The bulk volume shrinkage was linearly related to instantaneous grain moisture reduction. The shrinkage coefficient was found to be primarily a function of air relative humidity. The Bakker-Arkema's bulk grain drying model was modified to incorporate the shrinkage equation. A correction factor for thin layer drying equation was also introduced to reduce deviation between the experimental and simulated moisture content. The Bakker-Arkema model showed significant improvement due to these modifications.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper reviews a recent development in the heat and moisture transfer modeling for drying single layes of agricultural grains. A diffusion model with time-varying boundary condition predicts the complex shape of the drying curve well. A conduction model with evaporating boundary condition, when used with the Gamson correlation for convective heat transfer coefficient, accurately predicts experimental grain surface temperature. The new modewls were tested experimentally, drying wheat and barley in a thin-layer dryer useing 40 to 175 c air and the initial moisture ranging from 0.20 to 0.40 (decimal dry basis). It is shown that grain temperatures calculated by the conduction heat equation, when used in conjunction with a probit-type germination loss model, predict germination values different from those predicted by the lump heat equation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A method based on Fourier series solution to Fick's diffusion equation has been proposed to evaluate effective diffusivity (D) as a function of moisture content in agricultural materials undergoing shrinkage during drying process. The shrinkage kinetics of the particulate was used to correlate its instantaneous size (spherical equivalent diameter) as a function of material moisture content A computer program was used to evaluate D based on shrinkage kinetics and experimental drying data and relate it to moisture content. The method was used to obtain moisture diffusivity data for thin layer drying of grape and corn.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Volumetric and thickness shrinkage evaluated by direct measurement and n-heptane displacement were determined during convective and freeze drying of Golden delicious apples. For convective drying, the influence of blanching and diameter/thickness ratio of the apple disks used were analysed at different levels of moisture content under constant conditions. It was found that shrinkage of dried samples, both by convection and by freeze-drying, is anisotropic to a level which depends on sample geometry (ratio diameter/thickness) used. Blanching did not affect shrinkage results.

Based on results obtained a new model to predict bulk density of materials during drying is proposed, showing a better fit to experimental data than previous models reported in the literature. This model was further used to predict changes in apple porosity during drying.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

An empirical equation as a function of drying time and temperature was developed to calculate the moisture ratio required Tor balch fluidized bed dryers design for amaranth grain drying

The relative deviations of the moisture ratio values calculated with the proposed equation with regard to the experimental ones ranged between 0.014 and 0.095 for a drying air temperature between 60 and 100 ° C, and a grain initial moisture content between 23.5 and 16.6 % wb.  相似文献

Abstract

The drying process of salted pieces of shark muscle (Carckarhinus limbatus) was accomplished using three air conditions (20 °C -40 %RH; 30 °C - 30 %RH; 40 °C - 45 %RH) and two air velocities (0.5 m/s; 3.0 m/s). Shrinkage of material during drying was correlated as a linear function between linear dimension and moisture content. The experimental drying data were obtained using both the diffusional model with moisture content parameter (considering no shrinkage) and the diffusional model with moisture concentration parameter (considering shrinkage). The values of effective diffusivity varied between 1.50×l0?10m2/s and 2 85×l0?10m2/s for drying process considering no shrinkage and between 0.87×l0?10m2/s and 1.61×l0?10m2/s for process considering shrinkage. The activation energy was calculated assuming an Arrhenius' type equation. The values were 17.94 KJ/mol with the air velocity of 0.5 m/s and 21.94 kJ/mol with the air velocity of 3,0 m/s for effective diffusivity without shrinkage. The values were 2.04 kJ/mol with the air velocity of 0.5 m/s and 16.12 kJ/mol with the air velocity of 3.0 m/s for effective diffusivity with shrinkage. These low activation energy values, calculated considering the shrinking effect, show that the side effects during drying reduces the effective diffusivity dependence on temperature  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The paper presents new data for thin-layer drying characteristics of Thai long grain rough rice measured under various conditions of drying air temperature (35 to 60?°C), drying air relative humidity (30 to 70 % ) and the initial moisture content of rough rice (20 to 40 % dry basis). Empirical equations were developed using the instantaneous weight, the weight loss and drying time, with temperature, relative humidity and initial moisture content of rough rice as the independent variables. A computer program was developed to simulate the deep-bed drying process. The thin-layer drying equation developed before was used in the computer simulation. Experimental data from the fixed bed dryer were compared with the results from the calculation.  相似文献

Abstract

Bulk density, particle density, shrinkage and porosity were experimentally determined at various moisture content during air drying for apple, carrot and potato cubes. A simple mathematical model was used to predict the above properties versus material moisture content. Four parameters were incorporated in the model: enclosed water density, dry solids' density, bulk density of dry solids, and volume-shrinkage coefficient. The model was fitted to experimental data satisfactorily, and the parameters were estimated. The influence of varying drying conditions was also investigated.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In timber exposed to moisture variations, drying distortions is a serious problem that might result into sawn timber and other wood products unsuitable for construction purposes. Two characteristics of wood are that its behaviour is strongly orthotropic and that it is very sensitive to variations in moisture content. In addition, wood is characterised by variation in its properties from pith to bark. A further important property of wood, which affects its behaviour, is its spiral grain. For timber containing much compression wood the drying distortions are also highly dependent upon where the compression wood is located in the sawn boards. The present study concerns an experimental investigation of density, grain angles, shrinkage parameters and longitudinal elastic modulus in a number of spruce boards containing much compression wood. On the basis of the data obtained, numerical simulations have been carried out in order to determine the deformations that developed in the boards during changes in moisture content.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The effect of drying method on bulk density, particle density, specific volume and porosity of banana, apple, carrot and potato at various moisture contents was investigated, using a large set of experimental measurements. Samples were dehydrated with five different drying methods: conventional, vacuum, microwave, freeze and osmotic drying. A simple mathematical model was used In order to correlate the above properties with the material moisture content. Four parameters with physical meaning were incorporated in the model: the enclosed water density pw, the dry solid density ps, the dry solid bulk density pbo and the volume shrinkage coefficient β'. The effect of drying method on the examined properties was taken into account through its effect on the corresponding parameters. Only, dry solid bulk density was dependent on both material and drying method. Freeze dried materials developed the highest porosity, whereas the lowest one was obtained using conventional air drying.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A mathematical model is developed to simulate the drying of a hygroscopic porous solid. The model, based on the gradient of moisture concentration per unit volume as driving force, takes into account the migration of water within the solid by diffusion and the evaporation at the interface. A mathematical equation for diffusion in a slab with three dimensional shrinkage has been derived, assuming that the magnitude of shrinkage is equal to the volume of water evaporated. The resulting diffusion equation and the heat balance eauation for infinite thermal conductivitv were solved n;merically with temperature dependent diffusion coefficient and convective boundary conditions. The deDendence of the desorption isotherm with temperature is-also considered. corndination of all these factors in a single model provides a tool that is effective in predictinq dryinq behavior and also useful in exploring and understanding the impact of important variables on the drying process.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Geometrically similar spouted beds with draft plates were used to obtain the drying characteristics of freshly harvested shelled corn with 0.28 to 0.31 kg/kg initial moisture content at different air inlet temperatures and bed heights. Thermal equilibrium between air and grains was achieved at minimum spouting conditions. The drying kinetics of shelled corn in a drafted two-dimensional spouted bed was found to be of the "thin layer" type. Expressions for the model parameters in Page's equation accounting for the bed geometry, grain moisture content, and drying conditions were developed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper deals with comprehensive mathematical and numerical modeling of deep-bed grain drying. In order to build the process model, it is necessary to analyze the transport in both grain and gas phases. Experimental works were carried out for a layer of grain bed in order to validate the models. The models consider momentum, energy, and mass conservation within grain and drying air phase. The two-dimensional dynamic equations of energy and mass conservation are solved numerically by finite-difference method (FDM) and utilizing alternating direction implicit algorithm within grain and drying air phase, while momentum conservation are solved by finite difference method by utilizing Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equations (SIMPLE) algorithm. Furthermore, the models will be applied in consideration with developing and designing dryer in order to simulate humidity and temperature profiles of the drying gas together with moisture content and temperature of grain across dryer in term of the dryer performance. The simulations show that the models can be used to predict the dynamic drying characteristic profiles as well as the superficial velocity of drying air phase across dryer.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The time evolution of the moisture content in a grain batch fluidized bed dryer is estimated by means of an on–line non–linear estimator (Marquardt–Levenberg algorithm). The inputs to the estimation algorithm are on–line temperature measurements and the output is the surface moisture content. The surface moisture content is used for predicting the grain moisture content through the solution of a single ordinary differential equation that combines the moisture and energy balances over the dryer. In this way the drying curves are obtained through incorporating in a very simple model easily obtainable physical information of the process.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A rotary drum dryer prototype was designed, fabricated and tested to combine convection drying with conduction heating of paddy to increase moisture reduction rates. Ambient air forced inside the drum counter-flow to the direction of the cascading grains brought about “dryeration” of the hot grains, resulting in cooler grain output and increased moisture reduction rates. Its partial drying capacity doubled that of the benchmark pre-dryer at 5?rpm drum speed and quadrupled at 7?rpm, requiring only a single-pass operation. Tests using freshly harvested and re-wetted paddy showed that partial drying capacity, final moisture content and moisture reduction rate were all significantly affected by counter-flow air velocity, Its overall thermal efficiency was also 50% higher.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Rough rice at about 21% (wet basis) was dried at various conditions of temperatures and evaporating capacities of air. The influence of both parameters on drying rate has been studied. At high temperatures, high drying rates can be achieved with low evaporating capacities. In addition, desorption isotherms of rough rice were measured at 35, 60 and 85°C and the experimental isotherms data were fitted using a modified Pfost equation.

A compartmental model was developed to simulate the grain moisture content. Heat and mass transfer coefficients were optimized using a Nelder & Mead method. Internal mass transfer coefficient was written as an exponential function of the average moisture content and temperature of the grain and the external mass transfer coefficient as a function of air temperature. The compartmental approach predicts very well the average moisture content with a mean error of about 5% in static and dynamic conditions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Non-linear partial differential equations are presented for two dimensional heat and mass transfer within a single grain kernel during drying. In this model, the moisture evaporation inside the kernel is considered. The moisture is assumed to diffuse to the outer boundary of the kernel in liquid form and evaporate on the surface of the kernel. The influence of temperature and moisture content on grain properties is also considered in the simulation. The Non-linear partial differential equations are solved using the finite element method and simulation data is verified on a thin layer dryer for wheat kernels. The comparison shows that the simulated results have a high accuracy with average relative error of about 5%. The results of the finite element analysis can be used for grain quality evaluation, drying simulation studies and stress analysis of grain kernel.  相似文献

Abstract

This work presents a dirTusion model and experimental investigation or com drying with tempering. The model solves numerically the dirTusion equation for a hygroscopic porous solid consisting of two concentric spheres (starchy endosperm and pericarp) with different shell thickness and relative resistances to moisture flow. Multipass drying was simulated to evaluate the effect of tempering on drying process. Predicted moisture profiles within the kernel were used to evaluate the actual time for complete tempering or tempering index. The effect of the initial moisture for tempering and the number of drying passes on the net drying time were analyzed. A mathematical expression was formulated to estimate the tempering index under different tempering conditions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A one-dimensional stress model was proposed for drying of radiata pine lumber, which has considered wood moisture shrinkage, instantaneous stress-strain relationships, mechano-sorptive creep, time-induced creep and temperature effects. In addition, wood hardening behaviour in the plastic region and differences between stress increase and decrease have been taken into account. The proposed Stress model can predict stress development and relief in a drying cycle once the required wood mechanical and Theological properties have been quantified.

Drying experiments were performed to dry Pinus radiata sap wood boards of 100×40×590 mm in a tunnel dryer. In the experiment, wood temperature, moisture content gradient and residual stress through board thickness were measured. The drying cycle included HT drying, cooling and final steam conditioning. The measured stress patterns were in agreement with the model predictions. However, more accurate calculations will be made once the detailed experimental data for radiata pine wood mechanical and rheological properties are available.  相似文献
