Abstract

The various methods of self-sensing and self-healing developed within the Composite Systems Innovation Centre, University of Sheffield, are reviewed. Damage sensing using electrical resistance in carbon fibre reinforced composite or using the fibres as optical sensing elements in glass fibre reinforced composite is demonstrated. Amelioration of low level damage is demonstrated in both monolithic composite materials and sandwich structures using direct chemical reactions within the matrix without the use of encapsulants. These reactions can be activated by resistive heating of the material itself. The use of a combination of these techniques could create a truly smart structure able to both sense and repair damage and degradation.  相似文献

以不饱和聚酯为基体,以玻璃纤维毡为增强材料,加入促进剂、固化剂等添加剂,通过常温固化得到其板材,然后对其拉伸强度、冲击强度等性能进行测试,研究各种成分不同配比对材料力学性能的影响。结果表明以无碱玻璃纤维毡为增强材料,不饱和聚酯和玻璃纤维毡的质量比为3︰1,促进剂、固化剂的加入量为树脂量的0.5%、1%,制得的样品力学性能最好,拉伸强度达到80 MPa以上,冲击强度达到40 kJ/㎡以上。  相似文献

Abrasive jet machining is widely used for machining composites. Glass fibre composites find extensive use in aerospace industries, automobile sectors, medical fields and marine applications. Their usage in automated engineering industry needs a good surface finish. Glass fibre reinforced polymer composites are difficult to machine with conventional machining techniques. Hence, in this paper, abrasive jet machining of glass fibre reinforced polymer laminates was experimentally investigated for the various parameters in terms of average surface roughness (Ra). This work deals with making of holes on glass fiber reinforced polymer composite material using a newly designed nozzle with and without internal thread. The effect of jet pressure (P), stand-off distance (L), nozzle diameter (D), and abrasive size (S) on surface roughness (Ra) for two different nozzles was examined. The experimental result showed good surface finish on GFRP materials with the use of newly designed nozzle with an internal thread.  相似文献

Abstract

Hemp fibre mat reinforced unsaturated polyester composites were fabricated using a conventional sheet moulding compound process. The influence of fibre and CaCO3 filler content on strength and stiffness of these hemp fibre reinforced sheet moulding compounds is reported and compared with data for chopped glass fibre reinforced sheet moulding compounds. In addition the influence of alkaline and silane treatments of the hemp fibres is evaluated. The experimental data are compared to modified versions of the Cox–Krenchel and Kelly–Tyson models, supplemented with parameters of composite porosity to improve the prediction of composite tensile properties. A good agreement was found between the modified models and experimental data for strength and stiffness. The results indicate that hemp fibre reinforced sheet moulding compounds are of interest for low cost engineering applications that require high stiffness to weight ratios.  相似文献

Abstract

Low cost ceramic dough moulding compounds/composites (CDMC) are composed of inorganic metal silicates and chopped fibre reinforcements. This paper investigates the fire reactions of these materials under severe thermal and heat conditions. This research is targeted to potential applications in the replacement of glass fibre reinforced polymeric insulation materials such as phenolic composites as engine heat shields which experience high temperature and heat transmission. The materials developed can provide good properties, including heat insulation with high thermal stability for engine drafts, where traditional glass/phenolic composites were used and gave a very short life cycle. This work compares the thermal properties of the glass fibre reinforced phenolic composites and metal silicate composites produced under the same processing conditions. The results show that CDMC possesses significantly better thermal stability and heat resistance in comparison with phenolic moulding composite (phenolic dough moulding composites). The indication was that under the testing condition of heat flux of 75?kW?m?2 intended for materials used for applications in marine, transport and possibly nuclear waste immobilisation, the integration of the CDMC was kept intact and survived as a high temperature insulation material.  相似文献

Abstract

The present study outlines a methodology for microstructural characterisation of fibre reinforced composites containing circular fibres. Digital micrographs of polished cross-sections are used as input to a numerical image processing tool that determines spatial mapping and radii detection of the fibres. The information is used for different analyses to investigate and characterise the fibre architecture. As an example, the methodology is applied to glass fibre reinforced composites with varying fibre contents. The different fibre volume fractions (FVFs) affect the number of contact points per fibre, the communal fibre distance and the local FVF. The fibre diameter distribution and packing pattern remain somewhat similar for the considered materials. The methodology is a step towards a better understanding of the composite microstructure and can be used to evaluate the interconnection between fibre architecture and composite properties.  相似文献

通过马来酸酐接枝高密度聚乙烯(PE-HD-g-MAH)熔融共混改性尼龙612(PA612),研究了玻纤增强改性后的PA612复合材料。结果发现,随着PE-HD-g-MAH含量增加,PA612的结晶温度逐渐下降。通过肉眼和光泽仪研究PE-HD-g-MAH对玻纤增强PA612表观的影响,结果发现随着接枝物的引入,相同条件下复合材料注塑后的样件浮纤更少,光泽度更高。尤其在低模温的条件下,这种差异更加明显。加入PE-HD-g-MAH共混改性后的玻纤增强PA612的复合材料对模温的要求更低,表观更好,改善了其成型性。同时,PE-HD-g-MAH的引入使拉伸强度有小幅度的下降(6%),同时可以提高其缺口冲击强度(18%),对PA612有一定的增韧效果。最后,研究了共混改性后对复合材料的吸水性及尺寸稳定性的影响。PE-HD-g-MAH可以有效降低PA612的吸水性,提高PA612复合材料制件的尺寸稳定性。  相似文献

利用小跨度变曲的方法研究了玻璃纤维增强PP复合材料的层间剪切强度(ILSS)。进行了偶联剂的评选,考察了偶联剂和接核物PP-g-MAH用量对层间剪切强度的影响。试验表明,玻璃纤维经偶联剂处理后,提高了与PP的层间剪切强度,PP-g-MAH在玻璃纤维与PP之间起到了较好的增容作用,研究了接技物PP—g—MAH的增容效果。  相似文献

The effectiveness of distinct fillers, from micro to nano‐size scaled, on the fire behaviour of an epoxy resin and its carbon fibre reinforced composites was assessed by cone calorimetry. The performance was compared not only regarding the reaction to fire performance, but also in terms of thermal stability, glass transition temperature and microstructure. Regarding the fire reaction behaviour of nanofilled epoxy resin, anionic nanoclays and thermally oxidized carbon nanotubes showed the best results, in agreement with more compact chars formed on the surface of the burning polymer. For carbon fibre reinforced composite plates, the cone calorimeter results of modified resin samples did not show significant improvements on the heat release rate curves. Poorly dispersed fillers in the resin additionally caused reductions on the glass transition temperature of the composite materials. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The structural performance of polymer composites reinforced with plant fibres when exposed to fire was experimentally evaluated and compared against an E‐glass fibre laminate. Fire testing under combined one‐sided radiant heating and static tensile loading revealed that flax, jute, or hemp fibre composites experience more rapid thermal softening and fail within much shorter times than the fibreglass laminate, which is indicative of vastly inferior structural performance in fire. The plant fibre composites soften and fail before the onset of thermal decomposition of the plant fibres and polymer matrix, whereas the E‐glass fibres provide the composite with superior tensile properties to higher temperatures and higher applied tensile stresses. The tensile performance of the three types of plant fibre composites in fire was not identical. When exposed to the same radiant heat flux, the flax fibre composite could withstand higher tensile stresses for longer times than the hemp and jute laminates, which showed similar performance.  相似文献

制备了连续玄武岩纤维平纹布(CBFTC)增强S-157酚醛树脂复合材料。研究了树脂含量对S-157酚醛树脂/CBFTC复合材料力学性能和烧蚀性能的影响,并借助扫描电子显微镜对复合材料断面的微观形貌进行了分析,同时将S-157酚醛树脂/CBFTC复合材料与S-157酚醛树脂/高强玻璃纤维平纹布(GFTC)复合材料进行了性能对比。结果表明,树脂含量在30%时S-157酚醛树脂/CBFTC复合材料的力学性能和烧蚀性能最佳;S-157酚醛树脂/CBFTC复合材料比S-157酚醛树脂/GFTC复合材料具有更好的力学性能和烧蚀性能。  相似文献
