Two Kraft-pulp bleaching effluents from a sequence of treatments which include chlorine dioxide and caustic soda were treated by catalytic wet-air oxidation (CWAO) at T=463 K in trickle-bed and batch-recycle reactors packed with either TiO2 extrudates or Ru(3 wt%)/TiO2 catalyst. Chemical analyses (TOC removal, color, HPLC) and bioassays (48-h and 30-min acute toxicity tests using Daphnia magna and Vibrio fischeri, respectively) were used to get information about the toxicity impact of the starting effluents and of the treated solutions. Under the operating conditions, complex organic compounds are mostly oxidized into carbon dioxide and water, along with short-chain carboxylic acids. Bioassays were found as a complement to chemical analyses for ensuring the toxicological impact on the ecosystem. In spite of a large decrease of TOC, the solutions of end products were all more toxic to Daphnia magna than the starting effluents by factors ranging from 2 to 33. This observation is attributed to the synergistic effects of acetic acid and salts present in the solutions. On the other hand, toxicity reduction with respect to Vibrio fischeri was achieved: detoxification factors greater than unity were measured for end-product solutions treated in the presence of the Ru(3 wt%)/TiO2 catalyst, suggesting the absence of cumulative effect for this bacteria, or a lower sensitivity to the organic acids and salts. Bleach plant effluents treated by the CWAO process over the Ru/TiO2 catalyst were completely biodegradable.  相似文献

Lymphocyte differentiation, maturation and peripheral functions are affected by the thymic protein hormone thymulin. Mercury at very low concentrations has been seen to impair some lymphocytic functions causing subclinical manifestations in exposed workers. The present study was performed to test in vitro the effect of mercury on the production kinetics of thymulin using cultures of whole thymuses from young mice. Exposure to mercury (10(-8) M and 10(-6) M) added to the cultures, reduced kinetic thymulin production at all time intervals considered (1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 h) as compared to kinetic thymulin production of thymuses from young control mice. After the first hour the inhibition is more evident at the highest mercury concentration. Thymulin production decreased by 70, 74, 82 and 86% and by 55, 66, 73 and 81% for mercury concentrations of 10(-6) M and 10(-8) M, respectively, after 2, 4, 5 and 6 h. Mercury toxic effect on thymulin kinetics may be directly exerted to thymulin synthesis in epithelial cells, although it is less dramatic than that of cycloheximide (CHX), known as a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis in such cells. The toxic effect of mercury on thymic endocrine activity might cause the subclinical effects on cell-mediated immunological status observed in mercury exposed workers.  相似文献

In order to better asses the influence of organic matter on the bioavailability of hydrophobic organic contaminants, the effect of algae and POM of bacterial origin on the bioaccumulation of benzo[a]pyrene in Daphnia magna was evaluated. The bioaccumulation was monitored with increasing concentrations of particulate organic matter (POM) and dissolved organic matter (DOM). In all experiments, the presence of POM greatly reduced the bioaccumulation of benzo[a]pyrene. The reduction was more pronounced in the presence of algae, for which we observed a 99%-reduction effect in the presence of 6 x10 (5) cell/mL (equivalent to 5.3 mg C/L). The bioaccumulation of benzo[a]pyrene was decreased by 49% by organic matter of bacterial origin at 4.7 mg C/L. Assuming that benzo[a]pyrene was partitioned between water, DOM and POM and supposing that D. magna accumulated free benzo[a]pyrene via respiration and POM-bond benzo[a]pyrene via ingestion, bioaccumulation data allowed to estimate the dietary uptake rate of benzo[a]pyrene as well as partitioning coefficients K(POC) and K(DOC). Despite the ingestion of contaminated particles, we could not observe any dietary uptake of benzo[a]pyrene in daphnids. We verified, as usually supposed, that the bioaccumulation of benzo[a]pyrene to D. magna occurs mainly via direct contact. Very high partitioning coefficients (log K(POC) between 5.2 and 6.2) were estimated. This study pointed out the great influence of biogenic organic matter on the fate and the bioavailability of benzo[a]pyrene in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

Mercury is a longstanding concern in Maritime Canada due to high levels of contamination in a number of fish and bird species. The recycled component of past releases of anthropogenic mercury may be a significant source of ongoing pollution in many areas. Historical information on mercury releases can be used to quantify past and present anthropogenic contamination. We present an inventory of historical mercury emissions from anthropogenic sources in Maritime Canada for the years 1800-1995. Long-term trends in mercury emissions and the significance of the cumulative burden of mercury released from local sources are discussed. Emissions are calculated using both historical monitoring data and the application of emission factors. The nature of current anthropogenic sources of mercury is quite different than it was several decades ago when many of the existing policies governing mercury pollution were created. Our inventory illustrates that many of the most significant sources in the past such as the chlor-alkali industry, paint containing mercury additives, and pharmaceuticals, have been largely phased out with fossil fuel combustion and waste disposal remaining as the most significant modern sources. Atmospheric emissions in Maritime Canada peaked in 1945 (> 1,750 kg year-1), and again between 1965 and 1970 (> 2,600 kg year-1). Cumulative releases of mercury from anthropogenic sources for the years 1800-1995 were between 115 and 259 t to the atmosphere alone, and 327-448 t when discharges to wastewater and effluents were included. Assuming that only 0.2% (Nriagu, 1994.) of these releases become part of the recycled fraction of current fluxes, we estimate that between 570 and 900 kg Hg year-1 is deposited in Maritime Canada from past anthropogenic sources. Modern sources within Maritime Canada contribute at least 405 kg year-1 to the total annual deposition of 1.71 t over the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, leaving approximately 735 kg year-1 from natural sources and long-range contamination. Further study is needed to verify these estimates and clarify the significance of natural and long-range sources of mercury in Maritime Canada.  相似文献

Daphnia magna and Brachydanio rerio are important test organisms in toxicity tests. The bioaccumulation of zinc in these species was investigated in two semistatic experiments in synthetic freshwater with a zinc concentration of 250 μg 1−1. Fishes were fed with polluted or unpolluted Daphnia magna to determine the significance of zinc accumulation from contaminated natural food.Daphnia magna accumulates zinc to a high extent within days. Uptake from food particles substantially contributes to the zinc accumulation in filter-feeding Daphnia; their zinc content strongly depends on the total but not on the dissolved zinc concentration in water.Zinc concentration of Brachydanio rerio increases only to a small extent during the 5 weeks accumulation time. They accumulate no additional zinc from the food source. In unpolluted and polluted Brachydanio a significant negative correlation exists between whole body zinc concentration and body dry weight.  相似文献

Inhaled depleted uranium (DU) aerosols are recognised as a distinct human health hazard and DU has been suggested to be responsible in part for illness in both military and civilian populations that may have been exposed. This study aimed to develop and use a testing procedure capable of detecting an individual's historic milligram-quantity aerosol exposure to DU up to 20 years after the event. This method was applied to individuals associated with or living proximal to a DU munitions plant in Colonie New York that were likely to have had a significant DU aerosol inhalation exposure, in order to improve DU-exposure screening reliability and gain insight into the residence time of DU in humans. We show using sensitive mass spectrometric techniques that when exposure to aerosol has been unambiguous and in sufficient quantity, urinary excretion of DU can be detected more than 20 years after primary DU inhalation contamination ceased, even when DU constitutes only approximately 1% of the total excreted uranium. It seems reasonable to conclude that a chronically DU-exposed population exists within the contamination 'footprint' of the munitions plant in Colonie, New York. The method allows even a modest DU exposure to be identified where other less sensitive methods would have failed entirely. This should allow better assessment of historical exposure incidence than currently exists.  相似文献

A new early warning system for monitoring the quality of water was developed using the information conveyed by the continuous electric organ discharges of the tropical fish Apteronotus albifrons (Gymnotiformes, family Apteronotidae). The principle is based on the time characterisation of the electric signal emitted by the fish and uses the fact that the frequency and the form of the signal vary as a function of the physico-chemical quality of the ambient water. Eight test fish were individually confined in a heat-proof test chamber in which a continuous water current, thermo-regulated at 27°C, was maintained. The electric signal sampled over 1 s periods were amplified. The computer processed the signals and their frequencies and determined the coordinates of the points where the temperatures were recorded. The results of the A. albifrons electrical activity were then visualised on a visual display unit. Subsequent mathematical processing helped to detect unusual electrical behaviour (crossing of lower and upper bounds). To illustrate the principle of this new early warning system, the electric response of the A. albifrons exposed to cyanide was tested and compared with the detection thresholds of other biological early warning systems. A. albifrons is able to detect a cyanide concentration of 34.6 μg l−1 in less than half an hour. The recorded results suggest that this new biomonitor corresponds very well with the requirements of warning stations for surface waters subject to cyanide pollution.  相似文献

An accurate and precise method is described for the direct determination of Cd in wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages by electrothermal atomization-atomic absorption spectrometry (ETA-AAS). The graphite furnace program was optimized and samples were pretreated with nitric acid and pentoxide vanadium in a digestion block at 120°C for 90 min. The results obtained were validated against microwave acid sample digestion. The analytical detection limit was 0.5 pg. The proposed method was applied to determine Cd in 134 samples of 10 different alcoholic beverages. The mean values ranged from 0.10 to 15.38 μg/l in wine, from not detectable to 0.80 μg/l in beer, and from not detectable to 11.52 μg/l in other alcoholic beverages such as cider, brandy, rum, whisky, gin, anisette, liquor and spirits. The wide variability of the results obtained emphasizes the multiplicity of factors than can influence the presence of Cd in these products. Because alcoholic beverages are widely consumed, they contribute a large fraction of cadmium intake, and therefore, strict control of this element is advisable.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the static acute toxicity of aniline, p-chloro-m-cresol and 2(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy) propionic acid (silvex) to daphnids (Daphnia magna) and bis(2-chloroethoxy)methane and 2-sec-butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol (dinoseb) to both daphnids and fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas). These data were needed to fulfill requirements established in the NPDES Permit (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) issued to the Michigan Division of The Dow Chemical Co. (Midland, Mich., U.S.A.) by the State of Michigan. Where appropriate, water quality-based effluent limitations could be recommended based on the acute toxicity data generated during this study. The results of the acute toxicity tests indicated that bis(2-chloroethoxy)methane was practically non-toxic to both daphnids and fathead minnows (LC50 values of 201 and 184 mg l−1, respectively); additionally, silvex was also found to be practically non-toxic to daphnids (LC50 value > 140 mg l−1). Aniline was highly toxic and p-chloro-m-cresol moderately toxic to daphnids, with calculated LC50 values of 0.17 and 2.0 mg l−1, respectively. Dinoseb was highly toxic both to daphnids and fathead minnows, with reported LC50 values of 0.24 and 0.17 mg l−1, respectively.  相似文献

Environmental Risk Assessment of chemical products and effluents within EC countries require the use of cost effective standardized toxicity tests that in most cases are restricted to acute responses to high doses. Thus, subtle ecological effects are underestimated. Here we propose a short-term one day Daphnia magna feeding inhibition test as a cost effective and ecological relevant sublethal bioassay. The sensitivity and reliability of the proposed bioassay was tested in the laboratory against standardized bacteria, algae growth, D. magna and fish acute toxicity test by using 16 chemical mixture x water type combinations that included four different water types fortified with four complex chemical mixtures. Water types included ASTM hard water and three selected effluents diluted 1/10 in water to mimic worse field situations that many overexploited arid river ecosystems suffer during summer months when effluents are discharged into them with little dilution. The results obtained denoted a greater sensitivity of the proposed feeding bioassay in 51 out of 65 tests performed with an average sensitivity 50 fold greater than that of the standardized tests. The greater differences were obtained for mixtures that included narcotic chemicals and the lowest differences for those containing pesticides. Furthermore, feeding responses to the studied contaminant mixtures behaved differently to increasing TOC content than those based on bioluminescent bacteria and algae. Increasing TOC coming from sewage treated effluents decrease toxicity to the latter bioassays but increased those of D. magna feeding bioassays. These results empathize the need to include additional bioassays to monitor more accurately and realistically the toxicity of effluents or surface waters dominated by effluent discharges, a quite common situation in America and Mediterranean arid regions.  相似文献

Epidemiology studies of recreational waters have demonstrated that swimmers exposed to faecally-contaminated recreational waters are at risk of excess gastrointestinal illness. Epidemiology studies provide valuable information on the nature and extent of health effects, the magnitude of risks, and how these risks are modified or associated with levels of faecal contamination and other measures of pollution. However, such studies have not provided information about the specific microbial agents that are responsible for the observed illnesses in swimmers. The objective of this work was to understand more fully the reported epidemiologic results from studies conducted on the Great Lakes in the US during 2003 and 2004 by identifying pathogens that could have caused the observed illnesses in those studies. We used a Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) approach to estimate the likelihood of pathogen-induced adverse health effects. The reference pathogens used for this analysis were Norovirus, rotavirus, adenovirus, Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia lamblia, Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella enterica, and Escherichia coli O157:H7. Two QMRA-based approaches were used to estimate the pathogen combinations that would be consistent with observed illness rates: in the first, swimming-associated gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses were assumed to occur in the same proportion as known illnesses in the US due to all non-foodborne sources, and in the second, pathogens were assumed to occur in the recreational waters in the same proportion as they occur in disinfected secondary effluent. The results indicate that human enteric viruses and in particular, Norovirus could have caused the vast majority of the observed swimming-associated GI illnesses during the 2003/2004 water epidemiology studies. Evaluation of the time-to-onset of illness strongly supports the principal finding and sensitivity analyses support the overall trends of the analyses even given their substantial uncertainties.  相似文献

The bioaccumulation of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) into Daphnia magna from two natural humic waters (one lake water and one bog water), and two humus preparations (Nordic Reference fulvic acid (Nordic FA) and a lyophilized concentrate) of the same aquatic origin was measured by using several dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations for each sample. The partition coefficient (Kp) of BaP to the humus content of the water was determined by an equilibrium dialysis technique. In all four samples, an increase in humus concentration decreased the bioavailability of BaP in a logarithmic manner. The Nordic FA and the natural untreated humic water, from the same source as the water used for isolation of Nordic FA, gave a similar DOC bioaccumulation response and similar Kp values. The difference between the two natural humic waters was obvious, both in the accumulation experiments and the Kp values. The assumption that the total bound fraction of organic pollutant is not available for D. magna is not fully supported by this study.  相似文献

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Acinetobacter baumannii are major opportunistic waterborne pathogens causing hospital-acquired infections. Copper-silver ionization has been shown to be effective in controlling Legionella colonization in hospital water systems. The objective was to determine the efficacy of copper and silver ions alone and in combination in eradicating P. aeruginosa, S. maltophilia and A. baumannii at the concentration applied to Legionella control. Kill curve experiments and mathematical modeling were conducted at copper and silver ion concentrations of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08 mg/L, respectively. The combinations of copper and silver ions were tested at concentrations of 0.2/0.02 and 0.4/0.04 mg/L, respectively. Initial organism concentration was ca. of 3 x 10(6)cfu/mL, and viability of the test organisms was assessed at predetermined time intervals. Samples (0.1 mL) withdrawn were mixed with 10 microL neutralizer solution immediately, serially diluted and plated in duplicate onto blood agar plates. The culture plates were incubated for 48 h at 37 degrees C and enumerated for the cfu (detection limit 10 cfu/mL). The results showed all copper ion concentrations tested (0.1-0.8 mg/L) achieved more than 99.999% reduction of P. aeruginosa which appears to be more susceptible to copper ions than S. maltophilia and A. baumannii. Silver ions concentration of 0.08 mg/L achieved more than 99.999% reduction of P. aeruginosa, S. maltophilia and A. baumannii in 6, 12 and 96 h, respectively. Combination of copper and silver ions exhibited a synergistic effect against P. aeruginosa and A. baumannii while the combination exhibited an antagonistic effect against S. maltophilia. Ionization may have a potential to eradicate P. aeruginosa, S. maltophilia and A. baumannii from hospital water systems.  相似文献

In the northern part of Pisa Province (Tuscany, Italy), the use of lichens as both airborne trace element biomonitors and air quality bioindicators is described. The following elements were analysed in Xanthoria parietina: As, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, V, Zn and Hg, and the results are compared with those we previously obtained in Livorno Province (Tuscany) using the same lichen species. The results identify spots of different environmental metal contamination and air quality. Median values of Pb, V and Ni concentrations were much lower than those of Livorno Province, with maximum values even nine times lower. Arsenic contamination was also lower, while Cd, Hg and Zn levels were similar in the two areas. In Pisa Province, the highest levels of contamination were recorded for Zn, Pb, Cr and Ni, and a degree of agreement was found between air quality and metal concentrations in lichens. The air quality in Pisa Province is better than in Livorno Province, even if the different climatic and orographic features of the two areas may influence the presence of lichen species and thus an assessment of air quality.  相似文献

Recent studies have suggested that the ability of a surfactant to enhance the bioavailability of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC) requires the formation of surfactant hemi-micelles on the bacterial cell surface and subsequent partitioning of HOC into the hemi-micelles. However, the studies did not provide direct evidence of HOC partitioning into surfactant hemi-micelles on the bacterial cell surface. In this study, direct evidence is provided to demonstrate that the nonionic surfactant Brij 30 forms hemi-micelles on the bacterial cell surface and that phenanthrene sorption at the bacterial surface is enhanced by the surfactant. These results are in agreement with the current theory describing surfactant-enhanced HOC bioavailability. This enhanced bioavailability is put into context with microbial kinetics and system partitioning processes, and it is demonstrated that the addition of surfactant can enhance, have no effect, or inhibit HOC biodegradation depending upon surfactant concentration and microbial growth rate. Understanding these non-linear relationships between surfactant-enhanced HOC bioavailability, biodegradation kinetics, and system partitioning will assist in the design and implementation of surfactant-enhanced bioremediation programs.  相似文献

A contaminated groundwater system in the carbonate terrain of Missouri is investigated to determine the extent to which contamination evidenced in a seriously polluted spring originates from nearby wastewater disposal or sanitary landfill operations. Three diagnostic criteria, nitrogen:phosphorus ratios, chemical response to rainfall variation and correspondence of dilution ratios for conservative pollutants clearly indicate the landfill to be the principal source. Lithium bromide tracer testing clearly established hydraulic connection between the landfill and spring where rhodamine WT proved inappropriate. Convective-dispersion analysis of LiBr output profiles was carried out with one-dimensional analytical solutions to transport equations. In addition, extended equilibrium calculations of calcite solubility plus mass-balance dilution ratio calculations are applied to questions of chemical transport. Our analysis provides a quantitative overview of the principal processes taking place in this contaminated system. It also develops and elaborates new, generally applicable diagnostic procedures for pollution source identification. Implications concerning landfill siting and design are presented in conclusion.  相似文献

This study determined nickel (Ni) bioaccessibility in weathered smelter-contaminated soils, separately for particle-sized fractions using two in vitro methods: simulated gastrointestinal digestion (PBET) and PBET followed by absorption by Caco-2 cells. Relative bioavailability of Ni in soils was determined in vivo using rats, validating in vitro estimates; a mineralogical basis of variation in bioavailability/bioaccessibility among soils was explored. In vitro assays identified the same difference in bioaccessibility for Ni among particle size fractions. PBET estimates were more precise, thus likely to be more useful in discerning differences among soils. In vivo bioavailability for Ni was below limit of detection for the small soil particles, and 31% and 56% for the larger particles. The relative bioavailability calculated from this work suggests that risk from ingesting Ni-contaminated soils could be overestimated by between 2- and 50-fold if the estimates of exposure are not adjusted for the lower bioavailability of weathered Ni originating from smelter emissions. The overestimation that would occur by using total Ni is greatest for the particle size that is most likely to adhere to the hands of children, demonstrating the importance of particle-size separation of soils for bioavailability determination and risk assessment.  相似文献

Standard ISO method for chlorophyll a quantification (extraction into ethanol, spectrophotometrical quantification at 665 and 750 nm), spectrofluorometry (reader for 96 wells, excitation 410 nm, emission 670 nm), and a submersible fluorescence probe for in situ phytoplankton quantification (excitation 410, 525, 570, 590, and 610 nm, emission 685 nm) were compared in different freshwater environments-reservoirs and rivers. The ISO method is accepted as a standard method but requires sample handling and transport to the laboratory. Spectrofluorometry is a sensitive method, even for natural phytoplankton populations. Nevertheless, it cannot be recommended for the quantification of cyanobacterial water blooms because colonial and filamentous species such as Microcystis, Anabaena, or Aphanizomenon display unacceptable variability (18-33%). The submersible probe featured high correlation with a standard ISO method (r=0.97, P<0.05). This probe can provide the selective measurement of technologically important phytoplankton groups like cyanobacteria, diatoms, green algae, and cryptophytes in lake vertical profiles of up to 100 m. The limitation of this instrument is the possible reabsorption of the light signal, e.g. in the presence of humic substances, or dense algal blooms. The use of submersible probes for in situ phytoplankton quantification can be recommended as a sensitive tool for water management, especially in the case of drinking water resources.  相似文献
