Major construction projects are characterized by a heterogeneous audience of stakeholders who can create severe reputational risk to project organizations when not properly addressed. The inclusion and support that project organizations devote to local communities form a crucial part of a project's delivery and social sustainability considerations, yet this has only recently attracted attention in project studies. To address social sustainability, project managers should reinforce accountability and the inclusion of ‘new voices’ in the project decision-making process. Through mixed-methods research, this paper contributes to the project stakeholder engagement discourse and normative stance of stakeholder theory concerning the role of local communities and examines the ways in which inclusion can provide a response to the sustainability challenges of major projects. Findings suggest means-ends decoupling situations where current project management practices towards communities' engagement are weakly linked to their goals and induced by convergent pressures and reactive mechanisms, thus preventing an inclusive decision-making process.  相似文献

The water quality of the River Frome, Dorset, southern England, was monitored at weekly intervals from 1965 until 2009. Determinands included phosphorus, nitrogen, silicon, potassium, calcium, sodium, magnesium, pH, alkalinity and temperature. Nitrate-N concentrations increased from an annual average of 2.4 mg l− 1 in the mid to late 1960s to 6.0 mg l− 1 in 2008-2009, but the rate of increase was beginning to slow. Annual soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations increased from 101 μg l− 1 in the mid 1960s to a maximum of 190 μg l− 1 in 1989. In 2002, there was a step reduction in SRP concentration (average = 88 μg l− 1 in 2002-2005), with further improvement in 2007-2009 (average = 49 μg l− 1), due to the introduction of phosphorus stripping at sewage treatment works. Phosphorus and nitrate concentrations showed clear annual cycles, related to the timing of inputs from the catchment, and within-stream bioaccumulation and release. Annual depressions in silicon concentration each spring (due to diatom proliferation) reached a maximum between 1980 and 1991, (the period of maximum SRP concentration) indicating that algal biomass had increased within the river. The timing of these silicon depressions was closely related to temperature. Excess carbon dioxide partial pressures (EpCO2) of 60 times atmospheric CO2 were also observed through the winter periods from 1980 to 1992, when phosphorus concentration was greatest, indicating very high respiration rates due to microbial decomposition of this enhanced biomass. Declining phosphorus concentrations since 2002 reduced productivity and algal biomass in the summer, and EpCO2 through the winter, indicating that sewage treatment improvements had improved riverine ecology. Algal blooms were limited by phosphorus, rather than silicon concentration. The value of long-term water quality data sets is discussed. We study empirically the effects of five different dimensions of agglomeration – specialization, diversity, related variety, unrelated variety, and city size – on the survival chances of new entrepreneurial firms in China. Consideration is further given to studying the mediating effects of local subsidies on new firm survival given different existing local industrial structures in those regions. In support of the ‘regional branching’ hypothesis, we find that increasing local related variety has a stronger positive effect on new firm survival than other types of agglomeration. We also find that receiving comparatively fewer subsidies motivates firms to seek out and benefit from local existing economies, which in turn, positively influence their chances of survival. By contrast, agglomerated firms that receive relatively more subsidies tend to be more likely to face financial distress leading to eventual market exit. The findings thus reveal that both the intensity and the location of state support matters in terms of optimizing positive agglomeration effects on firms' post‐entry performance and survival.  相似文献

Forest burning for pastures in tropical areas represents an important component of biogeochemical cycles. In order to provide information concerning chemical modifications after forest burning, in this local study the total contents of 29 elements in topsoils were analyzed when forest is changed to pasture land. The work was carried out in 1999 in Rond?nia state (Brazilian Amazon Basin) focussing on a native forest site and four neighboring pastures established in 1987, 1983, 1972 and 1911 after forest conversion. Chemical fingerprint graphs of the pasture soils related to the forest soil illustrated mainly higher contents for the vast majority of macro- and micro nutrients, but for other elements as well (e.g. Ba, Sr, Cr, Ni, V or Pb). Also increases of pH levels were measured in all pastures, which remained higher than the forest values for decades. After initial increases of most of the elements in pasture of 1987 the decreases of some macro elements (e.g. C, N, K, Mg, S) in pasture 1983 as well as again the enhanced levels in pasture 1972 and 1911 suggest both a persistent leaching of these elements and a function of pasture age where external element inputs exceed outputs. Ash deposition, accumulation of organic matter, animal excreta as well as natural soil conditions are discussed as influencing factors on the element contents of the original forest and the pasture soils. Nevertheless, in this particular area continuous pasturing after forest clearing primarily enriched the soils in elements.  相似文献
