ABSTRACT

A series of experiments on the convective drying of Pinus radiata has been undertaken at the CSIRO Division of Forest Products in Australia. This paper uses the experimental results to compare predictions from both a comprehensive mathematical model, which includes wood temperature, moisture content and pressure distributions, and a simplified model (two versions) which assumes constant total pressure. From the- simulations, it is seen that both models adequately predict the overall kinetics of the wood drying process. For a complete understanding of the heat and mass transfer phenomena that occur in wood during drying the comprehensive model is necessary. However, it is computationally long and expensive, and as such, does not suit the practical drying needs of the timber industry in Australia. Consequently, the simplified model, which has acceptable computation time and sufficient accuracy for engineering purposes, enables die wood drying process to be optimised from both performance and economic perspectives.  相似文献

Abstract

This work investigates the effect of spray drying conditions on some properties of tomato powder prepared by spray drying of tomato pulp. A pilot scale spray dryer (Buchi, B-191) with cocurrent regime and a two-fluid nozzle atomizer was employed. Sixty-four different experiments were conducted keeping constant the feed rate, the feed temperature, and the atomizer pressure, and varying the compressed air flow rate, the flow rate of drying air, and the air inlet temperature. Tomato powders were analyzed for moisture, solubility, density (bulk and packed), and hygroscopicity. Analysis of experimental data yielded correlations between powder properties and the above-mentioned variable operating conditions. Regression analysis was used to fit a full second order polynomial, reduced second order polynomials and linear models to the data of each of the properties evaluated. F values for all reduced and linear models with an R 2 ≥ 0.70 were calculated to determine if the models could be used in place of full second order polynomials.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Grain drying is a simultaneous heat and moisture transfer problem. The modelling of such a problem is of significance in understanding and controlling the drying process. In the present study, a mathematical model for coupled heat and moisture transfer problem is presented. The model consists of four partial differential equations for mass balance, heat balance, heat transfer and drying rate. A simple finite difference method is used to solve the equations. The method shows good flexibility in choosing time and space steps which enable the simulation of long term grain drying/cooling processes. A deep barley bed is used as an example of grain beds in the current simulation. The results are verified against experimental data taken from literature. The analysis of the effects of operating conditions on the temperature and moisture content within the bed is also carried out  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A transient one dimensional first principles model is developed for the drying of a porous material (wood is used as an example) that includes both heat and mass transfer. Heat transfer by conduction and convection, mass transfer by binary gas diffusion, pressure-driven bulk flow in the gas and liquid, and diffusion of bound water are included in the analysis. The diffusive mass transfer terms are modeled using a Fickian approach, while the bulk flow is modeled assuming Darcian flow. Depending on the state (pendular or funicular) of the moisture in the wood, appropriate terms are considered in the development of the governing mass equations. The results provide distributions within the material of each moisture phase (vapor, liquid, and bound), temperature, and total pressure. Information regarding the drying rate and evaporation rate is also presented. Average distributions are obtained as a function of time, and compared with experimental data from the literature. It is observed that the total pressure within the material can be considerably above one atmosphere during the drying process.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A thermomechanical model of drying of capillary-porous materials whose material constants depend on moisture content and temperature is presented in the paper. The finite element method is used for the solution of two-dimensional problem of convective drying of a prismatic bar. The moisture distributions, temperature distributions, drying induced strains and stresses for various drying medium parameters are determined. The effect of these parameters on moisture distribution and in particular on drying induced stresses is discussed.  相似文献

A control volume formulation for the solution of a set of two-way coupled heat and diffusive moisture transfer equations with an infrared source term is presented in three dimensions. The solution procedure developed uses a fully implicit time stepping scheme for the solution of the coupled set of equations and is applied to study the infrared drying of potato using two different drying systems. The maximum deviation between experimental and simulation results were 9.0°C in temperature for potato drying, and 10% (d.b.) for moisture predictions. The overall predictions agreed well with the available experimental data from the two systems and show a good potential for application in infrared drying of food grains and biomaterials.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A transient one dimensional first principles model is developed for the drying of a porous material (paper) that includes both heat and mass transfer. All three modes of heat transfer are considered; conduction, convection and radiation. The conduction is assumed to be in one dimension, through the porous material. The convection is assumed to exist only at the surface as a boundary condition. The radiation is assumed to be a volumetric phenomenon, so that the material internally absorbs, emits, and scatters energy. The absorption and scattering coefficients are spectrally dependent. Furthermore, the material is considered to have a non-unity refractive index with diffuse surfaces. In the mass transfer it is assumed that water exists in three phases: bound, free and vapor. The results provide profiles within the material for each moisture phase, temperature, and pressure and the effect of radiation on these distributions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Since the only measured value that is derived from the wood for controlling the kiln drying process is the mean moisture content, it is essential to develop new techniques for the measurement of additional process parameters. When the drying rate, which could be such an additional parameter, is seen in conjunction with other process variables, conclusions on the instantaneous drying behaviour of the wood are possible. A simple and practical way for determining the drying rate is based on the relationship between the drying rate and the heat-flux for evaporation. A measurement of the heat-flux by means of a heat-flux sensor allows the calculation of the drying rate.  相似文献

Three models of different complexity are proposed to describe the falling rate period of the carrot drying process with shrinkage. A moving or fixed boundary problem as well as a constant or local moisture and temperature dependent effective diffusivity are considered. The moving boundary problem is solved by an explicit finite difference method. Heat transfer coefficient and effective diffusivity identification were carried out. The results of the heat transfer coefficient show a good agreement with other sources. Using experimental data and the models. describing the heat and mass transfer three different expressions for the effective diffusivity are established. Two of them are only temperature dependent considering or not particle shrinkage. The third one takes into account temperature and local moisture as well as shrinkage.

Drying of foods is a complicated process involving simultaneous coupled heat and mass transfer phenomena which occur inside the material being dried (Chiang and Petersen, 1987). Several models are found in the literature, representing mass and energy transfer which take place during food drying (King, 1968; Sokhansanj and Gustafson, 1980). Usually, approximate solutions are obtained with these  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Non-linear partial differential equations are presented for two dimensional heat and mass transfer within a single grain kernel during drying. In this model, the moisture evaporation inside the kernel is considered. The moisture is assumed to diffuse to the outer boundary of the kernel in liquid form and evaporate on the surface of the kernel. The influence of temperature and moisture content on grain properties is also considered in the simulation. The Non-linear partial differential equations are solved using the finite element method and simulation data is verified on a thin layer dryer for wheat kernels. The comparison shows that the simulated results have a high accuracy with average relative error of about 5%. The results of the finite element analysis can be used for grain quality evaluation, drying simulation studies and stress analysis of grain kernel.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to analyze the simultaneous heat and mass transfer between air and soybean seeds in countercurrent and concurrent moving bed dryers by simulation. The technique chosen was based on modeling from mass and energy conservation equations for the fluid and particulate phases. The equilibrium, heat transfer and mass transfer equations were taken from specific studies. The equation representing drying kinetics was obtained by means of a thin-layer study, whereas the equilibrium equations was chosen from rival model discrimination, based on nonlinearity measures. Hence, the model parameters were defined by the respectives studies. The profiles for temperature and humidity of the fluid and the temperature and moisture of the seeds were obtained by numerical solution of the model. This model consisted of ordinary differential equations and the solution was obtained by a specific code. The simulated results indicated a significant.  相似文献
