The drying characteristics of yam slices under different constant relative humidity (RH) and step-down RH levels were studied. A mass transfer model was developed based on Bi-Di correlations containing a drying coefficient and a lag factor to describe the drying process. It was validated using experimental data. Results showed that the drying air with constant RH levels of 20, 30, and 40%, temperature of 60°C, and air velocity of 1.5 m/s had an insignificant effect on drying time. This phenomenon was likely attributed to the fact that higher RH led to a rapid increase in sample’s temperature. The higher sample temperature could provide an additional driving force to water diffusion and thereby promote the moisture movement, which could minimize the negative effect of lower the drying rate in the initial drying stage. Applying air with 40% RH for 15 min in the initial stage achieved the desired color and reduced the drying time by 25% compared to the drying time under continuous dehumidification from an initial RH of 40%. Using the developed Bi-Di correlation, the estimated Biot number, effective moisture diffusivity, and mass transfer coefficient ranged from 0.1024 to 0.1182, 1.1133 × 10?10 to 8.8144 × 10?9 m2/s, and 1.8992 × 10?9 to 1.7364 × 10?7 m/s, respectively. A rather high correlation coefficient of determination (R2 between 0.9871 and 0.9971) was determined between the experimental and predicted moisture contents. The present findings contribute to a better understanding of the effect of relative humidity on drying characteristics. The developed Bi-Di correlation provided a new method to determine the effective diffusivity of moisture in drying.  相似文献

The drying characteristics of plaster of Paris (POP) under microwave irradiation were studied for different shapes of materials through various drying parameters like microwave power, initial moisture content, and drying time. An empirical model for the estimation of moisture ratio was developed using the drying kinetic data of POP. Further, the experimental data on moisture ratio of POP for different operating conditions were fitted with the nine basic drying model equations. Based on the observations, the constants and coefficients of the literature models were rewritten in the form of Arrhenius and logarithmic expressions considering microwave power as input variable. Fifty-eight new model expressions were derived by changing the constants and coefficients and tested using the present experimental data. From the analysis of RMSE, χ2, and EF parameters for the derived models, a suitable empirical model (Model No. 55, RMSE = 0.0874; χ2 = 0.0020; EF = 0.9999) was established to represent the present experimental data on microwave drying of POP.  相似文献

The objectives of this research were to investigate empirical and diffusion models for thin-layer crumb rubber drying for producing STR20 rubber using hot air temperatures of 110–130°C and to study the effect of drying parameters such as inlet drying temperature, volumetric flow rate, and initial moisture content on the quality of dried rubber. Finally, a mathematical drying model for predicting the drying kinetics of crumb rubber was developed using inlet air flow rates of 300–600 m3/min-m3 of crumb rubber (equivalent to 1.8–5.0 m/s) with the crumb rubber thickness fixed at 0.25 m. The average initial moisture content of samples was in the ranges of 40 and 50% dry basis while the desired final moisture content was below 5% dry basis. The results showed that the drying equation of crumb rubber was highly related to the inlet air temperature, while the drying constant value was not proportional to the initial moisture content. Consequently, the experimental data were formulated using nine empirical models and the analytical solution of moisture ratio equation was developed by Fick's law of diffusion. The result showed that the simulated data best fitted the logarithmic model and was in reasonable agreement to the experimental data. The effective diffusion coefficient of crumb rubber was in the range of 1.0 × 10?9 to 2.15 × 10?5 m2/s corresponding to drying temperatures between 40 and 150°C, respectively. The effects of air recirculation, inlet drying temperature, initial moisture contents, air flow rate, and drying strategies on specific energy consumption and quality of samples were reported. The experiments were conducted using two different drying strategies as follows: one-stage and two-stage drying conditions. The results showed that initial moisture content and air flow rates significantly affected the specific energy consumption and quality of rubber, while the volumetric air flow rate acted as dominant effect to the specific energy consumption. The simulated results concluded that the percentage of recycled air between 90 and 95% provided the lowest specific energy consumption as compared to the others.  相似文献

Separation and purification of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylinositol (PI) fractions to their utmost purity is still a challenging task industrially due to the molecular and structural complexity of lecithin molecules. The present study deals with the filtration of the PI-rich fraction followed by drying of the cake for its further purification and value addition. Filtration of the PI-rich fraction was carried out under constant pressure conditions followed by the drying of the cake in a vacuum tray dryer. The average specific cake resistance (αav) as a function of operating pressure was studied and it showed little variation with respect to the applied pressure differential. The initial solvent content in the cake after filtration was found to be in the vicinity of 1 kg solvent/kg dry solid, which was then subsequently reduced in the drying stage to 0.04 kg solvent/kg dry solid. The drying kinetics of the cake was studied at different drying temperatures in a vacuum tray dryer operated under varying degree of vacuum. The drying rate curve showed a prominent falling rate period with the effective solvent diffusivity in the range of 5.4 × 10?10 m2s?1 to 1.42 × 10?9 m2s?1within the temperature range of 40–60°C. Critical analysis of the dried PI fraction was carried out in terms of phosphatidylinositol content and color. The drying data were analyzed using various models and Das et al.'s model, the modified Henderson and Pabis model, and the Page model were found to provide the best fit sin terms of root mean square error (RMSE), chi square, and correlation coefficient (R 2).  相似文献

The effects of drying temperature (50, 60, and 70°C) and absolute humidity (65, 90, 115, 140 g/kg at the initial stage) on drying kinetics and color attributes of apricot halves under process-based drying temperature and humidity integration control (PDTHIC) were investigated. Results indicated that appropriate PDTHIC could reduce the drying time by 18.75% compared to the control group. The absolute humidity parameter should be controlled well rather than continuously dehumidify for traditional practices. The moisture effective diffusivity (Deff) at 70°C presented drastic fluctuations with increasing absolute humidity parameters, calculated using the Weibull distribution model. The activation energy (Ea) of samples treated by continuous dehumidification and PDTHIC were 31.40 and 74.18 kJ/mol, respectively. The variation trend of color parameters was different from the conventional hot air drying probably due to the dehydration mechanism. Observation of the microstructure of the dried samples indicated that the PDTHIC process can enhance the drying rate of apricot through generating a larger pore network compared to continuous dehumidification at the same temperature. The findings of the current work clearly indicated that process-based drying temperature and humidity integration control enhances the drying kinetics of apricot halves, leading to a promising technology for energy savings.  相似文献

以尺寸规格为200mm×100mm×20mm的落叶松为试材,在干燥温度分别为60℃、80℃,绝对压力分别为0.02MPa,0.04MPa,0.06MPa和0.08MPa的真空条件下,通过对试件干燥速率及干燥缺陷的测量及对比分析,得到如下结论:同一绝对压力下,干燥温度为80℃时试材的干燥速率为60℃时的1.77~3.85倍,而且随着绝对压力的减小,倍数增大;干燥温度升高,木材纤维饱和点(FSP)以上的干燥速率增加率小于FSP以下的,且随绝对压力的减小而增大;干燥温度为60℃时,试材干燥速率及其增加率受绝对压力的影响均较小;随绝对压力的降低、温度的升高,木材缺陷的程度增大。  相似文献

This report investigates the low-temperature bed drying of biomass particles for use in a gasification process. Experimental drying equipment capable of drying up to 0.25 m3 of biomass batchwise was constructed. The experimental result indicates that the drying equipment and applied method are appropriate to evaluate different drying parameters and their influence on the drying course. Drying parameters such as air temperature, air velocity, bed height, and type of wood are studied regarding the drying rate, final moisture content in the material, and bed pressure drop. The constant-rate and falling-rate drying period are studied to obtain an energy efficient drying process. Measurements show that the drying zone (where the actual drying occurs) progresses irregularly through the bed.  相似文献

The drying kinetics of poplar lumber was experimentally investigated as a function of drying temperature (115, 135, 160, 185 and 205°C) during a periodic hot-press-drying process. Poplar lumber was dried under contact (compression ratio of 10%) and high-press states (compression ratio of 44%). Compared with the contact-state, the high-press-state showed higher drying rate and higher efficiency of removing free water than bound water in wood. Eight mathematical models from the literature were established to analyze the drying behavior. The Weibull model, with an average determination coefficient R2 of 0.9958, fitted well for all applied drying conditions. The scale parameter decreased with increasing drying temperature and was lower for high-press-state drying compared with that for contact-state drying. Moisture diffusivity and activation energy were calculated according to the Weibull model. Diffusivity increased with increasing drying temperature, with the average value of 1.734?×?10?6 and 3.313?×?10?6?m2/s and activation energy of 34.79 and 32.85?kJ/mol for contact-state drying and high-press-state drying, respectively. Hot-press drying created an M-shaped curve of density distribution, with high density at the two surface regions gradually decreasing toward the core region. The contact state-dried wood showed increased density near the wood surface. Both average density and peak density improved in the case of high-press-state-dried wood. Furthermore, the hydrophilic index of wood for high-press-state drying was lower than that of the contact-state drying, and the opposite was true regarding crystallinity index. The hygroscopicity of high-press-dried poplar decreased with lower equilibrium moisture content and higher moisture excluding efficiency, compared with contact-state-dried poplar. The rapid, high-quality drying of poplar lumber through periodic hot-press was more potentially achieved by the high-press-state compared with contact-state drying.  相似文献

Abstract

Local nonuniformity of moisture content during drying is doubly disadvantageous. Moisture nonuniformity reduces drying effectiveness, increasing drying cost or reducing drying capacity, and may decrease product quality for printing through effects such as cockling and curl. These problems can occur with the now dominant process of cylinder drying, but become much more acute with the various higher intensity drying techniques which are competing to become elements of the higher speed hybrid dryer sections of the future. For quantitative characterization of moisture nonuniformity a novel method applicable to paper being dried by various processes was developed, then demonstrated for one high intensity air convection process, through air drying. During drying, the local moisture content was determined for many 2.5 mm diameter sensing areas by very rapid scanning with a custom design 3-wavelength infrared paper moisture instrument. For local moisture nonuniformity thus determined, the coefficient of variation provides a standard basis for comparison between paper types and drying conditions. For kraft paper from 20 to 120 g/m2, the effects on local moisture nonuniformity were evaluated for drying intensity and for several paper parameters—formation, grammage, and initial moisture content. The drying nonuniformity index was found to parallel both formation quality and drying intensity. An unexpected finding was that over the 20–120 g/m2 range, local moisture nonuniformity passes through a maximum at 30 g/m2. Sheet initial moisture content produces the largest effect, with moisture nonuniformity index being both high and very sensitive to this parameter for initial moisture content above the fibre saturation point. Another finding from these unique measurements is that, for the same 2.5 mm diameter sensing areas, there is a clear correlation between moisture nonuniformity index and local grammage.  相似文献

The changes in the characteristics of plaster of Paris (pop) during drying operation under microwave irradiation conditions, namely surface morphology, effective moisture diffusivity, and absorption of microwave, were studied. The drying characteristics and kinetics of the process during microwave drying of plaster were studied for rectangular-faced cuboids (80 × 70 × 15, L × B × H in mm) through various drying parameters like microwave power input, initial moisture content, and drying time. Further, the experimental data on moisture ratio of plaster for different operating conditions were obtained and the optimization of the microwave drying process parameters was performed with response surface methodology (RSM) by considering all the above-said independent variables. Based on the RSM analysis, the optimum values of the process variables were obtained as: initial moisture content (A) 60%; microwave power input (B) 180 W; and drying time (C) 480 S.  相似文献

A natural circulation solar dryer for drying products in the form of powder has been developed. It is of modular design and aperture area of one module is 3.34 m2. A new concept of moveable glazing has been introduced for ease in loading and unloading. Air entering the dryer moves in a zig-zag path as it flows over the product and under each tray before leaving from the top. There is a provision to dry the product under shade. Also, the dryer can be dismantled and stored in a room during off-season. The dryer was tested to dry Di-calcium phosphate (DCP) at Ludhiana (31°N). The average drying efficiency for a batch was found to be 54.0%. The cost of drying DCP using this solar dryer was 0.56 Rupees per kg of dried DCP as compared to 1.94 Rupees per kg of dried DCP for a wood-fueled industrial dryer. In comparison to a solar tunnel dryer for DCP drying, the initial investment per kilogram of the dried DCP, floor area per kilogram of wet DCP, and cost of drying per kilogram of dried DCP for this dryer was reduced by 7.1%, 67.2%, and 16.4% respectively.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The effect of various pretreatments on drying kinetics as well as quality parameters of selected vegetables and fruits was studied experimentally in a convective dryer. The pretreatments tested include application of pinholes and drilled holes of different diameters and densities, blanching and freezing. Potato, cassava, dragon fruit and red chilli were used as the sample drying materials. As expected, increase of the diameter and density of the holes under fixed drying conditions increased the drying rate. Samples with drilled holes showed better drying performance than those with pinholes. The improvement of the drying rate was found to be dependent on the physical properties and the initial moisture content of the material. Results show that the drying performance of the products that possess a skin of low moisture diffusivity, such as chilli, can be improved significantly by blanching and making perforations in the skin. Overall changes of color and volume shrinkage during drying of the samples with and without holes were similar. The effect of different modes of heat input, such as convection, conduction and radiation, on the drying performance of the treated samples was also experimentally investigated. On-off type controllers were used to regulate the power of the heaters and maintain the product temperature within a range of pre-set values. Convection combined with radiation displayed the highest drying rate.  相似文献

Abstract

Characteristics of microwave drying of wood strands with different initial moisture contents and geometries were investigated using a commercial small microwave oven under different power inputs. Temperature and moisture changes along with the drying efficiency were examined at different drying scenarios. Extractives were analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The results showed that the microwave drying process consisted of three distinct periods (warm-up period, evaporation period, and heating-up period) during which the temperature, moisture change, and drying efficiency could vary. Most of the extractives were remnant during microwave drying. It was observed that with proper selections of power input, weight of drying material, and drying time, microwave drying could increase the drying rate, save up to 50% of energy consumption, and decrease volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions when compared with the conventional drying method.  相似文献

The two existing theories describing drying of latex films or coatings are reconsidered. Subsequently, a novel mathematical drying model is presented, the simulations of which can match and explain experimental drying rate data of two previous investigations with latex films. In contrast to previous model studies, but in agreement with observations, simulations suggest that during the falling rate period of the drying process of a latex film, a porous skin of partly coalesced latex particles is indeed formed, which limits transport of water vapour from the receding air–liquid interphase to the surface of the film. The value of the effective diffusion coefficient of water vapour in the dry and partly coalesced layer (7 × 10−7 m2/s at 19–24 °C), the adjustable parameter of the model for the falling rate period, was found to be independent of initial wet film thickness (89–1322 μm), latex particle size (500–600 nm), initial polymer volume concentration (19–47 vol.%), and molecular weight of latex polymer (not quantified). Simulations also demonstrate that the transition from a constant to a falling drying rate in all cases takes place when the polymer volume concentration of the latex film is equal to that of hexagonal closest packed monodisperse spheres (74 vol.%). Consequently, the model has predictive properties and model inputs are only needed on the specific experimental (or field) conditions of interest. The effects on drying time of variations in relative humidity, wet film thickness, initial polymer volume concentration, and air flow velocity are simulated and analysed using the new model.  相似文献

A mathematical model for through drying of paper at constant pressure drop was developed. The model is based on physical properties; hence, basis weight, pressure drop, drying air temperature, pore size distribution, initial gas fraction, and tortuosity are important input parameters to the model. The model was solved for different combinations of the variables basis weight, drying air temperature, and pressure drop corresponding to industrial conditions and the results were compared with data from bench-scale experiments. The simulations show that the drying rate curve is very sensitive to the air flow rate and that correctly modeling the correlation between pressure drop and air flow rate is the most important factor for a successful model for through drying. The model was tuned by adjusting the parameters initial gas fraction and tortuosity in order to give the best possible fit to experimental data. For a given basis weight and pressure drop, different drying air temperatures resulted in relatively constant values of the fitted parameters. This means that the model can well predict the effects of changes in drying air temperature based on a tuning of the model performed at the same basis weight and pressure drop. However, for a given basis weight, an increase in pressure drop yielded fitted parameters that were somewhat different; i.e., a lower initial gas fraction and a higher tortuosity, a change that increases the resistance to air flow. This implies that the correlation between pressure drop and air flow rate in the model does not quite capture the nonlinear relationship shown by the experiments.  相似文献

This study aimed at investigating thin-layer drying characteristics of sludge mixed with different rice straw contents (1, 2, 3, and 5% wb). The experimental results showed that adding 1, 2, and 3% (wb) rice straw to sludge is helpful to improve the drying rate of sludge as the surface area and cracks increase but the drying rate of the sludge mixed with 5% (wb) rice straw decreases with a reduction in thermal conductivity. When the content of rice straw is 2% (wb), the increased amplitude of drying rate is the highest, 14.6, 14.8, 16.0, and 17.6% at 100, 120, 140, and 160°C, respectively. The model proposed by this study showed better prediction compared with the other models and satisfactorily described the drying characteristics of sludge/rice straw mixture as well and is applicable under the given experimental conditions. The values of R2, root mean square error (RMSE), and χ2 varied from 0.99935 to 0.99992, 0.00295 to 0.00830, and 0.00001 to 0.00007, respectively.  相似文献

The heat and mass transfer that occurred during drying of soybeans by a combined process using microwave (MW) and convective hot air was studied. A coupled mathematical model was developed to simulate this phenomenon. The soybean samples were re-wetted to 20% wet basis, the selected level of initial moisture content (IMC), and then dried in a domestic microwave oven under various MW power levels from 300 to 390 W, using inlet air with relative humidity of 35, 55, 75, and 95%. The simulated moisture loss profiles obtained from the coupled model compared well with those obtained in the experiments. Results showed that the drying rate decreased from 6.235 × 10?5 to 6.192 × 10?5 kg water/(kg wb s) as the inlet air temperature increased from 30 to 60°C. Furthermore, the drying rate was observed to increase from 6.192 × 10?5 to 6.211 × 10?5 kg water/(kg wb s) as the relative humidity (RH) increased from 35 to 95%.  相似文献

Through drying of paper of basis weight 25 to 50 g/m2 was studied through 89 experiments with 22 to 90°C air at mass flow rates from 0.125 to 1.45 kg/m2s. The complete drying rate curves are represented with five quantitative parameters:moisture contents at the end of the increasing and constant rate periods, the constant drying rate, and exponents for the increasing and falling rate period relations. The constant drying rate period disappears at higher drying intensities leaving the increasing rate period accounting for as much as 37% of the drying. The constant drying rate may be controlled by thermodynamics or by transport phenomena. The critical moisture content depends on effects from the intrinsic local nonuniformity of through drying as well as on sheet average conditions. A universal set of relations was obtained for representation of the complete drying rate curve and was verified for prediction of drying rate and drying time. Through drying rates cannot be increased significantly by providing the drying air as an impingement flow.  相似文献

The complete drying history of paper dried under an array of multiple round jets of air was determined. The drying rate – paper moisture content relations, determined as a continuous function by on–line measurements for about 80 sheets, permitted examination of the following parameters: basis weight 20 to 50 g/m2, which covers the tissue to communication paper range; initial moisture content 1.5 to 3 kg water/kg fibre; nozzle to paper spacing of 5, 7.6 & 8.5 nozzle diameters: nozzle plate open area ratio from 1.4 to 3.1%; jet Reynolds number in the range of 450 to 11.100.

Three methods of quantifying the complete drying rate curves were tested. Use of the common assumption of drying rate linear with moisture content over the falling rate period gave inadequate representation. Secondly, the general method of Churchill for any transport process that has a transition between two asymptotic relations was applied for the fmt time to the drymg of paper.
