Manufacture of soaps from distilled fatty acids of palm oil (PO) and palm kernel oil (PK) is a well-established technology in Malaysia. Data on quality and characteristics of various blends of PO/PK fatty acid-based (palm-based) soaps made in Malaysia are not available, however. In view of this, the study described in this paper was undertaken. Eleven blends of palm-based bar soaps were made, and their properties were evaluated. There was an increase in the acid value of blended raw materials with increasing amounts of PK fatty acids. The iodine value and titer (°C) of blended raw materials, however, bear an inverse relationship with the amount of PK fatty acids. As expected, the hardness of the soap bars from the various blends increased with increasing PK fatty acid. Total fatty matter ranged from 76–85%, free caustic content was 0.1%, and sodium chloride content was 0.3–0.4%. Characteristics of soap blends made for this study were comparable with those from other countries. Quality of the soap obtained was comparable to those produced commercially.  相似文献

There is growing scientific evidence that consumption of n‐3 very long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n‐3 VLC‐PUFA) helps in brain and eye development, and protects against a range of common degenerative diseases. This has provided the impetus to the scientists to develop new and renewable sources for these important fatty acids so that the food industry is able to produce and market products fortified with n‐3 VLC‐PUFA. The bioactive efficacy and stability of food products containing n‐3 VLC‐PUFA may be determined not only by the amount of n‐3 VLC‐PUFA present but also by the positional distribution of these acids within the triacylglycerol (TAG) molecules (regiopurity). Studies of the effects of positional distribution on the functionality of n‐3 VLC‐PUFA containing oils have been hampered by a general lack of pure TAG regioisomers for experimentation. This paper reviews methods that have been used for the synthesis of TAG regioisomers containing n‐3 VLC‐PUFA, with special reference to those in which one n‐3 VLC‐PUFA occurs in combination with two long‐chain saturated acids.  相似文献

The fatty acid distributions of triacylglycerols (TAG) and major phospholipids (PL) obtained from adzuki beans (Vigna angularis) were investigated. The total lipids extracted from the beans were separated by thin‐layer chromatography (TLC) into eight fractions. The major lipid components were PL (63.5 wt‐%), TAG (21.2 wt‐%), steryl esters (7.5 wt‐%) and hydrocarbons (5.1 wt‐%), while free fatty acids, diacylglycerols (1,3‐DAG and 1,2‐DAG) and monoacylglycerols were also present in minor proportions (0.2–1.1 wt‐%). The major PL components isolated from the beans were phosphatidylcholine (45.3 wt‐%), phosphatidylethanolamine (25.8 wt‐%) and phosphatidylinositol (21.5 wt‐%). Phosphatidylinositol was unique in that it had the highest saturated fatty acid content among the three PL. With a few exceptions, however, the principal characteristics of the fatty acid distribution in the TAG and three PL were evident in the beans: Unsaturated fatty acids were predominantly concentrated in the sn‐2 position while saturated fatty acids primary occupied the sn‐1 or sn‐3 position in the oils of the adzuki beans. In general, these results could be useful to both consumers and producers for the manufacture of traditional adzuki foods in Japan.  相似文献

Triacylglycerol (TAG) standards were separated by analytical high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with laser light-scattering detection (LLSD). A high sensitivity for TAGs was observed with LLSD whereas poor sensitivity was observed with ultraviolet detection. The HPLC-LLSD analytical separation of butterfat TAGs showed that the TAGs were eluted according to increasing carbon number. Preparative HPLC-LLSD was used to characterize butterfat TAGs that contained hypercholesterolemic fatty acids (laurate, myristate, palmitate) with carbon chainlengths of 12 or greater. These TAG fractions accounted for 29.2% of the total butterfat TAGs. Analysis of the positional distribution of fatty acids of selected butterfat TAGs containing hypercholesterolemic fatty acids showed the presence of positional isomers in each of these fractions. These butterfat TAGs also showed the predominant presence of hypercholesterolemic fatty acids at thesn-2 position. The characterization of the positional distribution of hypercholesterolemic fatty acids in butterfat TAGs is the first step for the determination of the metabolic role of the positional distribution in the hypercholesterolemic effects of butter.  相似文献

A near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy calibration was developed for the determination of free fatty acids (FFA) in crude palm oil and its fractions based on the NIR reflectance approach. A range of FFA concentrations was prepared by hydrolyzing oil with 0.15% (w/w) lipase in an incubator at 60°C (200 rpm). Sample preparation was performed in Dutch cup, and the spectra were measured in duplicate for each sample. The optimized calibration models were constructed with multiple linear regression analysis based on C=O overtone regions from 1850–2050 nm. The best wavelength combinations were 1882, 2010, and 2040 nm. Multiple correlation coefficients squared (R 2) were: 0.994 for crude palm oil, 0.961 for refined-bleached-deodorized (RBD) palm olein, and 0.971 for RBD palm oil. Calibrations were validated with an independent set of 8–10 samples. R 2 of validation were 0.997, 0.943, and 0.945, respectively. The developed method was rapid, with a total analysis time of 5 min, and environmentally friendly, and its accuracy was generally good for raw-material quality control.  相似文献

In this study, oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) pulp was used as reinforcing agent in polypropylene composite. EFB pulp was prepared using soda pulping with different concentrations of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. Overall, the tensile and flexural properties specifically the strength and the toughness showed improvement as the NaOH content in the treatment was increased. This was attributed to lower probability for EFB pulp to agglomerate and the production of higher aspect ratio pulp fibers. A rapid direct Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic method using a 100 μ BaF2 transmission cell was developed for the determination of free fatty acid (FFA) in crude palm oil (CPO) and refined-bleached-deodorized (RBD) palm olein, covering an analytical range of 3.0–6.5% and 0.07–0.6% FFA, respectively. The samples were prepared by hydrolyzing oil with enzyme in an incubator. The optimal calibration models were constructed based on partial least squares (PLS) analysis using the FTIR carboxyl region (C=O) from 1722 to 1690 cm−1. The resulting PLS calibrations were linear over the range tested. The standard errors of calibration (SEC) obtained were 0.08% FFA for CPO with correlation coefficient (R 2) of 0.992 and 0.01% FFA for RBD palm olein with R 2 of 0.994. The standard errors of performance (SEP) were 0.04% FFA for CPO with R 2 of 0.998 and 0.006% FFA for RBD palm olein with R 2 of 0.998, respectively. In terms of reproducibility (r) and accuracy (a), both FTIR and chemical methods showed comparable results. Because of its simpler and more rapid analysis, which is less than 2 min per sample, as well as the minimum use of solvents and labor, FTIR has an advantage over the wet chemical method.  相似文献

The fatty acid distribution of triacylglycerols (TAG) and major phospholipids (PL) within soybean seeds (Glycine max L.) was investigated in relation to their tocopherol contents. The lipids extracted from four cultivars were separated by thin‐layer chromatography into seven fractions. Tocopherols were predominantly detected in the axis, followed by cotyledons and seed coat. The major lipid components were TAG and PL, while hydrocarbons, steryl esters, free fatty acids and diacylglycerols (sn‐1,3 and sn‐1,2) were also present in minor proportions. With a few exceptions, the dominant PL components were phosphatidylcholine, followed by phosphatidylethanolamine or phosphatidylinositiol. Significant differences (p <0.05) in fatty acid distribution existed when different soybean cultivars were examined. However, the principal characteristics of the fatty acid distribution in the TAG were evident among four cultivars; unsaturated fatty acids were predominantly concentrated in the sn‐2 position, and saturated fatty acids primarily occupied the sn‐1 or sn‐3 position in the oils of the soybeans.  相似文献

Oil palm empty fruit bunch–polypropylene (EFB–PP) composites were produced by employing 2 types of compounding techniques, that is, an internal mixer and a single-screw extruder. The mechanical and water absorption properties of both types of composites were investigated. Overall, for both types of composites, the incorporation of the EFB into PP matrix has resulted in the improvement in the tensile modulus. However, the tensile strength, elongation at break, and impact strength decreased with increasing filler loading. Poor filler–matrix interaction or compatibility and, also, the size irregularity of the EFB are believed to be responsible for the poor ultimate performance. Composites produced by an internal mixer (IM) have displayed higher tensile strength, tensile modulus, and impact strength than with those produced by extrusion (EX). The better performance has been attributed to the effectiveness of the IM, which produces better compounding and improves the wetting of the filler surface. Incorporation of compatibilizer and coupling agent, that is, Epolene wax (E-43) and 3-Aminopropyl triethoxysilane (3-APE), respectively, have produced composites with improved tensile strength for both EX and IM composites. In addition, both types of treatment have resulted in an increase in tensile modulus of EX composites and impact strength of IM composites. Water absorption tests have revealed that the presence of coupling agents and compatibilizers have affected the amount of water absorbed, especially for the 3-APE-treated EFB–PP composites. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Palm stearin (POs) with an iodine value of 41.4, sunflower oil (SFO) and palm kernel olein (PKOo) were blended in various ratios according to a three‐component mixture design and subjected to chemical interesterification (CIE). Triacylglycerol (TAG) and solid fat content (SFC) profiles of the chemically interesterified (CIEed) blends were analyzed and compared with those of the corresponding non‐CIEed blends. Upon CIE, extensive rearrangement of fatty acids (FA) among TAG was evident. The concentrations of several TAG were increased, some decreased and several new TAG might also have been formed. The changes in the TAG profiles were reflected in the SFC profiles of the blends. The SFC of the CIEed blends, except the binary blends of POs/PKOo which experienced an increase in SFC following CIE, revealed that they were softer than their respective starting blends. Randomization of FA distribution within and among TAG molecules of POs and PKOo led to a modification in TAG composition of the POs/PKOo blends and improved miscibility between the two fats, and consequently diminished the eutectic interaction that occurred between POs and PKOo.  相似文献

Storage of oil palm fruits resulted in crude oil that was difficult to bleach, especially from bruised fruits. Fruits stored in the shade were less affected than those exposed to sun and rain. Surprisingly, oil from fruits stored at 5°C was highly hydrolyzed and difficult to bleach.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of isocyanate/hydroxyl ratio and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) content on the properties of polyurethane foam. Polyurethane (PU) foam was prepared from polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate and polyethylene glycol with molecular weight of 200, reinforced with oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) using one shot process. The effect of EFB content on the properties of PU foam was also studied. It was noticed that EFB enhanced the properties of the PU foam. This was due to EFB acting as hard segment in PU foam system. The NCO/OH ratio played an important role in determining the properties of the PU foam produced. However, since EFB is a highly flammable material, APP was introduced to the PU foam system. The color of refined palm oil and palm oil products is conventionally measured using the manually operated Lovibond® Tintometer. In the present study, one manual/visual and three automatic colorimeters for the measurement of vegetable oil color were used for color measurements of refined palm oil. All colorimeters used were commercially available instruments except for an automatic palm oil colorimeter developed specifically for the measurement of palm oil color. The color values obtained from all four instruments were compared using the visually obtained readings as reference values. Results showed that all three automatic instruments gave correlation coefficients of greater than 0.9300 for red color measurements. In addition, the Student t-test showed no difference between the analysis of red color using the visual method and the palm oil colorimeter. This investigation concludes that, although it is extremely difficult to reduce the lack of precision in color measurement of palm oil, a properly designed and calibrated automatic instrument may still be the better choice because reproducibility and repeatability are required in all standard test methods. The palm oil colorimeter offers a ready and relatively inexpensive solution to the problem of color matches based on visual observations.  相似文献

Oil palm empty fruit bunch–polypropylene (EFB‐PP) composites have been produced using a twin‐screw extruder as the compounding equipment. Two levels of EFB were employed, 40 % and 60 % of the total weight of the sample. Three types of coupling agent, maleic anhydride‐modified polypropylene (commercial name Epolene E‐43), polymethylene(polyphenyl isocyanate) (PMPPIC) and 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)‐propylmethacrylate (TPM), were used. Overall, all coupling agents imparted considerable improvements in the flexural properties, E‐43 showing the highest enhancement. However, only E‐43 was observed to improve impact strength and tensile properties of the composites. All composites with coupling agents showed lower water absorption and thickness swelling. The absorption and swelling decreased as the loading of the coupling agents was increased. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Soaps made from blends of distilled palm stearin (PS) and palm (PK) kernel fatty acids were evaluated for total fatty matter, sodium chloride content, moisture content, hardness, Hunter whiteness, foamability, iodine value, titer value, and acid value. Data showed that these soaps had properties similar to palm-based soaps made from distilled palm oil and palm kernel fatty acids. The soaps showed good whiteness (greater than 80%) and foamability. Total fatty matter ranged from 10–18%, sodium chloride content was 0.5%, and free caustic was 0.1% except for blend 8 containing 10 PS:90 PK, which had a free caustic of 0.03%. Initial penetration value, a reflection of soap hardness, ranged from 32–126 mm, with an average value of 54 mm. This value is within the range of the best blends of palm-based soaps (50–63 mm). There was no obvious trend observed. Penetration value, however was found to stabilize after a month of storage with an average value of 19.4 mm. Soap with this hardness value is relatively hard and therefore should be blended with a small amount of soft oils.  相似文献

In this study, a new method was developed for the determination of cypermethrin residue in both crude palm oil (CPO) and crude palm kernel oil (CPKO) using GC with electron capture detector. In this method, the oil was extracted with acetonitrile. Aliquots were cleaned‐up using combined solid phase extraction (SPE), and a primary‐secondary amine in combination with graphitized carbon black. The SPE cartridges were first conditioned and then eluted with acetonitrile. Cypermethrin recoveries from the fortified CPO samples were 87–98% with relative standard deviation (RSD) values of 4–8%, while those for the fortified CPKO samples were 83–100% with RSD values of 3–10%. Since good recoveries were obtained with RSD values below 10% in most cases, the proposed methodology will be useful for the analyses of palm oil samples. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of cypermethrin in real palm oil samples from various parts of Malaysia. No cypermethrin residue was found among 30 samples analyzed.  相似文献

Double-fractionated palm olein (DfPOo) fractions with iodine values (IV) of 60 and 65 were each blended with low-erucic acid rapeseed (LEAR) oil in various proportions. Clarities of the blends at different temperatures were determined. Maximum levels of DfPOo-IV60 and DfPOo-IV65 in blends that remained clear at 20°C for at least 120 d were 40 and 80%, respectively. At 15°C, the maximum levels were 10 and 40%, and at 10°C, 10 and 20%, respectively. At 5°C, only a blend of 10% DfPOo-IV65 in LEAR remained clear for 120 d. Maximum levels of DfPOo-IV60 and DfPOo-IV65 in blends that passed the cold test were 30% for both palm oleins. Maximum levels of the palm oleins in blends with LEAR were higher than those of blends with soybean oil. Cloud points were lower in palm olein/LEAR blends than those of palm olein/soybean oil blends, probably because LEAR contains less saturated fatty acids than soybean oil.  相似文献

The present study was designed to investigate the metabolism of the n−3 olyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in adipose tissue and its dependence upon dietary factors. Changes in the positional distribution of the fatty acids in triacylglycerols from retroperitoneal adipose tissue were studied as a function of time on rats fed for 4 wk a diet enriched with fish oil. The stereospecific analysis of triacylglycerols was based on random formation ofrac-1,2-diacylglycerols by Grignard degradation. This was followed by synthesis ofrac-phosphatidic acids and treatment with phospholipase A2. In the triacylglycerols of the fish oil diet, 57% of the total n−3 fatty acids were in position 3,i.e., two-thirds of 22∶5n−3 and 22∶5n−3 were esterified insn-3 position, whereas 22∶6n−3 was equally distributed in positions 2 and 3. After 4 wk of feeding fish oil, the fatty acid composition of adipose tissue triacylglycerols reached a steady state. Half of the n−3 fatty acids were found in position 3, namely 75% of 22∶5n−3, 50% of 20∶5n−3 and 18∶4n−3 and 45% of 22∶6n−3, the latter being equally distributed in positions 2 and 3. This pattern of distribution resembled that found in triacylglycerols of the fish oil diet, except for a higher proportion of 20∶5n−3 in adipose tissue in position 1 at the expense of position 3. Throughout the 4-wk period of fish oil feeding, the distribution pattern of minor n−3 fatty acids (18∶4n−3 and 22∶5n−3) in adipose tissue triacylglycerols remained unchanged. On the other hand, at the onset of fish oil feeding, 20∶5n−3 and 22∶6n−3 became concentrated in position 3, but thereafter 20∶5n−3 was progressively incorporated into position 1 and 22∶6n−3 into position 2. We thus conclude that n−3 fatty acids are differentially esterified in triacylglycerols of white adipose tissue. Despite the complex sequence of hydrolysis and acylation steps involved, the positional distribution of n−3 fatty acids was found to be similar in both the fish oil diet and the stored fat, in contrast to what was observed for nonessential fatty acids.  相似文献

Improvement of oxidative stability of soybean oil by blending with a more stable oil was investigated. Autoxidation of blends and interesterified blends (9∶1, 8∶2, 7∶3 and 1∶1, w/w) of soybean oil and palm olein was studied with respect to fatty acid composition, fatty acid location and triacylglycerol composition. Rates of formation of triacylglycerol hydroproxides, peroxide value and volatiles were evaluated. The fatty acid composition of soybean oil was changed by blending. Linolenic and linoleic acids decreased and oleic acid increased. The triacylglycerol composition of blends and interesterified blends was different from that of soybean oil. Relative to soybean oil, LnLL, LLL, LLO, LLP, LOO and LLS triacylglycerols were lowered and POO, POP and PLP were higher in blends and interesterified blends (where Ln, L, O, P and S represent linolenic, linoleic, oleic, palmitic and stearic acids, respectively). Interesterification of the blends leads to a decrease in POO and POP and an increase in LOP. Linoleic acid concentration at triacylglycerol carbon-2 was decreased by blending and interesterification. Rates of change for peroxide value and oxidation product formation confirmed the improvement of soybean oil stability by blending and interesterification. But, blends were more stable than interesterified blends. Also, the formation of hexanal, the major volatile of linoleate hydroperoxides of soybean oil, was decreased by blending and interesterification.  相似文献
