The spatial distribution of PCBs in southern Lake Michigan sediments was obtained from the analysis of 66 box cores and 8 grab samples. PCB concentrations in surficial sediments were closely related to sedimentation zone and to the oxidizable organic matter content of the sediments. Average surficial sediment concentrations ranged from 81 ng/g in depositional zones to 7.2 ng/g in non-depositional zones. The vertical distribution of PCBs was determined at several sites and was used to estimate the areal burden and flux of PCBs in each of the southern sedimentation zones. The total sediment PCB burden in the southern portion of the lake was estimated to be 5,900 kg. Southern Lake Michigan has received PCBs since approximately 1930 at an average flux of 7.1 μg/m2 yr.The effect of Waukegan Harbor as a point source of PCBs to Lake Michigan was evaluated by comparing the PCB distribution and Aroclor composition of harbor sediments to those of sediments of decreasing distances from the harbor. Significant differences in total PCB concentration between non-depositional zones near the harbor and those in other areas of the basin indicate that Waukegan Harbor has influenced the PCB burden of Lake Michigan.  相似文献

Spatiotemporal trends for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were examined in surface and suspended sediments collected between 1994 and 2018 from over twenty nearshore stations on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. In 2018, PCB concentrations ranged over an order-of-magnitude in surface (<10 ng/g?357 ng/g) and suspended sediments (<10 ng/g–330 ng/g), illustrating the presence of legacy hotspots as well as diffuse urban inputs. PCB concentrations in both surface and suspended sediments were consistently highest in Hamilton Harbour, but were also elevated at other stations around the perimeter of the Niagara basin as well as near Trenton and Kingston, Ontario. Generally, higher PCB concentrations were found in surface sediment relative to paired suspended sediment samples suggesting temporal improvements in nearshore sediment quality. However, many stations demonstrated temporal variability in PCB concentrations, a likely factor in the lack of an overall nearshore declining trend. Given that PCBs are listed as a consumption-limiting contaminant for all fish sampling blocks in the Canadian waters of Lake Ontario and are responsible for 78% of restricted advisories, sediment quality benchmarks that account for bioaccumulation potential should be considered over toxicologically-derived guidelines to gauge severity of PCB contamination of nearshore sediments. Relatively higher TOC-normalized PCB concentrations in the western end of Lake Ontario suggests additional research on PCB bioavailability from nearshore sediment would be beneficial in understanding basinwide trends of PCBs in fish, and that an adaptive approach to sediment management may be needed in the context of consumption advisories.  相似文献

Diffuse pollution from urban stormwater and agricultural runoff are among the leading causes of water pollution in the USA. A process-oriented, stakeholder-driven research approach was implemented in the small heterogeneous watershed of St. Albans Bay, Vermont to model the relative load of phosphorus from all sources, including diffuse transport pathways, and compared to goals and assumptions outlined by a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) developed for phosphorus in Lake Champlain. Mass-balance and dynamic landscape simulation models were used to describe the distribution of the average annual phosphorus load to streams (10.57 t/year) in terms of space, time, and transport process. The majority of the phosphorus load comes from two subwatersheds dominated by clay soils, Stevens and Jewett Brooks. Dissolved phosphorus in surface runoff from the agricultural landscape, driven by high soil phosphorus concentrations, accounts for 41% of the total load to watershed streams. Direct discharge from farmsteads and stormwater loads, primarily from road sand wash-off, are also significant sources. Results reported in this study could help target watershed interventions both in terms of the types and locations of recommended best management practices (BMPs). The study offers an approach to attaining TMDL diffuse pollution targets in a cost-effective and participatory manner and could be replicated for other TMDL processes around the country.  相似文献

During the last years, climate changes and urbanization are causing huge urban pluvial flood events in many countries in the world, driving to both develop and apply effective and innovative approaches for the design and management of urban stormwater systems. The gradual urbanization is provoking the increase of impervious surfaces and, consequently, of surface runoff and velocity and the reduction of concentration times of watersheds, both increasing soil erosion and worsening the water quality as a consequence of the intensive contamination. In this field, Low Impact Development (LID) practices for urban runoff control can be intended as an effective approach to both improve the urban resilience against the flooding risk and assure environmental interventions to adequate the urban stormwater systems to both climate and land use changes. In this paper, a Decision Support System (DSS) for the optimal design of LIDs in urban watershed is presented and discussed. The procedure is tested on Fuorigrotta (IT) and Ponticelli (IT) urban watersheds, with the aim of assessing the effectiveness of LIDs application in reducing both the flooded and conveyed volumes, at the expense of cost-effective solutions.  相似文献

It is considered that refractory dissolved organic substances have caused an increase in the COD concentration in Lake Biwa in recent years. We investigated the organic matter in the first flush of stormwater runoff from a road in the watershed area of the lake, and studied the possibility of improvement in the water environment from that aspect. After percolating the stormwater through soil, we analyzed organic substances fractionated by using GPC-TC. And we examined the effect of removal of organic substances by comparing the peak height before and after percolation. In the result of the experiments, we found that soil infiltration reduced the refractory dissolved organic substance and we successfully designed a system for a simple and easy experimental facility to treat urban runoff.  相似文献

Three sediment cores from Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and Indiana Harbor Ship Canal were collected, segmented and analyzed for Aroclor and non-Aroclor polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCBs). PCBs associated with the commercially produced Aroclor mixtures 1248 and 1254 dominate the sediment signal and the sum of all congeners (∑ PCB) peaks in concentration and accumulation around 1970 in the Great Lakes. This trend is very similar to Aroclor production history. In the Indiana Harbor Ship Canal, PCBs appear around 1935 and remain at very high levels between 1940 and 1980, probably reflecting the history of use at the nearby steel mill. In contrast, the non-Aroclor PCBs in the Lake Ontario and IHSC sediment cores, including PCB11 and heavily chlorinated congeners PCB206, 207, 208 and 209 reach a peak in the 1950s, decline and peak again in the 1970s or in the early 1980s. All five congeners have been previously measured in commercial paint pigment. PCB11 was found to peak about 5 years later than ∑ PCBs, and is probably associated with the production or use history of diarylide yellow pigments. The temporal distribution profiles of these non-Aroclor PCBs are well correlated with the production history of paint pigments and dyes. Although it is well known that the production of Aroclor PCBs is preserved in Great Lakes sediments, this study is the first to show that production of non-Aroclors are also preserved in the sediments as a record of long term trends in environmental exposure.  相似文献

Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and PCBs in zebra mussels were elevated to concentrations greater than 5,000 ng/g lipid and 15,000 ng/g lipid, respectively, at the Ambassador Bridge in the Detroit River and concentrations gradually declined at downstream locations, which included three stations in the western basin of Lake Erie (Middle Sister Island, East Sister Island, Pelee Island). PCB concentrations in zebra mussels collected at the stations in western Lake Erie were elevated relative to the concentrations in mussels at the upstream end of the Detroit River (Stoney Point). There is no evidence that PAH contamination in the Detroit River elevated PAH concentrations in zebra mussels in western Lake Erie relative to mussels at Stoney Point. Fluorescent aromatic compounds (FACs) representing metabolites of PAHs were analyzed in the bile of gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) and freshwater drum (Aplodinotus grunniens) collected from several sites in the Detroit River and western Lake Erie. Mean FAC concentrations were >l,000 ng BaP equivalents per mL of bile in fish from the Trenton Channel and Boblo Island in the Detroit River, but FAC data provided no evidence that fish captured at two sites in western Lake Erie (East Sister Island, Pelee Island) were exposed to elevated concentrations of PAHs through ingestion of contaminated biota or exposure to contaminated sediments.  相似文献

The analysis of both the mineralogical and geochemical composition and the stratigraphy of Holocene sediments of Lake Onego provided a novel interpretation of their genesis. Their mineral composition suggests that Holocene bottom sediments generally inherit the composition of terrigenous material that enters the lake with river runoff. The predominant authigenic minerals include biogenic opal from diatom skeletons, Fe-illite, and Fe-chlorite, which are the main iron mineral forms in bottom sediments of Lake Onego. Unstable suspension components (illite and chlorite) transform into their ferruginous varieties under humid climate conditions and high concentrations of iron and silicon in the lake waters. Both the presence of ferromanganese nodules in the uppermost part of bottom sediments of Lake Onego and their formation result from the location of the lake in the northern humid zone, geological composition of Fennoscandian crystalline rocks on the Lake Onego watershed, and the presence of an oxidative geochemical barrier into the lake sediment sequence. Late Holocene bottom sediments are represented by two types of sequences: 1) Fe-Mn enriched layers are formed near the sediment-water interface under oxygenated near bottom waters, and 2) such layers are not formed due to low concentrations of oxygen in water; but there are also non-laminated, homogeneous greyish-green silts, similar to those present in the lower parts of the first type of cores. Sedimentation rates (~0.10 cm y−1) were determined by 210Pb- and 137Cs geochronologies.  相似文献

A thorough understanding of the fate and transport of metals in Lake Superior is necessary in order to predict the ability of Lake Superior to recover from anthropogenic perturbations (copper mining). Sediment cores were collected from nearshore and offshore sites in Lake Superior and used to evaluate spatial and temporal variations in copper loading associated with mining-related activities. Although both settings have been strongly affected by anthropogenic releases of copper, copper concentrations in nearshore cores are significantly greater than those found in offshore cores, implying that nearshore copper loading is dominated by simple deposition and burial of sediment generated from mining activities. Temporal variations in copper profiles in sediments from nearshore environments closelymimic copper production rates. Conversely, copper loading histories derived from offshore sediments are not well correlated to production rates. The offshore sediment cores, when compared with analogous cores from Lakes Ontario and Michigan, show that the average, lake-wide intensity of copper loading in Lake Superior is comparable to the other two lakes, despite the fact that Lake Superior has received the largest total burden of anthropogenic copper. Cu/Zn ratios, used to evaluate the amount of copper loading derived from mining discharges, vary strongly in nearshore environments in response to loading. Cu/Zn ratios in offshore sediments are much less variable, implying that copper loading may be regulated by additional mechanisms (solution chemistry and/or biologic uptake). Study of trace metal partitioning within Lake Superior sediments indicates that the organic fraction of the sediment contains the majority of the copper. Copper concentrations in offshore sediments are significantly correlated to organic carbon content of the sediment whereas copper concentrations in nearshore sediments are not. These findings support the model that transport and deposition of particles released from mining discharges dominate copper loading in nearshore sediments, whereas biologic uptake and settling of particulate organic matter may regulate copper loading in offshore sediments.  相似文献

Concentration profiles of major and trace elements were determined in sediment cores from the Central Basin of Lake Erie. The concentrations of trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the sediments were greatest at approximately 18 cm sediment depth, corresponding to the early 1960s. The concentrations of all elements in the sediments have considerably decreased in the last decade. However, the concentrations of Hg, Pb, and Cd are still about 10, 5, and 4 times greater, respec, than those in the pre-industrial sediments. The profiles of dissolved concentrations of the trace ele in pore water were characterized by maxima below the sediment-water interface, dropping off rapidly within the zone of reduced sediments. Concentrations of dissolved trace elements below the sediment-water interface are about one order of magnitude greater than those in the lake water. Conservative estimates of benthic fluxes ranged from 0.04 /μg/cm2.y to 194 /μg/cm2.y for Cd and Fe, respectively. Upward diffusive remobilization from sediments to lake water is a significant transport process in the Central Basin of Lake Erie and may play an important role in the transport of trace elements from the sediments.  相似文献

Relatively high concentrations (up to 98.5 ng/g dry wt) of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been found in two cores penetrating fluvial sands east of Lake Ontario. One core was taken from the upper Salmon River reservoir on the Tug Hill Plateau and the other from Rice Creek near the lake at Oswego. In both instances, portions of the cores containing PCBs and other organochlorines (OCs) lack excess radiogenic 210Pb and 137Cs, implying depositional ages predating widespread OC commercial production, use, and release. Within each core there is little vertical variation in PCB composition and highly chlorinated congeners dominate the pattern. In addition, the PCB signature is analytically indistinguishable between cores despite collection over 50 km apart. This argues against local sources, and implies deposition and accumulation by processes operating over a substantial area and time period. Transport and introduction of a residual fraction of colloidal-bound PCBs to the sands via tannin-rich riverine waters is proposed. The PCB congener-specific pattern of air samples collected during the spring and summer of 1999 downwind of the lake at two locations (Rice Creek and Sterling) are similar to the sediments and display anomalous concentrations and chlorination with respect to other air sampling localities in the Great Lakes. A link between the residual fraction of PCBs observed in the sediment and air patterns via volatilization from the terrestrial surface is proposed. Elevated PCB concentrations and chlorination in non radiogenic fluvial sands and air may reflect regional accumulation and weathering processes operating over many decades and/or enhancement of contaminant deposition and partitioning downwind of the lake related to lake-effect precipitation.  相似文献

The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHS) in water and sediments of seven wet detention ponds receiving urban stormwater were investigated. The ponds comprised traditional wet detention ponds with a permanent wet volume and a storage volume as well as ponds that were expanded with sand filters and other means to improve the removal of micropollutants. The concentrations of sigmaPAH in the sediments varied between 6 +/- 5 and 2,222 +/- 603 ng g(-1) dry weight (mean +/- standard deviation), and were highest in the ponds with lower pond volume per catchment area and did not clearly reflect different activities in the catchments. In general, the concentrations of PAHS in the sediments decreased from inlet to outlet, especially in the systems with good conditions for sedimentation such as systems with flow perpendicular sand dikes and extensive submerged vegetation. High molecular weight PAHs were predominant in the sediments indicating the pyrogenic origin of the PAHS. There was no correlation between PAH species concentrations in water or sediments and their hydrophobicity (log K(ow)). PAH concentrations in water fluctuated in response to intensity and frequency of rain events, whereas concentrations in the sediments integrated the pollutant load over time. Pond systems expanded with sand filters and other technologies to enhance removal of micropollutants consistently had concentrations of PAHS in the effluents below the detection level.  相似文献

Contamination of Lake Ontario by persistent organic compounds began with the development of the chemical industry along the Niagara River. These compounds are discharged to the river where they are scavenged from the water column by sedimenting particulates which in turn settle out in depositional areas of Lake Ontario. We have determined 210Pb, 137Cs, and chlorinated hydrocarbon profiles of sediment cores taken about 3 km from the mouth of the Niagara River. Age profiles of the sediments were constructed from the radionuclide measurements and used to determine historic trends of chlorinated hydrocarbon input to Lake Ontario. The historical record found in the sediments for chlorobenzenes, chlorotoluenes, hexachlorobutadiene, octachlorostyrene, mirex, and PCBs is in good agreement with known production and usage patterns of the chemicals. Pollution of Lake Ontario with chlorinated hydrocarbons from the Niagara River is still occurring, but the worst contamination of the lake occurred in the 1960s.  相似文献

Surficial sediments from southern Lake Huron, Lake St. Clair, and Lake Erie have been analyzed for a broad spectrum of chlorinated organics including PCBs, chlorobenzenes, and several pesticides. The differences between sediment contaminant concentrations in Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair indicated sources of hexachlorobenzene, hexachlorobutadiene, octachlorostyrene, and several other chlorinated benzenes along the St. Clair River. Similar differences between sediment PCB concentrations in Lakes Huron/St. Clair and Lake Erie indicated major PCB sources along the Detroit River. Specific PCB congener analysis revealed that PCBs discharged to the Detroit River contained especially high concentrations of highly chlorinated hexa-, hepta-, and octachloro-biphenyls which are major constituents of the industrial mixture Aroclor 1260. The analysis of individual PCB congeners made it possible to trace PCBs of Detroit River origin to the central and eastern basins of Lake Erie, and to estimate the contribution of the Detroit River to the PCB burden in sediments of these basins.  相似文献

Suspended sediment and raw water samples have been collected and analyzed for organochlorines and PCBs from a fixed location in the lower Niagara River at Niagara-on-the-Lake approximately weekly since 1979. Eight of the 19 organochlorine compounds measured were detected in more than 50% of the water samples analyzed, while 11 of the 19 compounds were detected in more than 50% of the suspended sediments collected at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Of the 10 chlorobenzene isomers measured, the one with the greatest usage (1, 4-dichloro) occurs in largest concentrations in the suspended sediments at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Other chlorobenzene isomers commonly occurring in suspended sediments are 1, 2 and 1, 3 dichloro, 1, 2, 4-trichloro, 1,2, 3, 4-tetrachloro, pentachloro, and hexachloro. All isomers of chlorobenzene occurred in more than 70% of the suspended sediment samples collected. Total loadings to Lake Ontario calculated from these data indicate that PCB loadings are about twice as high as previously reported, while mirex and total DDT hate decreased slightly. Although concentrations of contaminants in suspended sediments are usually higher than those measured in water samples, they are responsible for only about 40% of the total loadings for PCBs, DDT, and HCB, and significantly less for other organochlorine contaminants. Therefore, the data indicate that, to estimate total contaminant loadings, the water fraction must be sampled. Lake Erie is not the major source of such organic contaminants as PCBs and chlorobenzenes because contaminant levels in Lake Erie bottom sediments are 10 times lower for PCBs and 20 times lower for chlorobenzenes than in Niagara-on-the-Lake suspended sediments.  相似文献

Three sediment vibra cores (SR1a, SR5, and SR8) were collected from the Sheboygan River and Inner Harbor (Wisconsin, USA) in 2002, to ascertain concentrations and possible sources of priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Radiometric dating using 210Pb and 137Cs showed that the sediment cores span a time period of 154 years from 1848 to 2002. GC-MSD analysis showed that total PAH concentrations in the sediments range from ∼1 to 350 mg/kg. The concentrations of PAHs are very dependent on core location and the time of deposition of specific layers, and their variations are in agreement with historical records of PAH discharges in the study site. Source apportionment using a chemical mass balance (CMB) model indicated that highway (HWY) dust (gasoline and diesel engine), coal and wood gasification (CWG), and coke oven emissions (CO) are the major PAH sources. The contribution from CWG has decreased after a local manufactured gas plant was shut down in 1929 (SR5 and SR8), and after facilities were removed in the 1950s (SR1a). Maximal CO contributions are found ∼1870–1890 in SR1a reflecting plant production records. There is evidence of redistribution of CO and CWG contaminated sediment during a storm in 1975 (SR5 and SR8).  相似文献

The spatial distribution of hydrophobic organic contaminants, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and octachlorostyrene (OCS) in sediments of the Detroit River was established using data from a 1999 river-wide survey. The survey employed a stratified random sampling design that divided the river into six geostatistical zones consisting of upper, middle, and lower U.S. and equivalent Canadian river reaches. Organic carbon normalized OCS sediment concentrations demonstrated no significant differences between U.S. or Canadian sediments or upstream/downstream gradients suggesting that OCS is derived primarily from sources upstream of the Detroit River. In contrast, sum PCBs and sum PAHs were significantly elevated at U.S. as compared to Canadian stations and demonstrated significant increasing upstream/downstream gradients in organic carbon normalized sediment contamination. The upper and middle U.S. river reaches contained a number of near-shore stations with high localized PCB and PAH sediment concentrations suggesting multiple inputs along the upper U.S. portion of the river. Consistent with past surveys, wide-spread sediment contamination of PCBs and PAHs continues to be observed in the highly industrialized Trenton Channel and downstream of Grosse Isle. Threshold effect level (TEL) sediment quality guidelines for PAHs and PCBs were exceeded in 92.6 and 77.8%, respectively, of stations in Trenton Channel and downstream of Grosse Isle. This large reservoir of degraded sediments in the lower U.S. river reach has the potential to enter Lake Erie during sediment disturbance events and likely contributes to gentoxic stress and increased bioaccumulation of PCBs in resident benthos, fish, and wildlife.  相似文献

This work aims to characterise the pollutant loads fixed to the Lift Station (LS) sediments. Firstly, levels of n-alkanes, PAH and heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd) of LS sediments were assessed, and were found of the same order of magnitude as those reported for street runoff. In addition, investigations on LS sediment reveal that n-alkane distributions reflect the combination of biologic and petrogenic inputs, while PAH distributions indicate a major pyrolytic origin with traces of petrogenic contaminations. The metallic fingerprints also attest to the important contribution of road traffic emissions. Secondly, a comparison between LS sediment and the Gross Bed Sediment (GBS) pollutant contamination was established in order to optimize the in-sewer deposits management. For hydrocarbons, a similar contamination between both sediments is found. For the heavy metals, this comparison indicates a similar Fe and Zn content, while Pb, Cu and Cd contents differ. Indeed, LS sediment shows a higher Cu content, linked to the occurrence of intensive brake lining abrasion, compared with GBS, which reflects a higher Pb and Cd content, owing to the contribution of roof runoff. This result reveals the impact of specific inputs such as road traffic or roof runoff on the in-sewer sediments contamination, and provides a complete overview of the LS sediment contamination. This database could be used by the municipality to optimize their contaminated in-sewer sediment management.  相似文献

Microbial pollution in surface waters is a concern throughout the world, with both public health and economic implications. One contributing source to such pollution is stormwater runoff, often treated using various types of stormwater control measures. However, relatively little is known regarding microbe sequestration in constructed stormwater wetlands (CSWs), one type of commonly installed stormwater control measure. In this study, indicator bacteria concentrations in both the water and sediment of a CSW were evaluated at multiple locations. Results suggested that fecal coliform concentrations in stormwater runoff decrease through the system, with relatively consistent concentrations noted throughout the second half of the wetland. This potentially indicates a baseline concentration of fecal coliform is present due to internal processes such as animal activity and microbial persistence. However, wetland sediments showed little E. coli present during most sampling events, with minimal patterns existing with respect to sediment sampling location. CSW designs should promote optimization of hydraulic retention time and minimization of stormwater velocities to promote sedimentation and degradation of microbes by way of wetland treatment functions.  相似文献
