As possible substitutes for high-strength Cu–Be alloys, Cu–6Ni–2Mn–2Sn–2Al alloys have been developed. To clarify the physical background of the effect of trace Zr on the fatigue strength of such alloys, the initiation and propagation behavior of a major crack that led to the fracture of the tested specimens was monitored. When the stress amplitude was less than σ a = 350 MPa, the fatigue life of the alloys with Zr was about 2–2.5 times larger than that of the alloy without Zr. When σ a > 350 MPa, the effect of Zr addition on the fatigue life dramatically decreases as the stress amplitude increases. The increased fatigue life due to Zr addition resulted from an enhancement of the crack initiation life and microcrack growth life. The enhanced crack initiation life was mainly attributed to the strengthening of grain boundaries due to the precipitation of SnZr compounds. A statistical analysis of the behavior of multiple cracks was made to quantitatively evaluate the scatter in fatigue behavior. The statistical analysis supported the conclusions obtained from the behavior of a major crack.  相似文献

Tensile and high cycle fatigue (HCF) properties of the hot-rolled Mg–12Gd–3Y (wt.%) magnesium alloy have been investigated. The magnesium alloy exhibits a fatigue strength of about 150 MPa, which is much higher than that of the commercial Mg–8Al–Zn alloy AZ80. Aging heat-treatment (T5) improved the fatigue life of the Mg–12Gd–3Y alloy. Fatigue cracks nucleated at the intense slip bands in the as-rolled alloy. After T5 treatment, however, the fatigue crack nucleation site shifted to the phase boundaries between MgGdY particles and Mg matrix. T5 heat-treatment retarded the crack initiation and thus improved the fatigue life of the Mg–12Gd–3Y alloy.  相似文献

The high-cycle stress-life (SN) curve and fatigue crack growth threshold (ΔKth) behaviour of COMRAL-85TM, a 6061 aluminium–magnesium–silicon alloy reinforced with 20 vol.% Al2O3-based polycrystalline ceramic microspheres, and manufactured by a liquid metallurgy route, have been investigated for a stress ratio of R = −1 (fully reversed loading). Fatigue testing was conducted on both smooth round bar (SN) specimens and notched round bar (fatigue threshold) specimens. Unreinforced Al 6061-T6 also processed by a liquid metallurgy route and six powder metallurgy processed composites with particle volume fractions ranging between 5% and 30% were also studied. SN data revealed that the powder metallurgy processed composites generally gave longer fatigue lives than the matrix alloy, whereas COMRAL-85TM exhibited a reduced fatigue life. The fatigue threshold results were very similar for all the composites, being lower than for Al 6061-T6. Fatigue failure mechanisms were determined from examination of the fracture surfaces and the crack profiles.  相似文献

The Mg–8Gd–2Y–1Nd–0.3Zn–0.6Zr (wt.%) alloy sheet was prepared by hot extrusion technique, and the structure and mechanical properties of the extruded alloy were investigated. The results show that the alloy in different states is mainly composed of α-Mg solid solution and secondary phases of Mg5RE and Mg24RE5 (RE = Gd, Y and Nd). At aging temperatures from 200 °C to 300 °C the alloy exhibits obvious age-hardening response. Great improvement of mechanical properties is observed in the peak-aged state alloy (aged at 200 °C for 60 h), the ultimate tensile strength (σb), tensile yield strength (σ0.2) and elongation () are 376 MPa, 270 MPa and 14.2% at room temperature (RT), and 206 MPa, 153 MPa and 25.4% at 300 °C, respectively, the alloy exhibits high thermal stability.  相似文献

In this paper, the small fatigue crack behavior of titanium alloy TC4 at different stress ratios was investigated. Single‐edge‐notch tension specimens were fatigued axially under a nominal maximum stress of 370 MPa at room temperature. Results indicate that fatigue cracks in TC4 initiate from the interface between α and β phases or within α phase. More than 90% of the total fatigue life is consumed in the small crack initiation and growth stages. The crack growth process of TC4 can be divided into three typical stages, ie, microstructurally small crack stage, physically small crack stage, and long crack stage. Although the stress ratio has a significant effect on the total fatigue life and crack initiation life at constant σmax, its effect on crack growth rate is indistinguishable at R = ?0.1, 0.1, and 0.3 when crack growth rate is plotted as a function of ?K.  相似文献

In this study, the tensile properties, high cycle fatigue behavior and plane-strain fracture toughness of the sand-cast Mg–10Gd–3Y–0.5Zr magnesium alloy were investigated, comparison to that of sand-cast plus T6 heat treated magnesium alloy which named after sand-cast-T6. The results showed that the tensile properties of the sand-cast alloy are greatly improved after T6 heat treatment, and the fatigue strength (at 107 cycles) of the sand-cast Mg–10Gd–3Y–0.5Zr magnesium alloy increases from 95 to 120 MPa after T6 heat treatment, i.e. the improvement of 26% in fatigue strength has been achieved. The plane-strain fracture toughnesses KIC of the sand-cast and sand-cast-T6 alloys are about 12.1 and 16.3 MPa m1/2, respectively. In addition, crack initiation, crack propagation and fracture behavior of the studied alloys after tensile test, high cycle fatigue test and plane-strain fracture toughness test were also investigated systematically.  相似文献

The Cu–10Cr–0.4Zr alloy and the in situ composites based on the alloy were prepared. Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Cu–10Cr–0.4Zr in situ composites were investigated. The results showed that the addition of 0.4 wt.% Zr in the Cu–10 wt.% Cr in situ composites gave birth to smaller as-cast Cr dendrites, which led to finer filaments at higher strain ratios. The ultimate strength of Cu–10Cr–0.4Zr composites reached 1089 MPa at draw ratio of η = 6.2, however that of Cu–10Cr prepared by the same procedure was only 887 MPa. The increasing strength of Cu–10Cr–0.4Zr in situ composites could be attributed to the combination of Hall–Petch strengthening of closely spaced Cr filaments, the strengthening effect of Zr and the strengthened Cu matrix.  相似文献

The fatigue crack growth behaviors of Laser formed and ingot metallurgy (IM) Ti–6Al–4V alloys were studied in three environments: vacuum, air and 3.5% NaCl solution. Taking the Unified Fatigue Damage Approach, the fatigue crack growth data were analyzed with two intrinsic parameters, stress intensity amplitude ΔK and maximum stress intensity Kmax, and their limiting values ΔK* and . Fatigue crack growth rates da/dN were found increase with stress ratio R, highest in 3.5% NaCl solution, somewhat less in air and lowest in vacuum, and higher in IM alloy than in Laser formed one. In 3.5% NaCl solution, stress corrosion cracking (SCC) was superimposed on fatigue at R=0.9 for where Kmax>KISCC, the threshold stress intensity for SCC. This and environment-assisted fatigue crack growth were evidenced by the deviation in fatigue crack growth trajectory (ΔK* vs. curve) from the pure fatigue line where . Furthermore, the fractographic features, identified along the trajectory path, reflected the fatigue crack growth behaviors of both alloys in a given environment.  相似文献

This work investigated the effect of nominal boron additions of 0.1 and 1.0 wt.% on the elevated-temperature (455 °C) fatigue deformation behavior of Ti–6Al–4V(wt.%) castings for maximum applied stresses between 250 and 450 MPa (R = 0.1 and 5 Hz). Boron additions resulted in a dramatic refinement of the as-cast grain size, and larger boron additions resulted in larger titanium-boride (TiB) phase volume percents. The boron-containing alloys exhibited longer average fatigue lives than those for Ti–6Al–4V, which was suggested to be related to the reduced as-cast grain size and the addition of strong and stiff TiB phase. The Ti–6Al–4V–0.1B alloy exhibited the longest average fatigue lives. The TiB phase cracked during the fatigue experiments and this resulted in a decreasing Young's modulus with increased cycle number. Each alloy exhibited α-phase cracking and environmentally assisted surface edge cracking.  相似文献

The variability in fatigue behavior is often what drives the design of components such as turbine engine blades and disks. These components are critical and must be designed with a very low probability of failure over the lifetime of the system. To meet that design criterion, the lower limit of fatigue life capability is typically used. The challenge is to reliably predict the lower limit of fatigue behavior. This study investigates the fatigue variability of an alpha + beta processed Ti–6Al–4V turbine engine alloy by conducting a statistically significant number of repeated tests at a few conditions. Testing includes three conditions including two maximum stresses, 675 and 635 MPa; and two surface conditions, electropolished and low stress grinding. All tests are constant amplitude with a stress ratio of 0.1. A similar approach has been performed on several other turbine engine material systems often revealing a bimodal behavior. It is proposed that crack propagation using small crack growth data can be used to predict the low life behavior mode and is demonstrated with the Ti–6Al–4V data.  相似文献

The effect of initial temper on the tensile creep behavior of a cast Mg–Gd–Nd–Zr alloy has been investigated. Specimens in unaged, underaged and peak-aged conditions exhibit a sigmoidal creep stage between the primary and steady-state creep stage, while the overaged specimens have no such creep stage. Transmission electron microscope observations revealed that sigmoidal creep stage was induced by the dynamic precipitation in the microstructure, and the rapid formation of β1-phase and β-phase plates takes responsibility for the softening of material in this stage. Comparative evaluation of creep properties of the specimens showed that alloy in overaged condition had creep resistance superior to those in other conditions. Stress and temperature dependence of the steady-state creep rate were studied over a temperature range of 250–300 °C and stress range of 50–100 MPa, and a dislocation creep mechanism was proposed for the alloy.  相似文献

Microstructures and mechanical properties of the Mg–8Gd–xZn–0.4Zr (x = 0, 1 and 3 wt.%) alloys, in the as-cast condition and the as-extruded condition, have been investigated. The results show that both the 14H long periodic stacking structure and the W-phase coexist together in the cast Zn-containing alloys. The volume fraction of the W-phase increases with increasing the addition of Zn. This phase is the crack source of the fracture. The 6H long periodic stacking structure is observed in the extruded Zn-containing alloys. The Mg–8Gd–1Zn–0.4Zr alloy exhibits the highest elongation, and the value of its elongation is 130% at 300 °C due to the refined microstructure. The W-phase plays an important role in improving the mechanical properties via pinning the movement of the grains at elevated temperature.  相似文献

Al–Sc and Al–Sc–Zr alloys containing 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 wt.% Sc and 0.15 wt.% Zr were investigated using optical microscopy, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The phase composition of the alloys and the morphology of precipitates that developed during solidification in the sand casting process and subsequent thermal treatment of the samples were studied. XRD analysis shows that the weight percentage of the Al3Sc/Al3(Sc, Zr) precipitates was significantly below 1% in all alloys except for the virgin Al0.5Sc0.15Zr alloy. In this alloy the precipitates were observed as primary dendritic particles. In the binary Al–Sc alloys, ageing at 470 °C for 24 h produced precipitates associated with dislocation networks, whereas the precipitates in the annealed Al–Sc–Zr alloys were free of interfacial dislocations except at the lowest content of Sc. Development of large incoherent precipitates during precipitation heat treatment reduced hardness of all the alloys studied. Growth of the Al3Sc/Al3(Sc, Zr) precipitates after heat treatment was less at low Sc content and in the presence of Zr. Increase in hardness was observed after heat treatment at 300 °C in all alloys. There is a small difference in hardness between binary and ternary alloys slow cooled after sand casting.  相似文献

The effects of temper condition and corrosion on the fatigue behavior of a laser beam welded Al–Cu–Mg–Ag alloy (2139) have been investigated. Natural aging (T3 temper) and artificial aging (T8 temper) have been applied prior to welding. Corrosion testing has been performed by exposing the welded specimens to a salt spray medium for 720 h. Aging influences the corrosion behavior of laser welds. In the T3 temper, corrosion attack is in the form of pitting in the weld area, while in the T8 temper corrosion is in the form of pitting and intergranular corrosion in the base metal. In the latter case corrosion is attributed to the presence of grain boundary precipitates. Corrosion degrades the fatigue behavior of 2139 welds. The degradation is equal for both the T3 and T8 tempers and for the corrosion exposure selected in this study corresponds to a 52% reduction in fatigue limit. In both cases fatigue crack initiation is associated with corrosion pits, which act as stress raisers. In the T3 temper, the fatigue crack initiation site is at the weld metal/heat affected zone interface, while for the T8 temper the initiation site is at the base metal. Fatigue crack initiation in uncorroded 2139 welds occurs at the weld toe at the root side, the weld reinforcement playing a principal role as stress concentration site. The fatigue crack propagates through the partially melted zone and the weld metal in all cases. The findings in this paper present useful information for the selection of appropriate heat treatment conditions, to facilitate control of the corrosion behavior in aluminium welds, which is of great significance for their fatigue performance.  相似文献

The microstructure and compressive creep behaviors of as-cast and aging-treated Mg–5 wt% Sn alloys are investigated in this paper. The compressive creep resistance of aging-treated Mg–5 wt% Sn alloy is much better than that of as-cast alloy at the applied stresses from 25 MPa to 35 MPa and the temperatures from 423 K to 473 K, which is mainly due to the dispersive distribution of Mg2Sn phase in the aging-treated Mg–5 wt% Sn alloy. The calculated average values of stress exponent n and activation energy Qc suggest that dislocation cross slip and dislocation climb happen respectively in as-cast and aging-treated Mg–5 wt% Sn alloys during creep.  相似文献

A study was conducted to verify the efficacy of a fracture mechanics methodology to model the crack growth behavior of fretting fatigue-nucleated cracks obtained under test conditions similar to those found in turbine engine blade attachments. Experiments were performed to produce cracked samples, and fretting fatigue crack propagation lives were calculated for each sample. Cracks were generated at 106 cycles (10%-of-life) under applied stress conditions previously identified as the fretting fatigue limit conditions for a 107 cycle fatigue life. Resulting cracks, ranging in size from 30 to 1200 μm, were identified and measured using scanning electron microscopy. Uniaxial fatigue limit stresses were determined experimentally for the fretting fatigue-cracked samples, using a step loading technique, for R=0.5 at 300 Hz. Fracture surfaces were inspected to characterize the fretting fatigue crack front indicated by heat tinting. The shape and size of the crack front were then used in calculating ΔKth values for each crack. The resulting uniaxial fatigue limit and ΔKth values compared favorably with the baseline fatigue strength (660 MPa) for this material and the ΔKth value (2.9 MPa√m) for naturally initiated cracks tested at R=0.5 on a Kitagawa diagram.Crack propagation lives were calculated using stress results of FEM analysis of the contact conditions and a weight function method for determination of ΔK. Resulting lives were compared with the nine million-cycle propagation life that would have been expected in the experiments, if the contact conditions had not been removed. Scatter in the experimental results for fatigue limit stresses and fatigue lives had to be considered as part of an explanation why the fatigue life calculations were unable to match the experiments that were modeled. Analytical life prediction results for the case where propagation life is observed to be very short experimentally were most accurate when using a coefficient of friction, μ=1.0, rather than for the calculations using μ=0.3  相似文献

Ti–5Al–4Sn–2Zr–1Mo–0.7Nd–0.25Si alloy is a new high temperature titanium alloy for aeroengine use. In this paper, the fatigue crack initiation in this alloy was investigated. At applied maximum nominal stresses less than 500 MPa, most cracks initiate in the matrix away from the Nd-rich particles. Initiation of these cracks is related to the cracking of equiaxed α phase on the prior β grain boundaries. At high applied stresses, almost half of the cracks initiate in the matrix away form the Nd-rich particles and the other half initiate near Nd-rich particles. The probability that an Nd-rich particle initiates a fatigue crack decreases very rapidly as the particle size falls below 12 μm.  相似文献

Mg–5Li–3Al–2Zn–xAg (x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.6, 1.2) alloys were prepared by medium-frequency induction furnace under the ambient of pure argon. The effect of Ag addition on the microstructure, tensile properties, and aging behavior was investigated. Results show that the addition of Ag can restrain the decomposition from MgAlLi2 to AlLi. With the addition of Ag, the over-aging point is retarded and the over-aging phenomenon is avoided in Mg–5Li–3Al–2Zn–1.2Ag. The solid solution of Ag in matrix phases and the restraining of the decomposition from MgAlLi2 to AlLi are two aspects that strengthen the alloys.  相似文献

The drive for increasing fuel efficiency and decreasing anthropogenic greenhouse effect via lightweighting leads to the development of several new Al alloys. The effect of Mn and Fe addition on the microstructure of Al‐Mg‐Si alloy in as‐cast condition was investigated. The mechanical properties including strain‐controlled low‐cycle fatigue characteristics were evaluated. The microstructure of the as‐cast alloy consisted of globular primary α‐Al phase and characteristic Mg2Si‐containing eutectic structure, along with Al8(Fe,Mn)2Si particles randomly distributed in the matrix. Relative to several commercial alloys including A319 cast alloy, the present alloy exhibited superior tensile properties without trade‐off in elongation and improved fatigue life due to the unique microstructure with fine grains and random textures. The as‐cast alloy possessed yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation of about 185 MPa, 304 MPa, and 6.3%, respectively. The stress‐strain hysteresis loops were symmetrical and approximately followed Masing behavior. The fatigue life of the as‐cast alloy was attained to be higher than that of several commercial cast and wrought Al alloys. Cyclic hardening occurred at higher strain amplitudes from 0.3% to 0.8%, while cyclic stabilization sustained at lower strain amplitudes of ≤0.2%. Examination of fractured surfaces revealed that fatigue crack initiated from the specimen surface/near‐surface, and crack propagation occurred mainly in the formation of fatigue striations.  相似文献
