A model for a pneumatic conveying dryer is presented. Although the main emphasis is put on superheated steam drying of wood chips, it can be used for other porous materials as well

The model includes a comprehensive two-dimensional model for the drying of single wood chips which accounts for the main physical mechanisms occurring in wood during drying. The external drying conditions in a pneumatic conveying dryer were calculated by applying the mass, heat and momentum equations for each incremental step in dryer length. A plug flow assumption was made for the dryer model and the single particle and dryer models were solved in an iterative manner. The non-spherical nature of wood chips were accounted for by measuring the drag and heat transfer coefficients

Model calculations illustrate the complex interactions between steam, particles and walls which occur in a flash dryer. The drying rate varies in a very complex manner through the dryer. The internal resistance to mass transfer becomes very important in The drying of less permeable wood species such as spruce. Two effects were observed as the particle size was increased: firstly the heat transfer rate decreased, and secondly the residence time increased. To some extent, these effects compensate for each other, however, the net result is that larger chips have a higher final moisture content.  相似文献

Abstract

Pneumatic drying is a widely used process in the chemical industries and includes simultaneous conveying and heat and mass transfer between the particles and the heat gas. The increase in the use of this unit operation requires reliable mathematical models to predict processes in the industrial facilities. In the present study a Two-Fluid model has been used for modeling the flow of particulate materials through pneumatic dryer. The model was solved for a two-dimensional steady-state condition and considering axial and radial profiles for the flow variables. A two-stage drying process was implemented. In the first drying stage, heat transfer controls evaporation from the saturated outer surface of the particle to the surrounding gas. At the second stage, the particles were assumed to have a wet core and a dry outer crust; the evaporation process of the liquid from a particle is assumed to be governed by diffusion through the particle crust and by convection into the gas medium. As evaporation proceeds, the wet core shrinks while the particle dries. The numerical procedure includes discretization of calculation domain into torus-shaped final volumes, solving conservation equations by implementation of the SIMPLE (Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equations) algorithm and controls over coupling of phases by IPSA (Interphase Slip Algorithm). The developed model was applied to simulate a drying process of wet PVC particles in a large-scale pneumatic dryer and to a drying process of wet sand in a laboratory-scale pneumatic dryer. The numerical solutions are compared successfully with the results of independent numerical and experimental investigations. Following the model validation, the two-dimensional distributions of the flow characteristics were examined.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Pneumatic drying of chemical products has been frequently used in chemical industries. The increase in the use of this unit operation requires the knowledge of the dynamic of the gas-solid flow in tubes. The mathematical models of vertical pneumatic conveying found in the literature mostly consider the flow steady and one dimensional. However, experimental evidences suggest that radial profiles of the basic variables of the flow exist. In this work a model is proposed for vertical pneumatic conveying considering axial and radial profiles for gas and solids velocities, porosity and pressure. The conservation equations for energy and mass of water were written to extend the model to a pneumatic dryer. The equations of the model were solved using finite difference method and the results show the axial and radial variations of gas and solid temperatures, gas humidity and particle moisture content in the dryer.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A mathematical model for high-temperature drying of softwood lumber with moist air has been modified and extended to simulate wood drying with superheated steam. In the simulation, differences between the two types of drying are considered, these include: external heat and mass transfer processes and calculation of equilibrium moisture content. The external mass transfer coefficient in the perheated steam drying was found to be much higher than that in the moist air drying, however, the heat ransfer coefficients for these two cases were of the same order. The predicted drying curves and wood temperatures from the superheated steam drying model were compared with experimental data and there was close agreement. Further studies will apply the model to development of commercial drying schedules for wood drying with superheated steam.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A theoretical model is presented for particle motion, heat and mass transfer and drying rates in vertical tubular pneumatic conveying dryers. The model is one-dimensional and takes time increments along the tube; a computer program is required for its implementation. It is similar to previous models but incorporates several refinements, notably in wall friction, agglomeration and heat transfer. The predictions are compared with experimental results; agreement is good and clearly superior to that obtained by earlier models. The method may be used either for initial design or for scale-up from pilot plant data.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The work considers the application of the flash drying to the moisture removal of fishmeal using superheated steam as transport medium. Heat, momentum and mass transfer equations were applied and an algorithm based on these equations was developed and solved. The model was validated using experimental data obtained in a pilot pneumatic dryer ( total length 60 m) provided with a steam jacket to maintain the superheated steam at a constant temperature. The drying time was less than 10 s to decrease the fish meals moisture content from 53.5% to 28% d.b. and in a second pass by the dryer the moisture down to 16.9% using superheated steam at It 1 ° C and 130 ° C in the jacket. The computational results are in agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work is to investigate some of the important aspects in the design of a steam band dryer for wood fuels. For this purpose the drying of the material in a bench-scale fixed bed dryer has been studied.

Drying times and thermal efficiencies for experiments conducted under different conditions are compared. The investigated materials are soft-and hardwood chips and softwood bark.

The thermal efficiency, the part of the sensible heat which is used during one passage of the steam through the bed, increases with increasing mass load (mass of dry matter per unit area) and with decreasing steam mass flux. At a mass load of 30 kg/m the thermal efficiency is about 0.85 even at steam mass fluxes as high as 0.6 kg/m2 s (1.2 m/s). The thermal efficiency proves to be almost independent of pressure and temperature of the steam.

Drying in superheated steam under pressure gives possibilities for pollution free drying, energy recovery. reduced drying time and a very compact drying equipment.

Products are dried i n a pressurized cellular fluid bed by super heated steam blown through the cells. Above the fluid bed dust is separated before the steam is reheated and recirculated to the cells by a fan. The evaporated water leaves the dryer as usable steam at e.g. 3 bar g, and full energy recovery is obtained. Today 14 plants have been builtor are under construction, with capacities from 2 to 40t / h water evaporation.

This technology is suited for drying of beet pulp, residues from starch production of corn or wheat. sludge. spent grain. brown coal. wood chips and bark.

The technology shows great options for integration in steam systems in various industries, whereby drying is possible without using primary energy and pollution is avoided.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

High temperature convective drying of single wood chips with air and superheated steam respectively is studied theoretically. The two-dimensional model presented describes the coupled transport of water, vapour, air and heat. Transport mechanisms included are the convection of gas and liquid, intergas as well as bound water diffusion. In the initial part of the drying process, moisture is transported to the surface mainly due to capillary forces in the transversal direction where evaporation occurs, As the surface becomes dry, the drying front moves towards the centre of the particle and an overpressure is simultaneously built up which affects the drying process

The differences between drying in air and steam respectively can be assigned to the physical properties of the drying medium. The period of constant drying rate which does not exist (or is very short) in air drying becomes more significant with decreasing amounts of air in the drying medium and is clearly visible in Dure superheated steam drying. The maximal drying rate is larger in air drying, and shorter drying times are obtained since the heat flux to the wood chip particle increases with increasing amounts of air in the drying medium. The period of falling drying rate can be divided into two parts: in the first, the drying rate is dependent upon the humidity of the drying medium whereas in the second, there is no such correlation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

An investigation of the thermal drying of lignite has been carried out, by using an indirect heat pilot rotary drum. The process aims at the production of dry lignite and clean steam as part of a gasification procedure. Both flighted and bare drum modes have been employed. Temperature profiles along the dryer length, the amount of evaporation (moisture conversion) and the solids residence time distribution (RTD) were measured. A non-isothermal model was tested under three different regimes of solids flow. Model integration, by taking account of experimental amount of evaporation at dryer exit and temperature profiles along the dryer length, has been utilized in the validation of drying kinetics and heat transfer correlations. Model predictions compare satisfactorily with the operating data of an indirect heat industrial lignite dryer. Overall heat transfer coefficients of the pilot rotary dryer were found to agree well with those reported for direct heat dryers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Low-fat snack products are the driving forces for the drying of tortilla chips before frying. Super-heated steam impingement drying of foods has the advantage of improved energy efficiency and product quality. The temperature profile, drying curves, and the physical properties (shrinkage, crispiness, starch gelatinization and microstructure) of tortilla chips dried at different superheated steam temperatures and heat transfer coefficients were measured. Results indicated that the steam temperature had a greater effect on the drying curve than the heat transfer coefficient within the range of study. The microstructure of the samples after steam drying showed that higher steam temperature resulted in more pores and coarser appearance. The modulus of deformation and the shrinkage of tortilla chips correlated with moisture content. A higher steam temperature caused less shrinkage and a higher modulus of deformation. The pasting properties showed that samples dried under a higher steam temperature and a higher heat transfer coefficient gelatinized less during drying and had a higher ability to absorb water. Comparison of the superheated steam drying and air drying revealed that at elevated temperatures the superheated steam provided higher drying rates. Furthermore, there was a less starch gelatinization associated with air drying compared to superheated steam drying.  相似文献

Imatran Voima Oy together with Technical Research Centre of Finland has carried out experimental research on fuel drying at high pressure steam atmosphere. The pilot dryer is a pressurized flash dryer. Since its commissioning in 1991, the dryer has been used for drying experiments of peat and wood biomass for about 1000 h. The dryer operates at 23 bar pressure steam atmosphere with capacity of abt. 1000 kg/h of wet feedstock.

The developed high pressure steam dryer is planned to be used in a power plant process suitable for wet fuels as peat, biomass, and brown coal. The process is based on the connection of a pressurized fuel dryer, a pressurized gasifier, and a gas turbine. The integration of the high pressure steam dryer to the process increases the power generating efficiency of the process essentially.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a unified model for simulation of cocurrent and countercurrent dispersion-type dryers. The main industrial applications are to pneumatic conveying (flash) dryers and cascading (direct) rotary dryers. The basic model is a one-dimensional incremental (stepwise) simulation, which has been developed over a number of years Equations for particle motion, heat and mass transfer, heat and mass balances and local gas conditions are solved simultaneously over a small increment along the dryer. All workers have previously had considerable difficulty in obtaining a good fit between simulations and actual results from pilot-plants or large-scale industrial dryers. A new “fitting mode” calculation overcomes this by identifying the parameters which need to be adjusted, concentrating on those which cannot be measured accurately. Excellent agreement has been obtained between the model and experimental data by this method. The paper also presents revised formulations for particle motion and heat transfer in rotary dryers. The model has been incorporated into two computer programs for flash and rotary dryers respectively, and results from the former are shown for a case study.  相似文献

A deterministic model was developed to perform a board-by-board simulation of a forced convective batch lumber kiln. Individual board properties may be input and dryer operating parameters varied. The drying rates are empirical correlations based on single-board laboratory tests. The model incorporates the thermodynamic properties of the wood and gas, as well as mass and energy balances within the lumber stack. It also accounts for differences in heat and mass transfer resulting from position and changing gas properties throughout the dryer. The rate of drying predicted by the model and the final moisture content distribution were verified by weighing boards in a batch kiln before, during, and after drying. The application of the model is illustrated by simulating four common scenarios.  相似文献

This report reviews some fundamental and practical aspects of steam drying technologies based mainly on studies published in Japan. Steam drying kinetics, and some industrial technologies particularly for drying of foods, textiles and sludges are reviewed with focus on quality of dried material, drying time, dryer selection and energy recovery from steam dryer exhaust. For energy recovery, heat pump technologies are outlined along with characteristics of different types of steam compressors. A new process is proposed for steam drying; it combines a direct-indirect dryer followed by a direct steam dryer for internal moisture removal.  相似文献

Abstract

The drying and hydrodynamic characteristics of iron ore particles in a vertical pneumatic conveying dryer (0.078 m ID × 6.0 m high) have been determined. The pressure drop decreases along the height at the acceleration region, while it remains constant irrespective of the height in the fully developed region. The degree of particle drying in the dilute pneumatic region increases with increasing superficial inlet gas velocity at constant inlet gas temperature and solid injection rate. However, it decreases with increasing solid injection rates at identical superficial inlet gas velocity and inlet gas temperature. The degree of particle drying increases from 48.6 to 82.5% as the inlet gas temperature increases from 100 to 400 °C.  相似文献

Pneumatic conveying drying (PCD) is a combination of heat and mass transfer and pneumatic handling technology. This technology has been extensively used in chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries, as well as many others. The PCD technique is beneficial for agricultural products, because it can achieve high-quality drying with reduced heat damage in a very short time. In this study, one-dimensional and three-dimensional mathematical models for the drying of sawdust particles in a pneumatic dryer were developed and verified with experiments. The three-dimensional modeling was done with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package (ANSYS FLUENT, Ver. 13.0, Ansys, Inc.), in which the gas phase is modeled as a continuum using the Euler approach, and the droplet/particle phase is modeled by a discrete phase model with a Lagrange approach. One-dimensional analysis was performed in MATLAB (Ver. 7.0). The experiments were carried out to validate the model in a pneumatic dryer with a horizontal length of 1 m, vertical height of 1.1 m, and diameter of 0.14 m. Sawdust, a raw material used for producing pellets, was prepared from well-seasoned pinewood timber. The initial moisture content of the sawdust was 22% (wb). The hot air inlet temperature in the dryer was fixed at 100°C. The variations in air pressure, air velocity, air temperature, and particle moisture content were investigated along the length of the dryer. The final moisture contents of sawdust and air temperature were reduced by 2% (wb) and 5°C, respectively. The simulated values were in good agreement with the experimental values. The developed model was then employed for the design of a pilot-scale pneumatic dryer (length 7 m and diameter 0.14 m). The final moisture content of the sawdust particles was reduced to 14% (wb) when the dryer length was increased from 1 to 7 m. In addition, the modeling was performed using buffers in the pilot-scale dryers. The use of a buffer noticeably increased the drying efficiency.  相似文献

Our developed model was solved numerically and two operating conditions, adiabatic and given pneumatic dryer wall temperature, were simulated. Comparison between the prediction of the numerical models of Rocha and DryPak, (Pakowski, 1996), which were presented by Silva and Correa (1998), with the prediction of our numerical simulation reviled better agreements with DryPak then with the models of Rocha. The results of the developed model were also compared with experimental results of Baeyens et al. (1995) and Rocha.  相似文献
