A modified gas‐translation (GT) model based on a GT mechanism was successfully applied to the pore‐size evaluation and gas transport behavior analysis of microporous membranes with different pore‐size distributions. Based on the gas permeation results of three microporous membranes derived from different alkoxides, the effects of activation energy and the selection of a standard gas on the pore‐size evaluation were discussed in a comparative study. The presence of nano‐sized defects had an important influence on the gas permeation performance of microporous membranes, depending largely on the original pore size of the membrane in question. Moreover, the gas‐separation effect of the pore‐size distribution in a silica membrane was theoretically studied and revealed a significant increase in gas permeance for relatively large gas species but not for small ones. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 61: 2268–2279, 2015  相似文献

Organosilica membranes were fabricated using bridged organoalkoxysilanes (bis(triethoxysilyl)methane (BTESM), bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE), bis(triethoxysilyl)propane (BTESP), bis(trimethoxysilyl)hexane (BTMSH), bis(triethoxysilyl)benzene (BTESB), and bis(triethoxysilyl)octane (BTESO)) to produce highly permeable molecular sieving membranes. The effect of the organoalkoxysilanes on network pore size and microporous structure was evaluated by examining the molecular size and temperature dependence of gas permeance across a wide range of temperatures. Organosilica membranes showed H2/N2 and H2/CH4 permeance ratios that ranged from 10 to 150, corresponding to network pore size, and both H2 selectivity decreased with an increase in the carbon number between 2 Si atoms. Organosilica membranes showed activated diffusion for He and H2, and a slope of temperature dependence that increased approximate to the increase in the carbon number between 2 Si atoms. The relationship between activation energy and He/H2 permeance ratio for SiO2 and organosilica membranes suggested that the molecular sieving can dominate He and H2 permeation properties via the rigid microporous structure, which was constructed by BTESM and BTESE. With increased in the carbon concentration in silica, polymer chain vibration in organic bridges, which is a kind of solution/diffusion mechanism, can dominate the permeation properties. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 4491–4498, 2017  相似文献

The effect of the gas molecular size and its affinity to the pore surface on gas permeation properties through the ceramic membranes was studied by both the gas permeation experiments and gas permeation simulations using a nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) technique. A modified gas permeation model equation based on the gas translation (GT) mechanism was presented. MD simulation revealed that the effective diffusion length in a micropore depended on the gas molecular size, and the pre‐exponential coefficient of a modified GT model equation showed good correlation with the kinetic diameter of the gas molecules. Also presented is a simple method to estimate the mean pore size of microporous membranes. The estimated pore sizes were consistent with observed kinetic diameter dependencies of gas permeance for real silica membranes. The pore size of a Deca‐Dodecasil 3R (DDR) zeolite membrane was also reasonably estimated at ~0.4 nm from the reported gas permeation data. © 2012 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 2179–2194, 2013  相似文献

Organic/inorganic hybrid silica membranes were prepared from 1,1,3,3‐tetraethoxy‐1,3‐dimethyl disiloxane (TEDMDS) by the sol‐gel technique with firing at 300–550°C in N2. TEDMDS‐derived silica membranes showed high H2 permeance (0.3–1.1 × 10?6 mol m?2 s?1 Pa?1) with low H2/N2 (~10) and high H2/SF6 (~1200) perm‐selectivity, confirming successful tuning of micropore sizes larger than TEOS‐derived silica membranes. TEDMDS‐derived silica membranes prepared at 550°C in N2 increased gas permeances as well as pore sizes after air exposure at 450°C. TEDMDS had an advantage in tuning pore size by the “template” and “spacer” techniques, due to the pyrolysis of methyl groups in air and Si? O? Si bonding, respectively. For pore size evaluation of microporous membranes, normalized Knudsen‐based permeance, which was proposed based on the gas translation model and verified with permeance of zeolite membranes, reveals that pore sizes of TEDMDS membranes were successfully tuned in the range of 0.6–1.0 nm. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2011  相似文献

The sol‐gel method was applied in the fabrication of homogenous polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (HOMO‐POSS)‐derived silica membranes. Single gas permeation characteristics in a temperature range of 100–500°C were examined to discuss the effect of silica precursor on amorphous silica networks. HOMO‐POSS‐derived membranes showed a CO2 permeance of 1.1 × 10?7 mol m?2 s?1 Pa?1 with a CO2/CH4 permeance ratio of 131 at 100°C, which is a superior CO2/CH4 separation performance by comparison with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS)‐derived silica membranes. Normalized Knudsen‐based permeance (NKP) was applied for quantitative evaluation of pore size. HOMO‐POSS‐derived membranes had loose amorphous silica structures compared to TEOS‐derived membranes and pore size was successfully tuned by changing the calcination temperatures. The activation energy for a HOMO‐POSS‐derived membrane fired at 550°C with a uniform pore size of ~ 0.42 nm increased linearly with the ratio of the kinetic diameter of the gas molecule to the pore diameter, λ (=dk/dp), and showed a trend similar to that of DDR‐type zeolite membranes. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 58: 1733–1743, 2012  相似文献

A sol–gel method was applied for the preparation of silica membranes with different average pore sizes. Ammonia (NH3) permeation/separation characteristics of the silica membranes were examined in a wide temperature range (50–400°C) by measurement of both single and binary component separation. The order of gas permeance through the silica membranes, which was independent of membrane average pore size, was as follows: He > H2 > NH3 > N2. These results suggest that, for permeation through silica membranes, the molecular size of NH3 is larger than that of H2, despite previous reports that the kinetic diameter of NH3 is smaller than that of H2. At high temperatures, there was no effect of NH3 adsorption on H2 permeation characteristics, and silica membranes were highly stable in NH3 at 400°C (i.e., gas permeance remained unchanged). On the other hand, at 50°C NH3 molecules adsorbed on the silica improved NH3‐permselectivity by blocking permeation of H2 molecules without decreasing NH3 permeance. The maximal NH3/H2 permeance ratio obtained during binary component separation was ~30 with an NH3 permeance of ~10?7 mol m?2 s?1 Pa?1 at an H2 permeation activation energy of ~6 kJ mol?1. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2010  相似文献

Abstract

Carbon membranes for gas separation were prepared from the polymer blend consisting of poly(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene oxide) (PPO) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the thermally stable and labile polymer, respectively. The PPO/PVP derived carbon membranes with lower PVP concentrations than 0.6 wt% showed decreased gas permeances and increased permselectivity due to decrease in the pore properties (pore volume and surface area). Meanwhile, gas permeance increased for the carbon membranes prepared with higher PVP concentrations than 0.6 wt% due to the enhanced diffusional pathways for the gas transport through carbon membranes especially in the domain of the thermally labile polymer. It is considered that the introduction of the thermally labile polymer leads to control the pore structure through the permeation results for the carbon membrane derived from the polymer blend.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of thermal treatment from 180°C to 1150°C on the gas transport properties of porous silica membranes were systematically studied for various gases. The permeance of all gases, except for CO2, has a maximum at 800°C. The CO2 permeance was constant from 180°C to 600°C and then decreased monotonically. Membranes thermally treated at 1150°C did not exhibit any gas permeation because of pore collapse. The gas transport behavior follows a combination of Knudsen diffusion and surface diffusion for all gases tested except for carbon dioxide. The permeation of carbon dioxide is strongly affected by capillary condensation. We propose a new transport model composed of two components; that is, the Knudsen diffusion factor, α, and the surface diffusion factor, β. A transition was observed for α and β at around 800–900°C, which is close to the strain point of the membrane. This transition treatment temperature can be correlated with the changes in gas permeance. The model allows qualitative evaluation of gas transport through porous membranes regardless of their actual microporous structures.  相似文献

Silica and cobalt‐doped silica membranes that showed a high permeance of 1.8 × 10?7 mol m?2 s?1 Pa?1 and a H2/N2 permeance ratio of ~730, with excellent hydrothermal stability under steam pressure of 300 kPa, were successfully prepared. The permeation mechanism of gas molecules, focusing particularly on hydrogen and water vapor, was investigated in the 300–500°C range and is discussed based on the activation energy of permeation and the selectivity of gaseous molecules. The activation energy of H2 permeation correlated well with the permeance ratio of He/H2 for porous silica membranes prepared by sol–gel processing, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and vitreous glasses, indicating that similar amorphous silica network structures were formed. The permeance ratios of H2/H2O were found to range from 5 to 40, that is, hydrogen (kinetic diameter: 0.289 nm) was always more permeable than water (0.265 nm). © 2010 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2011  相似文献

The hydrothermal stability of microporous silica hybrid sol-gel derived membranes is often only tested for either the mesoporous intermediate membrane layer or the microporous separation layer. In this work an investigation is done on the interaction between the intermediate γ-alumina layer and the hybrid (BTESE-derived) silica separation layer during hydrothermal treatment. Although bare γ-alumina is degraded during a hydrothermal treatment, a coating of hydrophobic BTESE on γ-alumina retains its gas separation performance, albeit with a lower mechanical adhesion between the hybrid silica separation layer and the γ-alumina intermediate layer. Applying a monoaluminumphosphate (MAP) coating between the α-alumina support and the γ-alumina layer stabilizes the γ-alumina membrane. A BTESE coating on a MAP modified γ-alumina membrane did not show any signs of delamination after hydrothermal testing. Moreover, a significant increase in the H2/N2 (perm)selectivity, factor 3, was observed for these membranes.  相似文献

Microporous silica membranes for hydrogen separation were prepared on a γ-alumina coated α-alumina tube by sol-gel method. The reactants of sol-gel chemistry were tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and methacryloxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (MOTMS). The silane coupling agent, MOTMS, was added as a template in order to control the pore structure to the silicon alkoxide, TEOS. In particular, the microporous membranes were prepared by changing the molar ratio of MOTMS with respect to other substances, and their pore characteristics were analyzed. Then, the effects of thermal treatment on the micropore structure of the resulting silica membranes were investigated. The pore size of the silica membrane prepared after calcination at 400–700 ‡C was in the range of 0.6–0.7 nm. In addition, permeation rates through the membranes were measured in the range of 100–300 dgC using H2, CO2, N2, CH4, C2H6, C3H6 and SF6. The membrane calcined at 600 ‡C showed a H2 permeance of 2×10-7-7×10-7 molm-2s-1Pa-1 at permeation temperature 300 ‡C, and the separation factors for equimolar gas mixtures were 11 and 36 for a H2/CO2 mixture and 54 and 132 for a H2/CH4 mixture at permeation temperatures of 100 ‡C and 300 ‡C, respectively.  相似文献

Catalytic decomposition of NH3 with H2‐selective microporous silica membranes for COx‐free hydrogen production was studied theoretically and experimentally. The simulation study shows that NH3 conversion, H2 yield and H2 purity increase with the Damköhler number (Da), and their improvement is affected by the effect of H2 extraction as well as NH3 and N2 permeation through the membranes. The experimental study of NH3 decomposition was carried out in a bimodal catalytic membrane reactor (BCMR), consisting of a bimodal catalytic support and a H2‐selective silica layer. Catalytic membranes showed H2 permeances of 6.2–9.8 × 10?7 mol m?2 s?1 Pa?1, with H2/NH3 and H2/N2 permeance ratios of 110–200 and 200–700, respectively, at 773 K. The effect of operating conditions on membrane reactor performance with respect to NH3 conversion, H2 yield and H2 purity was investigated, and the results were in agreement with those calculated by the proposed simulation model. © 2012 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 168–179, 2013  相似文献

Hybrid organosilica membranes were successfully prepared using bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE) and applied to reverse osmosis (RO) desalination. The organosilica membrane calcined at 300°C almost completely rejected salts and neutral solutes with low‐molecular‐weight. Increasing the operating pressure led to an increase in water flux and salt rejection, while the flux and rejection decreased as salt concentration increased. The water permeation mechanism differed from the viscous flow mechanism. Observed activation energies for permeation were larger for membranes with a smaller pore size, and were considerably larger than the activation energy for water viscosity. The organosilica membranes exhibited exceptional hydrothermal stability in temperature cycles up to 90°C. The applicability of the generalized solution‐diffusion (SD) model to RO and pervaporation (PV) desalination processes were examined, and the quantitative differences in water permeance were accurately predicted by the application of generalized transport equations. © 2012 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 1298–1307, 2013  相似文献

Composite layer containing postmodified MIL‐53 (P‐MIL‐53) was exploited to be coated on as‐fabricated asymmetric hollow fiber membrane for improving gas separation performance. The morphology and pore size distribution of P‐MIL‐53 particles were characterized by SEM and N2 adsorption isotherm. The EDX mapping and FTIR spectra were performed to confirm the presence of P‐MIL‐53 deposited on the outer surface of hollow fiber membranes. The results of pure gas permeation measurement indicated that incorporation of P‐MIL‐53 particles in coating layer could improve permeation properties of hollow fiber membranes. By varying coating times and P‐MIL‐53 content, the membrane coated with PDMS/15%P‐MIL‐53 composite by three times achieved best performance. Compared to pure PDMS coated membrane, CO2 permeance was enhanced from 29.96 GPU to 40.24 GPU and ideal selectivity of CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 also increased from 23.28 and 26.95 to 28.08 and 32.03, respectively. The gas transport through composite membrane was governed by solution‐diffusion mechanism and CO2 preferential adsorption of P‐MIL‐53 contributed to considerable increase of CO2 solubility resulting in accelerated permeation rate. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A facile method for the fabrication of amine‐silica membranes with enhanced CO2 separation performance was proposed via the thermally induced liberation of small molecules from quaternary ammonium salt. Quaternary ammonium‐silica (QA‐SiO1.5) xerogel powders/films were fabricated via sol‐gel processing and their thermal stability was systematically studied using thermogravimetric mass spectrometer, Fourier transform infrared, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy analysis. CO2 sorption performances of QA‐SiO1.5 derived xerogel powders were quantitatively compared after assigning their relevant parameters to a dual‐mode sorption model. The gas permeation performances of membranes derived from QA‐SiO1.5 were evaluated in terms of kinetic diameter and temperature dependence of gas permeance, and activation energy (Ep) required for gas permeation. The results indicate that liberation of the CH3Cl molecules from these membranes significantly improved both CO2 permeation and CO2/N2 separation capabilities. Therefore, the present study provides insight that should be useful in the development of high‐performance CO2 separation membranes via the effect of the thermally induced liberation of small molecules. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 64: 1528–1539, 2018  相似文献

The dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane (MCH) to toluene (TOL) for hydrogen production was theoretically and experimentally investigated in a bimodal catalytic membrane reactor (CMR), that combined Pt/Al2O3 catalysts with a hydrogen‐selective organosilica membrane prepared via sol‐gel processing using bis(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTESE). Effects of operating conditions on the membrane reactor performance were systematically investigated, and the experimental results were in good agreement with those calculated by a simulation model with a fitted catalyst loading. With H2 extraction from the reaction stream to the permeate stream, MCH conversion at 250°C was significantly increased beyond the equilibrium conversion of 0.44–0.86. Because of the high H2 selectivity and permeance of BTESE‐derived membranes, a H2 flow with purity higher than 99.8% was obtained in the permeate stream, and the H2 recovery ratio reached 0.99 in a pressurized reactor. A system that combined the CMR with a fixed‐bed prereactor was proposed for MCH dehydrogenation. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 61: 1628–1638, 2015  相似文献

The gas solubility in 1‐dodecyl‐3‐methylimidazolium [C12MIM] based ionic liquids (ILs) was measured at temperatures (333.2, 353.2, and 373.2) K and pressures up to 60 bar for the first time. The popular UNIFAC‐Lei model was successfully extended to long‐chain imidazolium‐based IL and gas (CO2, CO, and H2) systems. The free volume theory was used to explain the gas solubility and selectivity in imidazolium‐based ILs by calculating the fractional free volume and free volume by the COSMO‐RS model. Furthermore, the excess enthalpy of gas‐IL system was concerned to provide new insights into temperature dependency of gas (CO2, CO, and H2) solubility in ILs. The experimental data, calculation, and theoretical analysis presented in this work are important in gas separations with ILs or supported ionic liquid membranes. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 1792–1798, 2017  相似文献

We have studied the CO2/CH4 mixed gas permeation through hollow fiber membranes in a permeator. An approach to characterize the true separation performance of hollow fiber membranes for binary gas mixtures was provided based on experiments and simulations. Experiments were carried out to measure the retentate and permeate flow rates and compositions at each outlet. The influences of pressure drop within the hollow fibers, non-ideal gas behavior in the mixture and concentration polarization were taken into consideration in the mathematics model. The calculation results indicate that the net influence of the non-ideal gas behavior, competitive sorption and plasticization yields the calculated CO2 permeance in a mixed gas permeator close to that obtained in pure gas tests. Whereas the CH4 permeance is higher in the mixed gas tests than that in the pure gas tests, as the plasticization caused by CO2 dominates the permeation process. As a result, the CO2/CH4 mixed gas selectivity is smaller than those obtained in pure gas tests at equivalent pressures. The calculated membrane performance shows little changes with stage cut if the effect of concentration polarization is accounted for in the calculation. The integration method developed in this study could provide more accurate characterizations of mixed gas permeance of hollow membranes than other estimation methods, as our model considers the roles of non-ideal gas behavior and concentration polarization properly.  相似文献

A fluorine-SiO2 membrane was prepared using triethoxyfluorosilane (TEFS) as a Si precursor, and its hydrothermal stability was evaluated. The TEFS membrane calcined at 750°C had fewer Si-OH and Si-F groups in its network structure and showed H2 permeance that was greater than 10−6 mol m−2 s−1 Pa−1 with H2/N2 and N2/SF6 permeance ratios of 10 and 210, respectively. This membrane performance was relatively stable under the temperature (< 500°C) used for steam treatment, regardless of the steam partial pressure (30, 90 kPa). On the other hand, when the steam treatment temperature was increased beyond 500°C, gas permeance decreased significantly and the membrane became highly selective for He and H2 over smaller molecules (He/N2: > 600, H2/N2: > 100). The relationship between the activation energy of H2 and the permeance ratios (He/H2, He/H2O, H2/H2O) of a TEFS-derived membrane under steam treatment higher than 600°C resulted in a network pore size that approximated in conventional microporous SiO2 membranes.  相似文献

In this article, three novel polymers based on poly(2,5‐benzimidazole) (ABPBI) were synthesized by introducing propyl, isobutyl or n‐butyl groups to its side chain through an alkyl substitution reaction. FTIR and 13C NMR were applied to confirm the formation of corresponding chemical groups. Their physical properties including crystallinity, thermal stability, mechanical strength, and micro‐morphology were also characterized. Their solubility in common solvents were also tested to see if the modification will bring any improvement. Gas permeation properties of three derivative membranes prepared by a casting and solvent‐evaporation method were tested with pure gases including H2, N2, O2, CH4, and CO2. It has been revealed that gas with a smaller molecular size owned a larger permeability. This means gas permeation in all prepared membranes should be diffusivity selective. Among all three modified ABPBI membranes, isobutyl substitution modified ABPBI (IBABPBI) showed the best selectivity of H2 over other gases such as N2 (~185) and CO2 (~6.3) with a comparable permeability (~9.33 barrer) when tested at 35°C and 3.0 atm. Testing temperature increase facilitated gas permeation for all three membranes obviously; while in term of gas selectivity temperature increase showed diverse alteration because it brought variable impact on gas solubility of different gases. Even so, IBABPBI membrane still owned acceptable selectivity of H2 over N2 (~118) and CO2 (~6.3) with an almost doubled permeability (~17.5 barrer) when tested at 75°C and 3.0 atm. Additional tests showed that running at high pressure did not bring any obvious deterioration to gas separation performance of IBABPBI membrane. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
