This paper proposes a novel duobinary-mode-splitting scheme that uses wideband phase-shift-keying (PSK)/amplitude-shift-keying (ASK) conversion for modulation and detection of bandwidth-reduced return-to-zero (RZ) modulation formats. We have first demonstrated that the proposed scheme greatly simplifies the modulation process of the duobinary carrier-suppressed RZ format (DCS-RZ) based on baseband binary nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) modulation. We also proposed carrier-suppressed RZ differential-phase-shift-keying format (CS-RZ DPSK) as a novel bandwidth-reduced RZ format by applying the proposed scheme in the detection process. These novel RZ formats are shown to be very useful for dense wavelength-division multiplexed (DWDM) transport systems using high-speed channels, over 40 Gb/s, with spectrum efficiencies higher than 0.4 b/s/Hz. We demonstrate that the proposed modulation and detection scheme greatly simplifies the DWDM transmitter and receiver configuration if the periodicity of the optical PSK/ASK conversion filter equals the WDM channel spacing. The large tolerance of the formats against several fiber nonlinearities and their wide dispersion tolerance characteristics are tested at the channel rate of 43 Gb/s with 100-GHz spacing. The novel CS-RZ DPSK format offers higher nonlinearity tolerance against cross-phase modulation than does the DCS-RZ format.  相似文献

Dynamics of the chirped return-to-zero modulation format   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We numerically simulated long-distance, high-bit-rate, wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) transmission in dispersion-managed systems. We investigated return-to-zero (RZ) and nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) modulation formats with amplitude and phase modulation. Consistent with earlier experiments, we find that the chirped return-to-zero (CRZ) modulation format has significant advantages over the NRZ modulation format in WDM systems. We elucidate the physical reasons for these advantages. We then discuss, in detail, the dynamics of the CRZ systems, carefully distinguishing noise effects, single-channel nonlinear effects, and multichannel nonlinear effects. In this way, we provide a physical basis for understanding CRZ systems that should prove useful for future system design. In particular, we find that the pulse evolution is dominated by linear dispersion and that the spread in the eye diagrams is dominated by signal-spontaneous beat noise, just like in linear systems. However, we also find that symmetric dispersion compensation performs better than asymmetric dispersion compensation, due to the effects of nonlinearity. Additionally, we find that interchannel nonlinearities spread the eye diagrams without changing the dynamical behavior. Thus, the system is quasilinear in the sense that its properties resemble those of linear systems, but nonlinearity plays an important role  相似文献

A comparison of carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) and single sideband return-to-zero (SSB-RZ) formats is made in an attempt to find the optimum modulation format for high bit rate optical transmission systems. Our results show that CSRZ is superior to return-to-zero (RZ) and SSB-RZ with respect to signal degradation due to Kerr nonlinearities and chromatic dispersion in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) as well as in single-channel 40-Gb/s systems over standard single-mode fibers (SSMF). It is shown that CSRZ enables a maximum spectral efficiency of approximately 0.7 (b/s)/Hz in a N×40 Gb/s WDM system with equally polarized channels. Furthermore, the CSRZ format in N×40 Gb/s WDM systems shows no further signal degradation compared to single-channel transmission  相似文献

The authors demonstrate the potential of using POLarization Shift Keying (POLSK) modulation format combined with semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission systems. The constant intensity of the POLSK modulation format allows for substantial removal of cross-gain-modulation impairments in SOAs so that practical amplifier spacing values (more than 100 km) are demonstrated in various different experimental configurations. Record WDM transmission experiments at 10 Gb/s by using SOA-based amplification are presented in short and medium reach system architectures using either single mode fiber or nonzero dispersion shifted fiber  相似文献

In this paper,we describe the generation, detection, and performance of frequency-shift keying (FSK) for high-speed optical transmission and label switching.A non-return-to-zero (NRZ) FSK signal is generated by using two continuous-wave (CW) lasers, one Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM),and one Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer (MZDI).An RZ-FSK signal is generated by cascading a dual-arm MZM,which is driven by a sinusoidal voltage at half the bit rate.Demodulation can be achieved on 1 bit rate through one MZDI or an array waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer with balanced detection. We perform numerical simulation on two types of frequency modulation schemes using MZM or PM,and we determine the effect of frequency tone spacing (FTS) on the generated FSK signal. In the proposed scheme,a novel frequency modulation format has transmission advantages compared with traditional modulation formats such as RZ and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK),under varying dispersion management. The performance of an RZ-FSK signal in a 4 × 40 Gb/s WDM transmission system is discussed. We experiment on transparent wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and in a highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNDSF) for a 40 Gb/s RZ-FSK signal. The feasibility of all-optical signal processing of a high-speed RZ-FSK signal is confirmed. We also determine the receiver power penalty for the RZ-FSK signal after a 100 km standard single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission link with matching dispersion compensating fiber (DCF),under the post-compensation management scheme.Because the frequency modulation format is orthogonal to intensity modulation and vector modulation (polarization shift keying),it can be used in the context of the combined modulation format to decrease the data rate or enhance the symbol rate.It can also be used in orthogonal label-switching as the modulation format for the payload or the label. As an example,we propose a simple orthogonal optical label switching technique based on 40 Gb/s FSK payload and 2.5 Gb/s intensity modulated (IM) label.  相似文献

Advanced Optical Modulation Formats   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Fiber-optic communication systems form the high-capacity transport infrastructure that enables global broadband data services and advanced Internet applications. The desire for higher per-fiber transport capacities and, at the same time, the drive for lower costs per end-to-end transmitted information bit has led to optically routed networks with high spectral efficiencies. Among other enabling technologies, advanced optical modulation formats have become key to the design of modern wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) fiber systems. In this paper, we review optical modulation formats in the broader context of optically routed WDM networks. We discuss the generation and detection of multigigabit/s intensity- and phase-modulated formats, and highlight their resilience to key impairments found in optical networking, such as optical amplifier noise, multipath interference, chromatic dispersion, polarization-mode dispersion, WDM crosstalk, concatenated optical filtering, and fiber nonlinearity.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss the realization of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission at high spectral efficiency. For this experiment, coherent polarization-division multiplexing--orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (PDM-OFDM) is used as a modulation format. PDM-OFDM uses training symbols for channel estimation. This makes OFDM easily scalable to higher level modulation formats as channel estimation is realized with training symbols that are independent of the constellation size. Furthermore, because of its well-defined spectrum OFDM requires only a small guard band between WDM channels. The dependence of the number of OFDM subcarriers is investigated with respect to the interchannel linear crosstalk. At a constant data rate the number of OFDM subcarriers is estimated to achieve lower linear crosstalk in order to achieve higher spectral efficiency. We then experimentally demonstrate dense WDM (DWDM) transmission with 7.0-b/s/Hz net spectral efficiency using 8 $,times,$65.1-Gb/s coherent PDM-OFDM signals with 8-GHz WDM channel spacing utilizing 32-quadrature-amplitude-modulation subcarrier modulation. Successful transmission is achieved over 240 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) spans with hybrid erbium-doped fiber amplifiers/Raman amplification.   相似文献

We present a new optical modulation format chirp-free return-to-zero differential phase shift keying (CF-RZ-DPSK), which enables wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) transmission at 10 Gb/s/ch at a channel spacing of 100 GHz over 3000 km without significant impairments due to cross-phase modulation (XPM). A transmitter setup is presented, which allows a simple implementation of CF-RZ-DPSK with two Mach-Zehnder modulators in push-pull operation. The robustness toward XPM is shown theoretically with the help of a simple analytical model for the XPM-induced phase modulation. The superior performance of CF-RZ-DPSK over other modulation formats [RZ-ampfitude shift keying (ASK), nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ)-DPSK, and NRZ-ASK, respectively] is clarified. Finally, simulation results for CF-RZ-DPSK in comparison to RZ-ASK show the superior performance of the newly proposed modulation format in a dense WDM setup  相似文献

Sophistication of the transmission format for 40-Gb/s/ch WDM networks is indispensable. In long-haul transmission applications, the selection of transmission format should be a principal issue. Recently, we have proposed several transmission formats including carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CS-RZ) and duo-binary-carrier-suppressed (DCS-RZ), in so doing addressing the issue of superior performance versus fiber nonlinearity and spectral efficiency. The special spectrum structure of these formats enables a novel mode-splitting detection scheme. The scheme realizes a variety of applications in 40-Gb/s/ch transmission; including expansion of dispersion tolerance, automatic dispersion compensation, and BER improvement. We achieved 1.6 times. expansion of dispersion tolerance of 43-Gb/s DCS-RZ signals by introducing mode-splitting in the receiver. By applying the mode-splitting scheme for CS-RZ signals, we also demonstrated precise chromatic dispersion measurement with its sign detection without the need for any dithering operation and its application to automatic dispersion compensation at 43-Gb/s CS-RZ transmission.  相似文献

In this paper we propose an improved all optical chromatic dispersion (CD) monitoring method applicable to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems with intensity or phase modulation format. This method can operate over a much larger bandwidth and CD monitoring range and is insensitive to optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD). These improvements are achieved by utilizing a wavelength tunable laser as the probe to maintain the appropriate phase-matching condition and a loop-back controlled tunable CD compensator to discriminate CD distortions from PMD and OSNR influences. Numerical simulations show that by this method the operational bandwidth and CD monitoring range can be expanded to cover C + L bands and ±1600 ps/nm, respectively, for different modulation formats and the sensitivity is higher than the other methods proposed before.  相似文献

An optical modulation format generation scheme based on spectral filtering and frequency-to-time mapping is experimentally demonstrated. Many modulation formats with continuously adjustable duty radio and bit rate can be formed by changing the dispersion of dispersion element and the bandwidth of shaped spectrum in this scheme. In the experiment, non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal with bit rate of 29.41 Gbit/s and 1/2 duty ratio return-to-zero (RZ) signal with bit rate of 13.51 Gbit/s are obtained. The maximum bit rate of modulation format signal is also analyzed.  相似文献

We propose a fiber dispersion management scheme for large-capacity long-haul wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission systems that considers not only second- but also third-order dispersion characteristics using transmission fibers with opposite dispersion signs. It eliminates the waveform distortion of WDM signals that originates from the existence of third-order dispersion, which is a constraint placed on WDM capacity in conventional dispersion management, while reducing the interchannel interaction caused by the interplay of fiber nonlinearity and second-order dispersion. Design concept of the scheme is discussed to show the feasibility of using actual fiber parameters. An experimental investigation on transmission performance regarding the signal pulse format, nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) and return-to-zero (RZ), and interchannel interaction caused by four-wave mixing (FWM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) is described for optimizing WDM system performance. It is experimentally shown that RZ pulse transmission is possible without significant spectral broadening over a wide wavelength range in dispersion managed fiber spans. Using these results together with a wideband optical amplifier gain-bandwidth management technique, yields long-distance WDM transmission with the capacity of 25×10 Gb/s over 9288 km

Duobinary formats are today considered as being one of the most promising cost-effective solutions for the deployment of 40-Gb/s technology on existing 10-Gb/s WDM long-haul transmission infrastructures. Various methods for generating duobinary formats have been developed in the past few years but to our knowledge their respective performances for 40-Gb/s WDM transmission have never been really compared. In this paper, we made an extensive numerical evaluation of the robustness of these different types of duobinary transmitter to accumulation of ASE noise, chromatic dispersion, PMD but also to single-channel and WDM 40-Gb/s transmission impairments on standard single-mode fiber. A numerical evaluation of the ability of duobinary format for mixed 10/40-Gb/s WDM long-haul transmission with 50-GHz channel spacing is also led, on both standard single-mode and LEAF fibers, and compared to DQPSK format. In order to clearly identify the limiting transmission effects on each of these two fiber types, the assessment of the performance of a 50-GHz spaced WDM 40-Gb/s long-haul transmission using either duobinary or DQPSK channels only is implemented at last.   相似文献

Recent papers have shown that space-time (ST) coding using continuous phase modulation has a number of advantages relative to linear modulation, among which is its constant envelope, which allows transmission with inexpensive and power-efficient Class C amplifiers. The present paper presents a particularly simple variant, ST coding based on minimum shift keying (MSK), an offset format. ST codes with offset modulation give much better performance than quadrature phase shift-keying (QPSK), for the same number of states, and the MSK ST decoding computational load is smaller than that of QPSK by a ratio that improves exponentially with the number of transmitter antennas. The relationship between offset and nonoffset modulation formats is explored and the effect of pulse shape is shown explicitly.  相似文献

We investigate equalizers for electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) of dispersion limited optical fibre communication links in combination with different modulation formats. We show that the performance of conventional equalizers including feedforward equalizer (FFE) and decision feedback equalizer (DFE) are fundamentally limited by the nonlinearity of square-law detection of the photodiode in direct detection systems. Advanced modulation formats such as differential phase shift keying (DPSK) and optical duobinary further enhance this kind of nonlinearity and degrade further FFE/DFE performance. However, nonlinear FFE–DFE and maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) take into account the mitigation of nonlinear inter symbol interference (ISI) and hence can achieve much better performance. We show that in contrast to other modulation formats, optical single sideband modulation results in approximately linear distortions after detection and thus a simple linear FFE equalizer can achieve good compensation.  相似文献

We analyze the performance through numerical simulations of a new modulation format: serial dark soliton (SDS) for wide-area 100-Gb/s applications. We compare the performance of the SDS with conventional dark soliton, amplitude-modulation phase-shift keying (also known as duobinary), nonreturn-to-zero, and return-to-zero modulation formats, when subjected to typical wide-area-network impairments. We show that the SDS has a strong chromatic dispersion and polarization-mode-dispersion tolerance, while maintaining a compact spectrum suitable for strong filtering requirement in ultradense wavelength-division-multiplexing applications. The SDS can be generated using commercially available components for 40-Gb/s applications and is cost efficient when compared with other 100-Gb/s electrical-time-division-multiplexing systems.  相似文献

We have investigated the wavelength conversion techniques for differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) modulation formats in 10 Gb/s transmission systems, compared with the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) modulation format. For the wavelength conversion of DPSK modulation formats, we employed the wavelength converters based on the four-wave mixing (FWM) in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) and the frequency comb generated by phase modulation. The power penalty at 10/sup -9/ bit error rate was used as a measure of the system performance degraded by the wavelength conversion. Our simulation results show that the DPSK modulation formats have a smaller power penalty than the NRZ modulation format for the wavelength conversion using the FWM effect in an SOA due to a much lower pattern effect. However, as the wavelength conversion uses the frequency comb generated by phase modulation, it has a similar power penalty compared with the NRZ modulation format. It is also shown that the DPSK modulation formats are possible to obtain the power penalty less than 0.4 dB for both wavelength conversion techniques.  相似文献
