The onset of transmission loss in four single-mode tapers is shown to coincide with the taper slope exceeding the critical slope angle at which fundamental mode cutoff occurs. This implies that the primary loss mechanism in single-mode fiber tapers is cutoff of the fundamental mode from the core. A secondary loss mechanism of coupling to the modes of a coaxial outer waveguide is also observed and modeled. Implications for fused fiber couplers are discussed. 相似文献

A theoretical investigation of the anticipated properties of optically end-pumpedQ -switched fiber lasers is reported. This analysis stresses the effect of the transverse structure of the interacting pump and signal (guided) waves, in particular of the fiberV number, on the device performance. In Nd : YAG single crystal fibers thresholds as low as a fraction of a milliwatt may be achieved; pulses with peak powers of hundreds of watts and subnanosecond widths may be generated under laser diode pumping conditions. 相似文献

We present a detailed investigation into the sensitivity of long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) as a function of temperature, strain, and surrounding refractive index, with particular attention to the higher order cladding modes and the possibilities for ultrasensitive sensors. From a general theoretical analysis, we identify a general sensitivity factor which offers new physical insight into LPFG behavior and represents a useful design aid in conjunction with a set of measurand-specific sensitivity factors. Our analysis reveals the existence of turning points in the mode dispersion characteristics at which ultrasensitive operation may be obtained. In an extensive set of coordinated experiments, we verify the theoretical predictions with close agreement and provide demonstrations of the device behavior close to the turning points. Alternative sensor schemes for temperature, strain, and refractive index based, respectively, on measurement of the dual resonance characteristic of the modes and on the transmission characteristics close to the turning points, utilizing higher order modes of the LPFG, are presented. Splice loss factors of single-mode fiber splicing lacking core axis alignment were analyzed quantitatively. The optimum splice conditions were also investigated in detail. It was seen that the dominant splice signal-loss factors are core deformation caused by fiber axis discrepancy and core axis misalignment caused by core eccentricity. To suppress average splice loss to less than 0.1 dB, average core eccentricity suppression to less than 0.35 μm is necessary. A novel method for setting fiber endface gaps accurately and quickly is proposed that helps to realize the optimum condition. This method is based on fiber endface image detection using photodiodes, and it has a quick setting time of 5 s and a high accuracy with a setting error of 0.5 μm. A fusion splice machine manufactured based on the present endface setting method was developed and evaluated. As a result, an average splice loss of 0.012 dB was successfully achieved 相似文献

利用1 550 nm光纤激光器搭建了一个同带泵浦环形腔掺铥光纤激光器,并对其光谱输出特性进行了研究。在1 550 nm激光泵浦下,1.6 m掺铥光纤自发辐射谱覆盖1 800~1 900 nm范围,3 dB带宽大于60 nm;通过在腔内插入隔离器,获得了线宽小于0.2 nm的激光输出,中心波长在1900 nm附近;进一步在腔内加入FP腔,获得了可调谐的窄线宽输出,光谱调谐范围达60 nm,覆盖从1 840~1 900 nm的光谱范围,激光线宽仅为0.07 nm。另外,在腔内使用通信波段用FP腔,同样获得了较宽调谐范围的窄线宽输出。输出光谱分为1 820~1 850 nm和1 865~1 915 nm两个区域,调谐范围共达80 nm。结合使用2 000 nm FP腔的可调谐光谱范围,该激光器在1 820~1 915 nm的范围都可以获得激光输出,与掺铥光线的自发辐射谱基本相符。 相似文献

采用国产半导体器件,组建了半导体光纤环形腔激光器(FRSLs)的实验装置及相应的测试系统,系统地研究了FRSLs的输出和调谐特性.结果表明,已实现高速调制情况下的动态单纵模调谐,并获得波长调谐范围大于36nm的稳定光脉冲输出.确立了FRSLs的阈值特性、输出功率等物理参量与振荡波长之间的关系,提出通过控制分光比来优化和兼顾FRSLs的调谐范围及输出功率.实验结果较好地与理论模拟结果相吻合,为进一步改善FRSLs的性能指标提供了实验依据.同时,这些分析与结论对于相关结构类型的激光器设计也具有一定的参考价值. 相似文献

This paper describes the return loss characteristics for four typical contact type connectors: perpendicular and oblique endface connectors employing either physical contact or contact via index matching material. The high index layer on the polished fiber endface and the index matching material, which are important connector parameters, are investigated by measuring the return loss from one perpendicular fiber endface coated with the material and by etching the fiber endface. It is useful to apply two materials with different refractive indices to derive the refractive index and thickness of high index layers on perpendicular fiber endfaces. The index matching material we use has a refractive index of 1.467 at 20°C and a thermal coefficient of -2.9×10-4/°C at 1.3 μm. We performed return loss calculations and experiments of the four contact type connectors. We derive an analytical theory for the noise figure of an undepleted and lossless fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA). Both the signal and the wavelength converted idler are investigated. Our theory is applicable for both an ideal pump power source, as well as a noisy one. We find that a noisy pump source can severely degrade the performance at high gain due to the stochastic gain-variations the signal and idler will experience. The theory is compared with Monte Carlo simulations of the FOPA and an excellent agreement is obtained. Simulations in the gain-depleted region show the possibility to reach below quantum-limited, phase-insensitive amplification for single channel transmission. 相似文献

The transmission characteristics of the wide-aperture optical fiber taper (OFT) have been determined experimentally under diffuse and parallel light excitation. Power transmission efficiency versus the normalized radius of the excited input aperture of the OFT has been obtained in both cases. The OFT forms a specific output intensity distribution provided that a uniform excitation of all the OFT modes is ensured. Power transmission efficiency of more than 50% can be obtained at an appropriate normalized radius of the incident laser beam. We present the results of an experimental investigation of the transfer characteristics of a fiber ring resonator for various values of the resonator finesse. In particular, we measure the spectral dependence of the intensity transmission and the induced phase shift in the undercoupled, critically coupled, and overcoupled regimes. We also demonstrate tunable optical (true time) group delay via a fiber ring resonator and show that a high finesse is unnecessary. Our laboratory results are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. 相似文献
