This study investigates experimentally and using mathematical modeling the microwave drying of wastewater sludge with determination of moisture diffusivity at different drying conditions. The drying behavior was observed at different power levels (480, 840, and 1,080 W) and different initial masses (90, 120, and 150 g). The observed drying kinetics were divided into three parts: a short adaptation period, a long constant drying rate period, and a falling drying rate period. The maximum drying rate was observed during the constant rate period. Mainly, the results show that the drying rate decreases with the initial mass increase (from 0.45 kg·kg?1·min?1 for 90 g to 0.25 kg·kg?1·min?1 for 150 g) and increases with an increase in power level (from 0.15 kg·kg?1·min?1 at 480 W to 0.45 kg·kg?1·min?1 at 1,080 W). The measurement of the sample dimensions shows that shrinkage can occur and, depending on the drying conditions, it ranged between 0.42 and 0.37 of the sample initial volume. Presenting a more accurate solution of the diffusion model by incorporating shrinkage and finite dimensions of the sample is the novelty of this study. The drying conditions influenced the diffusion coefficient, which ranged from 1.53 × 10?7 to 7.67 × 10?7 m2s?1. Similar to the drying rate, the diffusion coefficient was directly proportional to the power level and inversely proportional to the initial mass. Activation energy was determined using an Arrhenius relationship of the diffusion coefficient as a function of the ratio initial mass to the power level.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this work we suggest the dynamic modeling of a spray dryer considered as a series of well-stirred dryers. That is, a series of dryers in which the output variables are equal to the state variables. The state equations were obtained from the heat and water mass balances in product and air. Additionally, heat and water mass balances in interface jointly with water equilibrium relation between product and air were considered. A pilot spray dryer was modeled assuming one, two, five and 20 well stirred steps. Low-fat milk with 10–20% of solids was dried at different inlet air temperatures (120–160°C), air flow rate of 0.19 kg dry air s?1 and different feed rates (1.4 ? 4.2 × 10?4 kg dry solids s?1). Stationary result showed that the model predicts the experimental air outlet temperature, at different inlet conditions with a maximum deviation of 6°C. The dynamic simulation reproduce the experimental one with moderate accuracy. Experimental dynamic showed that the pilot plant spray dryer has a well-stirred process behavior. The model represents a method for estimate outlet product moisture as function of the outlet air temperature. This has application for automatic control because there is not an easy way to measure on-line measure the outlet product moisture content.  相似文献

Abstract

The concept of the product moisture locus was tested in this work using a pilot-scale modified Niro spray dryer (diameter 0.8 m, height 2 m), where the residence time of the particles inside this spray dryer is lower compared with larger industrial spray dryers. The moisture contents of skim milk powder produced from spray drying skim milk (solids content 8.8% w/v) at different operating conditions, namely different swirl vane angles (0°, 25°, 30°), inlet air temperatures (170°C, 200°C, 230°C) and process fluid flowrates (1.4 kg h?1, 1.6 kg h?1, 1.8 kg h?1), were compared with the predicted equilibrium moisture contents. In addition, the residence time of the particles was also increased in the spray dryer by decreasing the inlet air mass flowrate from 0.016 to 0.013 kg s?1. The outlet moisture contents of the skim milk powder for all the 23 runs carried out in this work were within 0.4% of the equilibrium values. Thus, the skim milk powder particles were in close equilibrium with the gas inside the drying chamber. These equilibrium limitations are confirmed by other literature data (Boonyai, P. Comparative Evaluation of Soymilk Drying in a Spray Dryer and Spouted Bed of Inert Particles. M.Sc. Thesis. Asian Institute of Technology: Bangkok, Thailand, 2000; 90 pp; Harvie, D.J.E.; Langrish, T.A.G.; Fletcher, D.F. A computational fluid dynamics study of a tall-form spray dryer. Trans IChemE 2002, in press). The use of this finding to predict spray dryer performance is demonstrated by mass and energy balance calculations.  相似文献

Meeting food security requirements in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) will require increasing fertilizer use to improve crop yields, however excess fertilization can cause environmental and public health problems in surface and groundwater. Determining the threshold of reasonable fertilizer application in SSA requires an understanding of flow dynamics and nutrient transport in under-studied, tropical soils experiencing seasonal rainfall. We estimated leaching flux in Yala, Kenya on a maize field that received from 0 to 200 kg ha?1 of nitrogen (N) fertilizer. Soil pore water concentration measurements during two growing seasons were coupled with results from a numerical fluid flow model to calculate the daily flux of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3 ?-N). Modeled NO3 ?-N losses to below 200 cm for 1 year ranged from 40 kg N ha?1 year?1 in the 75 kg N ha?1 year?1 treatment to 81 kg N ha?1 year?1 in the 200 kg N ha?1 treatment. The highest soil pore water NO3 ?-N concentrations and NO3 ?-N leaching fluxes occurred on the highest N application plots, however there was a poor correlation between N application rate and NO3 ?-N leaching for the remaining N application rates. The drought in the second study year resulted in higher pore water NO3 ?-N concentrations, while NO3 ?-N leaching was disproportionately smaller than the decrease in precipitation. The lack of a strong correlation between NO3 ?-N leaching and N application rate, and a large decrease in flux between 120 and 200 cm suggest processes that influence NO3 ?-N retention in soils below 200 cm will ultimately control NO3 ?-N leaching at the watershed scale.  相似文献

A study was performed to determine the drying characteristics and quality of barley grain dried in a laboratory scale spouted-bed dryer at 30, 35, 40, and 45°C and an inlet air velocity of 23 m/s?1, and in an IR-convection dryer under an infrared radiation intensity of 0.048, 0.061, 0.073, and 0.107 W cm?2 at an air velocity of 0.5 m/s?1. The results show that the first, relatively short, phase of a sharp decrease in the drying rate was followed by the phase of a slow decrease. The time of barley drying depended on temperature of inlet air in a spouted-bed dryer and on radiation intensities in an IR-convection dryer. Barley drying at 45°C in a spouted-bed dryer was accompanied by the lowest total energy consumption. The average specific energy consumption was lower and the average efficiency of drying was higher for drying in a spouted-bed dryer. The effective diffusivities were in the range 2.20–4.52 × 10?11 m2 s?1 and 3.04–4.79 × 10?11 m2/s?1 for barley dried in a spouted-bed and in an IR-convection dryer, respectively. There were no significant differences in kernel germination energy and capacity between the two drying methods tested.  相似文献

The biodigester effluent (BDE) of a molasses-based alcohol distillery unit was taken for catalytic thermal treatment (catalytic thermolysis) in the presence of CuO catalyst in batch mode in the temperature range of 100° to 140°C and pressure range of 1–9 bar. The catalyst mass loading, Cw, varied between 2 and 5 kg m?3. Thermal treatment at 140°C with a Cw of 3 kg m?3 gave COD reduction of about 70% from its initial value of 34 kg m?3. The BOD reduction was found to be 83% from its initial value of 6.3 kg m?3. The reductions of COD and consequently BOD are due to formation of residues of organics, i.e., carbohydrates, lignin, and proteins, present in the biodigester effluent. The characterization of CuO catalyst through X-ray diffraction shows the presence of the phase of CuO only, at different 2θ values. The kinetic data show two clearly distinct steps, a fast rate process followed by a slower process, adequately described by first-order kinetics with respect to COD. The order with respect to Cw was found to be 0.744 and 0.187 for the first and second steps, respectively.  相似文献

This article describes the analysis of heat and mass transfer coefficients for a single board of Pinus radiata (D. Don) timber over a range of high temperature and superheated steam drying conditions. The calculated heat transfer coefficients were in the range 20 to 60 W m?2 K?1. The mass transfer coefficients were of the order of 2 × 10?8 to 3 × 10?7 kg m?2 s?1, based on the vapor pressure difference, and of the order of 0.002 to 0.04 m s?1 (expressed in terms of mass transfer velocity) based on vapor concentration difference between the surface of the board and the bulk drying medium.  相似文献

This article is concerned with the energy and exergy analyses of the continuous-convection drying of potato slices. The first and second laws of thermodynamics were used to calculate the energy and exergy. A semi-industrial continuous-band dryer has been designed and used for drying experiments. The equipment has a drying chamber of 2 m length and the inlet air used for drying is heated by gas power. The experiments were conducted on potato slices with thickness of 5 mm at three different air temperatures of 50, 60 and 70°C, drying air mass flow rates of 0.61, 1.22, and 1.83 kg/s and feeding rates of 2.31 × 10?4, 2.78 × 10?4, and 3.48 × 10?4 kg/s. The energy utilization and energy utilization ratio were found to vary between 3.75 and 24.04 kJ/s and 0.1513 and 0.3700, respectively. These values show that only a small proportion of the supplied energy by the heater was used for drying. The exergy loss and exergy efficiency were found to be in the range of 0.5987 to 13.71 kJ/s and 0.5713 to 0.9405, respectively, indicating that the drying process was thermodynamically inefficient and much energy was vented in the exhaust air. In addition, the results showed that the feeding rate and the temperature and flow rate of the drying air had an important effect on energy and exergy use. This knowledge will provide insights into the optimization of a continuous dryer and the operating parameters that causes reduction of energy consumption and losses in continuous drying.  相似文献

This study focused on the production of furfural from agricultural and industrial biomass residues by a hydrodistillation process. Corncobs, sugarcane bagasse, and eucalypt wood were treated with sulfuric, hydrochloric, and phosphoric acids as catalysts, with different acid concentrations (1.5 to 5.2 mol.L ?1). In addition, the eucalypt liquor from the auto-hydrolysis, kraft-dissolving pulp production process was also investigated as a source of furfural, using sulfuric and hydrochloric acids as a catalyst (0.9 and 3.9 mol.L ?1) . Furfural yields of 30.2, 25.8, and 13.9% were achieved for corncob, sugarcane bagasse, and eucalypt wood, respectively, on the basis of biomass dry weight. The efficiency of conversion from pentose to furfural using eucalypt liquor from the auto-hydrolysis kraft process was 71.5% using HCl 3.9 mol.L ?1 . Due to the presence of a high amount of pentose, corncob produced the highest amount of furfural, followed by sugarcane bagasse and then eucalypt wood.  相似文献

Industrial production of lactose hydrolyzed milk powder (LHMP) remains challenging. Due to the presence of the monosaccharides glucose and galactose, lactose-free powders tend to suffer stickiness, caking, and browning during drying and storage. We sought to find ideal conditions spray dryer inlet air temperature (θair,in) and concentrated milk flow rate (mCM) for LHMP production. We tested θair,in settings of 115–160°C and mCM of 0.3–1.5?kg?·?h?1, and also applied mass and energetic balances. LHMP generally exhibited higher mass and energetic losses than the control (milk powder containing lactose), as a consequence of the relatively low dryability of LHMP. For a lab scale spray dryer, the ideal conditions settings for LHMP production were θair,in?=?145?±?2°C and mCM?=?1.0?kg?·?h?1, taking into account the mass yield and energetic cost (kJ?·?kg?1 of powder) of the process. These ideal conditions are a potential tool for the industrial development of lactose-free dairy powders.  相似文献

Management intensification has raised concerns about the sustainability of homegardens in the Nuba Mountains, Sudan. This study aimed at assessing the sustainability of these agroecosystems following the approach of carbon (C) and nutrient balances. Three traditional (low input) and three intensified (high input) homegardens were selected for monitoring of relevant input and output fluxes of C, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). The fluxes comprised those related to management activities (soil amendments, irrigation, and biomass removal) as well as estimates of biological N2 fixation, C fixation by photosynthesis, wet and dry deposition, gaseous emission, and leaching. Annual balances for C and nutrients amounted to ?21 kg C ha?1, ?70 kg N ha?1, 9 kg P ha?1 and ?117 kg K ha?1 in high input homegardens and to ?1,722 kg C ha?1, ?167 kg N ha?1, ?9 kg P ha?1 and ?74 kg K ha?1 in low input homegardens. Photosynthesis C was the main C input flux with averaged of 7,047 and 5,610 kg C ha?1 a?1 in high and low input systems, respectively. Biological N2 fixation (17 kg N ha?1 a?1) was relevant only in low input systems. In both systems, the annual input of 77 kg K ha?1 through dust was highly significant and annual gaseous C losses of about 5,900 kg C ha?1 were the main C loss. In both garden types, the removal of biomass accounted for more than half of total nutrient exports of which one-third resulted from weeding and removal of plant residues and two-third from harvest. The observed negative nutrient balances may lead to a long-term decline of crop yields. Among other measures the reuse of C and nutrients in biomass removals during the cleaning of homegardens may allow to partially close C and nutrient cycles.  相似文献

A feedback strategy of drying control of mate leaves in a thin-layer conveyor-belt dryer was experimentally evaluated. Moisture content in the discharge of the continuous dryer was controlled by manually adjusting the speed of the moving belt between 3.7 × 10?4 and 15.2 × 10?4 m s?1 for approximately 7200 s in 120 s time steps. The sets of PID controller parameters and manipulated conveyor velocities were computed with a dynamic drying model at conditions identical to those found in the closed-loop experiments. The model is represented by a system of two partial differential equations built by energy and solute mass balances in the solid phase of the dryer. A large set of experimental drying curves and temperature of mate leaves as a function of drying time, in the temperature range from 55 to 130°C, confirmed the reliability of the considered model. Experimental closed-loop responses of discharge moisture content in the presence of disturbances in the feed moisture content (≈ 0.5 ? 1.7 dry basis) and variations in set-point (≈ 0.1 ? 1.0 dry basis) validated the suggested control scheme.  相似文献

This study examined the ability of two sugarcane bagasse biochars to remove lead from water. The sorption of lead by biochars made from raw (BC) and anaerobically digested sugarcane bagasse (DBC) was compared with a commercial activated carbon (AC) using batch sorption experiments. DBC was a more effective sorbent of lead from water than AC, and far more effective than BC. The maximum lead sorption capacity of DBC (653.9 mmol kg?1) was about double that of AC (395.3 mmol kg?1) and about twenty times higher than that of BC (31.3 mmol kg?1). Post-sorption characterizations using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that the enhanced sorption of lead by DBC was at least partly related to a precipitation mechanism, while surface adsorption was the principal mechanism of sorption of lead onto BC. These results suggest that biochars made from bagasse and other agricultural residues may be effective alternative, low-cost environmental sorbents of lead or other metals. In addition, the enhanced lead sorption ability of the digested bagasse biochar introduces the possibility of developing a novel carbon production method to use anaerobic digestion as a means of biological activation to create high-efficiency sorbents.  相似文献

Urea concentrations in urine patches deposited during animal grazing can be over ten times higher than typical fertiliser application rates, potentially leading to large ammonia (NH3) losses. The process-based NZ-DNDC model was modified to better simulate soil pH changes and ammonia (NH3) emissions following urine application using data collected from a New Zealand field trial. After modification, simulated 30-day NH3 emissions decreased from 506 to 117 kg N ha?1 compared to measured emissions of 78 ± 3 kg N ha?1 (mean ± standard error) and the Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) for daily NH3 emissions increased from ?7.11 to +0.97 for the parameterisation dataset. However, modified model correctly estimated the cumulative emissions for the first 7 days. Using the same parameterisation on an independent dataset from a nearby site gave cumulative 18-day NH3 emissions of 84 kg N  ha?1 compared to the measured 48 ± 2 kg N ha?1 (mean ± standard error). However, the NSE for daily NH3 emissions was ?0.71, indicating site specific parameterisation might be needed. The sensitivity of NH3 emissions to ±5 and ±10% errors in 4 model parameters was tested. The sensitivities ranged from ?0.36 to +0.71. The highest sensitivity was to the rate of NH3 transfer from the soil solution to the atmosphere and the lowest sensitivity was to the rate of urea hydrolysis.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate N2O fluxes from integrated crop-livestock (ICL) and integrated crop-livestock forest (ICLF) systems, continuous pasture and native Cerrado. The experiment was conducted at Embrapa Cerrados, Planaltina-DF, in a Red Oxisol, between February 2012 and April 2014, following the transition of crop to livestock, which began in March 2012, with the sowing of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Piatã, intercropped with sorghum. The experimental design was a randomized block with three replications. The treatments were: cultivated area intercropped with rows of Eucalyptus, spaced 2 × 2 m between plants and 22 m between rows (ICLF); and an area cultivated without tree species (ICL), and also two adjacent reference areas: native Cerrado and continuous pasture. N2O productions were characterized by fluxes below 20 μg N m?2 h?1. The ICL system had the highest cumulative flux with 2.84 kg N ha?1, while the ICLF system obtained cumulative fluxes of 2.05 kg N ha?1. The native Cerrado showed a negative balance, with –0.05 kg N ha?1. The dry season was mostly characterized by low N2O fluxes ranging between 10 μg N m?2 h?1 and negative values, whereas higher N2O fluxes were observed after precipitation events, especially those following a long drought period. The water filled pore space was the factor that best explained N2O fluxes, but higher fluxes were observed after the application of nitrogen fertilizer. There was a positive correlation between microbial biomass carbon and N2O fluxes in the ICL and ICLF systems.  相似文献

The drying mechanism of fermented sausages (sucuks) that were cylindrical rod shaped, 40 cm long and 4 cm diameter, during ripening under natural convection conditions at different temperatures (15 to 30°C) was examined. To simulate the experimental drying curves, three empirical models and a diffusional model assuming negligible external mass transfer resistance were evaluated. The drying rate curves of sucuk samples were also simulated taking into account the influence of the external mass transfer resistance. The equation was solved using the trial-and-error solution algorithm developed in this study and the mass transfer coefficient, k c , and effective moisture diffusivity, D eff , were simultaneously determined (1.44 × 10?8 to 1.93 × 10?8 m/s and 4.30 × 10?10 to 6.85 × 10?10 m2/s, respectively). The proposed model considering the effect of external resistance allowed the accurate simulation of the experimental drying data of sucuks at different temperatures.  相似文献

Separation and purification of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylinositol (PI) fractions to their utmost purity is still a challenging task industrially due to the molecular and structural complexity of lecithin molecules. The present study deals with the filtration of the PI-rich fraction followed by drying of the cake for its further purification and value addition. Filtration of the PI-rich fraction was carried out under constant pressure conditions followed by the drying of the cake in a vacuum tray dryer. The average specific cake resistance (αav) as a function of operating pressure was studied and it showed little variation with respect to the applied pressure differential. The initial solvent content in the cake after filtration was found to be in the vicinity of 1 kg solvent/kg dry solid, which was then subsequently reduced in the drying stage to 0.04 kg solvent/kg dry solid. The drying kinetics of the cake was studied at different drying temperatures in a vacuum tray dryer operated under varying degree of vacuum. The drying rate curve showed a prominent falling rate period with the effective solvent diffusivity in the range of 5.4 × 10?10 m2s?1 to 1.42 × 10?9 m2s?1within the temperature range of 40–60°C. Critical analysis of the dried PI fraction was carried out in terms of phosphatidylinositol content and color. The drying data were analyzed using various models and Das et al.'s model, the modified Henderson and Pabis model, and the Page model were found to provide the best fit sin terms of root mean square error (RMSE), chi square, and correlation coefficient (R 2).  相似文献

Convective drying of wastewater sludges and sawdust/sludge mixtures was studied. The first part of this work was an experimental study performed in a cross-flow convective dryer using 500 g of wet material extruded through a disk with circular dies of 12 mm. The results showed that the sawdust addition has a positive impact on the drying process from a mass ratio of 2/8, on a dry basis, with observed drying rates higher than the original sludge. The second part of this work consisted of developing a drying model in order to identify the internal diffusion coefficient and convective mass transfer coefficient from the experimental data. A comparison was made between fitted drying curves, well represented by the Newton's model, and the analytical solutions of the diffusion equation applied to a finite cylinder. Variations of dimensional characteristics, such as the volume and exchange surface of the sample bed, were obtained by X-ray tomography. This technique allowed us to confirm that shrinkage, which is an important phenomenon occurring during sludge and sawdust/sludge mixture drying, must be taken into account. The results showed that both the internal diffusion coefficient and convective mass transfer coefficient were affected by mixing and sawdust addition. The internal diffusion coefficient changed from 7.77 × 10?9 m2/s for the original sludge to 7.01 × 10?9 m2/s for the mixed sludge and then increased to 8.35 × 10?9 m2/s for the mixture of a mass ratio of 4/6. The convective mass transfer coefficient changed from 9.70 × 10?8 m/s for the original sludge to 8.67 × 10?8 m/s for the mixed sludge and then increased to 12.09 × 10?8 m/s for the mixture of a mass ratio of 4/6. These results confirmed that sawdust addition was beneficial to the sludge drying process as the mass transfer efficiency between the air and material increased. Reinforcing the texture of sludge by adding sawdust can increase the drying rate and decrease the drying time, and then the heat energy supply will be reduced significantly. The study also showed that neglecting shrinkage phenomenon resulted in an overestimation for the internal diffusion coefficient for the convective drying of sludges and sawdust/sludge mixtures.  相似文献

One- (70°C) and two-temperature regimes (70 and 50°C) were used to dry chilli (Capsicum annuum cv. Huarou Yon) using a laboratory tray dryer compared to conventional sun drying. A pretreatment was done by soaking chilli in antibrowning solutions before drying. It was found that the drying rate of chilli soaked in chemical solutions was increased and the drying period of chilli was decreased. Page's model was found to fit well with the experiment for one- and two-temperature drying using least squares analysis. The highest value of the coefficient of determination (R2 > 0.99), the lowest value of standard error of estimation (SEE < 0.00031), and the lowest value of the mean relative deviation (P < 10%) were obtained. The effective moisture diffusivities of chilli drying at 70°C and two-stage drying were between 6.01–7.22 × 10?10 m2/s and 3.16–3.89 × 10?10 m2/s, respectively. In contrast, the lowest value of effective moisture diffusivity of chilli was obtained by the conventional sun-drying method (0.597 × 10?10 m2/s). The highest value of moisture diffusivity was observed for chilli soaked in sodium metabisulfite (NaMS) mixed with CaCl2 solution for both one- and two-temperature regimes. The color of chilli was improved by using chemical pretreatments, in particular, chilli soaked in NaMS mixed with CaCl2 solution.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of meat fiber directions and air conditions on moisture and temperature developments, shrinkage, and effective diffusivity constants compared to homogenous minced meat samples. The lean meat with three fiber directions and minced meat samples were dried at temperatures of 48 and 70°C and air flow rates of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.7 m/s. The minced meat samples showed 1.0 ± 0.19 to 4.4 ± 0.03°C higher temperature values and 2.3 ± 0.004 to 6.2 ± 0.003% lower moisture losses than the lean meat samples in all fiber directions. The lowest temperatures were observed in lean meat with h 1 (normal flow, normal drying) fiber direction. The highest moisture loss and diffusion coefficient were observed in lean meat with h 2 (parallel flow, normal drying) and v (normal flow, parallel drying) fiber directions, which also possessed the shortest drying times (10.4 and 13.4 h, respectively). The estimated diffusion coefficient values ranged between 1.11 × 10?9 and 5.54 × 10?9. The results indicated that lean and minced meat samples differed in their drying behaviors in a tray dryer under the tested conditions with >90% reproducibility (or ≤10% coefficient of variation).  相似文献
