In this paper, we use simple 3G modem cards to design and deploy a novel gateway bridging IP network and Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) 3G mobile network in Hong Kong. A simplified Session Initial Protocol (SIP) is devised to implement the gateway together with the 3G-324M protocol. Compared with the existent similar gateways, our gateway is much more implementable and less cost. Using the proposed gateway, we devise and develop a Video Instant Message System (VIMS) which achieves direct audio and video communications from terminals of the Internet like desktop to 3G mobile phones. Moreover, we produce and accomplish a Mobile Robotic Car Remote Control System (MRCRCS) based on the gateway and VIMS. In the MRCRCS, individuals can distantly control the moving direction of a robotic car by using a VIMS client or a 3G cell phone. By a series of practical experiments, we testify the efficiency and robustness of the gateway and its application scheme. 相似文献

Burgeoning competition in telecommunications is multiplying the number of communications paths into the home-but a standard multinetwork connection could sort them out. Services going into the residence may enter over copper wires, hybrid fiber coax, RF transmission, fiber to the curb, or, most importantly, by any combination of these sources and structures. To have a successful market, residential customers must be able to move smoothly from one combination of these offerings to another so that the customers consider the move worthwhile. For this multinetwork-to-multiservice interconnection to have value, it must be simple, and that simplicity is the basis for the residential gateway concept. In other words, the substantial complexity of the interconnection must be hidden from the consumer. An instruction set extension designed to accelerate multimedia applications is presented and evaluated. In the proposed complex streamed instruction (CSI) set, a single instruction can process vector data streams of arbitrary length and stride and combines complex memory accesses (with implicit prefetching), program control for vector sectioning, and complex computations on multiple data in a single operation. In this way, CSI eliminates overhead instructions (such as instructions for data sectioning, alignment, reorganization, and packing/unpacking) often needed in applications utilizing MMX-like extensions and accelerates key multimedia kernels. Simulation results demonstrate that a superscalar processor extended with CSI outperforms the same processor enhanced with Sun's VIS extension by a factor of up to 7.77 on key multimedia kernels and by up to 35% on full applications. 相似文献

This article provides an overview of the multimedia broadcast/multicast service (MBMS) for universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) networks. We first outline the features of UMTS networks as defined by the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) in order to provide a background for the discussion to follow. We then present the overall MBMS architecture, the services that it provides to the users and the differences between the broadcast and multicast options. The implementation details of MBMS are explained in terms of the modifications needed to the network, the new signaling procedures required and the impact of MBMS on the radio part of the network. We then describe how the security architecture of UMTS is used to support content protection and key distribution for MBMS groups. We evaluate the prospects of MBMS by comparing it first with IP multicast and then with DVB‐H, considered by many to be the closest competitor of MBMS. The opportunity to develop multimedia applications based on compressed video is the result of progress in three areas: standards, networking, and VLSI. Current video coding standards and their underlying algorithms use a variety of techniques to isolate and remove redundancies in the image sequence. Some of these techniques place severe demands on the underlying VLSI technology. Manufacturers of VLSI codecs have chosen a number of different architectural approaches. The advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed in the context of various applications with examples taken from existing or soon to be announced products. As networking technologies penetrate wide varieties of devices for daily usage, home networks are becoming a reality. The bandwidth and always-on connectivity provided by the rapidly growing broadband technologies, such as cable and digital subscriber line (DSL), render home networking even more attractive. A residential gateway is a device that interconnects various home devices to one another as well as to the Internet. The home networks being deployed today are simple and inexpensive with the residential gateway providing only connectivity. As home networks evolve and become more widespread, emerging applications on home networks will demand additional features that require quality of service. We present an architecture of a next-generation QoS-enabled residential gateway.
