A new cellulose‐based superabsorbent polymer, carboxymethyl cellulose‐graft‐poly(acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide), was prepared by the free‐radical grafting solution polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) monomers onto carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in the presence of N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker with a redox couple of potassium persulfate and sodium metabisulfite as an initiator. The influences of reaction variables such as the initiator content, crosslinker content, bath temperature, molar ratio of AA to AM, and weight ratio of the monomers to CMC on the water absorbency of the carboxymethylcellulose‐graft‐poly(acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide) copolymer were investigated. The copolymer's structures were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The optimum reaction conditions were obtained as follows: the bath temperature was 50°C; the molar ratio of AA to AM was 3 : 1; the mass ratio of the monomers to CMC was 4 : 1; and the weight percentages of the crosslinker and initiator with respect to the monomers were 0.75 and 1%, respectively. The maximum water absorbency of the optimized product was 920 g/g for distilled water and 85 g/g for a 0.9 wt % aqueous NaCl solution. In addition, the superabsorbent possessed good water retention and salt resistance. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 103: 1382–1388, 2007  相似文献

A novel superabsorbent composite, poly(acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide)/potassium humate (PAA‐AM/KHA), was prepared by aqueous solution polymerization from acrylic acid, acrylamide, and potassium humate (KHA) with N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker and potassium peroxydisulfate as an initiator. The effects of incorporated KHA on the water absorbency, swelling rate, and reswelling capability were investigated. The swelling property of PAA‐AM/KHA in various saline solutions was studied systematically. The results show that the comprehensive properties and especially salt‐resistant ability of PAA‐AM/KHA were enhanced. There was a linear relationship between the saturated water absorbency and the minus square root of the ionic strength of the external medium, and the water absorbency of PAA‐AM/KHA in various salt solutions had the following order: NH4Cl(aq) = KCl(aq) = NaCl(aq) > MgCl2(aq) > CaCl2(aq) > AlCl3(aq) > FeCl3(aq). Moreover, the polymeric net structure of PAA‐AM/KHA was examined with respect to that of poly(acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide). The results indicate that the polymeric net of PAA‐AM/KHA was improved by the introduction of a moderate amount of KHA into the superabsorbent composite and made more suitable for agriculture and horticulture applications. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel poly(acrylate‐co‐acrylamide)/expanded vermiculite (EVMT) superabsorbent composite was synthesized by aqueous solution polymerization method. The water absorbency of the superabsorbent composite still reaches 850 g/g when 50 wt % EVMT is added, which is significant in decreasing the production cost of the superabsorbent composites. By controlling the molar ratio of acrylic acid monomer and acrylamide monomer, and neutralization degree of acrylic acid, the hydrophilic groups on the composite can be adjusted, and it is found that the collaborative absorbent effect of ? CONH2, ? COOK, and ? COOH groups is superior to that of single ? CONH2, ? COOK, or ? COOH group. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 104: 735–739, 2007  相似文献

Design and synthesis of the agricultural and ecological superabsorbent materials with cost‐efficient and fertilizer‐release characteristics has recently attracted considerable interests. In this work, the novel poly(sodium‐potassium acrylate‐co‐acrylamide)/plant ash (PNa‐KA‐co‐AM/PA) superabsorbent composites with potassium‐release characteristics were prepared using partially neutralized acrylic acid (Na‐KA), acrylamide (AM), and plant ash (PA) as raw materials, ammonium persulfate (APS) as the initiator, and N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as the crosslinker. The structure, morphologies, and thermal stability of the composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy, and TGA techniques, respectively. The effects of MBA concentration and PA content on water absorbency were studied, and the swelling properties of the composites in saline solutions and various pHs solution as well as their potassium‐release capabilities were also evaluated. Results indicate that the composites exhibit better thermal stability, salt‐resistant performance, pH‐stability, and potassium‐release properties, and can act as a fertilizer and an effective water‐saving material for agricultural and ecological application. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Triple polymer coated with controlled‐release water retention fertilizer (TCWF) and enhanced mechanical property was developed by coating polyethylene (first layer), poly (acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide) superabsorbent (second layer), and poly (butyl methacrylate) (third layer) consecutively on the granule core urea in the fluidized‐bed coater. The inner layer possessed controlled‐release property, the middle layer had water absorbent characteristic, and the thin outer layer aimed to protect the fragile layer of the superabsorbent. The relationship between the thickness of coating layer and the nutrient releasing properties was established. The effects of polymerization parameters on the water absorbency of the superabsorbent were studied and optimized as well. The nutrients release behaviors of this triple‐coated urea in both water and soil were investigated and compared. The results showed that TCWF not only performed as a good controlled‐release fertilizer but also had excellent water retention capacity. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, a series of poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid‐co‐2‐hydroxy ethyl actylate) [AM‐co‐AA‐co‐HEA] hydrogels have been synthesized by varying the acrylic acid (AA)content over eightfold in feed in the range of 33.34–93.76% by keeping other monomer constant. These hydrogels were characterized by FTIR, SEM analysis, elemental analysis, residual acrylic acid analysis, network parameters, and dynamic swelling behavior. The swelling study showed that equilibrium swelling ratio was nonlinearly increased with increasing AA content. Interestingly, the equilibrium swelling ratio decreased from 53.42 to 48.52 for 75–80% AA content hydrogel. The swelling data were found to satisfactorily fit Fick's second law, demonstrating that diffusion rate of water uptake was primarily Fickian. From model fitting, it was observed that early model was applicable for first 30% water absorption, and late model was applicable for latter 70% water absorption for increasing AA content from 33.34–90.90%. For 93.76% AA, early‐time model was extended up to first 50% of water absorption and late model was contracted for latter 50% water absorption, indicating that excessive AA content affects the applicability range of early‐time and late‐time diffusion models for water absorption. Etters model was best applicable to all type of hydrogels and followed over all swelling range. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

Superabsorbent polymer composites (SAPCs) are very promising and versatile materials for biomedical applications. This study concentrates on the development of novel cellulose‐based SAPC, Poly(acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide‐co?2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid)‐grafted nanocellulose/poly(vinyl alcohol) composite, P(AA‐co‐AAm‐co‐AMPS)‐g‐NC/PVA, as a potential drug delivery vehicle. Amoxicillin was selected as a model drug, which is used for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori induced peptic and duodenal ulcers. P(AA‐co‐AAm‐co‐AMPS)‐g‐NC/PVA was synthesized by graft copolymerization reaction, and FTIR, XRD, SEM, and DLS analyses were performed for its characterization. Equilibrium swelling studies were conducted to evaluate the stimuli‐response behavior of the SAPC and found that equilibrium swelling was dependent on pH, contact time, temperature, ionic strength, concentration of crosslinker and PVA. Maximum drug encapsulation efficiency was found out by using different concentrations of amoxicillin. Drug release studies were carried out at simulated gastric and intestinal fluids and the release % was observed as maximum in intestinal fluids within 4 h. The drug release kinetics was investigated using Peppas' potential equation and follows non‐Fickian mechanism at pH 7.4. Thus, the drug release experiments indicate that P(AA‐co‐AAm‐co‐AMPS)‐g‐NC/PVA would be a fascinating vehicle for the in vitro administration of amoxicillin into the gastrointestinal tract. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel poly(acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide)/halloysite nanotubes [PAA‐AM/HNTs] superabsorbent composite was synthesized by free radical polymerization with using HNTs as an inorganic additive. The composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results revealed that HNTs and PAA‐AM were combined well together to form a porous structure with a pore size of about 10 μm, and HNTs were uniformly distributed in the composite. The thermal stability was improved by adding HNTs in the composite. The influences of contents of initiator and halloysite, neutralization degree of AA, and molar ratio of AM to AA on water absorbency were investigated. The water absorbency and the water retention capacity were improved after adding HNTs into PAA‐AM. The composite containing 10% HNTs had the highest water absorbency of 1276 g/g in distilled water. Moreover, PAA‐AM/HNTs composite also had a high swelling rate within 60 min and could maintain 78% initial swelling capability after five reswelled test. The substantial enhancement of swelling properties enables PAA‐AM/HNTs suitable for numerous practical applications. POLYM. COMPOS., 36:229–236, 2015. © 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

In this work, a novel poly(acrylic acid‐coN‐acryloylmorpholine)/attapulgite superabsorbent composite was prepared by graft copolymerization among acrylic acid, N‐acryloylmorpholine and attapulgite in aqueous solution, using N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker and ammonium persulfate as an initiator. The result from FTIR spectra showed that  OH of attapulgite participated in graft copolymerization with acrylic acid and N‐acryloylmorpholine. Proper monomer ratio and atapulgite content could form a loose surface, and improve reswelling ability and initial swelling rate. The buffer action of the  COOH and  COO groups in the superabsorbent composite keeps the water absorbency a rough constant in the pH range of 4.4–9.6. Both polarity and structure of an organic solvent are responsible for the phase transition point of the superabsorbent composite. POLYM. COMPOS., 2010. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

A series of copolymeric superabsorbent materials comprising polyacrylamide (PAM), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) reinforced with variable wt% of modified clay were prepared. The copolymer/clay composite was characterized by Fourier transformed infrared, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The water absorbencies of poly(acrylamide‐co‐vinyl alcohol)/clay composites were measured by calculating their percentage swelling ratio. The effects of copolymerization, type of clay, and clay content on the water absorbencies were studied. The swelling was measured in acidic, alkaline, and saline condition to ensure its versatility. The results indicated a remarkable increase in swelling ratio by incorporation of modified clay having higher hydrophilicity and optimum clay loading. The poly(acrylamide‐co‐vinyl alcohol)/clay composite hydrogel was found to have better re‐swelling ability and water retention capacity compared to the virgin copolymer. The substantial enhancement of swelling properties enables the superabsorbent poly(acrylamide‐co‐vinyl alcohol)/clay suitable for agricultural and horticultural application. POLYM. A series of amphoteric, superabsorbent polymers [poly(acrylic acid‐co‐diallyldimethylammonium chloride)] with different molar ratios of anionic groups to cationic groups were prepared by solution polymerization to investigate their swelling behaviors and the controlled release of agrochemicals. Various factors, including the solution pH, the concentrations of different salt solutions, and the temperature, were studied. The dynamic parameters of hydrogels at different temperatures suggested that diffusion was Fickian at lower temperatures, whereas non‐Fickian diffusion prevailed at higher temperatures. A copolymer hydrogel with a low anionic‐group/cationic‐group ratio showed a higher swelling capacity in water and higher salt tolerance. Also, the anionic‐group/cationic‐group ratio was not the dominant factor in determining the water retention. A poly(acrylic acid‐co‐diallyldimethylammonium chloride) hydrogel could control the release of agrochemicals effectively. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 102: 986–991, 2006  相似文献

Semi‐interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels with different compositions of chitosan (Cs), acrylic acid, and citraconic acid were synthesized via free‐radical polymerization with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a crosslinker. The variations of the swelling percentages of the hydrogels with time, temperature, and pH were determined, and Cs–poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogels were found to be most swollen at pH 7.4 and 37°C. Scanning electron micrographs of Cs–PAA and Cs–P(AA‐co‐CA)‐1 (Cs‐poly(acrylicacid‐co‐citraconir acid)?1) were taken to observe the morphological differences in the hydrogels. Although the less swollen hydrogel, Cs–P(AA‐co‐CA)‐1, had a sponge‐type structure, the most swollen hydrogel, Cs–PAA, displayed a uniform porous appearance. Fluconazole was entrapped in Cs–P(AA‐co‐CA)‐1 and Cs–PAA hydrogels, and the release was investigated at pH 4.0 and 37°C. The kinetic release parameters of the hydrogels (the gel characteristic constant and the swelling exponent) were calculated, and non‐Fickian diffusion was established for Cs–PAA, which released fluconazole much more slowly than the Cs–P(AA‐co‐CA)‐1 hydrogel. A therapeutic range was reached at close to 1 h for both hydrogels. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Environmentally sensitive hydrogels responsive to various stimuli such as temperature, pH, ionic strength of the medium and the solvent were prepared by using N‐isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM), acrylamide (AAm) and monomers that have various number of carboxylic acid (XA) functionality using N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide (Bis) as crosslinker. Hydrogels were prepared via free radical polymerization reaction in aqueous solution. P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm) and p(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm)/XA hydrogels that contain monoprotic crotonic acid (CA) exhibit a lover critical solution temperature (LCST) at 28°C, whereas p(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm)/IA (IA:itaconic acid), and P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm)/ACA (ACA:acotonic acid) hydrogels exhibit a lover critical solution temperature at 30.7°C and 34.4°C, respectively. Spectroscopic and thermal analyses were performed for the structural and thermal characterizations of the prepared hydrogel. The swelling experiments as equilibrium swelling percentages by gravimetrically were carried out in different solvents, at different solutions temperature, pH, and ionic strengths to determine their effects on swelling characteristic of hydrogels. A series of interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels having higher swelling ratio (SR) and thermosensitivity were synthesized from sodium acrylate (SA) and N‐isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAAm) by a two‐step method. A series of the porous poly(sodium acrylate ‐co‐1‐vinyl–2‐pyrrolidone) [poly(SA‐co‐VP)], (SV), hydrogels were prepared from acrylic acid having 90% degree of neutralization and VP monomer in the first step. The second step is to immerse the SV dried gels into the NIPAAm solution containing initiator, accelerator, and crosslinker to absorb NIPAAm solution and then polymerized to form the poly(SA‐co‐VP)/poly(NIPAAm) IPN hydrogels (SVN). The effect of the different molar ratios of SA/VP and the content of NIPAAm on the swelling behavior and physical properties of the SVN hydrogels was investigated. Results showed that the SVN hydrogels displayed an obviously thermoreversible behavior when the temperature turns across the critical gel transition temperature (CGTT) of poly(NIPAAm) hydrogel. The pore diameter distributions inside the hydrogel also indicated that the pore sizes inside the SVN hydrogels were smaller than those inside the SV hydrogels. At the same time, the more proportion of SA was added into the hydrogel, the larger pore diameter of the SV hydrogel was formed. The results also showed that the SR decreased with an increase of the VP content in the SV hydrogel and more obviously decreased in the SVN hydrogels. The SVN networks also showed stronger shear moduli than SV hydrogels. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献

In this work, a series of novel hydroxyethyl cellulose‐ g‐poly(acrylic acid)/attapulgite (HEC‐g‐PAA/APT) superabsorbent composites were prepared through the graft polymerization of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), partially neutralized acrylic acid (AA), and attapulgite (APT) in aqueous solution, and the composites were characterized by means of Fourier‐transform spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electronmicroscopy. The effects of polymerization variables including concentrations of the initiator and crosslinker and APT content on water absorbency were studied, and the swelling properties in various pH solutions as well as the swelling kinetics in various saline solutions were also systematically evaluated. Results showed that the introduction of 5 wt% APT into HEC‐g‐PAA polymeric network could improve both water absorbency and water absorption rate of the superabsorbent composites. In addition, the superabsorbent composites retained high water absorbency over a wide pH range of 4–10, and the swelling kinetics of the superabsorbent composites in CaCl2 and FeCl3 solutions exhibited a remarkable overshooting phenomenon. A novel hydroxyethyl chitosan‐g‐poly(acrylic acid‐co‐Sodium Acrylate) (HECTS‐g‐(PAA‐co‐PSA)) superabsorbent polymer was prepared through graft copolymerization of acrylic acid and sodium acrylate onto the chain of hydroxyethyl chitosan. The structure of the polymer was characterized by FTIR. By studying the water absorption of the polymer synthesized under different conditions, the optimal conditions for synthesizing the polymer with the highest swelling ratio was defined. This superabsorbent polymer was further treated by the solvent precipitation method and by the freeze‐drying method. We found that the water absorption rate of the treated polymer was greatly increased and the microstructure of the treated polymer was changed from small pores to loose macro pores. The swelling processes of the polymers before and after modification fit first‐order dynamic processes. The amount of the residual acrylic acid was greatly decreased after treatments. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

A superabsorbent composed of waste polystyrene, starch, and acrylic acid was prepared through emulsion polymerization. The effects of major factors such as starch, acrylic acid, initiator, crosslinker, and bentonite contents and the neutralization degree of acrylic acid on water absorbency were investigated to obtain optimum conditions with high swelling capacity. The superabsorbent hydrogel was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The FTIR results confirmed that the grafting polymerization took place among the polystyrene, acrylic acid, starch, and bentonite. The introduction of bentonite particles into the polystyrene‐g‐poly (acrylic acid)‐co‐starch system could increase the water absorbency. The superabsorbent composite containing 3 wt % bentonite had the highest water absorbency (500 g/g in distilled water and 49 g/g in 0.9 wt % NaCl solution). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polymeric flocculants of aluminum hydroxide‐poly[acrylamide‐co‐(acrylic acid)], AHAMAA, were prepared by solution polymerization using aluminum hydroxide as a coagulant in the presence of acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA) as a comonomer pair with N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinking agent. The crosslinking was initiated by ammonium persulfate with N,N,N′,N′‐tetramethylethylenediamine as an initiator. The water absorbency of crosslinked poly[AM‐co‐AA] was always higher than that of AHAMAA and was found to be correlated to the storage modulus of the polymers, which was higher for AHAMAA than that of crosslinked poly[AM‐co‐AA]. The residual aluminum concentration of AHAMAA (0.09–0.2 mg L?1) indicated the stability of the polymer flocculant which was in good agreement with the observed tan δ and the higher G′′ and G′ values. Both the crosslinked poly[AM‐co‐AA] and AHAMAA satisfactorily reduced the turbidity of kaolin suspensions, but the latter gave a better reduction performance. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel high‐temperature resistant superabsorbent was prepared by solution polymerization of partially neutralized acrylic acid (AA), using triallylammonium chloride as crosslinker, potassium persulfate as initiator. The factors that influence the water‐absorbing capacity at 25 and 200°C such as mass concentration of monomer, mass ratio of crosslinker to AA, mass ratio of initiator to AA, and neutralization degree were investigated. The structure of the superabsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The optimum conditions were obtained and the swelling ratios in distilled water and 1 wt % of NaCl solution could reach 841 and 74 g/g at 300°C, respectively. The superabsorbent also showed high swelling rate and good salt resistance. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 41243.  相似文献

A 24–1 fractional factorial design was used to evaluate the effect of some parameters, such as the acrylic acid (AA)/chitosan (CTS) molar ratio, crosslinker concentration, initiator concentration, and filler concentration, in the swelling capacity of superabsorbent hydrogel composites based on CTS‐graft‐poly(acrylic acid) and nontronite clay. The data from wide‐angle X‐ray scattering and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the syntheses of the hydrogel composites. Main and interaction effects were analyzed by analysis of variance, F tests, and p values. We found that the AA/CTS and crosslinker were the most influential effects in the evaluated response. The proposed statistical model presented a high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.985). In addition to the swelling kinetics, the effects of pH and salt for the both compositions (with and without filler), which presented the best water uptake, were evaluated. Both hydrogels showed responsive behavior in relation to the pH and the salt solution, presenting good potential for application as devices in the controlled release of solutes. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
