Presents an obituary for Virginia Staudt Sexton. Sexton was born on August 30, 1916, in New York City, where she spent her life and career. She graduated cum laude from Hunter College with a major in classics and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She first taught elementary school and then completed a PhD in experimental psychology at Fordham University. Her first academic appointment was at Notre Dame College of Staten Island. In 1953 she moved, as Instructor, to Hunter College in the Bronx (later renamed Herbert H. Lehman College), from which she retired in 1979 as Professor Emerita. She immediately resumed her career, however, as Distinguished Professor of Psychology at St. John's University in Jamaica, New York, a position from which she retired in 1990. Sexton was a Fellow of eight divisions of the American Psychological Association (APA) and a member of six more. She began to list history as her major field of interest in APA directories as early as 1957, and it retained its importance in her entries from then on. Sexton died in 1997. The list of "Accredited Doctoral Programs in Professional Psychology: 2003" (American Psychologist, 2003, Vol. 58, No. 12, pp. 1067-1080) contained an error. On page 1074, the University of Southern California is incorrectly identified (Footnote 7) as no longer admitting students to its doctoral program in clinical psychology. This is not the case. However, the University of Southern California is no longer admitting students to its doctoral program in counseling psychology (listed on page 1078), and the program is being phased out. (The following abstract of this article originally appeared in record 2008-06168-001.) This is the official listing of accredited doctoral programs. It reflects all committee decisions through June 29, 2003. This list also is provided by electronic means (http://www.apa.org/ed/accreditation/doctoral.html), but that listing is for informational purposes only and should not be used for official credential review. The APA Committee on Accreditation has accredited the doctoral training programs in the traditional substantive areas of clinical, counseling, school, or combined professional-scientific psychology representing two or more of those areas listed alphabetically below by their host institutions.. Presents an obituary for Sidney Orgel (1926-2003). Bud, as everyone knew him, received his bachelor's degree from New York University in 1948. He completed his master's (1950) and doctoral (1956) degrees in clinical psychology at the University of Connecticut. Bud joined the staff of the Syracuse Veterans Administration Hospital in 1956 and then in 1968 moved to the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center to develop a Division of Clinical Psychology. He remained at Upstate for the rest of his career and in 1993 was appointed professor emeritus. The high esteem in which he was held at Upstate is reflected in his selection as acting chair of the Department of Psychiatry, a position he held from 1981 to 1985 and a rare position for a psychologist. It was at Upstate that Bud's unique talents flourished. His first accomplishment was the development of one of the country's outstanding clinical psychology internships. The training and education of psychologists became a passion for him. Interns adored him, not only because he was an outstanding supervisor, but also because his trainees knew that his goal was providing them with the best possible experience and training. Comments on the monograph Education for Psychotherapy (1962), by Gertrude Blanck. The current authors suggests that while the pamphlet was a worthy effort to provide information about appropriate facilities for those seeking training in psychotherapy, including doctoral programs in clinical psychology, there are mistakes and distortions, particularly in the information for the Teachers College, Columbia University program. Because of this, it is suggested that all the programs described must, to varying extents, be misrepresented, and that anyone turning to it for help is very likely to be misled. Each fall the APA Education and Training Board sends to every graduate department with an approved program in clinical or in counseling psychology a detailed questionnaire. This questionnaire asks for information about the number of faculty members in the graduate training program, the number of full-time and part-time graduate students, the number of persons admitted to candidacy for the PhD, the number of PhDs granted the preceding year, and the number of graduate students admitted. This article presents a summary of the data obtained via these questionnaires. The authors suggest that for more precise information, a more complete questionnaire with carefully defined categories of training areas or subject matter would need to be answered by graduate departments, including both those with approved programs and those without them.
