Measurements have been made on the mechanical properties of largediameter tubes made of 09G2S, 14G2SAF, and 17G1S steels and on welded joints in them at strain rates of 200 sec–1 and 113–293 K. Fivefold microspecimens 1.2 mm in diameter have been employed. The parameters have been determined in the temperature-rate dependence of the Yaroshevich yield point, lower brittleness temperature, and fracture resistance as affected by the ferrite diameter. A method is proposed for predicting the brittleness range from the dependence of the notch bottom narrowing B on the generalized parameter = Sf/yt/i for a Menaget specimen.Translated from Problemy Prochnosti, No. 4, pp. 43–50, April, 1994.

The stress exponent of steady state creep,n, and the internal ( i) and effective stresses ( e) have been determined using the strain transient dip test for a series of polycrystalline Al-Mg alloys creep tested at 300° C and compared with previously published data. The internal or dislocation back stress, i, varied with applied stress,, but was insensitive to magnesium content of the alloy, being represented by the empirical equation i=1.084 1.802. Such an applied stress dependence of i can be explained by using an equation for i of the form i (dislocation density)1/2 and published values for the stress dependence of dislocation density. Values of the friction stress, f, derived using the equation e/=(1–c) (1– f/), indicate that f is not dependent on the magnesium content. A constant value of f can best be rationalized by postulating that the creep dislocation structure is relatively insensitive to the magnesium content of the alloy. On leave from Engineering Materials Department, University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario N9B 3P4, Canada.

The two-site model is developed for the analysis of stress relaxation data. It is shown that the product of d In (– )/d and (- i) is constant where is the applied stress, i is the (deformation-induced) internal stress and = d/dt. The quantity d In ( )/d is often presented in the literature as the (experimental) activation volume, and there are many examples in which the above relationship with (- i) holds true. This is in apparent contradiction to the arguments that lead to the association of the quantity d In (– )/d with the activation volume, since these normally start with the premise that the activation volume is independent of stress. In the modified theory presented here the source of this anomaly is apparent. Similar anomalies arise in the estimation of activation volume from creep or constant strain rate tests and these are also examined from the standpoint of the site model theory. In the derivation presented here full account is taken of the site population distribution and this is the major difference compared to most other analyses. The predicted behaviour is identical to that obtained with the standard linear solid. Consideration is also given to the orientation-dependence of stress-aided activation.

The interfacial properties of a glass-ceramic matrix composite (SiC/CAS) were determined from single-fibre push-out tests using the interfacial test system. The coefficient of friction, , the residual clamping stress, c, and fibre axial residual stress, z , were extracted by fitting the experimental stress versus fibre-end displacement curves using the models of Hsueh, and Kerans and Parthasarathy. Using Hsueh's model, the intrinsic interfacial frictional stress (=c) was found to be 11.1±3.2 MPa, whereas by using Kerans-Parthasarathy's model it was found to be 8.2±1.5 MPa. Comparisons between these models are included, together with a discussion of data analysis techniques.Nomenclature z Axial fibre residual stress (Pa) - * Effective clamping stress (Pa) - c Residual clamping stress (Pa) - p Poisson's effect-induced clamping stress (Pa) - d 0 Debond stress in the absence of residual stresses (Pa) - d Experimental debond stress (Pa) - Compressive applied stress (Pa) - Interfacial shear stress (Pa) - u Fibre-end displacement (m) - h Debond length (m) - r Fibre radius (m) - E f Fibre Young's modulus (Pa) - E m Matrix Young's modulus (Pa) - v f Fibre Poisson's ratio (dimensionless) - v m Matrix Poisson's ratio (dimensionless) - f Fibre volume fraction (dimensionless) - k Parameter (dimensionless) - D Parameter (dimensionless) - Interfacial coefficient of friction (dimensionless) - G i Interface toughness (J m–2) - C m Load-train compliance (m N–1)

Ductile L20-type wires and+L12-type duplex wires with high strengths and large elongation in the Ni-Al-Fe and Ni-Al-Co ternary systems have been manufactured directly from the liquid state by an in-rotating-water spinning method. The wire diameter was in the range 80 to 180m and the average grain size was 2 to 4m for the wires and 0.2 to 1.0m for the+ wires. y, f and p of the wires were found to be about 360 to 760 MPa, 560 to 960 MPa, and 0.2 to 5.5%, respectively, for the Ni-Al-Fe system, those of the+ wires were about 395 to 660 MPa, 670 to 1285 MPa, and 3.5 to 17%, respectively, for the Ni-Al-Fe system, and about 260 to 365 MPa, 600 to 870 MPa, and 4.0 to 7.0%, respectively, for the Ni-Al-Co system. Cold-drawing caused a significant increase in y and f and the values attained were about 1850 and 2500 MPa, respectively, for Ni-20Al-30Fe and Ni-25Al-30Co wires drawn to about 90% reduction in area. The high strengths, large elongation and good cold-workability of the melt-quenched and+ compound wires have been inferred to be due to the structural change into a low-degree ordered state containing a high density of phase boundaries, suppression of grain-boundary segregation and refinement of grain size.

An analysis of the physical significance of the Griffith criterion G from the viewpoint of the first law of thermodynamics (thermodynamic approach) and the viewpoint of the thermofluctuation-theory of strength (kinetic approach) makes it possible to conclude that the criterion is not the fracture criterion it is usually thought to be. It is actually a safe stress and, thus, is preferably treated as a criterion of the indestructibility of a material. This conclusion is supported by calculations of the quantity G (Griffith formula) and the safe G and critical c stresses (formulas of thermofluctuation theory) for a thin plate containing transverse edge cracks and loaded uniaxially. Organic glass (polymethylmethacrylate), inorganic glass (silicate plate glass), and a crystalline polymer (capron) are used as examples to show that the value of G is equal or close to the safe stress 0 but lower than the critical stress c by one or two orders of magnitude.Moscow. The tensile stress relaxation behaviour of hot-drawn low density polyethylene, (LDPE), has been investigated at room temperature at various draw ratios. The drawing was performed at 85° C. The main result was an increase in relaxation rate in the draw direction, especially at low draw ratios when compared to the relaxation behaviour of the isotropic material. This is attributed to a lowering of the internal stress. The position of the relaxation curves along the log time axis was also changed as a result of the drawing, corresponding to a shift to shorter times. The activation volume, , varied with the initial effective stress 0 * according to 0 * 10kT, where 0 * =0i, is the difference between the applied initial stress, 0, and the internal stress i. This result supports earlier findings relating to similarities in the stress relaxation behaviour of different solids.

AC electrical properties of 410 nm think 30 at.wt% Cu-70 at.wt% GeO2 thin films are reported for the frequency range 104 to 106 Hz and temperature range 150 to 425 K. The loss tangent (tan ) and the dielectric loss (/0) are found to show striking minima around a cut-off frequency 105 Hz. In the lower frequency range (105 Hz), 1() s T n is obeyed with s (0 to 0.51) increasing as a function of temperature and n (0.10 to 0.14) showing a very weak temperature dependence. In the higher frequency region (105 Hz), 1() and /0 increase sharply leading to the quadratic behavior of 1() with s equal to 2. These processes are discussed by analyzing an equivalent circuit which shows that at lower frequencies, the effects of series resistance in leads and contacts can be neglected, while at higher frequencies such effect give rise to spurious 2 dependance for the conductance. A weakly activated AC conductivity and a frequency exponent s that increases with increasing temperature suggest that the low frequency behavior originates from carrier migration by tunneling process.

The square of the ratio of the abraded bending strength, d, to the unabraded bending strength, , is proposed as a measure of the resistance to crack propagation in ceramic materials. Data for various porcelains, glass-ceramics, and glasses showed that d is essentially constant and that (d/)2 decreased rapidly with increase of the unabraded strength.

The fatigue and fracture behaviour of two titanium alloys, the near-alpha IMI-685 and alpha-beta IMI-318, were studied in the machined and polished (MP) as well as the machined, polished and shot (glass-bead) peened (MPS) conditions. Glass-bead peening reduced the room-temperature as well as the high-temperature (450°C) fatigue life of alloy IMI-685 at high stress amplitudes, a, approaching the proof stress, ps, of the material (LCF region). When the applied stress amplitude (0–770 MPa, HCF region) was comparable to the peen-induced peak longitudinal residual stress, LP, i.e. (LP/a)=0.92, an improvement in the room-temperature fatigue life of IMI-685 was observed. When the (LP/a) ratio was less than this value, decreases in the fatigue life were seen. The room-temperature fatigue behaviour of IMI-318 at high stress amplitudes was similar to that of IMI-685. The decrease in the fatigue life of this alloy, at a stress amplitude (770 MPa) where improvement was observed for IMI-685, could be attributed to the higher relaxation of peen-induced residual stresses in IMI-318 compared with IMI-685. Glass-bead peening improved the hightemperature (450°C) fatigue life of IMI-685 at a low stress amplitude (465 MPa; (a/PS)=0.87). The crack-initiation sites in the MP and the MPS conditions were at the surface for both the alloys. However, fracture in the surface layers of the alloys appeared more brittle in the peened (MPS) rather than in the unpeened (MP) condition.

The variation of the d.c. electrical conductivity, , with composition and temperature was investigated for glasses of the Ge-In-Se system. The results indicate a decrease in the activation energy for electrical conductivity, E, and an increase in on introduction of indium into Ge-Se glasses. The changes in E and with composition (selenium content in the glasses) are identical for the Gex In5 Se95–x and Gex In8Se92–x families. The results have been traced to the conduction controlled by charged defects in these chalcogenide glasses. The changes in E and have been explained by a shift in the Fermi level, being brought by the introduction of indium.

With the cohesive process zone representation of the micro-mechanistic processes that are associated with fracture as a basis, the author is involved in a wide-ranging research programme, the objective being to extend the fracture mechanics methodology for sharp cracks to blunt flaws, so as to take credit for the blunt flaw geometry. In earlier work, a Mode I fracture initiation relation has been derived, subject to the restriction that the process zone size s is small compared with the flaw depth (length) and any characteristic dimension other than the flaw root radius . The relation gives the critical elastic flaw-tip peak stress pcr, and has been derived using a two-extremes procedure, whereby the separate, and indeed exact, solutions for small and large s/ values are blended together to give an all-embracing relation that is valid for all s/ values. pcr is expressed in terms of the process zone material parameters and geometrical parameters but, for a wide range of flaw geometry parameters, pcr essentially depends on only one geometrical parameter . This paper provides underpinning for the general thrust of the two-extremes procedure by appealing to exact results for the complete spectrum of s/ values from analyses of appropriate Mode III models. Results obtained by applying the two-extremes procedure are shown to be in very good agreement with the exact results.

The creep of uranium dioxide has been investigated as a function of grain size. At high stresses, when creep is controlled by dislocation movement, grain boundaries exert a strengthening effect and this strengthening is correlated with the Hall-Petch equation. The degree of strengthening diminishes with increases in temperature. At lower stresses, when creep is controlled by mass transport, grain boundaries exert a weakening effect owing to the reduction in diffusion path length as grain size is reduced. In this range behaviour is correlated with the Nabarro-Herring equation with stress replaced by an effective stress E=–0 where 0 is a threshold stress for diffusional creep associated with the limitation of the ability of boundaries to emit and absorb vacancies. 0 appears to decrease as grain size is increased.

Based on a theoretical model developed previously by the authors in Part II of this series for a single fibre pull-out test, a methodology for the evaluation of interfacial properties of fibre-matrix composites is presented to determine the interfacial fracture toughness G c, the friction coefficient , the radial residual clamping stress q o and the critical bonded fibre length z max. An important parameter, the stress drop , which is defined as the difference between the maximum debond stress d * and the initial frictional pull-out stress fr, is introduced to characterize the interfacial debonding and fibre pull-out behaviour. The maximum logarithmic stress drop, In(), is obtained when the embedded fibre length L is equal to the critical bonded fibre length z max. The slope of the In()-L curve for L bigger than z max is found to be a constant that is related to the interfacial friction coefficient . The effect of fibre anisotropy on fibre debonding and fibre pull-out is also included in this analysis. Published experimental data for several fibre-matrix composites are chosen to evaluate their interfacial properties by using the present methodology. On leave at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong.

Shallow cavity flows driven by horizontal temperature gradients are analysed over a range of Rayleigh numbersR and Prandtl numbers , whereR is comparable in size to the aspect ratioL(1). Eigenvalue calculations show the existence of a critical Prandtl number R > R c (), below which the parallel core-flow structure is destroyed for Rayleigh numbersR>R c(). For other Rayleigh numbers and Prandtl numbers the horizontal scale of influence of the end walls of the cavity is determined.

The washboard frequency of the moving vortex lattice in untwinned YBa2 Cu3 O6.93 may be observed through mode-locking to an externally applied ac current of frequency ext. The interference between and ext results in jumps in the dc current-voltage characteristics when and ext are harmonically related1. The interference effect disappears in the vortex liquid state. The Hall conductivity xy below Tc in YBCO contains contributions2 from a positive quasiparticle (qp) term (H) and a negative vortex term (1/H). The qp term is surprisingly large well below Tc and implies a large gap anisotropy and a long qp mean free path (mfp). The thermal Hall effect3 xy is closely related to the qp xy; xy is produced by asymmetric scattering of qp by pinned vortices. The qp mfp at H = 0, extracted from xy and extended to low T by xy, increases remarkably from 90 Å at Tc to more than 0.5m at 22 K.

The report considers the stress fatigue limit D, the fatigue to tensile strength ratio D/Rm, and the deformation fatigue limit D of pure metals. For FCC and some HCP metals there exists a linear correlation between fatigue limit and tensile strength. The fatigue limit and the fatigue ratio D/Rm depend upon the homologous temperature. The fatigue ratios of BCC metals are higher than the fatigue ratios of other metals at room temperature as is also true for metals with nearly the same homologous temperature. The deformation fatigue limit decreases rapidly when Th - 0.5 and Th 1. When Th = 1 then D = 0, D = 0 and D/Rm = 0. The deformation fatigue limits of metals belonging to the same subgroup of the periodic element system and having, similar homologous temperatures at room temperature are very similar.

Steady-state creep behaviour of a 25 wt % Cr-20 wt % Ni stainless steel without precipitates was studied in the stress range 9.8 to 39.2 MPa at temperatures between 1133 and 1193 K. The results of stress-drop tests indicate that, in the steady-state creep region, diffusion-controlled recovery creep is dominant. Such recovery creep can be accounted for in terms of the composition of the internal stress, i=s+c, except in the case of fine-grained specimens where d<80 m, whered is the mean grain diameter, s is possible to reduce easily and is comparable to the driving stress for creep, and c is the persistent stress field due to metastable substructure. In the fine-grained specimens, it is suggested that the steady-state creep is dominantly controlled by grain boundaries.

We report on the measurement of the frequency-dependent complex permittivity, ()=()-i(), over the frequency range, 30 MHz to 6 GHz, of silicon wafers and of thin dielectric films formed on silicon. Measurements, as a function of temperature and time treatments, were obtained by means of an HP Network Analyzer and dielectric probe and the resulting ()and()plots for the silicon wafers are shown to have a Debye-type [1] profile, thereby indicating that the associated polarization mechanism is of the orientational variety.
