近年来随着我国墙体材料革新和实施可持续发展战略的推进,硅酸钙板以其优越的品质和良好的性能备受业内人士和消费者的青睐。硅酸钙板在国外,特别是在日本、韩国、印尼、新加坡等东南亚地区销量很大,目前也有许多国家的客商从我国进口硅酸钙板,特别是日本用量缺口最大。在国内,众多的设计、施工、投资单位也正逐步看好硅酸钙板,北京、大连、深圳、上海等许多大中城市的重点建筑和高层建筑都选用硅酸钙板做内隔墙和吊顶,并悄悄地进入千家万户。目前,国内有硅酸钙板生产企业10家左右,北方只有2家,大部分在南方,市场上常见的品牌有金宫板、卓华…

Empowerment through Residence

What does it mean to empower people through the housing in which they live, and how is this empowerment to be achieved? These are the questions which are examined in this paper. Typologies of empowerment processes are devised in an attempt to make sense of the conceptual and empirical variety involved. The distinction between 'top-down' and 'bottom-up' empowerment orientations is argued to be particularly important for understanding the content, pattern and general direction of empowerment processes. Empowerments through knowledge, statute, resources, agreement and specific power transfer are then discussed in relation to specific housing contexts, in particular the context of social housing management. The utility of the typologies of empowerment processes is tested in application to specific tenant participation arrangements. It is concluded that resident empowerment is worth pursuing not only for its own sake, but for the benefits which it can bring to a wider society.

Air flow through cracks

The pressure flow characteristics of a number of full-scale model cracks, representative of real leakage paths, have been measured. The crack flow equations developed by Etheridge [1] have been verified over a wider range of parameters. The authors suggest a quadratic relationship: ΔP = A·Q+B·Q² which follows from the same flow theory as the Etheridge solution, to replace the ubiquitous power law as a practical fit to pressurisation data. Unlike the power law, the quadratic coefficients A and B can be directly related to crack parameters, and a simple graphical method is given to enable the prediction of crack leakage areas.     

Innovation through new blood

We model the influence of employee mobility on the transmission of knowledge between firms, assuming human capital to be an important influence on service innovation and firm productivity. To this end, we follow individual workers as they move from firm to firm, controlling for knowledge characteristics (‘absorptive capacity’) of the firm and for regional effects (agglomeration and urbanization). We measure the amount and variety of such flows, and we find statistically significant results; yet the impact of new employees on innovation and productivity seems to come more from the diversity of source firms than from the number of new employees, and effects differ markedly between small and larger firms.     

Looking through axonometric windows

From Frank Lloyd Wright's box-breaking corner windows to Le Corbusier's fenêtre en longueur and Mies van der Rohe's reflective glass walls, modernist architectural space emerged through the transformation of the window. As a mechanism for articulating the primordial architectural distinction between inside and outside, the window has long been a primary architectural element. In modern architecture, however, the types of window multiplied in response to new technologies, structural systems and cultural conditions. The window increased in importance as architects explored its capacity not only to control the transmission of light, air, heat, vision and information, but also to produce different kinds of space and to transform social distinctions such as those between public and private, self and other. In this essay I present a little-known chapter in that story: the series of windows American architect Claude Bragdon designed in 1915 using his system of ‘projective ornament’ (Fig. 1).
