The purpose of this investigation was to examine changes in glottal configuration in women under a variety of pitch and loudness conditions after an interval of loud reading. Twelve young adult women with normal laryngeal structures were photographed under stroboscopic light and sustained the vowel/i/for a minimum of 3 s, at three pitch levels and three loudness levels, before and after a 15-min interval of loud reading. Results indicate that female speakers tend to alter glottic configurations across phonatory conditions after loud reading, particularly during high-pitch phonation. Specifically, five subjects tended to increase glottal closure, one tended to increase glottal opening, two tended to maintain the identical configuration, and four demonstrated no consistent pattern of response.  相似文献

This paper is a sequel to a study which showed that the dominant dimension for perceptual discrimination among normal voices was the male-female categorization and which also suggested that discrimination within the male-female categories utilized distinct dimenisons. The present study eliminates the male-female axis by treating the gender groups separately and making the within-category dimensions available for more sensitive analysis. The purpose was to determine the number and nature of perceptual parameters needed to explain judgments of voice similarity depending on talker sex and whether the stimulus sample was a sustained vowel or a short phrase. The similarity judgments were submitted to multidimensional analysis via INDSCAL and the resulting dimenisons were interpreted in terms of available acoustic measures and unidimensional voice-quality ratings of pitch, breathiness, hoarseness, nasality, and effort. The decisions of the listerners appeared to be influenced by both the sex of the speaker and the stimulus sample, although fundamental frequency (fo), was important for all judgments. Aside from the fo dimensions, judgments concerning male voices were related to vocal tract parameters, while similarity judgments of female voices were related to perceived glottal/vocal tranct differences. Formant structure was apparently important in judging the similarity of vowels for both sexes while perceptual glottal/temporal attributes may have been used as cues in the judgments of phrases.  相似文献

Despite many attempts to model how vocal fold movements relate to the aerodynamic forces acting on them during phonation, there have been few simultaneous measurements of glottal area and transglottal air pressures and flows. A novel system is described that combines endoscopic measurement of glottal area with aerodynamic flow and pressure measures made during phonation. Results from bench top model tests and from one human subject are presented. For both tests, an aerodynamic model of airflow through a constriction was used to predict the area of the constriction (glottis), and these predictions were compared with endoscopic measurements. The results showed good correlation between predicted and observed areas; however, for small constrictions (<0.025 cm2), whether artificial or glottal, the errors in estimating areas with either optical or aerodynamic methods increase significantly. These results suggest that this measurement system has the potential to enhance the assessment of vocal function.  相似文献

The effects of prolonged (5 x 45 min) reading in different environmental and ergonomic conditions on time-based glottal waveform parameters of normal female and male subjects (n = 80) were studied. The exposure groups (n = 5 females and males per cell) consisted of eight combinations of the following factors: (1) normal (< 65 dB) or high (> 65 dB) speech output level; (2) sitting or standing posture; (3) low (25 +/- 5%) or high (65 +/- 5%) relative humidity of ambient air. Two rest (morning and noon) and three loading (two in the morning and one in the afternoon) samples were recorded and analyzed. The glottal waveforms were obtained by inverse filtering of the acoustical signal using an automatic method. The following time based parameters were analyzed from the estimate glottal flow waveform: (1) length of fundamental period; (2) open quotient; (3) speed quotient, and (4) closing quotient. The analysis was based on inverse filtering of the first stressed syllable of 'paappa' word repeated 3 x 5 times with normal, maximally soft and maximally loud phonation. Humidity was a significant factor in several instances. The interactions between gender and the loading factors were striking.  相似文献

Phonation threshold pressure (PTP) is the minimum subglottal pressure required to initiate vocal fold oscillation. Although potentially useful clinically, PTP is difficult to estimate noninvasively because of limitations to vocal motor control near the threshold of soft phonation. Previous investigators observed, for example, that trained subjects were unable to produce flat, consistent oral pressure peaks during/pae/syllable strings when they attempted to phonate as softly as possible (Verdolini-Marston, Titze, & Druker, 1990). The present study aimed to determine if nasal airflow or vowel context affected phonation threshold pressure as estimated from oral pressure (Smitheran & Hixon, 1981) in 5 untrained female speakers with normal velopharyngeal and voice function. Nasal airflow during /p/occlusion was observed for 3 of 5 participants when they attempted to phonate near threshold pressure. When the nose was occluded, nasal airflow was reduced or eliminated during /p/;however, individuals then evidenced compensatory changes in glottal adduction and/or respiratory effort that may be expected to alter PTP estimates. Results demonstrate the importance of monitoring nasal flow (or the flow zero point in undivided masks) when obtaining PTP measurements noninvasively. Results also highlight the need to pursue improved methods for noninvasive estimation of PTP.  相似文献

This study examined physiological response to an encounter with and touch by an unfamiliar person. Fifty-five African American (23 male, 30 female) and 51 European American (23 male, 28 female) undergraduates participated. A Black or White interactor entered the room, introduced himself or herself, checked equipment for 30 s, and then took a pulse for 30 s. Entry of the interactor resulted in increased corrugator and zygomaticus facial muscle activity (EMG), increased skin conductance (SC), and heart rate (HR) acceleration. Corrugator EMG was greater among Black subjects; White subjects responded with more zygomatic EMG and SC and greater HR acceleration. Women showed a more positive facial expression than did men. Being touched reduced EMG and HR but resulted in increased SC. White and Black males showed more HR acceleration when encountering a Black male interactor.  相似文献

Vocal tract acoustic resonance was evaluated in a group of 10 untreated adult males with diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome compared to 10 non-OSA adult males. Subjects were required to prolong the vowels /i/, /u/ and /a/, which were subsequently submitted to acoustic analysis of formant frequency and formant bandwidth. Results of the formant frequency analysis indicated lower formant values among the OSA group compared to the non-OSA group, for each vowel type. The lower formant frequencies among the OSA group were attributed to greater vocal tract length compared to non-OSA speakers. The corresponding formant bandwidths for each vowel produced by the OSA group were significantly wider compared to the non-OSA group. The wide formant bandwidths were interpreted to reflect significantly greater vocal tract damping in the OSA subjects, resulting from either excessive vocal tract tissue compliance or general size differences in the length and cross-sectional area of the vocal tract. Discussion focuses on the potential applications of acoustic analysis to aid in the diagnosis and follow-up treatment of OSA.  相似文献

Gender-related interaction patterns on a cooperative problem-solving task were compared in African American and White mixed-gender groups of adolescents, matched on age, socioeconomic status, and school achievement. Hierarchically nested analyses of variance revealed significant interaction effects indicating greater gender equality in the African American groups than in the White groups for a composite measure of all variables, for the measure of level of activity, and for 1 of 2 measures of level of influence, but not for measures of speech form. Post hoc analyses revealed significant gender differences in the White groups for the composite measure, the level of influence measures, 1 speech-form measure, and the level of activity measure ( nearly significant ) and in the African American groups only for 2 speech-form measures. A new method is presented for the parameterization of glottal volume velocity waveforms that have been estimated by inverse filtering acoustic speech pressure signals. The new technique, Parameter for Spectral and Amplitude Features of the Glottal Flow (PSA), combines two features of voice production, the AC value and the spectral decay of the glottal flow, both of which contribute to changes in vocal loudness. PSA yields a single parameter that characterizes the glottal flow in different loudness conditions. By analyzing voices of 8 speakers it was shown that the new parameter correlates strongly with the sound pressure level of speech.  相似文献

Nationally, homicide and suicide are the 2nd and 3rd leading causes of death among children and youth under the age of 21. Sixteen to 19-year-olds now have the highest rate of handgun victimization among all age groups. The firearm suicide rate for White males is over 4 times higher than the rate for African American males, whereas the firearm homicide rate is over 9 times higher for African American males. Almost half of all deaths among African American male teenagers now involve firearms. Multiple steps, both short- and long-term, need to be taken to reduce firearm death rates among children and youth. Some of the possible methods to do so are discussed. This study examined speaking-rate-induced spectral and temporal variability of F2 formant trajectories for target words produced in a carrier phrase at speaking rates ranging from fast to slow. F2 onset frequency measured at the first glottal pulse following the stop consonant release in target words was used to quantify the extent to which adjacent consonantal and vocalic gestures overlapped; F2 target frequency was operationally defined as the first occurrence of a frequency minimum or maximum following F2 onset frequency. Regression analyses indicated 70% of functions relating F2 onset and vowel duration were statistically significant. The strength of the effect was variable, however, and the direction of significant functions often differed from that predicted by a simple model of overlapping, sliding gestures. Results of a partial correlation analysis examining interrelationships among F2 onset, F2 target frequency, and vowel duration across the speaking rate range indicated that covariation of F2 target with vowel duration may obscure the relationship between F2 onset and vowel duration across rate. The results further suggested that a sliding based model of acoustic variability associated with speaking rate change only partially accounts for the present data, and that such a view accounts for some speakers' data better than others.  相似文献

Six studies investigated the extent to which American ethnic groups (African, Asian, and White) are associated with the category "American." Although strong explicit commitments to egalitarian principles were expressed in Study 1, Studies 2-6 consistently revealed that both African and Asian Americans as groups are less associated with the national category "American" than are White Americans. Under some circumstances, a dissociation between mean levels of explicit beliefs and implicit responses emerged such that an ethnic minority was explicitly regarded to be more American than were White Americans, but implicit measures showed the reverse pattern (Studies 3 and 4). In addition, Asian American participants themselves showed the American = White effect, although African Americans did not (Study 5). The American = White association was positively correlated with the strength of national identity in White Americans. Self-report measures of depression, physical health symptoms, and life satisfaction were collected over a 2-yr period from 197 family caregivers of dementia patients and 218 noncaregivers (controls). Latent growth models were used to compare changes across time for African American and White caregivers, with gender, age, and socioeconomic status serving as covariates. Results indicated that White caregivers sustained higher levels of elevated depression and decreasing life satisfaction over time compared with African American caregivers. Both groups of caregivers reported increases in physical symptoms over time. These results indicate worsening difficulties over time for many White caregivers. African American caregivers show more resilience on measures of depression and life satisfaction but are still vulnerable to increases in physical symptoms over time. Dysphonic voices are often analyzed using automated voice analysis software. However, the reliability of acoustic measures obtained from these programs remains unknown, particularly when they are applied to pathological voices. This study compared perturbation measures from CSpeech, Computerized Speech Laboratory, SoundScope, and a hand marking voice analysis system. Sustained vowels from 29 male and 21 female speakers with mild to severe dysphonia were digitized, and fundamental frequency (F0), jitter, shimmer, and harmonics- or signal-to-noise ratios were computed. Commercially available acoustical analysis programs agreed well, but not perfectly, in their measures of F0. Measures of perturbation in the various analysis packages use different algorithms, provide results in different units, and often yield values for voices that violate the assumption of quasi-periodicity. As a result, poor rank order correlations between programs using similar measures of perturbation were noted. Because measures of aperiodicity apparently cannot be reliably applied to voices that are even mildly aperiodic, we question their utility in quantifying vocal quality, especially in pathological voices.  相似文献

This paper reports on indications of the nature of the neurolinguistic connection between phonological and lexical components of language, based on a case of phonemic jargon aphasia. Following bihemispheric embolic infarcts, the subject presented with severe fluent aphasia, characterized by fluent strings of phonemes, with virtually no intelligible utterances. Despite nearly total jargonized output, the fundamental phonological processes of speech were largely intact. Specifically she demonstrated: (1) English phonotactics and English stress-timed rhythmic principles, (2) aspirated stops word-initially and glottalized stops word-finally, (3) utterance final declination of pitch, and (4) stressed syllable vowel lengthening. Additionally, regional-specific (Southern American English) phonological processes, including monophthongization, in-gliding, and front vowel backing, were also preserved. Overall, the investigation reveals an example of an intact phonological rule system operating on a grossly disturbed input (lexical representation).  相似文献

A modified version of the Revised Memory and Behavior Problems Checklist (RMBPC; L. Ten et al, 1992) was administered across 6 different sites to 1,229 family caregivers of community-dwelling adults with dementia. The total sample was divided randomly into 2 subsamples. Principal components analyses on occurrence responses and reaction ratings from the first subsample resulted in a 3-factor solution that closely resembled the originally proposed dimensions (memory-related problems, disruptive behaviors, and depression). Confirmatory factor analyses on data from the second subsample indicated adequate fit for the 3-factor model. Correlations with other caregiver and care-recipient measures supported the convergent and discriminant validity of the RMBPC measures. In addition, female caregivers and White caregivers reported more problems, on average, than male caregivers and African American caregivers, respectively. This study investigated vowel length discrimination in infants from 2 language backgrounds, Japanese and English, in which vowel length is either phonemic or nonphonemic. Experiment 1 revealed that English 18-month-olds discriminate short and long vowels although vowel length is not phonemically contrastive in English. Experiments 2 and 3 revealed that Japanese 18-month-olds also discriminate the pairs but in an asymmetric manner: They detected only the change from long to short vowel, but not the change in the opposite direction, although English infants in Experiment 1 detected the change in both directions. Experiment 4 tested Japanese 10-month-olds and revealed a symmetric pattern of discrimination similar to that of English 18-month-olds. Experiment 5 revealed that native adult Japanese speakers, unlike Japanese 18-month-old infants who are presumably still developing phonological perception, ultimately acquire a symmetrical discrimination pattern for the vowel contrasts. Taken together, our findings suggest that English 18-month-olds and Japanese 10-month-olds perceive vowel length using simple acoustic?phonetic cues, whereas Japanese 18-month-olds perceive it under the influence of the emerging native phonology, which leads to a transient asymmetric pattern in perception. Immediacy was examined in a 17-session case of brief therapy with a bright, articulate, inner-city, African American female client seeing an interpersonally oriented, White, male therapist. The main types of therapist immediacy were reinforcing the client for in-session behavior, inviting the client to collaborate, inquiring about client reactions to therapy, and reminding the client that it was okay to disagree with him. An in-depth qualitative examination of the seven most extensive/salient immediacy events revealed that therapist immediacy enabled the therapist and client to negotiate the relationship, helped the client express her immediate feelings to the therapist, helped the client open up to deeper exploration of concerns, and provided the client with a corrective relational experience. The relations among social information processing (SIP), cardiac activity, and antisocial behavior were investigated in adolescents over a 3-year period (from ages 16 to 18) in a community sample of 585 (48% female, 17% African American) participants. Antisocial behavior was assessed in all 3 years. Cardiac and SIP measures were collected between the first and second behavioral assessments. Cardiac measures assessed resting heart rate (RHR) and heart rate reactivity (HRR) as participants imagined themselves being victimized in hypothetical provocation situations portrayed via video vignettes. The findings were moderated by gender and supported a multiprocess model in which antisocial behavior is a function of trait-like low RHR (for male individuals only) and deviant SIP. In addition, deviant SIP mediated the effects of elevated HRR reactivity and elevated RHR on antisocial behavior (for male and female participants). Mortality rates among White Leghorn-Rhode Island Red pure-line and reciprocal cross adult female progeny were recorded for 8 years. The mortality rate among progeny of White Leghorn males exceeded that of the progeny of Rhode Island Red males in both pure-line and crossbreds. White Leghorn X Rhode Island Red crossbred progeny had the highest mortality rate. In a second phase of the study, a comparison was made between mortality rates of male and female progeny of White Leghorn-Rhode Island Red reciprocal crosses. Rate of loss was significantly lower in males than in females but did not differ between crosses. These results support a conclusion that sex linkage is a major factor in differential mortality rates between progeny of White Longhorn-heavy breed reciprocal crosses.  相似文献
