Membrane Behavior of Compacted Clay Liners   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The containment function of clay barriers used for waste containment applications (e.g., landfills) can be enhanced if such clays exhibit membrane behavior or the ability to restrict the migration of solutes (e.g., contaminants). In this regard, compacted specimens of a locally available natural clay known as Nelson Farm Clay (NFC), as well as NFC amended with 5% (dry weight) sodium bentonite, were evaluated for hydraulic conductivity, k, and the potential for membrane behavior. The membrane efficiencies of specimens of both soils compacted such that k was less than 10?7?cm/s were measured by establishing steady salt (KCl) concentration differences, ?ΔCo, ranging from 3.9 to 47 mM across the specimens in a flexible-wall cell under closed-system boundary conditions. The measured membrane efficiency for the unamended NFC was negligible (i.e., ≤ 1.4%), even though the k was suitably low (i.e., k<10?7?cm/s). In contrast, compacted specimens of the bentonite amended NFC exhibited not only lower k but also significant membrane behavior, with membrane efficiencies as high as 97.3% for ?ΔCo of 3.9-mM KCl. The results suggest that natural clays typically suitable for use as compacted clay liners (CCLs) are not likely to behave as semipermeable membranes unless the clay is amended with bentonite or the clay is inherently rich in high swelling clay minerals (e.g., sodium smectite). The potential benefit resulting from membrane behavior in a CCL constructed with the bentonite amended NFC is illustrated analytically in terms of liquid flux.  相似文献

A series of unsaturated soil triaxial tests were performed on four soils including sand, silt, and a low plasticity clay. Attempts were made to correlate unsaturated soil properties from these tests and data from the literature with soil-water characteristics curve (SWCC), soil gradation, and saturated soil properties. The feasibility of estimating unsaturated soil property functions from saturated soil properties, SWCCs and gradation data, is demonstrated. A hyperbolic model for estimation of the unsaturated soil parameter, ?b, versus matric suction is presented. Shear induced volume change behavior was also studied, and results are included in this paper. Although not correlated with soil index properties, these shear-induced volume change data are important to complete stress-deformation analyses, and represent a significant addition to the existing data base of unsaturated soil properties.  相似文献

The unique properties of lunar regolith make for the extreme coupling of the soil to microwave radiation. Space weathering of lunar regolith has produced myriads of nanophase-sized Fe0 grains set within silicate glass, especially on the surfaces of grains, but also within the abundant agglutinitic glass of the soil. It is possible to melt lunar soil (i.e., 1,200–1,500°C) in minutes in a normal kitchen-type 2.45?GHz microwave, almost as fast as your tea-water is heated. No lunar simulants exist to study these microwave effects; in fact, previous studies of the effects of microwave radiation on lunar simulants, MLS-1 and JSC-1, have been misleading. Using real Apollo 17 soil has demonstrated the uniqueness of the interaction of microwave radiation with the soil. The applications that can be made of the microwave treatment of lunar soil for in situ resource utilization on the Moon are unlimited.  相似文献

Key Parameters for Strength Control of Artificially Cemented Soils   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Often, the use of traditional techniques in geotechnical engineering faces obstacles of economical and environmental nature. The addition of cement becomes an attractive technique when the project requires improvement of the local soil. The treatment of soils with cement finds application, for instance, in the construction of pavement base layers, in slope protection of earth dams, and as a support layer for shallow foundations. However, there are no dosage methodologies based on rational criteria as exist in the case of the concrete technology, where the water/cement ratio plays a fundamental role in the assessment of the target strength. This study therefore aims to quantify the influence of the amount of cement, the porosity and the moisture content on the strength of a sandy soil artificially cemented, as well as to evaluate the use of a water/cement ratio and a voids/cement ratio to assess its unconfined compression strength. A number of unconfined compression tests, triaxial compression tests, and measurements of matric suction were carried out. The results show that the unconfined compression strength increased linearly with the increase in the cement content and exponentially with the reduction in porosity of the compacted mixture. The change in moisture content also has a marked effect on the unconfined compression strength of mixtures compacted at the same dry density. It was shown that, for the soil-cement mixture in an unsaturated state (which is usual for compacted fills), the water/cement ratio is not a good parameter for the assessment of unconfined compression strength. In contrast, the voids/cement ratio, defined as the ratio between the porosity of the compacted mixture and the volumetric cement content, is demonstrated to be the most appropriate parameter to assess the unconfined compression strength of the soil-cement mixture studied.  相似文献

A closed-loop time-optimal control strategy for the highly nonlinear problem of the lunar landing mission by using the perturbation technique is developed in this study. The first part of the study considers analytical solution for an optimal control policy of variable mass spacecraft, while it descents on the surface of the moon in the variable gravitational field of it. To validate the accuracy of perturbation solution, a numerical approach based on steepest descent method is employed. The second part considers analytical derivation of an optimal feedback guidance solution by employing the neighboring optimal control (NOC) law when effects of imperfection in the dynamic model or disturbing noises have been taken into account. The technique of NOC produces time-varying feedback gains that minimize the performance index to the second order for perturbations from a nominal optimal path. The robustness of the designed NOC law is examined with applying sinusoidal noises. From the study of the simulation results, it may be concluded that the developed optimal guidance laws may be used in real world spacecraft applications.  相似文献

The establishment of a permanent human presence on other planets will require establishing permanent infrastructure in new environments. Civil engineers select, define, and implement solutions to infrastructure design problems in unique environmental contexts. Wind and seismic loading are two examples of constraints long familiar to terrestrial civil engineering. Designing structures for lunar exploration, development and eventual settlement will make use of the same design processes already practiced by the civil engineering profession. However, the extensive experience base resulting from centuries of terrestrial work does not adequately prepare civil engineers for the unprecedented constraints and environmental conditions that are encountered in space. The limited knowledge we already have about the Moon (mostly from the Apollo program) is a place to start. By assimilating and working with this knowledge, those pursuing the design of lunar base structures can begin to produce realistic and valid design solutions. The paper presents technical, operations, and programmatic issues that the writers consider fundamental to understanding the facts of life in this promising new design arena.  相似文献

Future lunar explorations require a thorough understanding of the geotechnical properties of lunar soils. However, the small amount of lunar soil that was brought back to earth cannot satisfy the needs. A new lunar soil simulant, NU-LHT-2M, has been developed to simulate lunar regolith in the lunar highlands region. It is characterized to help the development of regolith-moving machines and vehicles that will be used in future missions to the moon. The simulant’s particle size distribution, specific gravity, maximum and minimum densities, compaction characteristics, shear strength parameters and compressibility have been studied; and the results are compared with the information about lunar regolith provided in the Lunar Sourcebook.  相似文献

A variety of products made from lunar resources will be required for a lunar outpost. These products might be made by adapting existing processing techniques to the lunar environment, or by developing new techniques unique to the moon. In either case, processing techniques used on the moon will have to have a firm basis in basic principles of materials science and engineering, which can be used to understand the relationships between composition, processing, and properties of lunar‐derived materials. These principles can also be used to optimize the properties of a product, once a more detailed knowledge of the lunar regolith is obtained. Using three types of ceramics (monolithic glasses, glass fibers, and glass‐ceramics) produced from lunar simulants, we show that the application of materials science and engineering principles is useful in understanding and optimizing the mechanical properties of ceramics on the moon. We also demonstrate that changes in composition and/or processing can have a significant effect on the strength of these materials.  相似文献

Soil compaction quality control plays an important role in earthwork construction. Compacted dry density is only loosely related to the actual deformation of the compacted soil. Rather than using dry density as the controlling factor for compacted fills, it would be better to measure properties more closely related to soil compressibility. The Briaud compaction device (BCD) is a simple, small-strain, nondestructive testing apparatus that can be used to evaluate the modulus of compacted soils. The use of the BCD as a field testing device for compacted soil quality control may be more beneficial than the current practice of measuring in situ dry density. In this study, the laboratory procedures of the BCD were evaluated for compacted silt. The modulus determined by the BCD was compared to the dynamic elastic moduli (Young’s and shear moduli) determined from ultrasonic pulse velocity testing on the same compacted silt samples. The BCD modulus correlated well with the ultrasonic pulse velocity results with R2 value of 0.8 or better. Finally, a repeatability and reproducibility study conducted on the BCD showed a variation of 4% from the mean when only the soil properties were altered.  相似文献

Laboratory tests were conducted on three lateritic soil samples to illustrate some pertinent considerations in the design of compacted lateritic soil liners and covers. The three design parameters investigated are hydraulic conductivity, desiccation-induced volumetric shrinkage, and unconfined compressive strength. Test specimens were compacted at various molding water contents using four compactive efforts. The compaction conditions were shown to have some relationship with soil compaction using either the plasticity modulus or the plasticity product (i.e., clay index). For construction quality assurance purposes, the traditional approach was compared with the modern criterion. Deficiencies associated with the traditional approach for soil liners found in literature also apply to lateritic soils. Overall acceptable zones were constructed on the compaction plane to meet design objectives for hydraulic conductivity, volumetric shrinkage strains, and unconfined compressive strength. The line of optimums was identified as a suitable lower bound for overall acceptable zones of lateritic soils. The volumetric shrinkage strain was also identified as the second most important design parameter for lateritic soils. The shapes of the acceptable zones were affected by the fines contents of the soils.  相似文献

The Moon is nearly devoid of essential biogenic resources such as water, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen. Lunar bases must have a ready supply of these vital resources since they are easily lost to the vacuum of space. Also, wet chemical processes dominate the chemical industries. Extraterrestrial sources of these materials must be found to provide for life support, construction, and manufacturing. If Phobos and Deimos have carbonaceous chondritic compositions, they are ideal targets for extraterrestrial exploitation. They may contain biogenic resources such as water, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen, as well as easily recoverable structural materials.  相似文献

Various aspects of the mechanical behavior of kaolin clay are discussed in light of experimental observations from a series of strain controlled true triaxial undrained tests performed on cubical kaolin clay specimens with flocculated and dispersed microfabric, using a fully automated flexible boundary experimental setup with real-time feedback control system. The laboratory procedures used to prepare flocculated and dispersed microfabric specimens are presented. Mercury intrusion porosimetry is used to evaluate the pore structure of these specimens. The influence of microfabric on the consolidation behavior of kaolin clay is evaluated based on the data obtained from K0 consolidation during constant rate of strain tests and the isotropic consolidation during true triaxial tests. Undrained tests on kaolin clay show that the following vary with microfabric of specimen: The shear stiffness, excess pore pressure generated during shear, and strength and strain to failure. For both microfabrics, the observed strength behavior using cubical triaxial testing shows a similar pattern of variation with applied stress anisotropy; hence, only a marginal influence of fabric-induced anisotropy.  相似文献

The deformation characteristics of artificially cemented calcareous soil subjected to undrained cyclic triaxial loading are investigated at different confining pressure and cyclic stress levels. The influence of cementation on the shear stiffness is investigated by comparing the behavior of cemented and uncemented soils with similar initial conditions. It is observed that the deviator stress and the deviatoric strain at yield reduced with increasing number of cycles for cemented sand due to progressive degradation of bond, which results in significant decrease in stiffness. On the other hand, a strain-hardening effect is observed in uncemented sand and this results in increasing yield stress and strain with progressive number of cycles. A linear relationship between degradation index and number of cycles is observed for cemented sand. This relationship has been synthesized in the form of an empirical equation by modifying a previously proposed equation for cohesive soils. This empirical equation was further used to evaluate the fatigue life of soils by adopting a failure criterion.  相似文献

The construction of an outpost on the Moon in which humans can live and work for periods exceeding six months will require special countermeasures to adapt to the hostile environment present at the lunar surface. Various inherent dangers such as meteoroids, galactic cosmic radiation, solar proton events, and large thermal extremes will drive the design configuration of the outpost. Other considerations such as lunar soil mechanics, equipment performance, mass delivery, risk, reliability, and tele‐operability act strongly as constraints that shape and control the design alternatives. Analysis of these fundamental relationships have resulted in lunar civil engineering guidelines, which are unique to this domain, and these in turn have pointed to research areas needing further attention. A preliminary design is presented for a lunar outpost shelter. Additionally, the design methodology is explored, and early enabling technologies are identified to facilitate an understanding of lunar shelter designs from an integrated system standpoint.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation whose purpose was to evaluate the effects of compaction on the erodibility of cohesionless soils. By means of a recently developed flume experiment, sediment erosion rates and incipient motion, as a function of shear stress, average velocity, and dry density, have been determined for three compacted sand and gravel mixtures. A preliminary comparison of the incipient motion values shows that granular soils compacted at the Proctor optimum have a higher resistance to free surface flow erosion than those compacted at lower and higher densities. This leads one to infer that the Proctor optimum, generally used as a standard for construction, might also be an optimum for hydraulic resistance and stability. Additional comparison of the experimental data with two commonly used incipient motion criteria also suggests that Yang’s criterion is a better predictor of soil detachment than the Shields-Yalin criterion.  相似文献

The results of drained triaxial tests on fiber reinforced and nonreinforced sand (Osorio sand) specimens are presented in this work, considering effective stresses varying from 20 to 680?kPa and a variety of stress paths. The tests on nonreinforced samples yielded effective strength envelopes that were approximately linear and defined by a friction angle of 32.5° for the Osorio sand, with a cohesion intercept of zero. The failure envelope for sand when reinforced with fibers was distinctly nonlinear, with a well-defined kink point, so that it could be approximated by a bilinear envelope. The failure envelope of the fiber-reinforced sand was found to be independent of the stress path followed by the triaxial tests. The strength parameters for the lower-pressure part of the failure envelope, where failure is governed by both fiber stretching and slippage, were, respectively, a cohesion intercept of about 15?kPa and friction angle of 48.6?deg. The higher-pressure part of the failure envelope, governed by tensile yielding or stretching of the fibers, had a cohesion intercept of 124?kPa, and friction angle of 34.6?deg. No fiber breakage was measured and only fiber extension was observed. It is, therefore, believed that the fibers did not break because they are highly extensible, with a fiber strain at failure of 80%, and the necessary strain to cause fiber breakage was not reached under triaxial conditions at these stress and strain levels.  相似文献

Soil plays an important role in the construction of foundations of roads and buildings. The utilization of soil traditionally involves the compaction of the in‐situ or previously loosened material to achieve a desired strength. The paper reports an initial investigation on the effect of the percentage of fines on the densification and strength of lunar‐soil simulant. The results of vibratory and static compaction tests in the laboratory suggest that the amount of fines should be reduced from the existing 50% that is typical for lunar regolith. The measurement of density and cone resistance of soil mix with only 10% showed large differences when compared to soils with 30% or 50% fines. No attempt has been made to find optimal soil mixes for compaction.  相似文献

This paper presents a methodology to investigate the collapse behavior of unsaturated soils using suction-monitored oedometer tests. By incorporating independent suction measurement, the oedometer apparatus is capable of following the same stress paths as in double oedometer tests, while continuously monitoring the suction. The proposed method has been used to investigate the collapse behavior of a compacted silty clay and to confirm the uniqueness of the loading-collapse surface as identified from loading and wetting paths. A new mathematical form of the yield surface within an elastoplastic framework is proposed on the basis of test results over a wide range of suctions (0 to 30,000?kPa) and net stresses (up to 7,000?kPa). The fundamental assumptions of the newer type of elastoplastic framework, which incorporate the degree of saturation within their stress variables, are evaluated, and the limitations of such models are identified. The collapse behavior of samples with different fabrics induced by differing compaction characteristics is also investigated within an elastoplastic framework. The difference in fabric, which is observed through a petrological microscope, can be presented in a quantitative way with different model parameters.  相似文献

Two types of rockfill materials collected from seven sites are modeled and tested under triaxial loading. A constitutive model based on a disturbed state concept is used to characterize the behavior of modeled rockfill materials. The model is shown to provide satisfactory prediction of the observed behavior of the modeled materials. Characteristics of the particles of the rockfill materials are determined. Relationships are developed between the material constants of the modeled rockfill materials and the characteristics of the particles and these are used to predict the material constants for the prototype size rockfill materials.  相似文献
