This paper examines the existing environmental management communications practice among project participants in project development processes. There is a growing pressure for all project participants to extend their traditional business objectives of only lowering cost and shortening project duration to improve environmental performance. In achieving better environmental performance, it is essential to collect responses from project participants including project clients, consultants, contractors and various sub-contractors to build up collaboration. As this collaboration is based largely on communications among various parties, the validity and effectiveness of the communications are essential to enable effective collaboration. By investigating practical applications, this paper identifies gaps of communications among project participants, and shows that these gaps present barriers to the improvement of environmental performance in construction. Possible solutions to communication gaps are investigated, leading to the proposal of a communication-mapping model for environmental management (CMEM). The CMEM is proposed as a method aimed at effectively implementing environmental management in construction practice. Data used for this study are collected from six construction projects in Hong Kong. A free-flow mapping approach is also employed to assist the investigations. It is believed that this study can help improving communications among project participants and environmental performance in the construction industry.  相似文献

Public procurement tenders (PPTs) represent one of the largest sources of income for construction companies; the identification of factors that could favour the winning of these projects becomes more and more interesting. Our work aims to explore how firm-specific capabilities (project management, project administration and innovation) and the geography of its business network shape the success of contractors in winning PPTs, measured as the average value of projects won by the firms. We propose an empirical study of contractors involved in public procurement projects in the construction industry in three Italian regions from 2008 to 2012 employing a fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis. This methodology allows analysing how different combinations of causal conditions contribute to an outcome. Our research highlights that there are three successful strategies for firms attempting to obtain high-value PPT projects: (1) invest in high-level project management capabilities, engage in business networks with distant clients and intensify innovation capacity; (2) invest in high-level project administration capabilities, engage in business networks with local clients and suppliers (within 100 km), report a large number of certifications and show a high innovation capacity; and (3) invest in growth strategies to increase the size of the company.  相似文献

Membranes with antibacterial properties were developed using surface modification of polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes. Three different modification strategies using polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer (LbL) technique are described. The first strategy relying on the intrinsic antibacterial properties of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) exhibits only little antibacterial effects. The other two strategies contain silver in both ionic (Ag+) and metallic (Ag0) form. Ag+ embedded into negatively charged poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) layers totally inhibits bacterial growth. Ag0 nanoparticles were introduced to the membrane surface by LbL deposition of chitosan- and poly(methacrylic acid) - sodium salt (PMA)-capped silver nanoparticles and subsequent UV or heat treatment. Antibacterial properties of the modified membranes were quantified by a new method based on the Respiration Activity Monitoring System (RAMOS), whereby the oxygen transfer rates (OTR) of E. coli K12 cultures on the membranes were monitored online. As opposed to colony forming counting method RAMOS yields more quantitative and reliable data on the antibacterial effect of membrane modification. Ag-imprinted polyelectrolyte film composed of chitosan (Ag0)/PMA(Ag0)/chitosan(Ag0) was found to be the most promising among the tested membranes. Further investigation revealed that the concentration and equal distribution of silver in the membrane surface plays an important role in bacterial growth inhibition.  相似文献

Abstract

With growing complex infrastructure, autonomous condition assessment of large-scale structures has garnered significant attention over the past few decades. Data-driven structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques offer valuable information of existing health of the structures, maintain the safety and their uninterrupted use under varied operational conditions by undertaking timely risk and hazard mitigation. Traditional approaches, however, are not enough to monitor a large amount of SHM data and conduct systematic decision making for future maintenance. In this article, building information modeling (BIM) is utilised as a promising computing environment and integrated digital representation platform of SHM that can organize and visualise a considerable amount of sensor data and subsequent structural health information over a prolonged period. A BIM-enabled platform is utilised to develop the proposed visualisation tool for a long-span bridge and enable automated sensor data inventory into the BIM environment. Such automated tool facilitates systematic maintenance and risk management, while avoiding manual errors resulting from visual inspection of the structures. The proposed method can be considered as a user-friendly and economic framework for condition assessment and disaster mitigation of structures from long-term monitored data.  相似文献

A 183 m reinforced concrete chimney for a coal-fired power station was instrumented in the latter part of its life during the construction of a replacement chimney. Because of concerns about large-amplitude response induced by interference effects from the new chimney in the prevailing upwind direction, a response monitoring system was installed, quickly followed by a tuned mass damper (TMD) system. As well as providing live display of the chimney response, the monitoring system was also used to check the functioning of the TMD. The monitoring system featured a direct implementation of the stochastic subspace identification procedure in the ‘virtual instrument’ controlling the system, so that modal damping values for the system were displayed automatically, in real-time. The system thus provided an immediate visual indication of increased damping levels during strong winds, showing the correct functioning of the TMD. The paper describes the chimney, the monitoring system and its installation, the data processing and system identification procedure, together with performance data before, during and after installation of the TMD.  相似文献

Recent advances in sensing technologies make it feasible and practic al to install sensors on expensive civil infrastructures, such as bridges, for safety monitoring during construction and long-term assessment of the structures condition. This paper presents a case study of a structural health monitoring (SHM) and bridge management system (BMS) installed in Yeongjong Bridge in South Korea. This is a self-anchored suspension bridge on the expressway that links Seoul to Incheon International Airport. Experimental data have been collected from the bridge for two years, since its completion in 2000. This paper presents a list of examples where the structural health monitoring system can be applied and provides general guidelines and recommendations for deploying a monitoring system in terms of (1) sensing and instrumentation, (2) data collection and signal processing, and (3) information processing.  相似文献

Abstract

This study presents the general features of the structural health monitoring (SHM) system of the long-span cable-supported bridges in Turkey, namely the First Bosphorus Bridge, the Second Bosphorus Bridge (Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge), the newly constructed the Third Bosphorus Bridge (Yavuz Sultan Selim) and the Osman Gazi Bridge (Izmit Bay Bridge). Due to the critical function of the bridges in the transportation networks of Istanbul, structural health under extreme and operational load cases without interruption of their operation is essential. The SHM systems are already available and in use for the First and Second Bosphorus Bridges; however, the Yavuz Sultan Selim and the Osman Gazi Bridges, only have the preliminary SHM systems established. General preferences of the current and planned SHM systems of the bridges are given based on the monitoring objectives and requirements. Data collected from the SHM systems are also exhibited as an illustration for structural modal identification of the First Bosphorus Bridge. Based on the experiences from the current SHM systems, future works and planning are recommended to effectively design new SHM system and to efficiently update the current ones.  相似文献
