst switching have yet to be widely deployed in commercial settings, recent research progress indicates that such deployments are not infeasible in the near future. The authors review the literature on OPS and OBS. Basic concepts are discussed and an overview of current and emerging research issues and challenges for optical packet and burst switched networks is presented. The authors attempt to cover issues that are essential for the practical deployment of such networks and highlight promising research directions that are likely to facilitate such deployments.  相似文献

Many manufacturing firms are expanding their global footprint to explore new opportunities for efficient and effective production. The strategic perspective on international manufacturing networks involves both the network level and the plant level. A key aspect is the relationship between the network and the role of plants. In this research, we investigate the relationship between the network and plant perspectives in international manufacturing networks. We use an embedded case study that includes five plants in two product networks over a period of three years. We analyse how changing the role of one plant affects the network as well as the roles of the other plants in the networks. We find that decisions on plant roles are, to a very high degree, network decisions and not decisions for individual plants. Based on the insights into the case study, we also develop a framework for mapping manufacturing networks, including market coverage, plant location and site competence.  相似文献

This paper presents a critical analysis of diverse interpretations of architecture and human behaviour, which have been published in the USA since 1970. Contributions by authors trained in architecture, social anthropology, geography, sociology and psychology are included. It becomes apparent that despite the proliferation of research there is still no comprehensive methodology for the study of the interaction between people and their physical surroundings. Rather, the approach generally adopted by authors in diverse disciplines has been piecemeal. In conclusion, the redefinition and the diversification of research in this field is proposed.  相似文献

How does our collective scholarly knowledge grow over time? What major areas of science exist and how are they interlinked? Which areas are major knowledge producers; which ones are consumers? Computational scientometrics — the application of bibliometric/scientometric methods to large-scale scholarly datasets — and the communication of results via maps of science might help us answer these questions. This paper represents the results of a prototype study that aims to map the structure and evolution of chemistry research over a 30 year time frame. Information from the combined Science (SCIE) and Social Science (SSCI) Citations Indexes from 2002 was used to generate a disciplinary map of 7,227 journals and 671 journal clusters. Clusters relevant to study the structure and evolution of chemistry were identified using JCR categories and were further clustered into 14 disciplines. The changing scientific composition of these 14 disciplines and their knowledge exchange via citation linkages was computed. Major changes on the dominance, influence, and role of Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioengineering over these 30 years are discussed. The paper concludes with suggestions for future work.  相似文献

This paper extends the co-word method for mapping science, adopting new statistical and graphical methods to explore time-series data and the changing distribution of effort between different research themes. It also tests the reliability of the co-word method, comparing coword data on the acidification of the environment with data derived from a large scale interview study. Overall, the study increases our confidence in the reliability of the co-word method. In particular, it leads us to the following conclusions: (a) that the PASCAL database is representative, at least in the area of acidification research; (b) that indexer bias is negligible; and (c) that the co-word method satisfactorily identifies groups of research themes and the way in which these evolve.It is with deep sadness and regret thatJohn Law has to report the tragic and unexpected death ofJohn Whittaker. The present paper was partially drafted before his death and reports findings that were the result of a close three-year collaboration. A review of theoretical calculations of black-body radiation (BBR) shifts in various systems of interest to atomic clock research is presented. Calculations for monovalent systems, such as Ca+, Sr+, and Rb are carried out using a relativistic all-order single-double method, where all single and double excitations of the Dirac-Fock wave function are included to all orders of perturbation theory. A recently developed method for accurate calculations of BBR shifts in divalent atoms such as Sr is discussed. This approach combines the relativistic all-order method and the configuration interaction method. The evaluation of uncertainties in theoretical values of BBR shifts is discussed in detail.  相似文献
