OBJECTIVE: The largest Italian asbestos cement factory had been active in Casale Monferrato until 1986: in previous studies a substantial increase in the incidence of pleural mesothelioma was found among residents without occupational exposure to asbestos. To estimate exposure to asbestos in the population, this study evaluated the presence of histological asbestosis and the lung burden of asbestos fibres (AFs) and asbestos bodies (ABs). METHODS: The study comprises the consecutive series of necropsies performed at the Hospital of Casale Monferrato between 1985 and 1988. A sample of lung parenchima was collected and stored for 48 out of 55 necropsies. The AF concentration was measured with a TEM electron microscope with x ray mineralogical analysis. The ABs were counted and fibrosis evaluated by optical microscopy. The nearest relative of each subject was interviewed on occupational and residential history. Mineralogical and histological analyses and interviews were conducted in 1993-4. RESULTS: Statistical analyses included 41 subjects with AF, AB count, and interview. Subjects without occupational exposure who ever lived in Casale Monferrato had an average concentration of 1500 AB/g dried weight (gdw); Seven of 18 presented with asbestosis or small airway lung disease (SAL). G2 asbestosis was diagnosed in two women with no occupational asbestos exposure. One of them had been teaching at a school close to the factory for 12 years. Ten subjects had experienced occupational asbestos exposure, seven in asbestos cement production: mean concentrations were 1.032 x 10(6) AF/gdw and 96,280 AB/gdw. Eight of the 10 had asbestosis or SAL. CONCLUSION: The high concentration of ABs and the new finding of environmental asbestosis confirm that high asbestos concentration was common in the proximity of the factory. Subjects not occupationally exposed and ever living in Casale Monferrato tended to have higher AB concentration than subjects never living in the town (difference not significant). The concentrations of ABs and AFs were higher than those found in other studies on nonoccupationally exposed subjects.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate alternative models and estimate risk of mortality from lung cancer and asbestosis after occupational exposure to chrysotile asbestos. METHODS: Data were used from a recent update of a cohort mortality study of workers in a South Carolina textile factory. Alternative exposure-response models were evaluated with Poisson regression. A model designed to evaluate evidence of a threshold response was also fitted. Lifetime risks of lung cancer and asbestosis were estimated with an actuarial approach that accounts for competing causes of death. RESULTS: A highly significant exposure-response relation was found for both lung cancer and asbestosis. The exposure-response relation for lung cancer seemed to be linear on a multiplicative scale, which is consistent with previous analyses of lung cancer and exposure to asbestos. In contrast, the exposure-response relation for asbestosis seemed to be nonlinear on a multiplicative scale in this analysis. There was no significant evidence for a threshold in models of either the lung cancer or asbestosis. The excess lifetime risk for white men exposed for 45 years at the recently revised OSHA standard of 0.1 fibre/ml was predicted to be about 5/1000 for lung cancer, and 2/1000 for asbestosis. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms the findings from previous investigations of a strong exposure-response relation between exposure to chrysotile asbestos and mortality from lung cancer, and asbestosis. The risk estimates for lung cancer derived from this analysis are higher than those derived from other populations exposed to chrysotile asbestos. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the risk of cancer due to occupational exposure to petroleum products in the Swedish transport and refinery industries. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study the cancer incidence in 4128 men and 191 women, who had worked for at least one year in the petroleum industry, was compared with the incidence in the general population. The job titles and employment times for each person were found in personal files in the industries. The men had on average worked in jobs exposed to petroleum for 11.6 years at the end of the observation period. The cases of cancer were identified by record linkage with the Swedish cancer register. RESULTS: In total there were 146 cases of cancer v 157.6 expected (standardised mortality ratio (SMR) 0.93 90% confidence interval (90% CI) 0.80 to 1.1). Operators at refineries had an increased risk of leukaemia (6 cases v 1.7 expected, 90% CI of relative risk (RR) 1.5 to 7.0). Five of the six cases had started to work at the refineries in the 1950s or later. No other significantly increased risk of cancer was found. Distribution workers had a decreased incidence of lung cancer (no cases, 90% CI of RR 0 to 0.4). CONCLUSIONS: Operators at Swedish refineries had an increased risk of leukaemia. A possible cause is exposure to benzene. There was no increased risk of leukaemia in distribution workers. Distribution workers had a decreased risk of lung cancer.  相似文献

Occupation and the risk of lung cancer in Uruguay   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to provide more information regarding the risk of lung cancer associated with asbestos, and other exposures in the Uruguayan work force. METHODS: This multisite case-referent study was part of a large project designed for evaluating the role of occupational exposures in cancer risk in Uruguay. According to the design employed, cases were a subset of the data base corresponding to a particular site (in this instance lung cancer), and they were compared with all other sites combined (referents). RESULTS: Significant increases in risk associated with workers in the construction industry were mainly observed for squamous-cell carcinoma. Asbestos, silica dust, and DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) exposure were also associated with increases in the risk of lung cancer. Pipefitters, bakers, and textile workers were also at increased risk of developing lung cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Workers employed in the construction industry, as well as those exposed to DDT may have an excess risk of lung cancer. These findings are particularly important in showing that developing countries like Uruguay display risk patterns of similar magnitude as those observed in developed communities.  相似文献

Diseases due to asbestos inhalation are not only a concern for occupational physicians, but also for general practicioners and pneumologists. The real or supposed risk has extended beyond the factories employing "primary asbestos workers" to thousands of people exposed to this material or simply working in buildings insulated with asbestos. The spectrum of asbestos-related diseases has changed: asbestosis (parenchymal fibrosis due to asbestos) tends to disappear, whereas the incidence of pleural lesions, which can be associated with lower cumulative exposures, increases. Patients with asbestos related diseases do not die any more from respiratory failure but from late neoplastic complications, such as mesothelioma and lung cancer. The lack of interest and of training in occupational medicine leads to an underrecognition and an underestimation of cancers due to asbestos by the physicians. Recent progresses in CT imaging and evaluations of exposure to fibers through mineralogical analysis of lung samples have led to improve the diagnostic approach of fiber-related diseases.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This study considers the cause-specific mortality from cancer among art glass workers employed in 17 industrial facilities in Tuscany, Italy. METHODS: A cohort of 3390 workers, 3180 men and 210 women, employed at least 1 year, was taken from company payrolls. It was followed between the year each factory started operation, mostly the mid-1950s, and 31 December 1993. The cause-specific expected mortality from cancer was computed for men relative to Tuscany rates, specified for gender, 5-year age groups, and calendar year. Separate analyses were carried out for the job title of maker and former and for batch mixers. RESULTS: For 3180 men, the observed mortality was above the expected for larynx [standardized mortality ratio (SMR) 166, 90% confidence interval (90% CI) 90-282], lung (SMR 123, 90% CI 100-151), stomach (SMR 105, 90% CI76-142), and brain (SMR 150, 90%CI 71-282) cancer. Increases for these causes were also found for the makers and formers. Mortality from larynx and lung cancer increased with latency, and significantly increased SMR values were observed for > or =21 years since first exposure. The increasing pattern was also present after adjustment for smoking. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed consistently increased mortality from larynx and lung cancer in the overall cohort and among makers and formers. Stomach and brain cancer was also increased in the overall cohort and among the makers and formers.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This article examines the credibility and policy implications of the "amphibole hypothesis," which postulates that (1) the mesotheliomas observed among workers exposed to chrysotile asbestos may be explained by confounding exposures to amphiboles, and (2) chrysotile may have lower carcinogenic potency than amphiboles. METHODS: A critical review was conducted of the lung burden, epidemiologic, toxicologic, and mechanistic studies that provide the basis for the amphibole hypothesis. RESULTS: Mechanistic and lung burden studies do not provide convincing evidence for the amphibole hypothesis. Toxicologic and epidemiologic studies provide strong evidence that chrysotile is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma. Chrysotile may be less potent than some amphiboles for inducing mesotheliomas, but there is little evidence to indicate lower lung cancer risk. CONCLUSIONS: Given the evidence of a significant lung cancer risk, the lack of conclusive evidence for the amphibole hypothesis, and the fact that workers are generally exposed to a mixture of fibers, we conclude that it is prudent to treat chrysotile with virtually the same level of concern as the amphibole forms of asbestos.  相似文献

Pleuropulmonary cancers are recognized asbestos-related diseases. Mesothelioma occurs almost uniquely in individuals exposed to asbestos whereas lung cancer is strongly associated with smoking. If the asbestos exposure is sufficient however, the incidence of lung cancer is higher than would be expected from the smoking effect alone. For lung cancer in asbestos workers, asbestosis is not a prerequisite for recognition as an occupation-related disease. The intensity and duration of exposure to asbestos are factors associated with higher risk of lung cancer. These factors can be estimated on the basis of the work history or, when necessary, by analyzing mineral dust from available lung tissues.  相似文献

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of occupational exposure to carcinogens in explaining the association between socioeconomic status and lung cancer. DESIGN: A prospective cohort study. Data on diet, other lifestyle factors, sociodemographic characteristics and job history were collected by means of a self administered questionnaire. Follow up for incident cancer was established by record linkage with a national pathology register and with regional cancer registries. SETTING: Population originating from 204 municipalities in The Netherlands. PARTICIPANTS: These comprised 58 279 men aged 55-69 years in September 1986. After 4.3 years of follow up there were 470 microscopically confirmed incident lung cancer cases with complete data on dietary habits and job history. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Estimation of occupational exposure to asbestos, paint dust, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and welding fumes was carried out by two experts, using information on job history from the baseline questionnaire. Socioeconomic status was measured by means of highest attained level of education and two indicators based on occupation. In the initial multivariate analyses of socioeconomic status and lung cancer, adjustment was made for age, smoking habits, intake of vitamin C, beta-carotene and retinol, and history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma. Additional adjustment for occupational exposure to the four carcinogens mentioned above did not change the inverse association between the level of education and lung cancer risk (initial model: RR highest/lowest level of education = 0.53; 95% CI 0.34, 0.82; additional model: RR highest/lowest level of education = 0.53; 95% CI 0.34, 0.84). Nor was the association between the two occupation based indicators of socioeconomic status and lung cancer risk influenced by occupational exposure to carcinogens. The effect of occupational exposure on the association between the level of education and lung cancer risk did not differ between ex-smokers and current smokers. CONCLUSIONS: Occupational exposure to asbestos, paint dust, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and welding fumes could not explain the inverse association between socioeconomic status and lung cancer risk. More research which explicitly addresses possible explanations for the association between socioeconomic status and lung cancer risk is needed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the fraction of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) that is attributable to work in the total adult population of the island of Montreal. METHODS: The population consisted of 1.1 million people 20-64 years of age, with 73.2% of men and 60.6% of women employed. The rates of first surgery for CTS were compared between occupational groups and the total adult population with the standardised incidence ratio (SIR) method. Rates of surgery for the island of Montreal were obtained from the provincial data base of payments. The occupational history was obtained from telephone interviews of a sample of surgical cases. The attributable fractions in exposed people were calculated with odds ratios (ORs) obtained from logistic regressions with non-manual workers as the control group. RESULTS: The surgical incidence of CTS was 0.9/1000 adults. SIRs for all manual workers were 1.9 (95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.4-2.5) in men and 1.8 (95% CI 1.4-2.2) in women, and the fractions attributable to work were 76% (95% CI 47-88) and 55% (95% CI 33-69), respectively. Seven occupational groups were identified as having excess risk of surgical CTS, with fractions attributable to occupation ranging from 75% to 99%. CONCLUSION: Among manual workers on the island of Montreal, 55% of surgical CTS in women and 76% in men was attributable to work. Increased risk of surgical CTS was found in seven occupational groups.  相似文献

As part of the "IARC International Register of Persons Exposed to Phenoxy Herbicides and Contaminants," a cohort of workers who manufacture and prepare chlorophenoxy herbicides was recruited in The Netherlands. The cohort comprised 2,310 workers from two plants, operated by different companies, who were followed during the periods 1955-1985 and 1965-1986, respectively. In 1963, there had been an industrial accident in one factory with concomitant release of dioxin into the environment. Loss to follow-up was 3%. Mortality data on 963 exposed and 1,111 nonexposed men were evaluated by external and internal comparison. Compared with national rates, total mortality (94 deaths, standardized mortality ratio [SMR] = 101; 95% confidence interval [CI], 82-124) and cancer mortality (31 deaths, SMR = 107; 95% CI, 73-152) for exposed workers were not significantly increased. A statistically insignificant increase was observed for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (2 deaths, SMR = 299; 95% CI, 36-1,078). No cases of soft-tissue sarcoma were encountered. There was no increase in either total mortality (25 deaths, SMR = 111; 95% CI, 72-163) or cancer mortality (10 deaths, SMR = 137; 95% CI, 66-252) among the 139 workers probably exposed to dioxins during the 2,4,5-trichlorophenol production accident or the subsequent clean-up operations. Compared with nonexposed workers, exposed workers did not exhibit a higher total mortality (rate ratio [RR] = 1.28; 95% CI, 0.89-1.82). Mortality due to all cancers (RR = 1.7; 95% CI, 0.9-3.4) and respiratory cancer (RR = 1.7; 95% CI, 0.5-6.3) was insignificantly elevated. These findings suggest that the increases in cancer mortality among workers exposed to phenoxy herbicides and chlorophenols may be attributable to chance. Lack of power prevented evaluation with respect to specific cancers.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Standardized proportionate mortality ratio (SPMR) was found to be 2.2 (95% CI = 1.3-3.5) for esophageal cancer (EC) among workers exposed to refractory brick dust in a large iron-steel complex in China. METHODS: A nested case-control design within a cohort of industrial workers. One hundred and twenty-five EC cases and 250 controls were identified from the death registry file. Interviews were conducted of the next of kin for past exposure information on job, domestic, and lifestyle factors. History of occupational exposure to various dusts was reconstructed from personnel files and by interviewing colleagues utilizing a job-exposure matrix. RESULTS: After adjusting for confounders, occupational exposure to silica dust was the most important risk factor among all variables investigated, with a 2.8-fold risk and a clear dose-response by length of exposure. Alcohol drinking (OR = 1.8) and coal cooking (OR = 2.0) were risk factors and high consumption of fruit diet (OR = 0.5) and meat diet (OR = 0.6) were protective factors. CONCLUSIONS: The relationship between occupational exposure to silica dust and the risk of EC found in an earlier SPMR study was confirmed. Ingestion of silica particles after lung clearance may increase the risk of EC among workers exposed to silica.  相似文献

In most industrialised countries mortality from malignant mesothelioma has risen steeply since about 1950 and is likely to go on doing so well into the next century. This increase, which has lagged behind the level of asbestos use by some 30 or more years, is most evident in men but less clear in women. Amphibole asbestos fibre types, crocidolite in particular, carry the greatest risk and chrysotile the least. Studies in chrysotile miners and millers, in whom the overall frequency of mesothelioma is low suggest the risk is mainly determined by the presence of contamination with amphibole fibres in the tremolite series. There is wide variation in mesothelioma incidence geographically and occupationally. Regions with the highest rates are those where crocidolite is mined; within countries, dockyard areas are most affected, probably because of amphibole use for insulation in naval ships. Occupations at high risk, apart from crocidolite miners and millers, include shipyard and insulation workers and those employed in construction trades. Data on exposure-response are scanty although occupational cohort studies suggest that risk is related to both duration and intensity of exposure. More specific confirmation of an exposure-response relationship has been obtained from lung fibre analysis in a limited number of case-referent studies.  相似文献

From epidemiologic studies in several countries, passive smoking has been associated with increased risk for lung cancer, respiratory diseases, and coronary heart disease. Since the relative risks derived from those studies are weak, i.e. relative risk less than two, we investigated whether poorer diets and less healthy lifestyles might act as confounders and be correlated with having a smoking husband on a cross-cultural basis. Characteristics of never-smoked wives with or without smoking husbands were compared between 530 women from Hong Kong, 13,047 from Japan, 87 from Sweden, and 144 from the U.S. In all four sites, wives with smoking husbands generally ate less healthy diets. They had a tendency to eat more fried food but less fruit than wives with nonsmoking husbands. Other healthy traits, e.g. avoiding obesity, dietary cholesterol and alcohol, or taking vitamins and participating in preventive screening were also less prevalent among wives with smoking husbands. These patterns suggest that never-smoked wives with smoking husbands tend to share the same less healthy dietary traits characteristic of smokers, and to have dietary habits associated with increased risk for lung cancer and heart disease in their societies. These results emphasize the need to take into account the potential confounding effects of diet and lifestyle in studies evaluating the health effects of passive smoking, especially since it is known that the current prevalence rates of smoking among men is indirectly associated with social class and education in affluent urban societies.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Injury is the leading cause of death in the male working population of Brazil. An important fraction of these deaths are work related. Very few cohort studies of steel workers, and none from developing countries, have reported on mortality from injuries. This paper analyses mortality from work and non-work related injuries among Brazilian steel workers. METHODS: Deaths during employment from 1 January 1977 to 30 November 1992 were analysed in a cohort of 21,816 male steel workers. Mortality rates specific for age and calendar year among the workers were compared with those of the male population of the state where the plant is located. Work related injuries were analysed by comparing the mortality rates for different subgroups of the cohort. RESULTS: The number of deaths (391) was less than half that expected based on death rates of the general population. Over 60% (242) of deaths were due to injuries. Mortality from most causes was substantially below that in the general population, but that from unintentional injury, was 50% above that of the general population. Standardised mortality ratios (SMRs) were highest for the youngest and the oldest employees and for labourers and clerical workers. Mortality from motor vehicle injury was twice that expected from population rates (SMR = 209, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 176-244). There was a 67% fall in the age adjusted mortality from occupational injuries in the study period. CONCLUSION: The healthy worker effect in this cohort was greater than that commonly found in studies of occupational groups in developed countries, probably because of a greater socioeconomic gap between employed and unemployed populations in Brazil, and unequal distribution of health care resources. Mortality was especially high for motor vehicle injuries. The fall in mortality from occupational injuries during the study period was probably due to improvement in safety standards, increased automation, and better medical care. There is a need to investigate risk factors for unintentional injuries among steel workers, especially those due to motor vehicle injuries. Prevention of occupational and nonoccupational injuries should be a main priority in Brazil.  相似文献

A high prevalence of pleural plaques (41.5%, 148/357) was found during a mass screening for lung cancer in Matsubase town in 1988. The inhabitants of this town were carefully studied each year from 1988 to 1993. The vast majority (81.2%) of inhabitants over the age of 20 years underwent chest roentgenography at least once during this period. Pleural plaques were detected by CT in 938 subjects, which is 17.3% of those studied and 4.1% of the total population. A total of 89 had an occupational history of asbestos exposure, 64 (71.9%) of whom had pleural plaques. However, these subjects with occupational exposure accounted for only 6.8% of the 938 subjects, and therefore most of the pleural plaques seemed to have been caused by general environmental exposure. The incidence of plaques was greater in older subjects: among those in the seventh decade of life it was more than eight times higher than among those in the fourth decade of life. Anthophyllite was detected in the main asbestos mill. The concentrations of asbestos fibers in the air and water near the old asbestos mills and factories were not high. The death rates and the adjusted mortality rates due to lung cancer in Matsubase were lower than in surrounding towns and lower than in Kumamoto prefecture as a whole. These results indicate that there is now no environmental contamination by asbestos fibers in Matsubase town. No cases of malignant mesothelioma have been confirmed in this town during the past 17 years.  相似文献

Although female breast cancer rates are lower in China than in Western countries, rates have been rising rapidly in China. This increase may be due to changes in established breast cancer risk factors, but it is possible that exposure to occupational and environmental carcinogens in Shanghai also have contributed to the rise in incidence. We used data collected by the Shanghai Cancer Registry and the Chinese Third National Census to study the risk of breast cancer by occupation and by occupational exposures. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were used to compare observed cases to expected numbers of cases, based on the incidence rates for Shanghai and the number of women in each occupation according to the 1982 census. Statistically elevated SIRs for breast cancer were seen for a number of professional occupational categories, with the greatest risk seen among scientific research workers (SIR = 3.3). Administrative clerks, political and security personnel, and makers of rubber and plastics products also had significant excesses. Significant deficits of risk were seen for the categories of production and related workers, construction workers, and transportation equipment operators. For specific occupations, the highest SIRs were observed among doctors of Chinese-Western medicine (SIR = 14.7, 95% CI = 5.9-30.3) and doctors of Chinese medicine (SIR = 7.2, 95% CI = 4.4-11.4). We also found excesses among teachers at each level of education, librarians, clerical workers, electrical and electronic engineers, nurses, lab technicians, accountants and bookkeepers, rubber manufacturing products makers, weavers, and knitters. SIRs were significantly elevated for high probability of exposure to organic solvents (SIR = 1.4). For benzene exposure, we found significant excesses for overall exposure (SIR = 1.1) and for medium level of exposure (SIR = 1.3). There was no evidence of an association between risk and electromagnetic fields (EMF) exposure. Based on a small number of exposed, SIRs were elevated for both medium probability and high level of exposure to pesticides. The elevations in occupations reported here support some previous reports. Our finding of an increased risk associated with benzene also has been reported previously; the finding for organic solvents is new. However, the literature on the risk of breast cancer related to occupational exposures is limited and there is no consistent body of literature for any of the exposures studied here. Further, many comparisons were made and the problem of multiple hypothesis testing cannot be ignored in a survey such as ours.  相似文献

Four hundred and twenty-three wives of 671 men with cancer of the penis were compared with 444 wives of 569 men who did not have this disease. The risk among the wives of patients with cancer of the penis of preinvasive and invasive cancer of the neck of the uterus was 1.75 (95% CI 0.42-7.37).  相似文献

The study quantifies the influence of smoking on mortality in Denmark and computes measures for the individual risk. Mortality due to lung cancer among Danish women is now the highest in Europe. Smoking-attributable deaths among men amounted to 3% in 1945, 26% in 1985, and 25% in 1995; the proportion is lower among women, but is increasing considerably. In 1995 in the age-group 35-69 years such deaths make up the same proportion among men and women. The risk that a 35-year old Dane dies before attaining the age of 70 due to other than smoking-attributable causes has decreased since 1945, most significantly among women. Women have experienced a considerable increase in smoking-attributable mortality over the last 20 years, increasing the total risk of a 35 year-old of dying before reaching the age of 70. In 1995 a little over 13,000 of a total of a little less than 63,000 deaths could be attributed to smoking. Smoking is responsible for a significant part of the adverse development in Danish life expectancy.  相似文献

A cohort study was carried out in order to evaluate the cancer risk in the asbestos-cement industry workers. The cohort consisted of workers employed in four asbestos-cement plants. One of those plants was established in 1924, the other three in the 1960s and 1970s. Currently only two of these plants continue their production. The plants used mainly chrysotile asbestos as well as crocidolite and amosite. Amphibolite asbestos was used before the mid-nineteen eighties in production of pressure pipes utilising about 15% of the total quantity of asbestos used. The measurements of the asbestos fibre concentration at work-sites have been taken occasionally since the mid 1980s, thus, the determination of a cumulative dose for individual persons in the cohort and the evaluation of the dose-effect relationship were not feasible. It could only be supposed that the concentrations at the preparatory work-site during first years of the plants' operation accounted for several tens fibres/cm3 in the production that employed the dry method. The cohort consisted of workers employed in the plant for at least three months between beginning of the plant during the post-war period, and 1980, that is during the period when amphibolite asbestos was in use. The retrospective observation was completed on 31 December 1991. The analysis of the death risk by causes was based on a standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) calculated using the person-years method. Statistical significance of SMRs was assessed by means of Poisson distribution one-sided test. The general population of Poland was used as the reference population to estimate the death risk. The cohort comprised 4,712 persons (3,563 males and 1,149 females). Of this number 4,500 persons (3,405 males and 1,095 females) were followed. The cohort availability were 95.5%. Male mortality, both total (473 deaths; SMR = 83) and due to malignant neoplasms (108 deaths; SMR = 86) was lower than in the general population. An excess of deaths from neoplasm of the pleura was by about 23 times higher (5 deaths; SMR = 2,288) and from neoplasm of the large intestine by two times higher (7 deaths; SMR = 214). Among females (41 deaths; SMR = 50) death risk was lower than in the reference population. At a low level of total mortality from neoplasms (13 deaths; SMR = 52) a statistically significant excess of deaths from neoplasm of the pleura (2 deaths; SMR = 2,112) was observed. In the plants investigated the analysis revealed a considerably diversified mortality from asbestos-related neoplasms. The incidence of pleura mesothelioma should be attributed to the use of considerable quantities of crocidolite asbestos and high concentrations of fibres in the air in plants II and IV, particularly during the first years after their establishment. In view of a long period of latency the excess of this neoplasm can be expected till 2020.  相似文献
