Geotechnical Properties of JSC-1A Lunar Soil Simulant   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
For the success of planned missions to the moon in the near future, it is essential to have a thorough understanding of the geotechnical behavior of lunar soil. However, only a limited amount of information is available about geotechnical properties of lunar soils. In addition, the amount of lunar soils brought back to Earth is small. To help the development of new regolith moving machines and vehicles that will be used in future missions, a new lunar soil similant JSC-1A has been developed. A group of conventional geotechnical laboratory tests was conducted to characterize the geotechnical properties of the simulant, such as particle size distribution, maximum and minimum bulk densities, compaction characteristics, shear strength parameters, and compressibility.  相似文献

Soil plays an important role in the construction of foundations of roads and buildings. The utilization of soil traditionally involves the compaction of the in‐situ or previously loosened material to achieve a desired strength. The paper reports an initial investigation on the effect of the percentage of fines on the densification and strength of lunar‐soil simulant. The results of vibratory and static compaction tests in the laboratory suggest that the amount of fines should be reduced from the existing 50% that is typical for lunar regolith. The measurement of density and cone resistance of soil mix with only 10% showed large differences when compared to soils with 30% or 50% fines. No attempt has been made to find optimal soil mixes for compaction.  相似文献

Site Characterization Model Using Artificial Neural Network and Kriging   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, the problem of site characterization is treated as a task of function approximation of the large existing data from standard penetration tests (SPTs) in three-dimensional subsurface of Bangalore, India. More than 2,700 field SPT values (N) has been collected from 766 boreholes spread over an area of 220-km2 area in Bangalore, India. To get N corrected value (Nc), N values have been corrected for different parameters such as overburden stress, size of borehole, type of sampler, length of connected rod. In three-dimensional analysis, the function Nc = Nc(X,Y,Z), where X, Y, and Z are the coordinates of a point corresponds to Nc value, is to be approximated with which Nc value at any half-space point in Bangalore, India can be determined. An attempt has been made to develop artificial neural network (ANN) model using multilayer perceptrons that are trained with Levenberg-Marquardt back-propagation algorithm. Also, a geostatistical model based on ordinary kriging technique has been adopted. The knowledge of the semivariogram of the Nc values is used in the ordinary kriging method to predict the Nc values at any point in the subsurface of Bangalore, India where field measurements are not available. The results obtained show that ANN model is fairly accurate in predicting Nc values. In case of ordinary kriging, a new type of cross-validation analysis shows that it is a robust model for prediction of Nc values. A comparison between the ANN and geostatistical model demonstrates that the ANN model is superior to Geostatistical model in predicting Nc values in the subsurface of Bangalore, India.  相似文献

Instrumented Borehole Drilling for Subsurface Investigation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The successful application of instrumented borehole drilling techniques in offshore exploration has encouraged its further use on-shore as a ground investigation tool. The drilling of holes for grouting tubes creates the potential for obtaining supplementary ground information, which may be valuable to the succeeding tunnel construction. The instrumented drilling system was therefore investigated to determine its power to discriminate between ground strata. The configuration of the drilling system in terms of plant, equipment, and testing procedures was standardized and applied at a site in Kennington Park in London. The general characteristics of the measured drilling parameters are given and qualitative and quantitative methods of interpreting the drilling parameters are demonstrated. The possible soil–machine interactions that are responsible for the measured drilling characteristics are examined. A new method of data interpretation is proposed for identifying soil formation changes. Previously published correlations and analyses of drilling were examined and tested by comparing the trend-lines of drilling data in London clay against known undrained strength data. The degree of correlation was found to be limited.  相似文献

A new lunar highland soil simulant, NAO-1, has been created in National Astronomical Observatories (NAO), Chinese Academy of Sciences. This simulant was produced by gabbro, which includes large quantity of feldspar (An>90). The simulant’s chemical composition, mineralogy, particle-size distribution, density, angle of internal friction, and cohesion have been analyzed and results demonstrated that most characteristics of NAO-1 are similar with lunar highland soil samples. NAO-1 will benefit the scientific and engineering research of lunar soil.  相似文献

Factors for correcting liquefaction resistance for aged sands using ratios of measured to estimated shear-wave velocity (MEVR) are derived in this paper. Estimated values of shear-wave velocity (VS) are computed for 91 penetration resistance-VS data pairs using previously published relationships. Linear regression is performed on values of MEVR and corresponding average age. Age of the sand layer is taken as the time between VS measurements and initial deposition or last critical disturbance. It is found that MEVR increases by a factor of about 0.08 per log cycle of time, and time equals about 6?years on average when MEVR equals 1 for the recommended penetration resistance-VS relationships. The resulting regression equation is combined with the strength gain equation reported by Hayati et al. 2008 in “Proc., Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics IV,” to produce a MEVR versus deposit resistance correction relationship. This new corrective relationship is applied to create liquefaction resistance curves based on VS, standard penetration test blow count, and cone tip resistance for sands of various ages (or MEVRs). Because age of natural soil deposits is usually difficult to accurately determine, MEVR appears to be a promising alternative.  相似文献

Cluster analysis is a statistical method for grouping similar mathematical data sets and is used herein for delineating geostratigraphy from piezocone penetration test data. In terms of site characterization, clustering is an improvement over other statistical methods because no preliminary estimation of the inherent groups within the analyzed data is needed, and no overlapping is permitted between identified clusters. Clustering can accommodate single or multivariables and no data filtering is required. Its application to defining stratigraphic interfaces is illustrated using five case studies with layered profiles. Clustering is able to detect major changes within the stratigraphy not apparent by visually examining the trends of piezocone data or by available cone soil classification methods.  相似文献

This paper presents new correlations for assessment of the likelihood of initiation (or “triggering”) of soil liquefaction. These new correlations eliminate several sources of bias intrinsic to previous, similar correlations, and provide greatly reduced overall uncertainty and variance. Key elements in the development of these new correlations are (1) accumulation of a significantly expanded database of field performance case histories; (2) use of improved knowledge and understanding of factors affecting interpretation of standard penetration test data; (3) incorporation of improved understanding of factors affecting site-specific earthquake ground motions (including directivity effects, site-specific response, etc.); (4) use of improved methods for assessment of in situ cyclic shear stress ratio; (5) screening of field data case histories on a quality/uncertainty basis; and (6) use of high-order probabilistic tools (Bayesian updating). The resulting relationships not only provide greatly reduced uncertainty, they also help to resolve a number of corollary issues that have long been difficult and controversial including: (1) magnitude-correlated duration weighting factors, (2) adjustments for fines content, and (3) corrections for overburden stress.  相似文献

The establishment of a permanent human presence on other planets will require establishing permanent infrastructure in new environments. Civil engineers select, define, and implement solutions to infrastructure design problems in unique environmental contexts. Wind and seismic loading are two examples of constraints long familiar to terrestrial civil engineering. Designing structures for lunar exploration, development and eventual settlement will make use of the same design processes already practiced by the civil engineering profession. However, the extensive experience base resulting from centuries of terrestrial work does not adequately prepare civil engineers for the unprecedented constraints and environmental conditions that are encountered in space. The limited knowledge we already have about the Moon (mostly from the Apollo program) is a place to start. By assimilating and working with this knowledge, those pursuing the design of lunar base structures can begin to produce realistic and valid design solutions. The paper presents technical, operations, and programmatic issues that the writers consider fundamental to understanding the facts of life in this promising new design arena.  相似文献

A modular inflatable structure consisting of thin, composite membranes is presented for use in a lunar base. Results from a linear elastic analysis of the structure indicate that it is feasible in the lunar environment. Further analysis requires solving nonlinear equations and accurately specifying the geometries of the structural members. A computerized geometric modeling technique, using bicubic Bezier surfaces to generate the geometries of the inflatable structure, was conducted. Simulated results are used to create three‐dimensional wire frames and solid renderings of the individual components of the inflatable structure. The component geometries are connected into modules, which are then assembled based upon the desired architecture of the structure.  相似文献

A procedure for estimating the undrained stress-strain behavior of sand from drained self-boring pressuremeter and seismic piezocone penetration tests is proposed in this paper. The procedure offers an inexpensive alternative to laboratory testing and avoids the uncertainty of the empirical methods based on index measurements such as the Standard Penetration Test blow count and the tip resistance in a Piezocone Penetration Test (CPTU). To check its validity, the proposed procedure was used to infer the undrained triaxial stress-strain curves and the results were compared with laboratory triaxial tests on undisturbed samples. The undrained limit equilibrium stability of a dike was also assessed using the inferred stress-strain behavior to illustrate the usefulness of the procedure. The result of the stability analysis was found to be in qualitative agreement with the observed performance of the dike during a recent field experiment attempting to trigger static liquefaction.  相似文献

A cavity expansion-based theory for calculation of cone penetration resistance qc in sand is presented. The theory includes a completely new analysis to obtain cone resistance from cavity limit pressure. In order to more clearly link the proposed theory with the classical cavity expansion theories, which were based on linear elastic, perfectly plastic soil response, linear equivalent values of Young's modulus, Poisson’s ratio and friction and dilatancy angles are given in charts as a function of relative density, stress state, and critical-state friction angle. These linear-equivalent values may be used in the classical theories to obtain very good estimates of cavity pressure. A much simpler way to estimate qc—based on direct reading from charts in terms of relative density, stress state, and critical-state friction angle—is also proposed. Finally, a single equation obtained by regression of qc on relative density and stress state for a range of values of critical-state friction angle is also proposed. Examples illustrate the different ways of calculating cone resistance and interpreting cone penetration test results.  相似文献

Results from dynamic penetration tests are traditionally interpreted on the basis of empirical correlations, this being a frequent criticism to these tests. An alternative rational method of interpretation is proposed in this paper from which the energy delivered to the composition of rods is used to calculate a dynamic force that represents the reaction of the soil to the penetration of the sampler (Fd). Interpretation of soil properties both in sand and clay is based on this calculated dynamic force from which the internal friction angle and the undrained shear strength can be estimated. This is achieved from a simple combination of limit equilibrium analysis and cavity expansion theory. Case studies gathered from the Brazilian experience are reported in this paper to illustrate the applicability of the proposed approach.  相似文献

During the 1999 Chi-Chi Earthquake (Mw = 7.6), significant incidents of ground failure occurred in Wufeng, Taiwan, which experienced peak accelerations ~ 0.7?g. This paper describes the results of field investigations and analyses of a small region within Wufeng along an E–W trending line 350?m long. The east end of the line has single-story structures for which there was no evidence of ground failure. The west end of the line had three to six-story reinforced concrete structures that underwent differential settlement and foundation bearing failures. No ground failure was observed in the free field. Surficial soils consist of low-plasticity silty clays that extend to 8–12?m depth in the damaged area (west side), and 3–10?m depth in the undamaged area (east side). A significant fraction of the foundation soils at the site are liquefaction susceptible based on several recently proposed criteria, but the site performance cannot be explained by analysis in existing liquefaction frameworks. Accordingly, an alternative approach is used that accounts for the clayey nature of the foundation soils. Field and laboratory tests are used to evaluate the monotonic and cyclic shear resistance of the soil, which is compared to the cyclic demand placed on the soil by ground response and soil–structure interaction. Results of the analysis indicate a potential for cyclic softening and associated strength loss in foundation soils below the six-story buildings, which contributes to bearing capacity failures at the edges of the foundation. Similar analyses indicate high factors of safety in foundation soils below one-story buildings as well in the free field, which is consistent with the observed field performance.  相似文献

Over the past decade there has been increasing use of “paste” for backfilling of mined-out voids (“stopes”) in underground mines. Paste backfill is generated from full stream tailings and is almost always placed underground with cement. This paper presents field measurements and back analysis of two different cemented paste backfill (CPB) cases. Using the collected data and subsequent back analysis, the writers show that these two cases demonstrate considerably different consolidation behaviors, which in turn influence critical design and management aspects such as applied barricade stresses and choice of an appropriate curing technique for laboratory control specimens. The paper presents pore pressure and total stress monitoring data gathered from two different CPBs during the deposition process. Both filling cases are modeled using Minefill-2D, which is a finite-element (FE) model capable of fully coupling the time-dependent processes of fill accretion, consolidation, cement hydration, and stress arching. Input parameters for the model are obtained from independent laboratory tests. Comparison between measured values and those calculated based on laboratory measurements verifies that, in general, the model provides a good representation of the process. However, there are some significant difficulties relating to modeling a three-dimensional stope with a two-dimensional plane-strain FE program, and some ways of accounting for these difficulties are explored. The model is then used to extrapolate the measured results to investigate the influence of varying filling rate, cement content, and number of drawpoints on critical design aspects.  相似文献

The writers backanalyzed 39 well-documented liquefaction-induced lateral spreads in terms of a mobilized strength ratio, su(mob)/σvo′ using the Newmark sliding block method. Based on the inverse analyses results, we found that the backcalculated strength ratios mobilized during lateral spreads can be directly correlated to normalized cone penetration test tip resistance and standard penetration test blow count. Remarkably, Newmark analysis-based strength ratios mobilized during these lateral spreads essentially coincide with liquefied strength ratios backcalculated from liquefaction flow failures. The mobilized strength ratios appear to be independent of the magnitude of lateral displacement (at least for displacements greater than 15?cm) and the strength of shaking (in terms of peak ground acceleration). Furthermore, the mobilized strength ratios backcalculated from these cases appear to be consistent for a given depositional environment and do not appear to be severely impacted by potential water layer formation.  相似文献

This paper addresses the interpretation of plate load tests bearing on double-layered systems formed by an artificially cemented compacted top soil layer (three different top layers have been studied) overlaying a compressible residual soil stratum. Applied pressure-settlement behavior is observed for tests carried out using circular steel plates ranging from 0.30 to 0.60 m diameter on top of 0.15 to 0.60-m-thick artificially cemented layers. The paper also stresses the need to express test results in terms of normalized pressure and settlement—i.e., as pressure normalized by pressure at 3% settlement (p/p3%) versus settlement-to-diameter (δ/D) ratio. In the range of H/D (where H = thickness of the treated layer and D = diameter of the foundation) studied, up to 2.0, the final failure modes observed in the field tests always involved punching through the top layer. In addition, the progressive failure processes in the compacted top layer always initiated by tensile fissures in the bottom of the layer. However, depending on the H/D ratio, the tensile cracking started in different positions. The footing bearing capacity analytical solution for layered cohesive-frictional soils appears to be quite adequate up to a H/D value of about 1.0. Finally, for a given project, combining Vésic’s solution with results from one plate-loading test, it is possible (knowing of the demonstrated normalization of p/p3%-δ/D, where the pressure-relative settlement curves for different H/D ratios produce a single curve for all values of H/D) to estimate the pressure-settlement curves for footings of different sizes on different thicknesses of a cemented upper layer.  相似文献

Subsurface Characterization at Ground Failure Sites in Adapazari, Turkey   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Ground failure in Adapazari, Turkey during the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake was severe. Hundreds of structures settled, slid, tilted, and collapsed due in part to liquefaction and ground softening. Ground failure was more severe adjacent to and under buildings. The soils that led to severe building damage were generally low plasticity silts. In this paper, the results of a comprehensive investigation of the soils of Adapazari, which included cone penetration test (CPT) profiles followed by borings with standard penetration tests (SPTs) and soil index tests, are presented. The effects of subsurface conditions on the occurrence of ground failure and its resulting effect on building performance are explored through representative case histories. CPT- and SPT-based liquefaction triggering procedures adequately identified soils that liquefied if the clay-size criterion of the Chinese criteria was disregarded. The CPT was able to identify thin seams of loose liquefiable silt, and the SPT (with retrieved samples) allowed for reliable evaluation of the liquefaction susceptibility of fine-grained soils. A well-documented database of in situ and index testing is now available for incorporating in future CPT- and SPT-based liquefaction triggering correlations.  相似文献

Foundation impedance ordinates are identified from forced vibration tests conducted on a large-scale model test structure in Garner Valley, California. The structure is a steel moment frame with removable cross-bracing, a reinforced concrete roof, and a nonembedded square slab resting on Holocene silty sands. Low-amplitude vibration is applied across the frequency range of 5–15?Hz with a uniaxial shaker mounted on the roof slab. We describe procedures for calculating frequency-dependent foundation stiffness and damping for horizontal translational and rotational vibration modes. We apply the procedures to test data obtained with the structure in its braced and unbraced configurations. Experimental stiffness ordinates exhibit negligible frequency dependence in translation but significant reductions with frequency in rotation. Damping increases strongly with frequency, is stronger in translation than in rocking, and demonstrates contributions from both radiation and hysteretic sources. The impedance ordinates are generally consistent with numerical models for a surface foundation on a half-space, providing that soil moduli are modestly increased from free-field values to account for structural weight, and hysteretic soil damping is considered.  相似文献
