Sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) are a major environmental issue. One of the major factors causing SSOs is the rain-derived inflow and infiltration (RDII) to a separate sanitary sewer system. If a wastewater collection system is not well maintained, cumulative system-wide RDII could easily cause the wastewater conveyance and treatment capacity to be overwhelmed, and thus lead to SSOs. Monitoring system condition is a key component in system management. The industry’s standard approaches to system monitoring include the practice of collecting and analyzing continuous rainfall and flow data at certain key locations in the system to estimate the level of RDII. However, the writer is of the opinion that the current standard analytical methodologies of the industry can be significantly improved. This paper introduces a basic regression approach with autoregressive errors to support statistical inferences with respect to the level of RDII.  相似文献

The authors devised a prestimulus-probe method to assess the allocation of attention as a function of participants' top-down expectancies concerning distractor and target locations. Participants performed the flanker task, and distractor locations remained fixed. On some trials, instead of the flanker display, either 2 simultaneous dots or a horizontal line appeared. The dot in the expected distractor location was perceived to occur before the dot in the expected empty location, and the line appeared to extend from the expected distractor location to the expected empty location, suggesting that attention is allocated to expected distractor locations prior to stimulus onset. The authors propose that a process-all mechanism guides attention to expected locations of all stimuli regardless of task demands and that this constitutes a major cause for failures of selective attention. A major question in central nervous system development, including the neuroretina, is whether migrating cells express cues to find their way and settle at specific locations. We have transplanted quail neuroretinal cell lines QNR/D, a putative amacrine or ganglion cell, and QNR/K2, a putative Müller cell into chicken embryo eyes. Implanted QNR/D cells migrate only to the retinal ganglion and amacrine cell layers and project neurites in the plane of retina; in contrast, QNR/K2 cells migrate through the ganglion and amacrine layers, locate in the inner nuclear layer, and project processes across the retina. These data show that QNR/D and QNR/K2 cell lines represent distinct neural cell types, suggesting that migrating neural cells express distinct address cues. Furthermore, our results raise the possibility that immortalized cell lines can be used for replacement of specific cell types and for the transport of genes to given locations in neuroretina.  相似文献

Alfalfa-reference evapotranspiration (ETr) values sometimes need to be converted to grass-reference ET (ETo), or vice versa, to enable crop coefficients developed for one reference surface to be used with the other. However, guidelines to make these conversions are lacking. The objectives of this study were to: (1) develop ETr to ETo ratios (Kr values) for different climatic regions for the growing season and nongrowing (dormant) seasons; and (2) determine the seasonal behavior of Kr values between the locations and in the same location for different seasons. Monthly average Kr values from daily values were developed for Bushland, (Tex.), Clay Center, (Neb.), Davis, (Calif.), Gainesville, (Fla.), Phoenix (Ariz.), and Rockport, (Mo.) for the calendar year and for the growing season (May–September). ETr and ETo values that were used to determine Kr values were calculated by several methods. Methods included the standardized American Society of Civil Engineers Penman–Monteith (ASCE-PM), Food and Agriculture Organization Paper 56 (FAO56) equation (68), 1972 and 1982 Kimberly-Penman, 1963 Jensen-Haise, and the High Plains Regional Climate Center (HPRCC) Penman. The Kr values determined by the same and different methods exhibited substantial variations among locations. For example, the Kr values developed with the ASCE-PM method in July were 1.38, 1.27, 1.32, 1.11, 1.28, and 1.19, for Bushland, Clay Center, Davis, Gainesville, Phoenix, and Rockport, respectively. The variability in the Kr values among locations justifies the need for developing local Kr values because the values did not appear to be transferable among locations. In general, variations in Kr values were less for the growing season than for the calendar year. Average standard deviation between years was maximum 0.13 for the calendar year and maximum 0.10 for the growing season. The ASCE-PM Kr values had less variability among locations than those obtained with other methods. The FAO56 procedure Kr values had higher variability among locations, especially for areas with low relative humidity and high wind speed. The 1972 Kim-Pen method resulted in the closest Kr values compared with the ASCE-PM method at all locations. Some of the methods, including the ASCE-PM, produced potentially unrealistically high Kr values (e.g., 1.78, 1.80) during the nongrowing season, which could be due to instabilities and uncertainties that exist when estimating ETr and ETo in dormant season since the hypothetical reference conditions are usually not met during this period in most locations. Because simultaneous and direct measurements of the ETr and ETo values rarely exist, it appears that the approach of ETr to ETo ratios calculated with the ASCE-PM method is currently the best approach available to derive Kr values for locations where these measurements are not available. The Kr values developed in this study can be useful for making conversions from ETr to ETo, or vice versa, to enable using crop coefficients developed for one reference surface with the other to determine actual crop water use for locations, with similar climatic characteristics of this study, when locally measured Kr values are not available.  相似文献

Storage tanks are commonly installed in a combined sewer system to control the discharge of combined sewer overflows that have been identified as a leading source for receiving water pollution. The traditional approach to determine the distribution of storage tank volume in the sewer system is confined to the use of objectives within the system itself due to the limits of separate modeling of urban wastewater systems, consisting of the sewer system, wastewater-treatment plant, and receiving water. The aim of this study is to investigate the optimal distribution and control of storage tanks with an objective to mitigate the impact of new residential development on receiving water quality from an integrated modeling perspective. An integrated urban wastewater model has been used to test three optimization scenarios: optimal flow rate control, storage distribution, and a combination of these two. In addition to the cost of storage tank construction, two receiving water quality indicators, dissolved oxygen and ammonium concentration, are used as optimization objectives. Results show the benefits of direct evaluation of receiving water quality impact in the context of storage distribution optimization. Results indicate that storage allocation should be considered in conjunction with optimal flow rate control to achieve the maximum effectiveness in water pollution mitigation.  相似文献

The performance of a combined sewer overflow (CSO) storage/treatment facility in North Toronto, Ont., Canada, was investigated by conjunctive numerical and physical (hydraulic) modeling. The main objectives of the study were to (1) assess the feasibility of increasing the hydraulic loading of the CSO facility without bypassing; and (2) establish a verified numerical model of the facility for future work. The numerical model [a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD), PHOENICS] was validated and verified using results from a hydraulic scale model (1:11.6). The results obtained show that the CFD model can simulate hydraulic conditions in the facility well, as demonstrated by accurate reproduction of the filling rate, water levels at various locations, flow velocities in feed pipes, and overflows from the inflow channel. Numerical simulations identified excessive local head losses and helped select structural changes to reduce such losses. The analysis of the facility showed that with respect to hydraulic operation, the facility is a complex, highly nonlinear hydraulic system. Within the existing constraints, a few structural changes examined by numerical simulation could increase the maximum treatment flow rate in the CSO storage/treatment facility by up to 31%.  相似文献

Functional anatomical studies indicate that a set of neural signals in parietal and frontal cortex mediates the covert allocation of attention to visual locations across a wide variety of visual tasks. This frontoparietal network includes areas, such as the frontal eye field and supplementary eye field. This anatomical overlap suggests that shifts of attention to visual locations of objects recruit areas involved in oculomotor programming and execution. Finally, the fronto-parietal network may be the source of spatial attentional modulations in the ventral visual system during object recognition or discrimination.  相似文献

In 4 experiments, 176 male garter snakes, tested in groups of 8, established preferred shelter locations and reliably returned to these locations as a group or as individuals when the test aquaria were left undisturbed between trials. When the aquaria were cleaned and the contents replaced on each trial, preferred shelter locations were not established over trials; however, Ss were found under shelters in large aggregates more frequently than would be expected by chance. It appears that the snakes deposit cues in the apparatus that are subsequently used to return to preferred locations. Manipulations of various objects in the test arena indicated that the relevant cues were deposited on the paper underlying the preferred shelter. An artificial neural network (ANN) model is developed to study the correlation of data with reference to various wastewater pollution parameters (biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, suspended solids, NH4, PO4) using two scales of experiments viz. column lysimeter and a pilot soil aquifer treatment (SAT) system for wastewater renovation in India. A unique feature of the study is that the primary treated wastewater was directly applied to SAT system for renovation in contrast to the secondary treated effluent used in most of the other studies that have been reported. The analysis of data using ANN as a tool indicates that the column lysimeter data are useful for design of SAT systems and it is possible to predict the effluent quality for SAT system based on the inputs from lysimeter experiments. The study highlights the utility of column lysimeter studies for evolving design parameters for a full-scale SAT system thereby obviating the need for pilot SAT studies which are site specific, time consuming, and expensive. Thus, the study suggests that the experimental data from lysimeter studies at a particular site can be used to predict performance of field-scale SAT systems without going in for actual experimentation. Further, the field data from one site could be utilized for design of SAT systems at other locations provided the climatic and hydrogeological conditions viz. soil matrix characteristics and wastewater characteristics, etc., are similar.  相似文献

Although attention is distributed across time as well as space, the temporal allocation of attention has been less well researched than its spatial counterpart. A temporal analog of the covert spatial orientation task [Posner MI, Snyder CRR, Davidson BJ (1980) Attention and the detection of signals. J Exp Psychol Gen 109:160-174] was developed to compare the neural systems involved in directing attention to spatial locations versus time intervals. We asked whether there exists a general system for allocating attentional resources, independent of stimulus dimension, or whether functionally specialized brain regions are recruited for directing attention toward spatial versus temporal aspects of the environment. We measured brain activity in seven healthy volunteers by using positron emission tomography (PET) and in eight healthy volunteers by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The task manipulated cued attention to spatial locations (S) and temporal intervals (T) in a factorial design. Symbolic central cues oriented subjects toward S only (left or right), toward T only (300 msec or 1500 msec), toward both S and T simultaneously, or provided no information regarding S or T. Subjects also were scanned during a resting baseline condition. Behavioral data showed benefits and costs for performance during temporal attention similar to those established for spatial attention. Brain-imaging data revealed a partial overlap between neural systems involved in the performance of spatial versus temporal orientation of attention tasks. Additionally, hemispheric asymmetries revealed preferential right and left parietal activation for spatial and temporal attention, respectively. Parietal cortex was activated bilaterally by attending to both dimensions simultaneously. This is the first direct comparison of the neural correlates of attending to spatial versus temporal cues.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that simple reaction times (RTs) to a visual target are facilitated when the target occurs at a location expected by an observer and are slowed when the target occurs at the mirror-symmetric location contralateral to the expectancy. The present 7 experiments, with 8 observers, examined the spatial extent of this attention effect by inducing Ss to expect the target at 1 location and introducing occasional probe flashes at other locations throughout the visual field. RTs to these probes were equivalent to those obtained at the expected location so long as the probe was in the same hemifield as the S's expectancy. Conversely, RTs to probes in the hemifield opposite the expectancy generated uniformly slower response times. These results were obtained when the expected location varied in eccentricity from 2° to 16° along the horizontal meridian. In addition, when the expected and unexpected locations were within the same hemifield, no expectancy effects were observed. Under these conditions, the frequently used metaphor that directed visual attention operates like a spatially restricted "beam" appears inaccurate. Predictive control of aluminum electrolytic cells using neural networks   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
In this work, neural networks are built and trained to be used in a predictive control scheme for the aluminum electrolytic cell. An efficient control of the cell requires the knowledge of predicted future values of the decision variables in order to enable the standard (nonpredictive) control logic to take anticipated actions to prevent the anode effect, a destabilizing event occurring during cell operation. The networks are first trained on data obtained from a computer simulator of the cell prior to undergoing further on-line learning. Trained to predict the cell resistance and the resistance’s trend indicators, the networks are applied to the control of cells in different cell states, with a view to preventing anode effects, the latter being deliberately induced by reducing the alumina feed rate or reducing the feeding frequency and duration. Results show that, with neural-predictive control, anode effects can be avoided, which should result in increased thermal stability, decreased power consumption, and reduced fluoride emissions. Further, the on-line learning capacity of the networks offers a good perspective for their application to other complex industrial processes as well.  相似文献

Evaluation of Seismic Damage to Memphis Bridges and Highway Systems   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
This paper presents a procedure for the evaluation of the expected seismic damage to bridges and highway systems in Memphis and Shelby County, Tenn. Data pertinent to 452 bridges and major arterial routes were collected and implemented as a geographic information system database. The bridges were classified into several bridge types using a bridge classification system modified from the NBIS∕Federal Highway Administration coding guidelines. The bridge damage states considered are no∕minor damage, repairable damage, and significant damage. The fragility curves corresponding to these damage states were established for various bridge types. Given an earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.0 occurring at Marked Tree, Ark., the intensity of ground shaking and liquefaction-induced permanent ground deformation in Memphis and Shelby County were estimated, and then the expected damage to bridges and highway systems was determined. The results can be used to prioritize bridges for retrofitting, to prepare a pre-earthquake preparedness plan, to develop a postearthquake emergency response plan, and to assess the regional economic impact from the damage to highway transportation systems.  相似文献

The trunk neural crest of vertebrate embryos is a transient collection of precursor cells present along the dorsal aspect of the neural tube. These cells migrate on two distinct pathways and give rise to specific derivatives in precise embryonic locations. One group of crest cells migrates early on a ventral pathway and generates neurons and glial cells. A later-dispersing group migrates laterally and gives rise to melanocytes in the skin. These observations raise the possibility that the appearance of distinct derivatives in different embryonic locations is a consequence of lineage restrictions specified before or soon after the onset of neural crest cell migration. To test this notion, we have assessed when and in what order distinct cell fates are specified during neural crest development. We determined the proportions of different types of precursor cells in cultured neural crest populations immediately after emergence from the neural tube and at intervals as development proceeds. We found that the initial neural crest population was a heterogeneous mixture of precursors almost half of which generated single-phenotype clones. Distinct neurogenic and melanogenic sublineages were also present in the outgrowth population almost immediately, but melanogenic precursors dispersed from the neural tube only after many neurogenic precursors had already done so. A discrete fate-restricted neuronal precursor population was distinguished before entirely separate fate-restricted melanocyte and glial precursor populations were present, and well before initial neuronal differentiation. Taken together, our results demonstrate that lineage-restricted subpopulations constitute a major portion of the initial neural crest population and that neural crest diversification occurs well before overt differentiation by the asynchronous restriction of distinct cell fates. Thus, the different morphogenetic and differentiative behavior of neural crest subsets in vivo may result from earlier cell fate-specification events that generate developmentally distinct subpopulations that respond differentially to environmental cues.  相似文献

The interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) are found in a number of different locations in the gastrointestinal tract, where they form close associations with both muscle cells and nerve terminals. In this study we examined the embryological origin of ICC in the mouse intestine to determine whether they arise from the neural crest or from the intestinal wall. Segments of intestine were removed from embryonic mice either before or after the arrival of neural crest cells (the precursors of enteric neurons and glial cells) and transplanted under the renal capsule of host (adult) mice and allowed to develop for 18-41 days. In the mouse intestine, antibodies to c-kit protein selectively label ICC at a variety of locations, and antibodies to the NK1 receptor (the receptor for substance P) labels ICC at the level of the deep muscular plexus in the small intestine and a subpopulation of enteric neurons in the large intestine. The presence of neurons in the explants was examined using antisera to neuron-specific enolase, substance P, and calretinin. In segments of small and large intestine explanted after the arrival of neural crest cells, immunoreactive neurons and c-kit- and NK1-immunoreactive ICC were present with a distribution similar to that seen in control tissue at a similar developmental age. In segments of large intestine explanted before the arrival of neural crest cells, neurons were not present; however, c-kit-immunoreactive ICC were present in these aneuronal explants, indicating that ICC do not arise from the neural crest. The source of ICC in mammals is therefore likely to be the mesenchyme of the gut.  相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of modelling, control, and simulation of a mechanical system actuated by an agonist-antagonist musculotendon subsystem. Contraction dynamics is given by case I of Zajac's model. Saturated semi positive proportional-derivative-type controllers with switching as neural excitation inputs are proposed. Stability theory of switched system and SOSTOOLS, which is a sum of squares optimization toolbox of Matlab, are used to determine the stability of the obtained closed-loop system. To corroborate the obtained theoretical results numerical simulations are carried out. As additional contribution, the discussed ideas are applied to the biomimetic control of a DC motor, i.e., the position control is addressed assuming the presence of musculotendon actuators. Real-experiments corroborate the expected results.  相似文献

In a recent article, the authors (Miller & Shettleworth, 2007; see record 2007-09968-001) showed how the apparently exceptional features of behavior in geometry learning ("reorientation") experiments can be modeled by assuming that geometric and other features at given locations in an arena are learned competitively as in the Rescorla-Wagner model and that the probability of visiting a location is proportional to the total associative strength of cues at that location relative to that of all relevant locations. Reinforced or unreinforced visits to locations drive changes in associative strengths. Dawson, Kelly, Spetch, and Dupuis (2008; see record 2008-09669-009) have correctly pointed out that at parameter values outside the ranges the authors used to simulate a body of real experiments, our equation for choice probabilities can give impossible and/or wildly fluctuating results. Here, the authors show that a simple modification of the choice rule eliminates this problem while retaining the transparent way in which the model relates spatial choice to competitive associative learning of cue values. Does the speech motor control system use invariant vocal tract shape targets when producing vowels and semivowels? A 4-part theoretical treatment favoring models whose only invariant targets are regions in auditory perceptual space over models that posit invariant constriction targets is presented. Auditory target regions are hypothesized to arise during development as an emergent property of neural map formation in the auditory system. Furthermore, speech movements are planned as trajectories in auditory perceptual space. These trajectories are then mapped into articulator movements through a neural mapping that allows motor equivalent variability in constriction locations and degrees when needed. These hypotheses are illustrated using computer simulations of the DIVA model of speech acquisition and production.
