ABSTRACT

A mathematical model of a heat pump fruit dryer was developed to study the performance of heat pump dryers. Using the moisture content of papaya glace' drying, the refrigerant temperature at the evaporator and condenser and the performance, was verified. It was found that the simulated results using closed loop heat pump dryer were close to the experimental results. The criteria for evaluating the performance were specific moisture extraction rate and drying rate. The results showed that ambient conditions affected significantly on the performance of the open loop dryer and the partially closed loop dryer. Also, the fraction of evaporator bypass air affected markedly on the performance of all heat pump dryers. In addition, it was found that specific air flow rate and drying air temperature affected significantly the performance of all heat pump dryers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The performance and operating characteristics of a low temperature re-circulating cabinet dryer using a dehumidifier loop were studied using alfalfa. Chopped alfalfa, initially at 70% moisture content, was dried to 10% moisture content in the dryer. Two dryer setups were used. The dryers in each case had a partitioned cabinet with trays of material on one side and a stack of one or two small household dehumidifiers on the other side. Air was re-circulated through the material from bottom to the top and back through the dehumidifiers. Two drying configurations were tested. In one, the material was left on the trays until drying was complete (batch or fixed tray drying). In the other configuration, the trays were moved from top to bottom, introducing a new tray at the top while removing an old tray from bottom. Drying air temperature ranged from 25 to 45°C. The average air velocity through the material was 0.38 m/s. Alfalfa chops dried in 5 h in the fixed tray drying and in 4 h in the moving tray drying. The specific moisture extraction rate ranged from 0.35 to 1.02 kg/kWh for batch drying and stayed at an average value of 0.50 kg/kWh for continuous/moving tray drying.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Solar dryers have been considered for timber drying in a number of countries because of the expected savings in drying costs. From a review of past works on solar, natural, and conventional drying it was observed that while solar dryers were able to dry timber faster compared to natural drying, the difference was only marginal in some instances. The drying rates are expected to be dependent upon ambient conditions in which the dryera are operated. Solar dryers would operate more efficiently in countries with low humidity than in tropical regions. Thus the thermal performance and also the economics of solar dryer is country dependent. In the present paper, a comparison of the drying rates obtained with a solar dryer is made with that obtained with an electrically operated drying kiln.  相似文献

Abstract

A fluidized bed dryer (FBD) and a combined microwave/fluidized bed dryer (CMFD) are used to dry the fresh ripe peppercorns. The average moisture content vs. elapsed drying time, and drying rate vs. average moisture content are experimentally investigated. It is found that the microwave field from the CMFD can increase the potential of the conventional fluidized bed drying. The drying rates of both dryers are dependent on the inlet air temperature and velocity. For the CMFD, the effects of the air velocity on the drying rate are found to be opposite to our previous results tested with white pepper seeds i.e., the drying rates of the fresh ripe peppercorns decreased with increasing air velocity. By using a CMFD, the drying time required to reach the desired moisture content can be reduced to 80–90% of the drying time required for a FBD at the same drying air temperature and velocity. The color of the product dried by a CMFD is also attractive: it becomes flaming yellow, instead of black as obtained from a FBD. The physical structure of the peppercorn, before and after the drying process is also investigated by a metallurgical macroscope and an image analyzer. Different from drying by a FBD, the external form and matter of the white pepper seed are still maintained, even after passing through the drying process.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The drying of grain in dryers of a crossflow moving bed type was theoretically and experimentally studied. Two different dryer configurations were analyzed, a dryer with central air distribution and another with multiple air duels. Experimental information was obtained in pilot-size dryers. A mathematical model to simulate the process was developed. Hindered drying was accounted for by using the concept of relative drying rate. An adjustable factor, specific to the dryers, was used to account for the uncertainties of the contact area and the transfer coefficients encountered in the literature. Agreement between experimental results and simulations was fairly good. Simulations showed that distance between inlet air and outlet devices, air to solid flow ratio and dryer height to cross section ratio have great influence on the process. The mathematical model may be a useful tool for process exploration and optimization of this type of dryers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this work the drying of IAC-Carioca bean was analyzed experimentally in fixed, spouted and spout-fluid beds. A laboratory scale, batch operated apparatus was used. To obtain experimental data, a factorial design technique was used and the influences of the following variables on the process were evaluated: the solids toad, initial grain moisture and drying air temperature. This analysis was done for each dryer by means of drying curves, evolution of grain temperature over time, drying rate and statistical results obtained from factorial design. An energy evaluation was also done and used as a means of comparison between the dryers studied. The three dryers operating under the same conditions showed very similar behavior and the fixed bed dryer showed a performance slightly better. With this work the potential of using spouted bed grain dryerswas confirmed and the possibility of using the spout-fluid bed as a dryer was verified. Two empirical models were proposed and their parameters were correlated with experimental variables. A sensory evaluation was also performed for the purpose of evaluating the effects that the high drying temperatures had on the grain's potential value as food.  相似文献

However, optical microscopy and visual observation showed worse quality of the paper for drying conditions of high air temperature and velocity, presenting less uniformity and overdried surfaces. Abstract

A thin-layer forced air solar dryer was designed to study the feasibility of drying pistachio nuts. The dryer was tested during the 2001 and 2002 drying seasons. The maximum temperature in the solar collector reached 56°C, which was 20°C above the ambient temperature. The required drying time was 36 h. During the first day of drying (0800 to 1700 h) the moisture content dropped to about 21% (wb). The final moisture content of the dried nuts was 6% wb, which was 1% below the recommended storage moisture. The drying constant of the pistachio nuts during solar drying was determined using two mathematical models, a one-term series solution of Fick's diffusion equation and an exponential decaying model. There was no significant difference between the two models (α = 0.05). In general, the quality of solar dried nuts was better than the conventional heated air due to slower drying rates.  相似文献

A batch fluidized bed dryer was carried out for corn drying. Drying characteristics of corn were investigated The experimental results indicated that moisture transfer inside a corn kernel was controlled by internal diffusion by the following conditions : inlet hot air temperatures of 120 - 200 °C, superficial air velocities of 2.2- 4 m/s, bed depths of 4 - 12 cm, fraction of air recycled of 0.5 -0.9 and initial moisture content of corn of 43 % dry-basis. The Wang and Sing equation could describe in accordance with the results. Inlet hot air temperature and specific air flow rate were independent variables for drying constant model in the Wang and Singh equation.  相似文献

This article presents experimental and simulated results of drying of peeled longan in a side-loading solar tunnel dryer. This new type of solar tunnel dryer consists of a flat-plate solar air heater and a drying unit with a provision for loading and unloading from windows at one side of the dryer. These are connected in series and covered with glass plates. A DC fan driven by a 15-W solar cell module supplies hot air in the drying system. To investigate the experimental performance, five full-scale experimental runs were conducted and 100 kg of peeled longan was dried in each experimental run. The drying air temperature varied from 32 to 76°C. The drying time in the solar tunnel dryer was 16 h to dry peeled longan from an initial moisture content of 84% (w.b.) to a final moisture content of 12% (w.b.), whereas it required 16 h of natural sun drying under similar conditions to reach a moisture content of 40% (w.b.). The quality of solar-dried product was also good in comparison to the high-quality product in markets in terms of color, taste, and flavor. A system of partial differential equations describing heat and moisture transfer during drying of peeled longan in this solar tunnel dryer was developed and this system of nonlinear partial differential equations was solved numerically by the finite difference method. The numerical solution was programmed in Compaq Visual FORTRAN version 6.5. The simulated results agreed well with the experimental data for solar drying. This model can be used to provide the design data and it is essential for optimal design of the dryer.  相似文献

Abstract

The deep bed drying modelling of hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) have been studied by considering the deep bed as a series of thin layers. A partial differential equations model has been developed to simulate heat and mass transfer in fixed deep bed hazelnut dryers. The computer program developed permits the calculation of temperature and moisture content profiles along the dryer. As a process of validation of the model, the predicted and experimental results of average moisture content of the whole bed were compared. It has been observed that the simulation results agreed quite well with experimental data.  相似文献

Abstract

The drying rates in moving bed dryers are compared. The gas and the solids to be dried are in parallel flow or counterflow. A new simplified method to simulate the drying in parallel and counterflow moving beds is developed. This model is based on the solution of arbitrary experimental or theoretical drying rate Equations of single solid particles (or thin-layer drying rate equation) coupled with heat and mass conservation Equations of the dryer. The solution is presented in an integral form of the drying equation showing the relation between time or location in the dryer and degree of drying. The method allows rapid calculation of the moisture, vapor mass fraction, and temperature distributions along the dryer in drying with moist air or steam. The model is demonstrated by using a result based on the receding front evaporation model as the specific thin-layer drying equation in the moving bed model. Wood chips are chosen as an example of the substance to be dried, but the method applies also for other medium, if the dependence of the drying rate on moisture and ambient temperature and humidity (thin layer drying rate) is known. The size of the dryer needed to reach the same degree of drying operating in the parallel mode is much greater than that of counterflow type, when the drying medium is air or flue gases. The reason for the poorer drying in parallel flow is mainly the unfavorable distribution of the evaporation temperature. In steam drying, the difference in the size is not so great, since the evaporation takes place approximately at constant temperature.  相似文献

Abstract

An experimental radial-flow, circular bin dryer with a dehumidifier was fabricated and tested for rough rice drying. Results showed that high-moisture paddy could be dried to 14% moisture content (wet basis) over a 24 h drying span at an average drying rate of 0.5%/h. The open-cycle system's specific moisture extraction rate and the dehumidifier's coefficient of performance were within the usual range of values cited for similar conventional systems or equipment. The quality of the dehumidifier-dried and naturally dried paddy was similar with respect to minimum grain Assuring, The system was found to be a technically feasible, more energy-efficient and safer alternative to electrical resistance heating in the conditioning of ambient air for drying under humid tropical conditions.  相似文献

Abstract

The dynamic behavior of conveyor-belt dryers involving externally controlled heat and mass transfer phenomena has been studied via digital simulation. The investigation concerned an industrial dryer used for the moisture removal from wet raisins. The dryer consisted of three drying chambers and a cooling section, all involving the same conveyor belt. For each chamber, perfect temperature control was assumed for the drying air temperature, while its humidity was left uncontrolled. The effect of material temperature and moisture content at the entrance of the dryer and the drying air temperature on material temperature and moisture content at the exit of the dryer and the corresponding drying air humidity, have been explored by step forcing the disturbance and manipulated variables in the non-linear dryer model simulator. Results showed that material moisture content at the exit of the dryer is greatly affected by material moisture content at the entrance as well as by the drying air temperature. Reliable transfer functions for each process module were obtained by fitting several transfer function models on the simulated data using a least-squares approach. It was found that when input material moisture content could be instantly measured, the system responded slowly enough so that excellent control could be achieved for material moisture content at the exit of each chamber. In this case a Pi-feedback cascade temperature controller was used. When a 15 sec delay measuring sensor was introduced, poor performance was observed. A simplified lead-lag feedforward controller, added to the system, in conjunction with the primary Pi-feedback cascade controller, resulted in good control performance of the delay sensor system.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the production of MDF, wet resinated fibre must be dried to its target moisture content, normally 9 to 11%, before compaction into a board by hot pressing. Fibre drying can be interpreted as an incorporated process involving gas-solid two phase-flow, inter-component transfer, and heat and mass transfer within the fibre. Based on these mechanisms, a mathematical model has been developed to simulate the MDF fibre drying process. From the model, fibre moisture content, air temperature and air humidity along the dryer length can be predicted and factors affecting the drying rate examined. The model can be employed to optimise drying conditions and to evaluate improvements in dryer design. A case study of drying improvement in reduction of dryer emissions and heat consumption is given to demonstrate the potential application of the developed dryer model.  相似文献

This paper presents an economic model for analyzing the cost behavior of dehumidifier timber drying process. Various costs, including those of air drying, are identified and quantified. Reasonable assumptions are made to simplify the calculation process. For species of both softwoods and hardwoods, the optimum air drying strategies are investigated based on two scenarios of existing commercial dehumifier dryers and well-run high performance dehumidifier dryers. This paper finds that when the timber maximum air drying degrade rate is less than 5%, air drying adds significant value to the operation of dehumidifier dryers. This benefit accelerates with the extent of air drying. With the use of high performance dehumidifier dryers, the importance of air drying tends to decrease. The cost of air drying is very sensitive to both the assumed interest rate and timber maximum air drying degrade rate.  相似文献
