A nonequilibrium distributed parameter model for rotary drying and cooling processes described by a set of partial differitial equations with nonlinear algebraic constraints is developed in this work. These equations arise from the multi-phase heat and mass balances on a typical rotary dryer. A computational algorithm is devekped by employing a polynonial approximation ( orthogonal collocation) with a glotal splinc technique leading to a differential-algebraic equation ( DAE) system. The numerical solution is carried out by using a standard DAE solver.

The two- phase-flow heat transfer coelficient is computed by introducing a correction factor to the commonly accepted correlations. Since interaction between the falling particles are considered in the correction factor,the results are more reliable than those computed by assuming that heat transfer between a single falling particle and the drying air is unaffected by other particles. The heat transfer computations can be further justified via a study on the analogies between heat and mass transfer.

The general model devloped in this work is mathematically more ritorous yet more flexible that the lumped parameter models established by one of the authors (Douglas et al., (1993)). The three major assumptions of an equilibrium operation, perfect mixing and constant drying raic, are removed in the distributed parameter model.

The simulation results are compared with the operational data from an industrial sugar dryer and predictions from earlier models. The model and algorithm successfully predict the steady state behaviour of rotary dryers and collers. The generalized model can be applied to fertilizer drying processes in which the assumption of constant drying rate is no longer valid and the existing dynamic models are not applicable.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

An overall system model for a countercurrent rotary dryer has been developed with the ullimale aim of assessing controller pairings in these dryers. This model is based on heat and mass balances within dryer regions combined with two subsidiary models, one describing the equipment (which determines particle transport and heat transfer)and the other describing the behaviour of the material (the drying kinetics). Six partial differential equations have been set up to evaluate six state variables: solids moisture content, solids temperature, gas humidity, gas temperature, solids holdup and gas holdup as functions of time and rotary dryer length. A control-volume method has been used to reduce the six partial differential equations with respect to time and the length of the rotary dryer to six ordinary differential equations in time.

The drying model has been implemented in the SPEEDUP flowsheeting package (with FORTRAN subroutines) The model has been validated by fifteen experiments-in a pilot scale countercurrent-flow rotary dryer (0.2m in diameter and 2m in length)  相似文献

ABSTRACT

An investigation of the thermal drying of lignite has been carried out, by using an indirect heat pilot rotary drum. The process aims at the production of dry lignite and clean steam as part of a gasification procedure. Both flighted and bare drum modes have been employed. Temperature profiles along the dryer length, the amount of evaporation (moisture conversion) and the solids residence time distribution (RTD) were measured. A non-isothermal model was tested under three different regimes of solids flow. Model integration, by taking account of experimental amount of evaporation at dryer exit and temperature profiles along the dryer length, has been utilized in the validation of drying kinetics and heat transfer correlations. Model predictions compare satisfactorily with the operating data of an indirect heat industrial lignite dryer. Overall heat transfer coefficients of the pilot rotary dryer were found to agree well with those reported for direct heat dryers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

When regarding the atmospheric contact drying of granular beds wetted with a liquid mixture, both the drying rate and the selectivity of the process, i.e. the change of moisture composition, are of interest. The batch drying of a free flowing ceramic substance, wetted with a 2-propanol-water mixture, is investigated in a rotary dryer with heated wall and air flow.

The theoretical analysis is based on physical models for heat and mass transfer, moisture migration and particle transport, which are presented in examples.

The experimental and theoretical results show that higher selectivities can be achieved by reducing the particle size because of the lower liquid-phase mass-transfer resistance. An increase of the rotational speed leads to a higher drying rate with slightly decreased selectivity if the particles are sufficiently small, since contact heat transfer is enhanced.  相似文献

A model for a pneumatic conveying dryer is presented. Although the main emphasis is put on superheated steam drying of wood chips, it can be used for other porous materials as well

The model includes a comprehensive two-dimensional model for the drying of single wood chips which accounts for the main physical mechanisms occurring in wood during drying. The external drying conditions in a pneumatic conveying dryer were calculated by applying the mass, heat and momentum equations for each incremental step in dryer length. A plug flow assumption was made for the dryer model and the single particle and dryer models were solved in an iterative manner. The non-spherical nature of wood chips were accounted for by measuring the drag and heat transfer coefficients

Model calculations illustrate the complex interactions between steam, particles and walls which occur in a flash dryer. The drying rate varies in a very complex manner through the dryer. The internal resistance to mass transfer becomes very important in The drying of less permeable wood species such as spruce. Two effects were observed as the particle size was increased: firstly the heat transfer rate decreased, and secondly the residence time increased. To some extent, these effects compensate for each other, however, the net result is that larger chips have a higher final moisture content.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This work presents methods for synthesizing drying process models for particulate solids that combine prior knowledge with artificial neural networks. The inclusion of prior knowledge is investigated by developing two applications with the data from two indirect rotary steam dryers. The first application consisted in the modelling of the drying process of soya meal in a batch indirect rotary dryer, The external and internal mass transfer resistances were associated in the hidden layer of the network to linear and sigmoidal nodes, respectively. The second application consisted in the modelling of the drying process of soya meal in a continuos indirect rotary dryer. The model was constructed using the Semi-parametric Design Approach. The model predicts the evolution of solid moisture content and temperature as a function of the solid position in the dryer. The results show that the hybrid model performs better than the pure “ black box” neural network and default models. They also shows that prior knowledge enhances the extrapolation capabilities of a neural network model,  相似文献

Abstract

The heat and mass transfer models applicable to biological products at each element in a far-infrared fixed-bed dryer were established. The model was validated by comparing the simulation results with experimental data of black mushrooms (Lentinus edodes) in terms of moisture content and drying rate. The very good agreement suggests that the models for heat transfer and drying rate of biological products in the far-infrared fixed-dryer can be obtained by establishing the equations of radiation and dehydration in interspace elements. An unevenness of change in moisture content and drying rate on the same horizontal layer in the dryer was found. Thus it is necessary to take some measures to solve this nonuniformity in drying if the proposed dryer is employed.  相似文献

Closed-loop drying systems are an attractive alternative to conventional drying systems because they provide a wide range of potential advantages. Consequently, type of drying process is attracting increased interest. Rotary drying of wood particles can be assumed as an incorporated process involving fluid–solid interactions and simultaneous heat and mass transfer within and between the particles. Understanding these mechanisms during rotary drying processes may result in determination of the optimum drying parameters and improved dryer design. In this study, due to the complexity and nonlinearity of the momentum, heat, and mass transfer equations, a computerized mathematical model of a closed-loop triple-pass concurrent rotary dryer was developed to simulate the drying behavior of poplar wood particles within the dryer drums. Wood particle moisture content and temperature, drying air temperature, and drying air humidity ratio along the drums lengths can be simulated using this model. The model presented in this work has been shown to successfully predict the steady-state behavior of a concurrent rotary dryer and can be used to analyze the effects of various drying process parameters on the performance of the closed-loop triple-pass rotary dryer to determine the optimum drying parameters. The model was also used to simulate the performance of industrial closed-loop rotary dryers under various operating conditions.  相似文献

A mathematical model able to predict solid and drying gas temperature and moisture content axial profiles along a direct contact rotary dryer was developed. The study was focused on the drying kinetics based on phenomenological models. Two different drying mechanisms in the decreasing drying rate period were tested: proponional to the unbound moisture content and moisture diffusion inside the particle. ABSTRACT

Fluidized bed dryers are often used to extract water from granular materials. When the drying process is mainly limited by the resistance against water transport inside the particle the drying behaviour is said to be diffusion-limited. In the literature there are several models that predict this drying process with very diverging results. In this study a model is set up to arrive at a better prediction for this drying process. The heat and mass transfer in the granular material and the drying air is described. The resulting equations are solved numerically. The model must be extended to incorporate the heat capacity of the dryer.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the present study drying of fine crystalline solid was carried out in a non-insulated jacketed screw conveyor dryer SCD of 3 m length and 0.072 m screw diameter. It is nitrogen-swept to carry off the evaporated moisture. Dryer performance was evaluated in terms of the final moisture content, heat-transfer coefficient, thermal efficiency and power consumption. From the experimental results it was observed that drying under low pressure gives 92% moisture removal compared to 30–40% using low flow rates of nitrogen. The initial moisture content was in the range of 5 to 6%. Over the parameter range studied, the overall heat transfer coefficient was found to be in the range of 46–102 W/m2K. The average rise in the temperature of the product was 40 to 50°C. Thermal efficiency (based on sensible and latent heat) of the dryer obtained was found to be in the range of 25–62%, typical values obtained in falling rate drying period. Power consumption per metric ton of dried material was found to be a strong function of screw speed and material feed rate, material properties, and drive efficiency.  相似文献

In contrast to the conventional rate-based models using empirical transfer coefficients, the heat and mass transfer rates are estimated by using on-line measurements in the new model. Furthermore, a set of improved sectional solid transport equations with localized parameters is developed in this work to replace the global correlation for the computation of solid retention time. Since a number of key model variables and parameters are identified on-line using measurement data, the model is able to closely track the dynamic behaviour of rotary drying processes within a broad range of operational conditions. This adaptive model is validated against experimental data obtained from a pilot-scale rotary sugar dryer. ABSTRACT

In the production of MDF, wet resinated fibre must be dried to its target moisture content, normally 9 to 11%, before compaction into a board by hot pressing. Fibre drying can be interpreted as an incorporated process involving gas-solid two phase-flow, inter-component transfer, and heat and mass transfer within the fibre. Based on these mechanisms, a mathematical model has been developed to simulate the MDF fibre drying process. From the model, fibre moisture content, air temperature and air humidity along the dryer length can be predicted and factors affecting the drying rate examined. The model can be employed to optimise drying conditions and to evaluate improvements in dryer design. A case study of drying improvement in reduction of dryer emissions and heat consumption is given to demonstrate the potential application of the developed dryer model.  相似文献

A fluid bed dryer simulator was developed under Excel 5 wlth Visual Basic for Applications environment The simulator iS based on a mathematical model describing heat and mass transfer in the dryer. The total model incorporates empirical models for the Drying Constant and the Residence Time. These empirical models are crucial in the total model efficiency. Thus a procedure for updating the parameters of the empirical models is provided. This procedure constitutes the ‘learnhg’ property of the simulator. Two databases are Supplied. The first contains laboratory drying data and it is used for tuning the Drying Constant empirical model. The second contains industrial drying data from the real operation of the dryer, and it is used for tuning the Residence Time empirical model. The experience from the industrial application of the simulator proved that the simulator is a powerful tool for flexible operation of an industrial dryer. This paper is presents the total mathematical model of the dryer, the learning concept, and the databases, including useful information concerning the drying kinetics of bentonite. A simulator outline is presented and typical capabilities and uses are briefly described. A case study for flexible operation of an industrial dryer is discussed.  相似文献

We present a dryer model for simulating the drying of hygroscopic-porous food products in a tunnel dryer. The model employs an improved receding-front formulation by taking into consideration the material volumetric shrinkage and the variation of the heat and mass transfer coefficient during drying. Predicted results show close agreement when compared with experimental data. We report a parametric analysis using the dryer model to study the drying transient and the need to cascade the drying process so as to maximise the drying potential of the air stream.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The solid particle movement in a rotary drum plays an important role in drying processes. The solid distribution in the drum affects the amount of contact surface between the solid and the gas. The retention time of solids influences the time particles can stay in contact with the gas in order to transfer heat and mass. Any heat and mass transfer model for a solid particle dryer must be able to predict solid flowrate and solid hold-up. There have been several reports in the literature regarding the modelling aspects of solid transport in dryers. If the model is developed for model-based control, it must be simple and yet represent dynamics of the system accurately. This paper addresses solid motion modelling and the effects of different variables involved in solid transport phenomena. Sugar drying process is the case study in this work. A steady state semi-empirical model was modified to predict solid hold-up and flowrate in rotary dryers. This model was incorporated into a heat and mass transfer model ;o predict solid moisture and temperature for inferential and model-based control purposes. Results of several experiments that have been used to investigate dynamics of the system in terms of solid motion and to validate the model are also presented. The approach advocated in this paper is directly applicable to the transport of other solids in rotary drum equipment and can thus be regarded as a generalized model.  相似文献

Abstract

The items to be considered prior to selection of dryers are explained, and a simple method for a rough estimation of dryer sizes was proposed based on data obtained from operating industrial dryers.

The equations of basic design for batch or continuous type dryers were derived. The heat was supplied to materials by convection and/or conduction. The equations were simplified to the case when the falling rate of drying is proportional to the moisture content of materials under the constant drying conditions. The heat transfer coefficient used in the equations can be determined based on the calculations or the data obtained from the experimental or industrial dryers. The equations are useful for estimating the scale-up effect of dryers.  相似文献

Abstract

Some results of our fundamental research on drying processes are summed up in this article. It consists of three parts: (1) Multistage fluidized bed drying, including particle flowing characteristics, heat and mass transfer between particles and drying medium, drying characteristics of drying materials; (2) Impinging stream drying, the flowing and drying characteristics of a vertical impinging stream dryer, one-stage and multistage semi-circular impinging stream dryer and combined vertical and semi-circular impinging stream dryer are discussed; (3) The effects of rapid transient heat and mass transfer on drying processes, such as time and space scales for nonFourier or nonFickian and influence of extreme heat and mass transfer are also discussed.  相似文献
