In this paper, a doubly-iterative linear receiver, equipped with a soft-information aided frequency domain minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) equalizer, is proposed for the combined equalization and decoding of coded continuous phase modulation (CPM) signals over long multipath fading channels. In the proposed receiver architecture, the front-end frequency domain equalizer (FDE) is followed by the soft-input, softoutput (SISO) CPM demodulator and channel decoder modules. The receiver employs double turbo processing by performing back-end demodulation/decoding iterations per each equalization iteration to improve the a priori information for the front-end FDE. As presented by the computational complexity analysis and simulations, this process provides not only a significant reduction in the overall computational complexity, but also a performance improvement over the previously proposed iterative and noniterative MMSE receivers.

This paper presents two equalizer structures for trellis-coded continuous phase modulation (TC-CPM) on multipath fading intersymbol interference (ISI) channels. An equivalent discrete-time (DT) model is developed by combining the tapped-delay-line (TDL) model of the frequency-selective channel and by oversampling at the receiver. The (noninterleaved) fractionally spaced maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) equalizer performs continuous phase modulation (CPM) demodulation, trellis-coded modulation (TCM) decoding, and channel equalization by exploiting the finite state nature of the ISI-corrupted TC-CPM signal. Both simulation and analytical results show diversity-like improvement when performing joint MLSE decoding and equalization. For the interleaved soft-output equalizer, the soft symbol metric is delivered to the TCM decoder by using a forward and backward recursion algorithm. Three variants of the soft-output equalizer are examined. We conclude that the backward recursion is essential to partial response CPM schemes, and with moderate complexity, the soft-output equalizer can have a substantial advantage over a noninterleaved MLSE equalizer

Turbo equalization that cooperates with channel prediction and iterative channel estimation is investigated for mobile wireless communications. Frames of information bits are encoded, interleaved, and mapped to symbols for transmission over time-varying frequency-selective fading channels. At the receiver, the Turbo equalizer consists of a maximum a posteriori probability equalizer/demapper and a soft-input soft-output maximum a posteriori probability decoder. With initial channel estimates and sparse pilot insertion across a number of frames, the receiver predicts the channel of the current frame. The effect of error propagation of channel prediction is mitigated by the de-interleaver that is embedded in the Turbo equalizer. The predicted and interpolated channel is refined through a channel estimator that uses the soft estimates of data symbols at each Turbo iteration. Due to the bandlimiting feature of channel variation, the channel estimation error can be smoothed by low-pass filters that follow the channel estimator. Simulation results show that incorporating Turbo equalization with channel prediction and iterative channel estimation can combat time- and frequency-selective fading and improve reception performance.

This paper presents a new fractionally-spaced maximum a posteriori (MAP) equalizer for data transmission over frequency-selective fading channels. The technique is applicable to any standard modulation technique. The MAP equalizer uses an expanded hypothesis trellis for the purpose of joint channel estimation and equalization. The fading channel is estimated by coupling minimum mean square error techniques with the (fixed size) expanded trellis. The new MAP equalizer is also presented in an iterative (turbo) receiver structure. Both uncoded and conventionally coded systems (including iterative processing) are studied. Even on frequency-flat fading channels, the proposed receiver outperforms conventional techniques. Simulations demonstrate the performance of the proposed equalizer

利用系统的迭代解调解扩和解码的特点,设计了软输入输出的接收机,接收机中解调器采用MAP(Maximum A Posterior)和SOVA(Soft Output Viterbi Algorithm)算法,解码器采用MAP算法.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system suffers extra performance degradation in fast fading channels due to intercarrier interference (ICI). Combining frequency domain equalization and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM), the iterative receiver is able to harvest both temporal and frequency diversity. Realizing that ICI channels are intrinsically ISI channels, this paper proposes a soft-in soft-out (SISO) maximum a posteriori (MAP) equalizer by extending Ungerboeck's maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) formulation to ICI channels. The SISO MAP equalizer employs BCJR algorithm and computes the bit log-likelihood ratios (LLR) for the entire received sequence by efficiently constructing a trellis that takes into account of the ICI channel structure. A reduced state (RS) formulation of the SISO MAP equalizer which provides good performance/complexity tradeoff is also described. Utilizing the fact that ICI energy is clustered in adjacent subcarriers, frequency domain equalization is made localized. This paper further proposes two computational efficient linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) based equalization methods: recursive q-tap SIC-LMMSE equalizer and recursive Sliding-Window (SW) SIC-LMMSE equalizer respectively. Simulations results demonstrate that the iterative SISO RS-MAP equalizer achieves the performance of no ICI with normalized Doppler frequency fdTs up to 20.46% in realistic mobile WiMAX environment.

Minimum mean squared error equalization using a priori information
A number of important advances have been made in the area of joint equalization and decoding of data transmitted over intersymbol interference (ISI) channels. Turbo equalization is an iterative approach to this problem, in which a maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) equalizer and a MAP decoder exchange soft information in the form of prior probabilities over the transmitted symbols. A number of reduced-complexity methods for turbo equalization have been introduced in which MAP equalization is replaced with suboptimal, low-complexity approaches. We explore a number of low-complexity soft-input/soft-output (SISO) equalization algorithms based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. This includes the extension of existing approaches to general signal constellations and the derivation of a novel approach requiring less complexity than the MMSE-optimal solution. All approaches are qualitatively analyzed by observing the mean-square error averaged over a sequence of equalized data. We show that for the turbo equalization application, the MMSE-based SISO equalizers perform well compared with a MAP equalizer while providing a tremendous complexity reduction

In this paper, we study the performance of the continuous phase modulation (CPM)‐based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CPM‐OFDM) system. Also, we propose a CPM‐based single‐carrier frequency domain equalization (CPM‐SC‐FDE) structure for broadband wireless communication systems. The proposed structure combines the advantages of the low complexity of SC‐FDE, in addition to exploiting the channel frequency diversity and the power efficiency of CPM. Both the CPM‐OFDM system and the proposed system are implemented with FDE to avoid the complexity of the equalization. Two types of frequency domain equalizers are considered and compared for performance evaluation of both systems; the zero forcing (ZF) equalizer and the minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer. Simulation experiments are performed for a variety of multipath fading channels. Simulation results show that the performance of the CPM‐based systems with multipath fading is better than their performance with single path fading. The performance over a multipath channel is at least 5 and 12 dB better than the performance over a single path channel, for the CPM‐OFDM system and the proposed CPM‐SC‐FDE system, respectively. The results also show that, when CPM is utilized in SC‐FDE systems, they can outperform CPM‐OFDM systems by about 5 dB. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The number of users that can be supported by frequency-hopped, spread-spectrum multiple-access systems can be increased greatly by using multiuser demodulation and iterative decoding. In the receiver employed hard-decision multiuser demodulation followed by iterative decoding, users exchange decoded information with each other. Additional information from multiuser demodulation in the first decoding iteration is limited by the hard-decision output of the multiuser demodulator. The error-correction used was an errors-and-erasures Reed-Solomon (RS) decoder. We revisit hard-decision demodulation and conventional RS decoding. Hard-decision multiuser demodulation is modified to provide a soft output, which is then given to a nonbinary block turbo code with shortened RS codes as the constituent codes. An iterative multiuser decoding algorithm is developed to do soft multiuser interference cancellation. This soft receiver with soft demodulation and decoding is shown to be more resistant to multiuser interference and channel noise, especially at lower values of signal-to-noise ratio. The results show a great improvement in the ability of the system to support more users (more than three times in some cases), as compared with systems that erase all hits or employ hard-decision multiuser demodulation followed by RS code. We examine the proposed method for synchronous as well as asynchronous frequency-hopped systems in both AWGN and fading channels.

In this letter, we consider iterative decision-feedback differential demodulation (iterative DFDM), which was proposed previously as a low-complexity solution for power-efficient transmission over flat fading channels without channel state information at the receiver. We devise a modified demodulator (inner decoder), which improves both the achievable bit-error rate performance and the convergence of iterative DFDM without increasing complexity. We also establish an equivalent decoder model for iterative DFDM which enables a convergence analysis by means of extrinsic information transfer charts.

The presence of both multiple-access interference (MAI) and intersymbol interference (ISI) constitutes a major impediment to reliable communications in multipath code-division multiple-access (CDMA) channels. In this paper, an iterative receiver structure is proposed for decoding multiuser information data in a convolutionally coded asynchronous multipath DS-CDMA system. The receiver performs two successive soft-output decisions, achieved by a soft-input soft-output (SISO) multiuser detector and a bank of single-user SISO channel decoders, through an iterative process. At each iteration, extrinsic information is extracted from detection and decoding stages and is then used as a priori information in the next iteration, just as in turbo decoding. Given the multipath CDMA channel model, a direct implementation of a sliding-window SISO multiuser detector has a prohibitive computational complexity. A low-complexity SISO multiuser detector is developed based on a novel nonlinear interference suppression technique, which makes use of both soft interference cancellation and instantaneous linear minimum mean-square error filtering. The properties of such a nonlinear interference suppressor are examined, and an efficient recursive implementation is derived. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed low complexity iterative receiver structure for interference suppression and decoding offers significant performance gain over the traditional noniterative receiver structure. Moreover, at high signal-to-noise ratio, the detrimental effects of MAI and ISI in the channel can almost be completely overcome by iterative processing, and single-user performance can be approached

We introduce an iterative joint channel and data estimation receiver that exploits both the power of pilot-symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) and turbo coding for fading channels. The key innovation is a low-complexity soft channel estimator which divides a processing block into overlapped cells and performs maximum a posteriori (MAP) sequence estimation and MMSE filtering based on the received signal and extrinsic information delivered by the soft channel decoder. Simulation results show that for turbo-coded PSAM systems under time-variant fading the proposed receiver offers significant performance gains over a non-iterative receiver and two other cancellation schemes

This paper deals with a receiver scheme where adaptive equalization and channel decoding are jointly optimized in an iterative process. This receiver scheme is well suited for transmissions over a frequency-selective channel with large delay spread and for high spectral efficiency modulations. A low-complexity soft-input soft-output M-ary channel decoder is proposed. Turbo equalization allows intersymbol interference to be reduced drastically. For most time-invariant discrete channels, the turbo-equalizer performance is close to the coded Gaussian channel performance, even for low signal-to-noise ratios. Finally, results over a time-varying frequency-selective channel proves the excellent behavior of the turbo equalizer

A decision-feedback maximum a posteriori (MAP) receiver is proposed for code-division multiple-access channels with time-selective fading. The receiver consists of a sequence-matched filter and a MAP demodulator. Output samples (more than one per symbol) from the matched filter are fed into the MAP demodulator. The MAP demodulator exploits the channel memory by delaying the decision and using a sequence of observations. This receiver also rejects multiple-access interference and estimates channel fading coefficients implicitly to give good demodulation decisions. Moreover, computer simulations are performed to evaluate the bit-error rate performance of the receiver under various channel conditions

Low-complexity MMSE turbo equalization: a possible solution for EDGE
This paper deals with a low complexity receiver scheme where equalization and channel decoding are jointly optimized in an iterative process. We derive the theoretical transfer function of the infinite length linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer with a priori information. A practical implementation is exposed which employs the fast Fourier transform (FFT) to compute the equalizer coefficients, resulting in a low-complexity receiver structure. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated for the enhanced general packet radio service (EGPRS) radio link. Simulation results show that significant power gains may be achieved with only a few (3-4) iterations. These results demonstrate that MMSE turbo equalization is an attractive candidate for single-carrier broadband wireless transmissions in long delay-spread environments.

We introduce a novel framework for soft-input, soft-output (SISO) equalization in frequency selective multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) channels based on the well-known belief propagation (BP) algorithm. As in the BP equalizer, we model the multipath channels using factor graphs (FGs) where the transmitted and received signals are represented by the function and variable nodes respectively. The edges connecting the function and variable nodes illustrate the dependencies of the multipath channel and soft decisions are developed by exchanging information on these edges iteratively. We incorporate powerful techniques such as groupwise iterative multiuser detection (IMUD), probabilistic data association (PDA) and sphere decoding (SD) in order to reduce the computational complexity of BP equalizer with relatively small degradation in performance. The computational complexity of this new reduced-complexity BP (RCBP) equalizer grows linearly with block size and memory length of the channel. The proposed framework has a flexible structure that allows for parallel as well as serial detection. We will illustrate through simulations that the RCBP equalizer can even handle overloaded scenarios where the channel matrix is rank deficient, and it can achieve excellent performance by applying iterative equalization using the low-density parity check codes (LDPC).
