Editorial.
This editorial introduces the current issue of the Journal of Educational Psychology. This issue embarks on a year-long celebration through which we recognize 100 years of our parent organization, the American Psychological Association, in the business of psychology. The Journal's contribution to the celebration is the following: In each 1992 issue, we will publish one or more special articles, special in the sense that these articles have been solicited rather than submitted and in the sense that they reflect on selected aspects of the science and status of educational psychology as we approach the 21st century. In addition, each issue will contain a centennial-year surprise—a reprinted article from an earlier issue of the Journal. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Groups and individuals often shift their preferences following discussion of an issue. Explanations for such shifts typically invoke either informational or normative influence processes. The former refers to influence based on sharing of facts or persuasive arguments about the issue, and the latter refers to conformity to implicit decision norms and others' preferences. We investigated conditions under which one or the other influence mode predominates during discussion. Groups discussed and made decisions on either an intellective issue (attempting to discover the true or correct answer) or a judgmental issue (deciding on the moral, valued, or appropriate position), given either a unanimity or a majority decision rule. The largest shift in preference was found for the judgmental issue decided by unanimity rule. The least satisfaction with both the process and the outcome of discussion was found in groups that decided a judgmental issue under majority rule. Content analysis showed that, as expected, the intellective issue elicited more informational than normative influence, and the judgmental issue provoked more normative than informational influence. This pattern was stronger under unanimity rule than under majority rule. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

This article describes the special issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (JPSP), which is the result of a joint undertaking by the three sections of JPSP. This makes it different from previous special sections or issues of the journal in that rather than relying on the generous services of a guest editor, the same editorial team that handles the regular journal issues has originated this special issue, as well, thus conveying a sense of "business as usual." Our major reason for the present initiative was to highlight the essential unity of personality and social psychology as a field of science. The topic choice for the present special issue was dictated by its relevance and interest to the field of personality and social psychology as a whole, across its various partitions and subdivisions. The articles in the special issue amply reflect the naturalness with which the self and social identity theme transcends the boundaries of JPSP sections. This comment reviews the comments of London, Halleck, Coyne, and Stokes on "Socially Reinforced Obsessing: Etiology of a Disorder in a Christian Scientist." In their haste to address a hypothetical ethical issue, London, Halleck, and Coyne overlooked temporal aspects of the case study. Additionally, London confused the arbitrariness-of-psychopathology issue with the main issue, Halleck misinterpreted the concept of "therapist neutrality," and Coyne's restatement of Halleck compounded previously made errors. A counterargument to the views presented by a representative of the Christian Science church is also made. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

This special issue of Group Dynamics: Theory, Research, and Practice is dedicated to group-based interventions for trauma survivors. Given the severely traumatic and widespread nature of the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001, it is hoped that this special issue will play a timely and illustrative role in facilitating the design and implementation of effective postdisaster interventions. More generally, as illustrated by the breadth of treatments contained in this special issue, group-based interventions constitute a promising modality for providing efficient and efficacious postdisaster intervention to a wide variety of trauma-exposed populations.
